Kanan is top tier for me. Most people talk about Ezra when they are describing him as a father, but to me (while of course I loved his role with Ezra) the best episode showcasing his character is surprisingly trials of the darksaber. He has one quote in that episode that brings me to tears every time I hear it because of how much it shows everything I love about him: “You’ve come a long way in a very short time. Where you go from here is up to you, but know, that this family will stand with you no matter what you choose” He doesn’t care about Sabine’s past mistakes after she opens up, he isn’t angry she hid this from him, he isn’t disappointed in her. He is there for her in ways her own blood family wasn’t. He would’ve stood with her even had she refused to take the darksaber. He is the embodiment of compassion and patience despite all the trials he has gone through.

It's a real shame he was rated so low. Consider how incredible it is that Kanan as a character is simultaneously both among the "truest" Jedi we've seen and also one of the most universally relatable SW characters. Rebels really is a criminally underrated show, and this is just another example of why.

I give Kanan an A. His journey of being a jedi, guiding Ezra and the Ghost crew through the perils of the Empire, and his eventual sacrifice to save all of them including Hera and his future son yet to be born was incredible. Rebels shined a lot with his character

The Kanan story that really resonated with me came quite early in the series. There's an episode where they hear a rumour that Luminara Unduli had survived Order 66, and he immediately latches onto the idea that she would be a much better teacher for Ezra. Ezra interprets this as Kanan wanting to be free of the burden of having to train him. As a dad, that really struck a chord with me - that our kids don't necessarily need 'the best'; they need _you._ And that my own confidence issues can be even more harmful to the kids than they are to me, if I let them get out of control. And that nobody can hurt a person the way a parent can hurt their child, if they're not careful. Yeah, sure...Rebels was "for kids"...

I love that you mentioned how the Jedi can't really be aloof from the rest of the galaxy and protect it. That's the main reason I love Kanan so much! He cares for his family, he loves them and because he loves them he can muster the Force enough to save them. I definitely think that if Kanan hadn't loved Hera and the crew, he wouldn't have been able to save them from the explosion that took his life.

There is something which in a sense shocked me about Kanan. It's his sacrifice. Before to go to rescue Hera and enventually die, i remember he cut his hair. On the moment, i didn't pay attention to this but after his death, i thought that, before rescuing Hera, he already knew he was going to die. Of course, he liberated Hera but in his mind, he knew that his fate was sealed. I have also the impression that, by his sacrifice, he wanted to show something to everyone and particularly teach a lesson to Ezra. The raid on Lothal on the factory which produced Tie/D Defender lead by Hera was a complete failure and Kanan quickly understood that only a sacrifice could give a victory for the rebellion. So, he attracted the fire from the imperial on him and by killing him, the imperial completely destroyed the factory. This sacrifice, anybody who have enough bravery and sense of duty could do it, but this is precisely what a jedi can do if he must do it. Only sacrifice could give victory to the rebellion. Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor and all the rogue 1 squadron knew they could die at Scarif but, even if they had a bad feeling about this, they hoped to survive until the moment there was no hope. Of course, they were ready to do it if necessary. But in the case of Kanan, he knew he had no hope at all to survive. By doing what he has done, he showed a great lesson that Ezra learned absolutely very well. At the end of Rebels, he has done the same thing that his master : sacrifice voluntarily himself to offer victory to the rebellion. That's really very impressive. The more i think about the idea of voluntary sacrifice (not like a coward who blows up himself in the middle of a crowd), the more i think it's like a combined act of faith, of great courage and love. For me, that's what Kanan did and this is why he is a great jedi.

If you think about it Kanan actually could be a force ghost. Or at least meets the requirements. Hear me out: To become a spirit a Jedi has to know their true self accept it and let go. Another big part is sacrifice. Kanan seems to do all these things. Recognizing his original name, coming to terms with his past demons, moving forward, sacrificing himself for his friends. Not to mention the way his sight was restored and his “presence” lingered, like something special was going on with him. And we know he meditated a lot, talked with Yoda at least once, and we didn’t see all his missions. It’s possible that he earned the ability to become a spirit and we just didn’t see it.

Kanan is one of the best characters of the franchise and serves as a great example of what a Jedi should be. He is also one of the best examples of the differences between the Jedi pre and post fall of the Order. The Jedi before the fall were all held down with dogma, bureaucracy, moral and political compromises. After the fall those Jedi that survived really went back to the basics of being Jedi. No more dogmatic council or rigid code, it was just them and the force and finding there own balance. To me this is why so many of the Jedi from after the fall of the Jedi Order are better at being true Jedi then those from before the fall were.

Not only did Kanan sacrifice himself at the last moment, he went on the mission trusting in the force (and Ezra's ability to determine the will of the force) beforehand, knowing that is how it would end. It is one thing to jump in front of a bus to save a child, it is another to allow all of the events to play out and then jump in front of the bus because the entire chain of events was the right thing for Lothal and the galaxy. The is no better death in SW. Chirrut comes close, but not quite there.

@Vemberain
@Vemberain 3 жыл бұрын
Kanan figured out what it means to be a Jedi on his own. Sure, he had 14 years of training, but compassion and sacrifice aren't taught, at least not directly. I love how he progresses from a curious learner, to padawan soldier, to rogue, to lady's man/drifter, and then devoted partner, family man, Jedi Knight, and finally to trusting the bigger picture of rebellion, hope, and the Force. He went from not wanting to be called "kid" to growing up real fast with Order 66. He's seen the down-and-dirty, lived a rough life, and learned to use his abilities for good. In my first watch-through of Rebels, I thought he relented on his distrust of clones too quickly. I've seen PTSD (I work with lots of disabled vets) and it's not that easy to forget or forgive. Since I knew he was an Order 66 survivor, his master sacrificed herself to save him, and can imagine the horrors of being a 14-year-old hunted down by the troops who were your buddies, I felt like his friendship with Rex came too swiftly. I finally realized that I didn't agree with his decision to trust the clones again "so easily" was because of my own bias, and that Kanan working through that as well as he did showed he'd handled the situation better than I would have. Like he said in one of the comics, the Jedi Order taught him all sorts of things like fighting, politics, mediation, etc, but not "how to live". It took him some time, but by the end of the show I think he was the perfect balance between compassionate and Force-trusting Jedi and someone who knew how to live and pass on knowledge with a family. He's my favourite Star Wars character. Add me to the list of those who gave him an A.
@Vemberain
@Vemberain 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't want my reply to be too long, but can we also talk about how he never seemed to have had an issue with the Dark Side? In one of the comics he mentions understanding how easy it would be to sink into his hatred when he sees his friend Stance get killed - but that he knows that's not the right path, and within seconds he's mastered what other Jedi struggled with for years.

....aaaand (did I mention I'm a fan?) I love the theory that he was born on Lothal. The hieroglyphs in the caves with the Loth-wolf episodes seem to show people following wolves, and Ki-Adi-Mundi, Yoda, and other Jedi taking an infant. It's as if his destiny was pre-written, and he returned to Lothal, where he and Lothal-native Ezra relocated the Jedi Temple there, and where he was knighted. His sacrifice saved the environment from the resource draining imperial factories, and led to Ezra's band of allies kicking the Empire off the planet. It makes sense on a world with a door to the World Between Worlds that someone might have seen the future and put it into pictograph form as a prophecy. Just sayin'

Have you thought about color-coding the characters in your lists at the beginning with the sources of canon they appear in (original trilogy, prequels, sequels, TV & Star Wars Stories, other canon only, Legends only, for instance)?

I gave him a high B. I believe in a more adult focused show with him and Hera as the primary characters he would have been an easy A but there were too many moments where he wasn't allowed to display his full potential as a character.

This is my answer just on the title (not having watched the vid), YES!!! In the absence of the Jedi Order, with an apprentice of his own, and having been in the presence of the Bindu, Kanaan path leads him to listening to the force, (kinda like Rey). One example as to the evidence of this path is his statement to Herra regarding Lothal that they always end up back there. No matter where they travel they kept ending up there. And we know the reason why. So yes, as Ahsoka told Ezra in WBW, he found what he needed to do and he did it. (Very rough translation.) Now I will watch the vid. :)

The separatists were actually like the Jedi after the war. They lost the war too and probably learned of all the war crimes seeing how flawed their movement was. Kleeve the sep General from the Kanan comic puts the best description of the CIS: „As a separatist I thought for freedom but put my trust into a corrupt leadership“

If they'd gone a different animation style (upgraded) I think Kanan would score better. I gave him a B, but listening to others comments, I would agree, I do like Kanan more than a B, and I think I based it on the fact that I didnt pay attention as closesly to Rebels b/c of the style as I did to say the late style of CW. His death was one of the few that I gulped on and felt sadness on as a viewer. So he obviously meant more than I gave him credit for.

Hello there! Thor I have a suggestion - when you come across a long comment and suggest that we pause and read it I think it would be better if you read it out loud for us. For one it is somehow pleasant hearing it the way you speak but also when I am listening to KZfaq videos I am mostly doing something else on the side so I am not in a position to stop doing that and go to pause the video to read. If the reason for you not reading it is to make the video less boring (if that is possible for your subscribers to be) you can put the time stamp on it so those who are here just for the sake of recreation can skip to the point after the long comment. Ha sorry for the longer comment, but it seemed as something worth mentioning. May the Force be with you.

I feel like a lot of the Fs and Ds are coming from people that won't give ANYTHING in canon a chance (first or second). The only way you could rate Kanan below a C is if you hadn't actually seen him. As for the criticism of Rebels being lesser because it was a kids show: The Clone Wars was a kids show, and it's probably a lot of people's favorite Star Wars in the last twenty years (bar mando). Rebel's issue is that it was overspecialized towards kids, which can be hard to right without... well, all the issues Rebels ran into face-first.

Kanan Jarus was a Bad@$$ in terms of Jedi... He survived Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Thrawn, and made the Empire look a fool countless times. As a part of the Ghost Crew, he gave the Rebellion it's first breath. Even after losing his Sight, he relearned the Force to learn to see, and became a better swordsman. And he had one of the BEST Deaths in Star Wars History... Mad Respect to Kanan

In my eyes if Obi Wan was still a padawan in his mid 20s, Kanan was still a padawan until season 3 or 4. I still love almost all main Star Wars characters (that business in the Sequels doesn't doesn't count) & I love most of the Rebels show, I even appreciate season 1. Kanan by the time of his ssn 4 sacrifice was a true Jedi & I look forward to more Filoni shows in the future.

Especially because of the prequels jedi were starting to feel a lot like monks even tho jedi were always meant to be more of a samurai. Thats why i like characters like luke and kanan so much. They make mistakes and also fall in love. They are in my opinion the only jedi that actually feel like a real person and not just a thing which is just medetating and sometimes fighting.

Now this question is interesting. There are so many on youtube that are just absurd, but this one deserves some thought. Given the millions of Star Wars fans around the world, opinions on what Jedi should, could be, or have been in the Star Wars universe obviously will vary, and many can get lost in the weeds with why this, and why that....blah, blah, blah. George Lucas clearly had in mind that Obiwan was a very special Jedi. Throughout the saga, he seemed to be the most consistently grounded in his approach as a Jedi. Of course, he did have his time where he no longer believed in himself, due to the tragedies around him. With that being said, I wonder what Kanan could have become, if there was no Order 66. He is perhaps the most intriguing character in Rebels (yes, I know he is pretty much the main character, and without him, Rebels wouldnt have been that good), but he could have been way more valuable to the larger Saga, not just Rebels. What I wonder though, is what the writers will do with Ezra. Since he is officially Kanans padawan, it would be a real tragedy (and pointless for the writers to have developed such a good character), to not do something significant with him (and not just kill him off, like so many other great characters, i.e. Rouge 1)

Redo Fives as well as Boba Fett please, having him so high up there is scandalous still! For shame this community, for shame! :D Wasn't fond of Kanan at all when I first came across him; he didn't seem at all Jedi-like to me and he wasn't helped by having Prinze, Jr. as a voice actor, who I never liked. However, on his journey, I began to understand him, the things he'd already been through, and the struggles he was dealing with, and being inexperienced in the Jedi ways. This path that he and Ezra ended up being on together, became like a father and son relationship and was very sweet; and as the series went on, he felt far more like a Jedi Knight to me than the likes of Mace feckin' Windu. He matured and by the time of his death (and force echo with the wolf), I really liked him. His death is still one of the most emotional things I've seen in Star Wars, as much as when Anakin comes back to the light at the end of Jedi; and both get me every single time, as it does when Ezra a few episodes later says 'goodbye Kanan'; which for me not only cemented those characters as Star Wars faves, but turned Rebels into my favourite SW animation. Got round to some comic material of Kanan too recently, and have an audiobook there to find out how Kanan and Hera meet which I look forward to getting around to also. Such a turnaround for me, for a character I didn't like at all to begin with.

I’ve never been a fan of the “Will of the Force” thing, at last as far as controlling who wins and loses, etc... Luke Skywalker saves the Rebellion, becomes a Jedi, redeems his father, and helps defeat the Sith because of the choices he makes, not because the Force thought that’d make for a cool script.

If Luke (and Vader/Anakin) had died in Ep VI, another powerful Force-Sensitive would have eventually taken their place to slay The Emperor. In a universe such as Star Wars, nothing can last forever and change can come naturally or chaotically depending on the nature of The Force in general.
