00:00 Introduction
00:48 The Burberry Trench Coat
Thomas Burberry wasn’t quite the inventor of the trench coat but his name became synonymous and he popularized it and therefore, today, if people think about a trench coat, the first thing that comes to mind is a Burberry trench coat. The company has been making trench coats for over 150 years, they've been around since 1856 and it's just an iconic garment.
The classic Burberry double breasted trench coat today costs eighteen hundred and ninety five dollars in the Burberry website. Yes, you should definitely go with a double-breasted version because that's the original. The current heritage models they offer have the typical Novacek, they also added it underneath the collar which looks nice if you like it popped up, but also the lining is Novacek. Novacek is a name for a specific tartan that is usually associated with Burberry, although it's also imitated by other companies. Unlike in previous years, this trench coat is made in England as the original one and it is made out of a hundred percent cotton gabardine which is a fabric Thomas Burberry invented or at least became famous and well known for, and it's the ideal material you want for a trench coat.
The great thing about a modern Burberry trench coat is that it comes in four lengths as well as four fit styles. Now, the fit of all Burberry trench coats is slimmer than it used to be it's simply an adaptation to modern times which in my opinion, is not a bad thing because you want to trim look that flatters your body line. The relaxed fit is definitely the widest fit they offer and it's made for layering, so if you wear jackets underneath a lot, maybe a sweater or a cardigan, this is the fit you should get.
The classic fit is more tapered in the waist yet you can still wear a suit jacket underneath of it.
The slim fit is a slimmest fit they offer and it's not meant to be worn with something underneath but it creates a very nice if you shape.
Last but not least, there's a tailored fit. the tailored fit is somewhere between a classic fit and a slim fit. In terms of a length, the original trench coat was quite long and ranged from ankle length, all the way up to knee length. Today, Burberry’s lengths are much shorter.
04:47 Is It Worth It To Get The New Burberry Trench Coat?
Every gentleman should have a trench coat but it doesn't necessarily have to be Burberry. Fortunately, it won't go out of style and Burberry is associated with the original. Even though almost 1900 dollars for a cotton overcoat is quite a bit of money, you'd consider the cost per wear as this garment can be worn in every transitional season between fall winter, and spring summer.
On the other hand, if you want a flattering fit and you want to choose between the different lengths and the fits, and if you have the money, it’s definitely worth it. It's a good investment, it won't go out of style, and you won't regret your purchase.
05:51 Are Vintage Burberry Trench Coats Worth It?
Yes, absolutely! No matter your budget everyone can afford that one. You can find them at flea markets or maybe on eBay, just make sure you're able to return them. As always, it pays to know the measurements of the garment as well as your own so you'll find something that fits.
06:52 So At The End Of The Day, Is A Burberry Trench Coat Worth It?
New, it is not worth it if you want the original length and the original width and fullness however, if you want the modern fit and if you have the money, it's definitely worth it. if you go with a vintage trench coat, it is definitely worth it because it will never go out of style you can always wear it. the cost per wear is low and it’s just a classic staple that every man should have.

I have two Burberrys’ Trench coats and I get made fun of quite often in school. Luckily, I come prepared, as I absolutely don’t care about the opinions of others. I can only recommend flea markets and thrift stores, you may find high end models for cheap. I found mine there for £30, it’s from the pre-2000 era (it says Burberrys’ not Burberry) has all buttons and all other accessories, fits perfectly as well! I love it, and some random Kids talking smack won’t stop me.

crazy how kids are making fun of you because it shows they have no idea about the prices of this stuff. they probably wear lacoste and think it's high end. they wouldn't bully you for your clothes if they found out the price tag. and keep wearing them, they're elegant and timeless.

The lining in sleeves are almost always viscose, or something similar, as it allows for a frictionless putting on/taking off. Were they to use cotton etc. you would have to pull the cuffs of your shirt, and adjust your sleeves all the time. The same often applies to the shoulder area in a lining, you don't want it to get "stuck" to your clothes underneath.

I'm now in my 70's, and there is a Burberry in my closet. I was passed down to me by my late father. These coats wear like iron. When I put on my Burberry, I actually often think of my late grand uncle, who was a sergeant, fighting in France during WWI. The strength of the coat . . . the memories it revives - they're all a lot to ask from a mere article of clothing. In Mandarin Chinese we have a saying: 'What is expensive is not expansive - what is inexpensive is not really inexpensive'. Just remember, the Burberry you buy today, maybe worn by your grandson tomorrow. 'What is expensive - is not expensive - what is inexpensive - is not inexpensive'.

The vintage Burberry is the one to get. It's pure class and will never go out of style like the new models. Find one with the flaps over the pockets, a little worn is cool. Make sure the label has the s after Burberry, its the best made. The single breasted is cool with a nice Fedora and scarf. The well informed will know what you're wearing and find a way to acknowledge you style...

The viscose lining in the sleeves is used for the wearer to better slip in the trenchcoat, since viscose is kind of slidy. It's less easy to get into sleeves with a cotton lining. That's why a lot of jackets have polyester sleeve linings, viscose is already an upgrade. But you are right, it's not luxury. Burberry could go for a tencel / lycocell -mix -lining, that would be awesome.

Raphael, I asked on the boutonniere video a question, but didn't get an answer so I'll ask again here. I bought an Orchid boutonniere from your site. In the video, most of the jackets, suits are with large lapels, but my suit is with slim lapels, does it still work with slim lapel suit? Also, does the Orchid boutonniere work with a dark charcoal suit, and can you place a boutonniere on a suit or not? Thanks

I would say that boutonnieres are more for events than a suit which is normally for work. If it is for an event, however, I would say go for it.

Only for 25y/o + men or if you’re classy enough to pull it off. Short length is seasonal/trendy and if you’re less formal. For the older gents or if you’re looking for the classic/traditional/timeless look, then no matter how short you are go for the mid length to long version or just long enough to get it a tiny bit past the knee.

Hello! Quick question, I am thinking about buying a Burberry trench coat but yes, it is indeed a lot of money for it, so, my question would be if this kind of coat would an all season coat? I mean, if in cold winter would really make me feel warm?

I really like the idea of this becoming a regular series. "Is it worth it" videos always tend to be enjoyable to watch. I like your open opinions on different views as well.

Hi, do you know if it is possible to tell the production date of a trench coat, based on the order number of the sizing label?

Is it possible to have alterations made to a trench coat? Picked up a vintage Burberry trench coat at a local thrift store and it is quite big on me in chest and length. I'm pretty short, so I would prefer a more modern fit. Does it make sense to have alterations done (cost and time wise), or should I look for other options? Thanks

I like the Montblanc and Gucci idea. Maybe also consider Persol sunglasses, Zegna suits, Louis Vuitton and Goyard chests and luggage, waxed cotton Barbour jackets, Tod's driving shoes, Hermes leather, Berluti leather, Bottega Veneta Intrecciato leather, Loro Piana vicuna, Ralph Lauren cashmere sweaters, J. Press Shaggy Dog sweaters, Burberry scarves, Rolex and Patek Philippe watches, and Moncler down jackets

I actually spoke to an ex-manager of Burberry who lost his job when they shipped everything abroad. He had a lot of negative things to say about the drop in manufacturing quality
