It would depend on the car and the state you’re trying to register that car in. In my state, car made in 1986 or older can be registered with only a bill of sale. So, in my state, my question would be why would anyone living in my state purchase a car any newer than that with only a bill of sale and expect to be able to register and drive it? Also, you’d be taking a risk buying a high end antique car here that had no title, nor was currently registered to the seller. I wouldn’t do it. Yes, I have bought pre 1986 antique, restorable cars with only a bill of sale, but, in those instances, the cars were so inexpensive that I could easily part them out if something prevented me from registering them … or I could have simply taken a loss on them without becoming devastated from that loss; angry, yes, but not losing that much of an investment. You’d need to know the laws in your state and decide if its worth it to you to try to jump through the possible hoops to register the car there.

Correction you already don't own it because you don't have a title. and after 45 days you can get in trouble for not transferring the vehicle. although this varies State to State.

So true. I am glad you have put forth this information. I bought vechicle with a non branded salvage title from South Dakota state. It had been sold previously by an insurance Co. The titled owner was the insurance co. When I went to Oregon State DMV to transfer the title in my name, Oregon DMV would brand make the title salvage because it was titled in the insurance Co name.

I live in California and my buddy got a car and the previous owner owed back registration and the dmv tried to make him pay it but he looked it up and found a loophole where they can't make u pay the previous owners stuff the dmv will try to and the lady even went and got her manager when he told him the code and they wiped it clean

On top of the title As a title states certificate of ownership" Oregon DMV will tell you not to buy vehicles with a bill of sale/no title.

Purchased a vehicle, private sale, received a bill of sale and a title marked duplicate. The following day at the DMV, couldn't register the vehicle because a second application for a duplicate was submitted to the DMV which voids the one I received. A good scam if the seller could have access to the vehicle purchased.

in Arizona you can't get a title with a bill of sale.....you have to get a bonded title

What if the person selling the car claims they didn't sell it. Making sure the person's name on the title is the person you are buying the car from (by checking the license) doesn't mean they can't claim they didn't sell it to you or maybe the title is faked. Do you take a photo of the seller's driver's license? If you buy a private party, would it help to get your bill of sale notarized?

My question is what if I bought a car at a police auction and was given an abandoned vehicle bill of sale by the police department? Ok I love a couple of your videos on KZfaq of course I have not enough time to go through all of them,anyways so I was doing a couple mechanical issues with a lady and her Mercedes so for about a month I got the issues resolved and fixed she was happy I guess until I notified her on how much her bill was and she would need to pay that so that she could get her car back well she wasn't liking the bill and said"you I'm not gonna b able to afford that"so I guess I'm stuck with a car without the title or getting paid and come to find out the title is under her ex mother in laws name that she hasnt spoken to in about 5yrs+ please help on how to go about if im able to get.title or what to do on getting whats own for.labor and parts put on this car

Hi, what if I have the vehicle and the bill of sale but the previous owner sold the vehicle to the insurance company the insurance company sold it to cop parts and the person who cop parts sold to never transfer the title, so the title is still in the insurance name and or previous owner…What do I do? can I get a transfer if the original owner is assessable?

in Indiana I know better than to buy a car with no title. Nearly impossible to obtain a title if you're not the registered owner and the court would take 6 months at least and then it's not a given because usually no title here means child support lien. Just don't buy a car in Indiana with no title unless you're parting it out or need the engine and the car is cheap. Don't plan on driving it because it's not happening. A salvage doesn't bother me at all. I've repaired quite a few in the last 20 years and IN now has inspection available at some BMVs. I always took the cars to the state police post and yes i drove it there illegally but i live nearby and ive only had 1 trooper comment on the car not being registered but he laughed about it. The same thing always happened. The officer looks at the car, sometimes talks with me or asks if I got it cheap, then they ask the real questions- Do you have receipts or Did you do the repairs yourself? I've never had a police officer look over the receipts very well. I could print them off myself and one car I just fixed, I didn't have receipts for the entire doghouse because I pulled all those parts off another car I bought that was junk. I printed off pictures of the parts car and brought the photos of the VIN etc from the parts car. No problem at all. That process took less than 10 mins 9/10 times. I have had a cop that was slow and talked a lot but he didn't care and getting my salvage to rebuilt paperwork was never in doubt. Normally I take the car in before it's been fully repaired. For instance I took a Camaro in that was black and everything in front of the windshield was the sealer flat black that the parts are when they came out of the shipping box. They don't care if the car is painted and never checked for working airbags etc. Maybe that's just my state police post but I doubt it. I know at the BMV where they offer inspections now, it's the same story. The officer there didn't care, it's mainly a VIN check and visual inspection. The cops are usually real cool about the inspection. They will even come out to your house to do the inspection now, I assume because people like me driving salvage cars to the police post. When they come to my home, they're gone in 5 mins or less and they don't pay attention to the anything unless they like the car. I bought a wrecked Mercedes from one officer and sold a Truck I repaired to a state trooper that did the inspection.

Sticky situation...I purchased a vehicle 2 years ago. I was never able to put it in my name because I only had a bill of sale and not the title. Also, the title was not listed in my state of residence. Recently my car was stollen, but come to find out it's someone I know, and they somehow put it in their name. The dmv won't help me nor the police station. What do I do?

Can't you run the vin before purchase?

Many insurance companies will not insure a reconstructed vehicle which you will not be aware of until it may be too late.
