One thing you could do for the rear motor is to separate the inverter from the actual motor and make an end cap and longer cabling and hoses to run between them. This should make the motor narrower such that it fits between the suspension mounting points. The inverter can then be mounted elsewhere where space is plenty.

I think this is the way to go, then you don't have to shave off any attachment points on the vehicle - just need to find space for the inverter somewhere else.

I believe @richrebuilds did that in one of his videos. @agingwheels swapped the direction of the motor and had to change something with the oil pump

From what I have seen, if you flip the motor (running it in reverse), you might have issues with the internal oil pump. There are a few episodes from @ElectricClassicCars where they had to resolve that. Not sure if that is the same setup you are attempting but something to keep in mind. You are much braver than I am....

Came back to this video to verify my suspicions with your video regarding the switching of leads in the rear motor. It makes perfect sense, and I was sure this was the reason you had opted to do that. It is nice to have a chance to come back to this video and refresh thoughts. I loved that you did your due diligence and realized there is a breathing hole and drain on the rear motor, Jeremy. A simple detail, but important for the longevity of the motor, and so easily overlooked.

Awesome build, and cool problem solving. About those tabs on the rear suspension, I'm betting that by bolting the in-between stuff to it, Porsche stiffened the rear suspension, thus ensured better handling in the corners. I'm not sure it's wise to cut them off without replacing what was basically a cross brace

I went thru the same pain in my build with he front motor, by rotating the front unit now you will have some oiling issues, but it have a simple solution that will required to open the differential cover. Also on the rear motor you can remove the inverter and remote locate it, there is a cover plate that will bolt to where the inverter goes if you decide to go that route. But reversing the motor is not a good idea the internal gears are helical and they are intended to run at full speed where is considered naturally forward, if you change the reverse to be the new forward, eventually you will damage the internal gearing. Of course it can run in reverse but not a t full speed neither for too long. I sent you an email with some pictures.

Suspension are ment to move like gimbal (not much but yes) now the suspensions are unloaded ( I mean car weight is not pushing the suspension) it might fit now after little metal shave but as you gonna put weight like battery and interior it’ll get heavy which may result in brushing other mechanical parts there need to be some sort of clearance for shaft.

If you can keep the weight even close to the original car's and keep the batteries relatively low in the car then I can certainly see this being an excellent sports car when you're done with it. The Cayman has always been a car with a lot of potential. I'm most looking forward to seeing if you're able to reuse the existing Porsche suspension, since that's a large part of why the Cayman is so excellent. If the weight does balloon past the stock weight too far then you may need to purchase some stiffer springs to compensate.

I don't know if it is the case with Tesla motors, but most gears are made to be under high load in one direction. If you put high load in the opposite (reverse) direction than it was manufactured for, you could shred the gears. It happens in 4wds when people get stuck and gun it in reverse.

The front drive units from the S/X are so much less expensive (~1K vs ~2.5K) than the Large Rear Drive Units or even the small rear drive units. Is there a reason you can't use two front drive units ? I seem to remember reading something about front drive units lacking some signal or bit of electronics that made them unusable without being paired with a rear drive unit (large or small), but can't find the reference anymore. The front drive units are narrower and might fit in your rear easier. Even the small rear drive unit is narrower that the large rear drive. Building an AWD Porsche, do you really need the extra power potential and cost of the LDU ?
@Yerevan301
@Yerevan301 10 ай бұрын

It was rear drive. How are you going to connect front drive shafts with hub? New hubs? Some from 4x4 Porsche?
