I have an R6 and as much as I love it I still find myself picking up the 7Dii. I shoot sports and it's still a relevant camera today - I very much enjoy the traditional feel, build (R6/R7 doesn't come close), sound and image quality produced by the 7Dii. It's sought of a mini refined 1DX which I also have. Other than the head/eye detect autofocus that is top notch on the R6 I feel the 7Dii is still an awesome camera!

What’s your keeper rate on the 7D2 vs the R6/R7?

90% on the 7d vs 65% on the R6 or R7

More on the R6 but not by much. Subjects with the 7Dii and 300mm 2.8 fill the frame so it does wonderfully under those conditions.

When I first got the R7 I was very disappointed, I think my expectations of it working straight out of the box were too high. After the initial first 2 weeks it was down for listing for sale as my 1DX was producing far more keepers. But I gave it a bit of time and played with the settings and now its pretty much spot on. Does it feel as good as my 1DX or 5DSR ..no. No where near the same build quality, would I trust it in the rain, well it has survived so far although I have been a tad more careful with it. All my EF glass works on it adapted, I have had no issues with the pulsing focus others have mentioned, eye AF works a treat. I bought a reasonably priced used RF100-400 a few weeks ago, I was not so sure about the f8 at 400mm but I took it out on a brighter day and it was such a light combination with fast focus and worked a treat. I agree a grip would have been better for longer heavier lenses.

If there was money to be made, I would get the R7. Since I have to buy all my own stuff, I am sticking to my M6 mark II.

@@joewhitnallphotography The Canon M6 mark II is compact yet has 32.5 megapixels. It is a 1.6 APS-C crop. I have cat pix and moon pix and everything in between. I actually have to downscale photos for certain web sites. It travels well and it's easy to carry.

I'm in the same situation. The rolling shutter is the dealbreaker for me, along with shutter shock, but I don't think it's as big of a deal as is claimed. They advertise a faster shutter, but it's basically useless for consistent results. Unless you want to run around wasting memory space and battery bursting everything with electronic shutter, hoping you'll get enough good shots at a faster frame rate. Otherwise it has a similar mechanical shutter speed. The video features, and focusing system are an upgrade, but not a $1500 upgrade.
@gerhardbotha7336
@gerhardbotha7336 2 ай бұрын
It is all BS. Shutter shock has been around for ever. There is none of it for most shutter speeds and mosts lenses. KZfaq morons. I upgraded from 7D mk1 and 1D3 to the R7. Awesome camera. If a stacked sensor R7 comes out tomorrow I will not be in a hurry to upgrade. I shoot BIF mainly with EF 500 L F4 is mk1 and EF 100-400 F5.6 mk2. Also use 0.71x speedbooster and 1.4x iii TC. I shoot 99% of shots with electronic shutter. Sensor skew is largely a non issue if you have 2 brain cells or more. If you have money for it, get it if you need the crop factor

@gerhardbotha7336 Ай бұрын
That shutter shock and rolling shutter is way over exaggerated by the tubers. Some people are just beyond help. If something can be fucked up, Jan or one of those fools will find a way to do it. The rest of us just take photos with no issues .

@@gerhardbotha7336 My post didn't age well. I ended up with the R7. I had image softness issues, so I returned for an R6 Mark II. On either of them, I only ever notice rolling shutter in the trees if I'm fast panning. They sometimes look like they're laying at an angle. If I know I'll be panning, I switch to electronic first curtain. Other than that I'm nearly full-time full electronic (40fps on R6 Mark II). FWIW, the R6 is better in every way except megapixels and reach.

obviously, on the software side, the newer system will always be better, but does the R7 have waterproofing? is it rugged, is the buffer enough to keep you shooting, what's 3rd party looking like on RF? When you buy a new body you have to think about the future of that mount.

I upgraded from the 7D and 1D3 a year ago. The R7 is in a different league. Rolling shutter is a non problem in reality. I am still using only EF glass. It is like having a new set of lenses. I recently got the Metabones speedbooster also. Awsome! If I could get good images with the 7D back then, I still can today. But the R7 gives me 2x the rez, more than twice the low light performance, IBIS, the best AF in the world, access to more lenses you can shake a stick at, proper video etc etc. I like it so much, I doubt I would look into a FF body any time soon. I shoot mainly birds in flight and wildlife in general here in South Africa.

@@gerhardbotha7336 does it address the EVF lag issue with precapture option like Sony A9III? If not, it's still not 100% suitable for action photography. And since my DSLRs nail the subjects at the speed of light, I don't need to switch.

My 7Dii was failing and i made the jump to mirrorless after some hesitation. R7 was not out yet, so i started with thR6. Superb eye focus, up to 20 fps SILENT, better image quality at higher ISO and did i mention silent shutter!?! I finally spent some time with the R7 which i chose for its crop sensor and 1.6x extra reach in combination with the 30+MP. Loving it for the reach and image quality. I must admit that the R6ii has much better AF (could not afford the R3 which would be even better) and track animals or people's eyes much better and quicker and more consistently sticking with it!! Overall though, I had great experiences with the R7 and EF lenses like the EF 300 2.8 L IS or 70-200 2.8 iii using the crop sensor magnification. R7 is the best Canon crop sensor currently on the market. Curious about a possible R7 mark 2....

Is that EF 300mm 2.8L IS the mark 1 or 2 version? If its the Mk1, do you feel like the autofocus speeds on a mirrorless body is good enough for capturing birds in flight?

I shoot sport and have an R7 and 7Dmkii - I prefer the 7D in all honesty. Does anyone know how to stop the EVF turning off on the R7? Really annoying when I want to pick up and start shooting action and having to wait for it turn back on

The only way I can think to do that would be to expand the power saving timer, but it will make the battery consumption so much worse

For me the main advantage would be the IBIS of the R7. On the other hand that is one more thing that could break. I wish Canon at least gave us an option to still buy DSLRs. They would not have to put a lot of effort into it. They could just put modern sensors and faster chips into the old DSLRs without redesigning the bodies. I have tested mirrorless cameras on photo fairs and I very much dislike electronic viewfinders. They have a much lower dynamic range than optical viewfinders and in low light they show visible noise. So I decided to keep my 1D X until it finally breaks and is not repairable. Two years ago I already had to pay more than 600 Euros for replacing the main board.

Cons of R7: - GPS (for exif) comes from phone. You have to connect it. It's almost ok, when shooting with one lens. Annoying AF when you keep changing lenses. - Buffer is a a joke. - Noise levels could be lower, but hey, it's a 32Mp aps-c. Pros: - 32Mp aps-c is a heaven for wild life shooter if you have enough light. This kinda pixel density really loves sharp lenses (like rf100-500 or primes). - In camera focus stacking. If only that could produce raw. The small buffer is a dark cloud on this great feature. - Body size. It's small. First it was weird, but after one week it felt good. - IBIS ❤. Just one lens (old Sigma 12-24 with speedbooster) have given me hard time. IBIS off and it works fine. All the other Tamron, Sigma or ef-Canons have worked perfectly with IBIS. - Auto focus and especially eye detection is superb. - Possibility to choose between best choice of the both worlds: normal ef2rf-adapter or speedbooster with wider angle. Those are just few thoughts. I'm a wild life stills shooter.

I shoot motorsports, don't get the R7. I had it for a few months and then i sold it. I got a 1DX2 instead. Focus is not as accurate for fast moving objects as the reviews on KZfaq might suggest. For portraits and wildlife, sure, it gets the job done, but not for motorsports.

@@simonwebling457 congrats! Which lenses do you have? i had a 6d mark 2 before my R7. The 6D was the third best DSLR Canon offered back then. I thought the R7 would be an upgrade, but the APSC sensor and the super expensive lenses made me go back to DSLRs. No regrets.

Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The R7 is not a replacement for the 7D Mk2, it is not fit to tie it's shoelaces. The build quality of the R7 is average at best and you definitely don't want to get caught in the rain. Canon admitted that it's weather sealing is not as good as the 7D Mk2 or the 90D. Add the buffer problems. Slow sensor. Extortionate lens prices. I looked to buy it to replace my 7D Mk2, trialed it, and ran away. The problem is that after waiting so long for the 7D Mk2 replacement, Canon lost me. Enter the Fuji X-H2S........... stacked sensor, 40 fps, and huge buffer. My Canon EF 100-400 mk2 + 1.4 TC Mk3 work flawlessly with the new camera, as does my super sharp Tamron 90 Macro (even though it should not be compatible). This Fuji is the true replacement for the 7d Mk2, it is the camera that the R7 should have been, and yet again Canon dropped the ball.
