@@thai2go The best captain in my time watching the leafs is Wendel Clark. With all his passion and skill, the Buds accomplished nothing. Same with Sundin and Gilmour. Phaneuf? Lol. Ramage? Lol. Even in Edmonton with McDavid winning the Conn Smythe… he’s accomplished nothing from a team perspective… just individual awards. The problem in TO is management… they suck because it’s about money, not championships. The Leafs fans are kind of like Edmonton fans… a bit whiney but at least the Oilers have won the cup 5 times in the past 50 years (6 if you include the New York Oilers of 1994).

its not about the "C " . .Its about sending him a message that they dont want him here .Hopefully taking the C off him will open his eyes and he will waive his NMC .He is still an ok player but not at $11M cap hit .If he was making half of that everything would be fine .The only way this team will complete next year is if they get rid of his $11M cap hit .Otherwise its another 1st round exit .Mark my words

I don't know why you would do that as no one else on the team has proven themselves to be a leader. Tavares, who's admittedly lost a step, has the necessary maturity of a leader and his loyalty to the Leafs has never been in question. The same can't be said of the rest of the core who are more than willing to sell their services to the highest bidder year in and year out.

Granted Dubas was foolish enough to give to him but he could have done the classy thing 6 years ago and taken a hometown discount of say $8.5M a year .THEN he would be a class act . Look at Stamkos .only made $8.5 M the last few years and brought 2 cups ( and another finals apperarance ) to Tampa .Looks at SId ? $8.7 M a year and he also brought 3 CUps home .THOSE guys are class acts all the way .Tavares is a lose take the C off him and hopfully he will get the hint and waive hi NMC

dude its not about making Matthews the captain .its about sending a message to JT that he is not wanted here anymore .His $11M cap hit is preventing the team from adding the depth players to win in the playoffs ( .compare Floridas bottom 6 to the LEafs bottom 6 there is not contest ) Hopefully be removing him as Captain ,he will get the message and waive hi NMC .There are teams out there with plenty of cap room that would take the final year of his deal .All he has to do is waive .

Leafs were on track during the Babcock era. Young talent was growing into superstars, vets were buying in, role players were committed and valuable. Reilly was the leader during that time. Dubis changed the culture, the roster and gave jt the c. Reilly has it in him to be the c. I say him

Just let the guy play out his contract. Leave the C; he can't produce like he used to. Don't do him dirty. Respect the player, and respect the veteran leadership he applies. Stripping the "C" is a bad look for the Leaf's franchise.

Yes, that is a proper move A.S.A.P if you want Matthews to step up more than he has but what happens when some one takes on a substantial job is that he might not score as many goals this year but help out in different aspects and raise the game play of those in the blue & white Maple Leaf logo. Most don't understand unless your a Gen X with experience in high performance sports with life skills and experience. this here is a little short excerpt to be discussed for the pro's with experience in their designated practiced exercise/sports.

@@floyd2222 What you said is the main reason that they should put an effort in to Matthews as to work on his overall package of game play. If not, the Leaf's will stay idle until they take an initiative to actually give shits about winning and all the variables that construe to being not only a team in a league but to being amongst the top tier in the league. Matthews may not want the Cataincy but then that will be to his own demise as to not have taken the initiative to be better than he was yesterday. You must first be willing to help yourself before you can help others. And with that said, their ain't no one else but Matthews and coaching Matthews with Champion mentality psychology for the Leaf's to win a long awaited Stanley Cup. Two wrongs don't make a right. Matthews needs a friend in the likes of a Mario Lemieux or Gretzky and it doesn't have to be any of those two but someone that has played and demonstrated sportsmanship. Its not just the leafs using gear its rampent in all pro sports. Even trainers get the heads up when league officials are coming into test. Some ex player disclosed this on a podcast..not my words but I believe him. I'm into bodybuilding and know how things work sometimes. Guy also said... Trainers pass this info to players...lol The better the player more money for everyone. They dont care. I personally dont think less of a player if he does....too many do and its ok in my books. I just dont view it as cheating bc its the norm thats why.

They should do that. I feel his play has suffered because of Toronto pressures and has too many nights you wouldn’t know he is in the game, which is not leading by example. His interviews are always robot like and not from a leadership view. Auston is built for the spotlight and leads by example every game! It’s not a figure head, every winning team has a leader who leads in the room and backs his words up on the ice which inspires the team to follow. The C matters!

I think the prudent way to go about this is to have a 1 on 1 with JT. Ask him how he feels about it and explain the direction the Leafs want to go on it. If he agrees great, if not, well I think he will not like his next contract offer no matter which team he is with. Thornton, Marleau both lost the C and the Sharks did well following. If both parties handle it with respect of each other it can end well for both. This is Matthews team ( he had the C except for his childish incident in AZ ) time to let this thoroughbred out of the coral and "C" what he is capable of. JT still can play a part on this team if he wishes at a much lower team friendly deal. IMO

Letting Marner play out the year then walk, or even worse sign him to infinity is very bad business. The core has had 8 years to do anything post season. Only once have they managed to move past a beat up and tired Tampa team. Marner is an excellent winger, but something must change player and cap wise.

I never liked the decision to name him the Captain. But there is no reason to change it now. The only reason to put in on Auston is tp force him to do more media work and therefore face the music, John is fed up to face... But I doubt John wants to give up the C willingly...

this is just a low class move for the Leafs to do. given the other leadership decisions made by the Leafs corporation in the past I could see them trying to push it. BUT : I don't think Berube would be on board and I would like to think that some of the other veteran players on the team would tell them where to stick this idea. and what would the next guy to have the C have to say about it? or would they just leave the C vacant like it was for a good while years ago? yeah thats a good look?!

Tavares lost the "C" when after game seven he said "we're almost there" in regards to a first round exit. Edmonton is "almost there" after losing by literally one shot in the Stanley Cup Final. The San Jose Sharks took the "C" away from both Patrick Marleau and Joe Thorton and then made a Stanley Cup Final with both dudes still on the team lol I can totally see this happening.

Tavares should not only be out as captain , he should be out of the team completely. Stamkos made 8.5 million dollars a year Last 5 Years and brought home 2 Stanley Cups to Tampa plus another triple to the final. Mathews at the time & of course now was to be the Captain.That’s until 34 ran around town exposing himself & threatening a female security guard during that evening back in that summer.His friends even confirmed it & tried to convince him to stop.It wasn’t something he did once during the evening it was multiple times.Thats why he didn’t get the C at that time.Will he be the captain this time next year?Most likely when JT is gone or takes a team friendly pay cut.

All the Leafs have to do is give him a choice option number 1-waive your NMC so the Leafs can try to trade the last year of that deal OR option number 2 refuse to waive your nmc and go through the humiliation of getting the captaincy stripped off you. make your choice John and make it before training camp starts .no matter which option he chooses he's not returning to training camp as captain

I don’t know much about the Leafs though a close friend who is a hardcore fan had two things to consider 1) Tavares is overpaid for his production 2) He is a big disappointment. I may not be an expert but it doesn’t sound like he has anyone else to blame but himself!

Marner led the team twice in scoring in the last 5 years, he’s a point+ a game player in that time as well….and a combined plus 110 over the last five …averaging plus 20 for each year…if he’s not worth it no one is.

Does scoring 59 goals mean you should be given Captaincy? NOPE! lol I see too different guys here... Tavares a more serious responsible family guy. Just a perception. A guy who trains hard . Then Matthews a more rebel type of guy...again just a perception. At the end of the day it seems that JT would be best suited but we dont know what goes on in dressing room. I would say that its Tavares responsibility to keep everyone accountable and I get the sense that he maybe too soft. Then again he could be different behind closed doors. I think main issue is cap structure. Psychology of sport...you cant allocate all that money around 4 guys...it creats division in dressing room. You would have to be brain dead to think otherwise....I dont believe Dubas was....plan was how much money can we achieve and not actually looking through the lens of winning a cup. Horrible organization and ownership.

Stripping taking the Captiancy away from John Travares does what? Is it going to make the team better in the playoffs? If you are going to issue ! Appoint letters to a sweater they might want to think before they give a player or players an A or C on their sweaters. Marner does not deserve to be a alternate captain ! What characteristics does he possess that warrants him to be a alternate Captain? What characteristics does Mathews Nylander have that warrants them to wear an A or C? It just can't be about points! goals! Skill and ability! When you look some players that are captains and alternate captains they have much skill and ability levels ! They play at a different level and pace! And they have earned respect from other players on others teams by not being one dementional !
