I feel like a big part of it is your school admin... they don't seem to be very helpful or supportive for you going through this. You're a great teacher; you are doing everything you can! Hopefully your next job will be better❤️

Exactly! "Where's the administration in all of this?" is the question I was asking myself the whole time that Michelle was talking about these ongoing behavior issues....with just 9 days of school left. Obviously, from what we know about this young lady, she is a highly qualified and dedicated teacher who has thoughtfully spent time and resources trying to come up with different ways to correct these poor behaviors. She has also talked about communication with the parents (tho I don't know the extent of these conversations or how supportive the parents have been). For folks who don't teach: This particular case (and those like them) isn't an example of a teaching "problem" by a person with ineffective classroom management (though those cases exist too!). The problem here lies with the absence of a plan on a larger scale. Michelle needs to communicate with her administrators and show/explain all she's done to try to rectify the situation. An administrator might give some more ideas that he/she wants the teacher to try out, or they might ask that a child be sent to the office each time (tho this is only effective for so long). Ultimately, in situations this rough, the administration needs to lead a meeting with the teacher, counselor, student, and parents where all parties need to devise a plan that both school and home will *consistently* implement. spidey.senses.3104, I've been at the school before, and it was a nightmare! Thankfully, my current administration is leaps and bound better and supports their teachers. A good administration makes a world of difference for teachers, students, and parents.

Love that your channel is not all rainbows and butterflies- you show a very real side of teaching. I was feeling just like you a few months ago because of workplace bullying... I was ready to give up teaching and my life in China (I'm here with my fiancé). And then I found out the bully is quitting and I'm getting a promotion! Now I'm sooooo happy I kept at it when I was just like you, coming home and just crying and crying and feeling totally overwhelmed. Your love of teaching radiates from you. I'm rooting for you.

You got through your first year of teaching and you can get through this! Honestly, it's coming up to the end of the year and you seem to be more upset every week! Don't let your class get the better of you, at this stage adopt a don't care attitude and just have some end of year fun! There's no point letting behavior problems get to you anymore, you're out of the of there next month!!

Marissa For younger kids I find that having a spare desk beside my desk does the trick! I usually find that making them sit up beside me will keep them on their best behaviour! As for older kids I try to lay down the law at the start of the year with a class agreement so that they are involved in the process of making the standards, I wouldn't even call them rules! Also just try to come across as fair in your words and actions e.g. Tell your class that you want to balance fun and work this year but it's important to behave well in class in order for us to do the fun stuff. I also like to ask them to fill out questionnares at the start of the year about what subjects they like best and what recreational activities they enjoy e.g. art, sport, games so that they feel they have an input into what they will do this year and this shows them that their voice matters (and that they have to be respectful when they use this voice!!) Also if behaviour problems begin right at the start of the year with small issues in the classroom etc. stop it there and then, you have to set a standard of behaviour for the rest of the year and the older students like to test the waters!! Hope this helped 😊

I can tell you that my mom, a teacher of 25+ years, described what you are experiencing as "the year from hell". I have taught for 15 years and have also experienced a very challenging class similar to your class. it's an emotionally draining experience, but don't give up on teaching. I spent my third year crying on a regular basis and wanted to switch careers. I'm so happy I didn't....I've never experienced a year like that again. sending love and support your way.

As a former teacher (former school teacher turned homeschool Mom), my heart has been breaking for you as you've faced these classroom struggles. You are such a creative and positive person. The school year will be over soon. As much as I would hate to see the schools lose a teacher like you, your mental health is so much more important. Let's just hope this year was a fluke and next year will be a fresh start! Also, Congratulations on your two KZfaq recognitions!

Congratulations! You deserve all the accolades, and then some! I've only taught in a Title 1 school and although that may not be a fair comparison that how my days are for the past 14 years I've been teaching. Every year is my last year because I can't take it anymore, and even now I find myself already planning for next year. This year I was called the b word, the a, word, the d word. Things were written on bathroom stalls, and walls in the school about me. Of one thing I am sure! YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Don't ever forget that. It sucks that no one truly understands how hard teaching is, and many stand on the sidelines and judge but one day "Knuckles" or many who are like knuckles will find you and thank you. I PROMISE! They always do. Always because he/they may never have anyone else treat them with the same respect and care you have. They don't yet understand. I've had students tracks me down many years later/different states/school systems to say "Sorry" and "Thank you." You're lovely.

A lot of students bad mouthed me from the start, they never really gave me a chance. I struggled a lot. I am trying for my second year, hoping to find a school better fit because I have such a passion for teaching and I can't imagine doing anything else.

All grades are challenging these days~middle school especially~hormones. If you're certified for elementary, give it a shot, you may enjoy it more. Be sure you have someone to vent to 🗣. I've been teaching for 3 years and have made the decision this year to leave teaching. As much as I love it my mental health was suffering. I might go back into it when I've had a break but for now I'm done and it's heartbreaking! Make the best decision for you.x

LuvSoundz I just want to do something where I go and do my job and come home so some office work I think. Teaching is one of those professions where you put everyone else first and I don't think I can do that for the rest of my working life

I'm so glad that you resigned....they're missing out on a compassionate and genuine teacher for their school. Title 1 schools are awful....there's no excuse that students act in that manner because of their socioeconomic status....SO WHAT....I'm African-American, I grew up in a low income household, and in an urban neighborhood. There's was no way in the world that my parents would allow for me to act in the manner that these students behave in. I still went to college, finished, my daughter is now in college, and I'm working on my Doctorate in Education Leadership, and I work in Education research.....I can't wait to graduate with my Doctorate because I want to be more effective in Education reform, especially in Title 1 schools. There's too many excuses for this type of culutre in the school, I think about all of the international schools where students have much less than kids in the US classrooms. These international students are performing much better and behavior is really not an issue. I'm also going to start writing literature to wake up parents, educators in leadership, and the general public about this crisis in Title 1 schools.

Not all title 1 School are like this there's so much poverty in my county all but 1 school is title 1 and we don't see this crap. I think slot of it is the environment the parents are raising their kids in if the parents don't care the kids won't either

I have a class like this this year. I remember watching this video a couple of years ago and thinking man I hope I never get a class like this. But here I am...I have thought multiple times this year that I can't keep doing this. Thank you for being so honest because I now feel like I'm not alone in crying in my classroom, really frustrated and hurt with how my students behave, and not wanting to teach anymore. It's one year and it will pass.

Michelle- I use to teach at a tile 1 school and it took the biggest tole on me. Too many behavior problems, too much stress, and just overwhelmed with anxiety. This year I switched schools to a much better school and I can't even tell you the drastic difference . It's your environment, it's not you. Once you change the environment, your love and passion will be back. Just thought I would share because I totally relate to you. Sending you love from Southern California ❤️

I know this is an old video but seeing this gave me some validation on what I feel because if even you can feel like this, I know I'm not alone. In my 23 years of teaching I've literally had 22 years of the class you have here. It's been horrendous and I've become so jaded and bitter. Granted, I've had good kids here and there that I absolutely love to death. But dealing with that kind of stress every day and no support from my admin has taken its toll. I'm on anti anxiety meds and anti depressants. I gained so much weight over the years my health started to suffer. I had spiraled down to a really, really bad place. Quit your job people say, but when you are so close to retirement, it's not feasible. So, when this whole COVID thing hit, I used the time at home to lose 42 pounds and try to take a little more care of my mental health and body. Don't get me wrong, I'm still not doing so great. I'm still on meds and I'm still not fond of my job, to put it nicely. But I'm trying hard to get through what time I have left and taking it day by day. You help me do that. Sometimes I will just put on your video and watch or listen to them for a few hours. Seriously, hours. So thank you for what you do. You truly inspire me and bring back a little bit of that spark I used to have. You motivate me to want to do better and give me hope so I can get through the days. Thank you.

OMG!!! You are the MOST organized person I have ever met ... and my husband has Asbergers Syndrome AND. OCD!!!. When I grow up I want to be just like you!!! (Oh, by the way, I'm 65!!! LOL!!). You are totally phenomenal!!! I catch what I can (You talk faster than I do and I'm a New Yorker!). I look forward to implementing some of your ideas in my classroom this year. Just survive until the end of the year. The kids that none of us can help will move on and it will be okay! I used to worry about being able to help all children, but it honestly doesn't always work that way. Do the best you can for all of your kids and make it until the end of the year!! 😉

I cried right along with you. last year I won district wide first year prek teacher of the year when I was at my old school... this year I was excessed out to a head start program, my class was so difficult to manage. there was hitting, running around throwing things, kids punching, biting and jumping on my assistant. everyone talked about my class, how it's the worst class, they dont know what to do to help, etc. i just want you to know that you are not alone. take this year as a learning experience. & know that if you get through this year, you can get through anything.

What you begin sharing at around the 26:00 mark is exactly how I felt all year. Difference? It wasn't the kids ~ it was the staff & leadership. After 13 years I have resigned, and in the next three weeks will be working into a new career field. Like you ~ I came to the conclusion it was a healthy environment and I am worth more. As soon as I turned in that resignation I felt like a ceiling had been lifted off my head and the whole world was open to me once again. I am not saying it's best for you to do as I have, but I am sharing because I want you to know that you are not alone. Every teacher has to face the wall... and decide what's best for them. Not what's best for the classroom ~ because we can be quite the martyrs by nature.

When I started teaching we used to be able to suspend the children for 3 days at a time, trust me they came back better behaved cause the patents got the point quick, it was sad to see that rule go.

I know this is an old video but I FEEL for you completely. This is how I felt this entire school year, specifically. As a 3rd year teacher, this group of students are by far the most challenging. Constant disruptions during lessons... fights with peers... incentives not working... etc. I questioned my career path a few times, but at the end of the day, I feel like Teaching chose ME. I look at all the challenges and know that if faced with similar issues in the future, I will know how to handle them without a doubt! I leaned that as much as teachers try to transform children, we are only seed planters. It may take a while, months or years, before that seed grows into fruition and there is significant change . Whether we are in the classroom or not, educators can always make a difference!

Don't feel bad about having bad days. It happens to all of us. I literally had that with my 6th graders this week. With the end of the year approaching, their behavior is getting antsy! I literally stood at the front of my room the other day and just waited for them to be quiet. When they finally were, I gave them the biggest rant of how disappointed I was in them because they usually are pretty good. I feel as teachers, sometimes we need a class like the one you current have to prove to us WHY we went into that profession. You will probably never forget this group of students but in the end, it will only make you a better teacher for the future classes you have.

Enjoyed the vlog! I taught for 11 years before our son was born. I knew I would stay home with him. After being out of the classroom for 4 years I'm pretty positive I will never go back! I so remember how frustrating it can be when the same students made every day difficult. Hang in there, you are almost done!

I'm 17. I'm a senior in high school and I don't even want to be a teacher, I want to be a police officer. However, I seriously cannot stop watching your videos for some reason!! Don't give up Michelle! It looks like you are a wonderful teacher! Class management is part of our job but sadly we cannot do the parents job of educating kids. If some of them are not manageable, don't feel like you are at fault. You are trying everything you can. at the end of the day, if kids don't have any structure at home they won't be able to behave in class, no matter what you do. Cheer up!

You are a wonderful teacher and you have to STOP doubting it!! You love your students and they love you. Their behavior problem is not your fault. You go above and beyond for your kids and everyone can see that. Just hold on to the fact that you're making an impact in their lives even if it doesn't seem like it. Stay strong and look forward to the new exciting things that are heading your way. Look at all the things you're accomplishing and acknowledge that you're making it happen. You inspire me! I am an avid organizer and train my students to be but after watching you I see that I have a long way to go. If I can do half of what you are doing I'll be golden. You are doing a fantastic job. Stay encouraged and keep the faith. The students love you. Try to remember many are struggling with their inner pain and circumstances. It is not necessarily reflection of you or your teaching. You're a sweetheart. Keep praying.

I would love to have you as a teacher. We had 5 boys that were bad and my teacher pulled them in the hall and gave them their work and made them work outside in the hall. Girl, you rock!!! I love and appreciate your honesty. I have been teaching for 6 years, and I have the same questions and struggles. It takes so much energy to manage all the tasks required for teaching effectively. I do believe that a different school, a better fit, will be refreshing for you. I don't think people understand the effect that the stress of teaching has on teachers. I don't know what it will take to change the education system in the U.S., but I believe your honesty and transparency will help spark the change! You're doing your best! The year is almost over. I watch all of your videos and my year has been nearly identical to yours. The behavior problems and the lack of support from administration- everything has just been similar to what you've gone through. It will get better, you will get through this. I've been questioning my choice to teach since January, and I start my first full-time teaching position this fall. Hope it's not as bad as your experience, or I will definitely find a new career.

I want to thank you for being so real!! After 22 years of teaching, I had the most challenging class in all of my teaching career this year, where it seemed like nothing worked. I cried with you!! I finally started to break-through with my students that needed the most support with an explicit chart of incentives and consequences, small group lunch with the teacher with those needing most support, and more communication with parents/guardians. Then Covid-19 school closures hit. It will be the class I will never forget! Thank you for all these videos, which are keeping me entertained and inspired!!

Oh my goodness. I know this video is super old, but I am so glad that I came across it! I have watched you for last year now (the newer stuff) and I am so happy that your teaching career has gone up from this point. However, I am glad this content is still on your channel because I totally relate to this video! This was my whole first year of teaching summed up. Seeing your teaching journey gives me hope for the years to come. I am hoping Year 2 is better than Year 1 for me. Even though we are all unsure what fall will look like.

Hang in there girl! It's clear that you've got what it takes. I'm wondering if there needs to be some changes in the overall school culture and approach towards supporting your student population. Could it be that they need something different, rather than all of the extrinsic rewards and incentives to feel valued and motivated to do well and get along in school? Just a thought.

All of what you are going through will make you that much of a stronger teacher next year. There were years that the disrespect was seething from the group of children. There are some years I think back to and remember not knowing how I would make it to the end. Keep at it, you are an inspiration to kids even if you don't realize it.

You remind me of my mom she was a kindergarten teacher and was also very young when she started and had a lot of tough classrooms and stressed but she is the most creative person and had the best looking classrooms and to this day years and years and years later her old students keep in touch with her and tell her how amazing she was as a teacher and how she impacted their lives. She was always somehow sooo incredibly good with the students that gave her a harder time. She was actually able to retire early at 47 this year so stay positive and hopeful you are amazing and sooo good at keeping your classroom together!!! (:

Girl, I've been there! Last year I had dreams of walking off the job in the middle of the day. I started doing mindful activities with my kids and it started to turn the tides for the kids and honestly for me too.... You may want to try that. Lots of stuff to use on gonoodle you could use as a resource Pinterest has tons of stuff too. One thing I'm wondering is why your admin is not stepping in to support you! Especially since you have other teachers backing you up. Keep your head up, we're thinking of you and sending you support!

I can't begin to explain how seeing this video made me feel like I am not the only one who doesn't feel like the greatest teacher at times. I know for sure tomorrow morning I am going to go in refreshed and ready to go. Hang in and if times get tough know there is a fellow teacher who you helped and appreciates you! The bright side to it all is, if you're at the hardest point of your teaching career there is hope. If you're capable of getting through the hardest times, you can conquer just about any other challenges that you come across. Start with the hardest and the rest becomes easier. Now you're past that part and you're moving on. Now it gets easier.

I was having a low week a while back because I'm student teaching in a tough class with high behavior issues. I decided before writing lessons to chill by watching YT. I happened upon your channel and your infectious optimism motivated me to create my own math lesson vs using the co-teacher's that it went over really well-even my behaviors participated. Thank you for the motivation to keep going I was starting to ponder other avenues when I'm done with my program even though I very much dig working with kids.

Just make the walk 15 minutes the write 15 minutes the whole class everyone has t suffer. And tell you good kids to tell there friends they should act right so everyone dosen't have to suffer

I've just started following you! You are an amazing teacher! I am so impressed with the amount of knowledge you have as a new teacher. I know this was a very difficult and challenging school year for you! You've made it through and believe me you have had a very positive impact on those children's lives. You might not think so because sometimes even when everything you try their behaviors don't change, you think you have failed. But you haven't! What you showed these children is that no matter how bad their behavior was, you never gave up on them. And you were probably the only person in their lives who did that! I've been teaching 19 years in a title 1 school and I can assure you, you made a difference!

Michelle, my 14th year of teaching ended last week. This was one of the toughest years I have had since my first year of teaching. I teach high school science and am the department chair. I felt like I was being pulled in a million directions. I blew off a lot of steam by starting a morning gym routine. It helped me get through the day. You are an awesome teacher who just ended up with a tough group. I know you are going to get a call from a great school and they will be happy to have you. Congratulations on your KZfaq success, you deserve it.

Thank you for making these vlogs. As a second year teacher these make me feel like I’m not alone (even if this is from two years ago). I cried when you got those words of affirmation because that is totally the best feeling; they ALWAYS come when you’re at your lowest and need them the most. I know this is kinda late in the game, however, next year if this happens again, talk to admin about switching kids to other classes. Sometimes kids like that feed off others like them. If they don't have an audience, they won't act out. At this point, bounce them out of the class. Talk to your team teachers. They should be willing to help you out. Remove the problem from the class. If you send out 4 or 5, then you do it. Since you have been documenting and those kids have been receiving referrals, then at this point the kids should be suspended for the rest of the year. There isn't a reason to keep those kids in the class disrupting the learning environment.

Seriously I don't think you know how much your videos help when you are having an awful day in your own classroom. I work for Head Start in one of the poorest counties in Florida..my first month of being a lead teacher I went home everyday crying it was horrible. The demand that is put on you by the administration is nothing compared to what your students put you through daily. Thank you for being so real and showing that you can get past a difficult day you just have to keep pushing forward! 😊😁

As a new teacher I really enjoy watching your videos because they are so cathartic. I know that sometimes it feels that the behavior difficulties are endless and you've exhausted all of your strategies. But, you do make a difference. The fact that you take time out of your day to have those heart to hearts with students to tell them that you care, shows that you are meant to be a teacher. Those students will remember the care and compassion you gave to them, even if their behavior does not change this year. I highly recommend the book, "Positive Discipline". It is super helpful for understanding the root of behavior complications and positive ways to intervene and establish proactive strategies. I know how it feels to spend your recess crying and become helplessly overwhelmed, but you are not alone. Anytime I feel this way I read a book like the one I mentioned above or watch Rita Pierson's video, Every Kid Needs a Champion.

I love this! Thank you! I am currently a student at a two year college and I am in my last semester for my associates degree. I am preparing for commencement and transfer to a four year university to finish my last two years. Thank you for showing the bad days with the good! I plan on being an elementary teacher and your videos really help. Even knowing what i will have to do as a teacher, it just makes me all the more excited to becoming a teacher!

I'm so sorry you are having a rough year. I have taught for 18+ years and last year I had a year like you are describing. I couldn't get a sub to come to my room for anything. I remember breaking down and sobbing in the hallway where the guidance counselor found me. I was about to hyperventilate, and all I could say was that I wanted to be anywhere but at school. I made it through - one day at a time, and by reminding myself that not all years were like this. You're going to make it. We're pulling for you.

Just breathe through tough moments, and what also works for me - like my mom says, "this too shall pass", I've had those thoughts of - is it worth it? - it is. You're a great teacher, keep pushing forward!

Wonderful work! I discovered your channel because of the creator on the rise feature and am really glad I did! I am also a teacher and looking forward to start a second channel related to secondary social studies teaching later this summer and you have given me a lot of inspiration and ideas already! What you have been going through sounds really challenging, but I am so excited for you that summer is around the corner, and can really tell that even though you might not feel like you are doing what you would like to be doing, it seems like you do a great job and really care about the profession. That being said, you definitely deserve to take time for yourself and put yourself first too!

The end of the year is so hard. This was an exceptionally trying year for me as well, I find that the kids that don't have a stable supportive home life begin to really act out as the end gets closer because they get anxious about the summer. Plus, I think they are just done as well. 😄 Hang in there, you are a kind, loving, gifted teacher and you will get through.

You are an amazing teacher! I went through a rough spell with some mental health issues during my first round of student teaching. As a result, I had to withdraw. However, I overcame those issues and will be repeating student teaching again in the fall. You are an inspiration to many people, whether you know it or not. Keep your head up!

You have no idea how much i needed this video. I teach 7th grade right now and I've never seen anything like that before. I almost never get any teaching done. They're acting up, they're on a very low level, they get into fights with other kids, it's a disaster. Every day. They don't care about my punishments, the parents don't care and on top of that, coworkers complain about those kids and make me responsible. Yesterday I told my bf that I was done with teaching. BUT. He reminded me: I love teaching! We all do. It's the best thing in the world! We know this :) it's the end of the year. Here in Germany we have 4 weeks left... we'll get through this and have a fresh start in the fall. You're an amazing teacher. Look at your materials, your classroom.. you put so much work into everything. It will get better :)

You are one of the most inspirational person in my life. If I had you for my teacher I would be so lucky. My teachers would never do the great things you do got your kids. It's so easy to feel alone when you have a year like this, but I PROMISE you're not - I just finished my 6th year and have had 2 years in that time that ended with me planning to start PT school in the fall. Needless to say, I have continued teaching, and have had some AMAZING classes since then. You will make it, and it will get better !! Until then, make sure you balance trying hard with maintaining your mental & emotional health - that's the only way you'll get through years like this. Teaching is so, so hard, but the good parts make it worth it. Focus on the little positives throughout your day with your other kids. You got this !!! ☀

As someone who teaches self-contained special education classes, I feel your pain. I have been teaching for 20 years. I have had years where chairs, tables, books, and everything else was thrown at me. I actually left teaching for about 3 years and was ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE!! I knew that I needed to go back to teaching and have been so happy ever since. I believe that God has gifted you and you will not be truly happy doing anything else. You may want to look into alternative teaching opportunities ( reading coach, mentor teaching,etc.) if you need a break ( or KZfaq/ FT?). Don't give up!! You can do this!

i totally understand what you are going through. i am going through the same thing. i don't know what's the solution to these really hard to handle students. i keep thinking about ways to handle them... but it feels like you have no solutions. but you are such a good teacher. you inspired me... to work harder for my students as you do...because you work so so hard.

I want to encourage you I truly believe it's the kids that you have. Not all kids are like that and I believe because the kids know that you are kind hearted and they take advantage of it. Keep pushing your almost done and then you start brand new. Please be encouraged because I love watching your vlogs and you help me to keep organized in my classroom and that's all the way in the Bahamas.

This was my first year teaching. I almost quit 3 weeks in. Crying breakdown at a truck stop on my way home almost quit. Your kids sound like mine even though mine were 6 years older. It got a little better as the year went on, but not by much. Out of 13 or so teachers in my grade level, all but 4 have left after this year. Hang in there. It does get better and the best part of teaching is that the next year is a fresh start.

Try reverse psychology.. I tell my students "I know you can be disrespectful and misbehave but I can bet money that you can't behave and be respectful"... Challenge them.
