Is it surprising people are too scared to cycle in London

TFL state they want to encourage people to cycle. They have grand statements on their website about encouraging cycling yet one of the main offenders for close passes on cyclist is buses. The bus was stopping a few metres down the road, the close pass was completely unecessary. Had it just waited it still would have reached the next stop at the same time. 1 metre 50? I shouldn't have felt the need to bang on the side of the flipping bus to alert the driver (not that they paid any attention). In fact I shouldn't have been able to reach out and bang on the bus (if the required gap had been left), let alone felt it necessary. Come on TFL! Quit the virtue signalling and live up to your own aspirations. TFL's own documents show that one of the main vehicle types involved in collisions with cyclists that result in a KSI (Killed or severely injured) are buses. TFL are in charge of the buses. It is clearly within their power to do something about it. Why use tax payer money to prepare a report about cycling deaths and then fail to use your own powers to reduce them? As an aside apologies to the passenger who I suspect almost got as much of a fright as I did. Thankfully unlike me, they were perfectly safe. UPDATE 01/08/23 TFL responded confirming they will discuss the close pass with the driver in question.

This is why you should take prime position when there's not enough room to overtake

At the lights, you either take command of prime position in the road or you let the bus take off from the lights first and follow it. The choice depends on what there is ahead. In the city environment with an upcoming bus stop, I'd favour the first. It's all a matter of thinking ahead, politeness, and self preservation.

When I drove cars and motorcycles I practiced defensive driving. Defensive riding is even more essential for cyclists.

WTF was that? that was near death waiting to happen... Fcuk. If this was me, I would of gone ballistic and ensured report straight to #police & obtained the CCTV from the bus company, which by law they have to give you, either free or a £10 or £15 fee. TFL are taking the piss, 'talk to the driver... 😡

I think as you had the opportunity at the bus stop, I would have had a word, I wouldn't have been angry, I would have just asked "Did you see me, did you know I was there, did you know you squeezed me into the kerb?"

I was tempted. However I do worry in doing so I'm being judgemental. I'm conflicted. Clearly I think it was inappropriate driving and put me at risk. Equally I don't see myself as the arbitor. I'd rather flag it to MPS or TFL and let them decide. If MPS/TFL turn round and say I'm being a snowflake so be it. But it was certainly tempting to "have a word"- which partially lead to me looking at the driver as I went past. Trouble is, in my experience, when they're letting on passengers you're lucky if your presence gets acknowledged let alone a discussion possible. Hence I revert to it being a determination made by someone tasked with making such decisions and, to an extent, best served cold.

At junctions and where it is narrow etc. or would be unsafe for a vehicle to pass you, yes. At traffic lights I would always be in the centre of the lane to prevent vehicles coming alongside me and putting me in their blind spot. It's called primary position and is described and encouraged in the highway code and is taught in Bikeability training. As others have said here, self preservation is more important in these situations. Definitely upload this video to the police website and report it. That bus driver should get points on their licence for that!

I Drive a Bus and i did drive the C11 in 2008, i cycle as well and i was worried for you. The driver is a complete bell end.. I don't do that, you had no room at all. I have had close calls but i always prefer to have the cyclist in front, it's much safer to use the Bus as protection than a weapon.... I get a chance to check the speed also, are they a proper cyclist or a part time one.. proper is 20mph+ part time is 15mph, e-bikes are for lazy people, I'm old skool with a 1985 MTB restored by me with NOS components. I love my bike....

I'm conflicted. I could go but in doing so would rather be adopting a "though shall not pass" approach. Staying nearer the kerb there is space for smaller vehicles (such as mopeds) to safely overtake on the assumption that chungus vehicles like buses won't (on the basis that they can't do so with adequate space). That's my thinking anyway but agree a Bikeability course might be a good thing as you are not the only commenter saying this. Cheers.

@@JustSomeVideos0 This is old school cycling, the type my dad taught me, which basically involves being as little an inconvenience to other road users as physically possible, even if it requires getting yourself killed. There's nothing safe IMO about staying that close to the kerb. Take the lane and also look over your shoulder a lot more, if you know there's a gigantic fuck off bus behind you, then you know to take the lane or at least get out of the gutter a bit to give you some more space if they try and overtake anyway. Anyway, good luck!

Are you sure you don't want to make a few more sweeping statements and stereotypes whilst you're spouting? "You cyclists"? Is this some new scheme where you have to identify a preferred transport method and can solely travel by that method of transport for your entire life such that it becomes an integral part of your identity? Don't tell anyone Matty but sometimes I travel by bicycle, sometimes by foot, sometimes by car, sometimes by train, sometimes by plane, hell sometimes even by boat, horse, camel and hovercraft. Or am I just "transport fluid"? This isn't "cyclists" versus "drivers" or any other reductive BS, it's road users of any type being required to look out for other road users for any type. Anyway, why does it matter if some people travelling in a given way don't follow the rules- doesn't give carte blanche for others to do the same? Is that really the level of idiocy we've reached in the race to the bottom? Or was your comment "blame everyone else" just a recommendation based upon a life of transference and deflection of personal responsibility onto others? I really must add a FAQ to my next video comments for the inevitably inane "get a life", "well if cyclists didn't go through red lights" etc etc yawn yawn.....

Please expand. I believe "do as you would be done by" a good mantra. Indeed that is why, contrary to many recommendations in the comments, I was keeping left so that a moped or motorbike (which could overtake leaving adequate space) could do so. I likely did give the passenger a fright but at that moment I had a bus brushing against me and about to knock me off my bike. I don't personally see in what way I was being discourteous.

Are you sure you're feeling quite right there Andrew? Is there a version of that comment that actually makes sense and is based on the laws of the UK? "It's very hard to dim witted cyclist". Eh? If you "drove buses" I think we can all be very grateful that's in the past tense. Are you seriously trying to suggest that unless you actually make contact with another road user you are driving correctly? Seriously? If so, I hate to break it to you, but you're talking out of your backside. There is obviously no requirement for contact to be made for the majority of driving offences including those relevant when overtaking a cyclist. I very much hope that nowadays the only machine you're in charge of is a computer because that seems challenge enough. Also pray tell, what cycling test would that be? The one that the rabid gammon in the Daily Mail online comments keep on going on about alongside insurance? Had the bus driver just chilled for a second and let me get up to speed rather then squeezing me against the kerb (therein slowing me down) they would have got to the nearby bus stop at precisely the same time if not earlier! Completely unnecessary and dangerous near pass.

I hear you! I think nowadays I'd be riding primary. My way of thinking was this- when I'm driving if a cyclists is in front I'll hang back unless I've got 1m50 for a safe, calm overtake. Doesn't matter whether they're in primary, secondary or tertiary (if there's such a thing). Primary feels such a "thou shall not pass" thing which realistically shouldn't be necessary if the driver behind the cyclist is being considerate. But agree, I tend to now force the issue and own the road and if the driver behind starts sounding their horn I just take it as positive confirmation they're a DH. But it feels a bit unecessary. At those lights there's a right turn (down Iverson Road) which a lot of cars go down and my rationale for keeping left was so a car turning right could come alongside. I wasn't necessarily imagining a chungus bus would side-swipe me... Nowadays I'd be thinking a car turning right is going to be waiting anyway and will only get to turn right long after I've pedalled away... Anyway, cheers Wolfie, appreciate the input.

I understand. It's never easy. Once a bus is passing you, especially on a street that narrow, it's better to slow and let it go by. And when you pass the bus, it's not a bad idea to return the 1.5m compliment - they can pull away from the kerb and things can become tight. Though he should have done a lot better, it must be a strain driving a bus that long and wide on streets that are so narrow. It's cheaper to run buses that are too big than twice as many of a practical size - twice as many and they might be frequent enough to be useful.
