Kanan Jarrus from Star Wars: Rebels is one of my favorite characters in the franchise. Kanan Jarrus along with other members of the Ghost Crew such as Ezra Bridger, Hera Syndulla, Zeb, Sabine Wren, and chopper are all great. As a fan of Star Wars Rebels, I wanted to talk about Kanan Jarrus and why I think he's great. In this video, I talk about why Kanan Jarrus is a true Jedi (Star Wars Rebels video essay)

Kanan’s story ultimately revolves not around his abilities, but around his insecurities. Kanan begins season 1 as a survivor. He was one of the few Jedi who survived Order 66, and since then all he has done is focus on surviving. Yeah he and the ghost crew would sporadically attack the empire, but he never committed himself to something larger. This is something we see in season 2 when he is reluctant to join the rebellion. The name Kanan comes from the biblical Canaanites, a group of people who were wiped out, but later it was revealed that there were a few survivors, sound familiar? Ezra’s entrance into the ghost crew is a physical representation of Kanan’s insecurities. Kanan doesn’t think he can properly train Ezra. He never completed his own Jedi training, how could he possibly teach Ezra. For the first time, he is taking on more responsibility than himself. If Ezra dies or fails as a Jedi, then Kanan’s insecurities would be proven correct. He feels inadequate, and throughout the first season we are shown this. When they get word that Jedi master Luminara is alive, Kanan hopes to find her so she can train Ezra instead of himself. This frustrates Ezra, as he feels he is being dumped by Kanan. Throughout the first season, Kanan is giving into his fear. Fear that he isn’t good enough and fear that he can’t train Ezra. When the Grand Inquisitor arrives, he further feeds Kanan’s insecurities. He repeatedly bests Kanan in duels and tells Kanan that he was a coward for running away from his master. But what Kanan does, intentionally or not, is help raise Ezra as a good person before training him to become a Jedi. By the end of the first season, Ezra has a long way to go when it comes to his Jedi training, but he already has made so much progress as a human being. Ezra began the story alone, stealing from people as much as he can. As someone who was on the run for most of his life, Kanan sees this and can empathize with Ezra. He wants to give Ezra the family that Kanan never had when he was his age. By giving Ezra a home and a family to love him, Ezra is able to gain the courage to speak out against the empire. When Kanan is captured, the rest of the ghost crew loses hope. But as Ezra was once given hope by his new family, it is his turn to return the favor. Ezra speaks out against the empire and attempts a rescue mission to save Kanan. During the final duel between the grand inquisitor and Kanan, Kanan is finally able to let go of his fear after a fake out death from Ezra. Kanan renouncing his fear finally allowed him to best the grand inquisitor. For the first time, Kanan was able to trust solely in the force and not let the wrong emotions cloud him. The Jedi of the prequels may have been right about letting fear control you, but where they were wrong is love and compassion is a strength, not a weakness. It is Kanan’s love and compassion for Ezra that allows him to surrender his fears. This is something that Kanan believes more strongly later on. Kanan has taken his first steps in becoming a stronger jedi, but he has a long way to go.

"Attachment" as Word of Lucas defined it was never about not loving people or things, it was always about jealously and possessively holding onto things. Think the difference between Anakin being willing to burn down the galaxy just for the *possibility* of saving Padme from a death that *might* have happened and Ezra giving up the chance to be with his parents again for the sake of the galaxy. It's basically the exact same temptation but because Anakin was "attached" to Padme (i.e. couldn't let go of her, couldn't stop clinging to her, couldn't accept the possibility of losing her) he Fell, whereas Ezra let go, in spite of how much it personally hurt him, and thereby saved everyone.

Kanan proved that attachment is not solely a path to the dark side. Anakin loved selfishly, nothing was too great a cost to sacrifice to cling on to what he loved. Kanan Selflessly loved not clinging to those he loved but just wishing to guide and protect them through his own means, not sacrificing others to do so.

In the documentary about the making of the Mandalorian, Dave Filoni pointed out that in calling the music for the Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan/Maul fight "the Duel of the Fates", it shows that the duel is to determine Anakin's "fate". And when Qui-Gon dies, Anakin's "fate" is sealed. Because Obi-Wan only takes him on as a padewan as an obligation. He later comes to try and relate to him as a brother.

Now that we know Ezra and Sabine are returning for the Ahsoka series, I fully believe Ezra is going to be the one to train Grogu. They already have a connection through Ahsoka, and both Ahsoka and Luke didn’t train Grogu because of his attachments. But Ezra’s whole arc is about his attachments making him a better person and Jedi, as taught by Kanan.

When you talked Kanan and his destiny being on Lothal it immediately reminded that based on the hieroglyphs on the wall during Kindred Spirits, plus Filoni’s and Freddy’s hints. Kanan was actually born on Lothal, but was taken by the Jedi shortly after that. Which only further deepens his and Ezra’s outstanding bonded then it already was. Knowing that the reason _why_ Kanan kept coming back to Lothal not only because of Ezra, not only because of Hera but also because that too is his home even if he never realized it. Adding on, something I feel a lot of people don’t talk about is when Kanan is about to die and he’s given his eye sight back he not only sees Hera, but he also sees Ezra. Hera and Ezra are both within the same frame as they watch him make this sacrifice, meaning that Kanan is seeing them both. His wife and his surrogate son, the two most important people in this life, one last time. One of the devs plus Filoni explained the reason why Kanan gained his sight back and that was simply _Clarity_ Kanan is at more one with the Force when he’s holding back that explosion then he’s ever been before. He’s sacrificing himself for his family and the Force gives him back his sight. As a gift. Kanan is just such an outstanding and amazing character and I will forever mourn his death. 😭🥺

@@emeraldcity789 on the scene when the Bendu gets angry at Kanan and says to him "perhaps it was the will of the force that the jedi be destroyed" that really stuck in my mind. The prequel jedi were caught up in their dogmatic views and hubris that they had essentially abandoned what the jedi were supposed to be. And whenever there were jedi who spoke out on this they either died like Qui Gon, cast out like Ahsoka, or fell to the dark side like Count Dooku and Anakin.

Canaan's death was the most powerful and heartbre ak scene I have ever seen in Star Wars. It hits me so hard I cry every time I watch. According to Canon he was born on coruscant but he was definitely a surrogate father to Ezra. And his journey from Padawan in exile to loving master sacrificing himself for his family and the people of Lothal Make him more of a complete Jedi night than any we've seen on screen. And that includes Luke Skywalker, mostly because his character was ruined by Rion Johnson in TLJ.

@@JenniferKokoski actually it’s implied by Freddie and the hieroglyphs on the wall that Kanan was born on Lothal, but he was raised on Coruscant. It’s why the Loth Wolves connect with him so much not only cuz of the Wolf Dume but also cuz he’s connected to the planet in the same way as Ezra is. It’s also why he always kept on coming back to Lothal, he was drawn to it cuz he was born there. It also explained why Ezra and Kanan formed such a strong connection to one another compared to other traditional Jedi and Padawans, not only did the Force bring them together but also cuz they are from the same planet so that makes their connection even stronger.

The more moving scene was episodes before when he confessed wishing he could see her. She removes his blinders and tells him lovingly that he's always been able to see her. I didn't catch Canaan getting his eyesight back on my original watch. I was crying too much at the time. I think it's pretty clear that the force gives him back his sight. It's a gift to a very special Jedi knight he be able to see his family one One last time before he leaves them. (Not that I believe the Star Wars lore that when one dies their spirit disappears. That's just nonsense. Life never really dies. It just transcends. As we saw when Kanan appeared as the loth wolf. I hope we see his spirit someday watching over or interacting with his son. A great reminder that Hera had this beautiful love at one time in a state of war and from that came a family.)

@yusukeurameshi7744 4 ай бұрын
I agree. I think when he decided to sacrifice himself to save his loved ones that he put all his faith and trust in the force that with it he would be able to save them. By doing that he became more entuned with the force than ever before and that brought clarity and understanding that through the force all the things that he once thought where impossible or maybe out of reach for him were actually well within his power. That allowed him to wield the force with such mastery to simultaneously put up a force field, slow down the time for the explosion, force grab Hera to stop her, then force push her onto the ship, force heal his own eyes so he could see his loved ones one last time, then finally doing a massive force push on the entire ship to launch it out of the blast range. This is a HUGE feat cuz usually a force user has to fully concentrate to use one force power and we've never seen anyone do so many different things with the force at one time!

In stuffing down their emotions, and refusing any attachment, the Jedi showed how controlled by the very thing they were trying to run from, being fear. Kanan is not a Jedi because he has chosen this as well, but because he has made the harder choice; to recognize the inevitable truth that we all fear, love, and attach. He doesn't run from it. He recognizes, and rises above it. And ironically, his love for those around him, the thing so often cried out against by the order, is what made him such a great Jedi.
@blanktrigger8863
@blanktrigger8863 Жыл бұрын
That's a caricature. The Jedi aren't anti-emotion and attachment isn't a necessary part of emotion. For example, love without attachment (which is possession) was always a known possibility. Further, fear is a proper biological response to danger. Proper biological responses don't control, so the Jedi can't be controlled by a fear of attachments. The fear that leads to the dark side is fabricated fear.

Kanan was so perfect because he was so flawed. He did face so much fear and even ran from it for awhile (something myself and most people can relate to). Had he lived, Kanan would have been a perfect choice for the new Grandmaster of the Order. He slew the Grand Inquisitor, has Yoda's approval, has already mentored one Jedi to Knighthood in Ezra, Ahsoka liked him, he had a family and lived amongst the regular people of the galaxy, and was part of the early era of the Rebellion. And had Luke shown up and met him, Luke would have latched onto Kanan and been trained by him very quickly. And Jacen would have grown up with his father in his life. No one else would have had his resume and street cred. Now, no one else does. Luke's training was more limited than Ezra's or Kanan's. Ahsoka quit when she was a student. K'kruhk or Kestis were not a part of the Rebellion so far as we know. Are they going to wake up Ood Banar and have him run the show? Are they bringing K'kruhk or Ood Banar back into canon? The Jedi, as of Feloniverse canon, are poised for a Sectarian crisis. Ahsoka is ironically the new Orthodox wing but Ezra and Luke are the new Reformed one.

(I have seen all the movies and TV shows. I have not read any books except A New Dawn and I'm not a gamer.) Kanan's growth and development over the seasons was incredible! I agree that he does embody the best of what the Jedi should be. Not because he is the strongest with the Force nor because he is the best lightsaber duelist but because he was selfless and he identified and overcame his fears w/o becoming arrogant, detached or judgmental. And yes, his death was overwhelmingly tragic.

I just discovered Star Wars rebels this summer. The relationship between all the characters is reminiscent of the original trilogy. I remember being a little kid and watching princess Leia, Farmer Luke and Pirate Han Solo battle the evil empire in a space fairy tale and being completely enamored. The character of Kanaan jarus is my favorite of the Jedis. When Lucas released the prequel trilogy and the Jedi Order had this stupid rule against forming attachments I knew it was bullshit. No way could anyone maintain and balance with their own emotions if they weren't allowed to feel. I loved how kanan and Hera were the mom and dad of the ghost crew. Their last scenes together before he died were filled with so much love and hope for the future. When Kane and dies it broke me. I've never felt so much pain at a Star Wars death. I literally cried. Now I've enjoyed Star Wars all my life. Return of the Jedi was my favorite of all the movies cuz of those last battles. How good finally triumphs over evil. Love and friendship are more powerful than the force.

There is enough reason to believe that Obi Ean knew that Anakin was in a relationship with Padme. In season 7, he overhears a conversation that the two are hearing where they express their love for one another and all Obi Wan says is 'tell Padme I said hi'. Anakin gives him a look and then they walk away from each other. I would personally lump Obi Wan with the surviving Jedi, as he isn't as Orthodox as his colleagues within the order.
@porbenjamas
@porbenjamas Жыл бұрын
Obi-Wan knew. Its written in the book Revenge of the Sith novelization. ----------------- “Senator--Padmé. Please.” He gazed into her eyes with nothing on his face but compassion and fatigued anxiety. “I am not blind, Padmé. Though I have tried to be, for Anakin’s sake. And for yours.” “What do you mean?” “Neither of you is very good at hiding feelings, either.” “Obi-Wan--” “Anakin has loved you since the day you met, in that horrible junk shop on Tatooine. He’s never even tried to hide it, though we do not speak of it. We . . . pretend that I don’t know. And I was happy to, because it made him happy. You made him happy, when nothing else ever truly could.” He sighed, his brows drawing together. “And you, Padmé, skilled as you are on the Senate floor, cannot hide the light that comes to your eyes when anyone so much as mentions his name.”

It was Palpatine's manipulation of Anakin's emotions and his perspective on them that drove him to the Dark Side. It's amazing how people always gloss over this when discussing the falling out between Anakin and the Jedi Order. Anakin's love saved him and kept him on the up and up, for the most part. Obi-Wan admits as much in the RotS novelization. It was the attachment, possessiveness and jealousy that came with that love, tugged by Palpatine, that doomed him, the Jedi and the Republic. As Anakin said, the Jedi are encouraged to observe their love for others through the practice of compassion. Kanan is a textbook example of this, not an outlier or revolutionary.

Not enough people talk about how perfect Kanan's knighting scene is. Go back and rewatch it, once you know whats happening it all takes on a double meaning. Kanan fights "Is this the limit of your knowledge?" "I learned enough!" "I think not". Kanan reaches for a second sabre - its red, and the fight becomes more difficult as more guards show up. Kanan STOPS fighting, accepts he has done the best he can and is knighted. Something disney gets right consistently I think are what I term 'Peak Jedi' moments, which almost always involve the jedi putting aside their weapons, because you don't reach Peak jedi by hitting something with a glowing stick as hard as you can.

I love Kanan's Zen Buddhist decision to "set the blade down". He lived a life where he was able to experience the complete spectrum of human experiences, gain a deep understanding of the universal nature of fear, and transcends them. My favorite quality of Kanan is how he still chooses to raises and encourages Ezra to be kind and compassionate despite both of them understanding the reality of living in a cruel world. It reminds me of the inscription tomb of the ultimate swordman, Dugi Qiubai, in the classic "Return of the Condor Heroes": - The first sword (present): "My first sword was so sharp, strong and fierce that none could withstand it. With it in hand, I strive for mastery by challenging all the heroes of the Northern Plains in my teenage years." - The second sword (not present, represented by a wooden tablet): "My second sword was violet in hue and flexible in motion. I used it in my 20s. With it, I have mistakenly wounded righteous men. It turned out to be a weapon of doom that caused me to feel remorse endlessly. I cast it into a deep canyon." - The third sword (present)"My third sword was heavy and blunt. The uttermost cunning is based on simplicity. With it, I roamed all lands under Heaven unopposed in my 30s." - The fourth sword (represented by a wooden sword): "After the age of 40, I was no longer hampered by any weapon. Grass, trees, bamboos and rocks can all be my swords. Since then, I have developed my skills further, such that gradually I can win battles without reaching for weapons." There's a similar scene at the end of Hero where the Qin King gazes at the calligraphy and realizes the height of swordsmanship: (Qin King to Nameless): "I have just come to a realization! This scroll by Broken Sword contains to secret to his swordsmanship. What it reveals is his highest ideal." "In the first stage, man and sword become one. Here, even a blade of grass can become a lethal weapon." "In the next stage, the sword resides not in the hand, but in the heart. Even without a weapon, a warrior can slay his enemy from a hundred paces!" "But...the ultimate ideal is when the sword disappears altogether. The warrior embraces all around him." "The desire to kill no longer exists. Only peace remains."

Can we PLEASE keep getting these kinda vids? Looking at characters (especially those that are not mainstream) and analyzing their overall importance and journey? Like Rex, Cal (once we get the next game I guess), The Bad Batch (either as a crew or each individual, also once we get more content from them) and just even more. I’d also love to hear your ideas for what Rey does post TRoS. How she goes about the Jedi life, if she seeks out anyone to help her along her way, if she even wants to attempt building her own order or if she wants to adopt something like the rule of two where she takes on an apprentice after traveling and helping out across the galaxy, then travel around and help out together and train the apprentice to adopt her traveling heroic path and let the cycle live on. I only just now, while typing this comment in fact, came up with this possible lifestyle but I think the cycle would look like this: 1 Jedi travels the galaxy and helps out by doing good, the Jedi will eventually find a force sensitive individual to train in their ways of the traveling Jedi, they spend the rest of their life helping the galaxy as a pair, and when the master passes on to the force then the apprentice becomes the master and they repeat the cycle. Now I can easily see how this could end in the Sith returning if the apprentice turns out to be too involved in the path to the Darkside but I think the writers of such a story could write up a way that prevents this, like perhaps the master must search far and wide for the most pure force sensitive, and maybe they have many ways to test this purity and maybe even have it where the master seeks out their equal in the force, they must make a dyad in order to adopt the apprentice so that they are connected on a deeper level than just friendship. Maybe the dyad connection will keep the cycle pure. Thoughts, anyone?

Ive battled some demons lately and I watched Star Wars Rebels from the beginning. I saw the episode where Kanan and Ezra visit the Jedi temple of Lothal for the first time and I cried when they were facing their fears, it resonated so much with me and it was able to release my anxiety and stress. Thank you so much for this video, Kanan is truly the character who I mostly identify. As I'm a young adult concerned with being able to face my fears and protect those who I love. Thanks to Dave and of course, George Lucas for this marvelous universe. Thank you

At first I didn't really like him but man I was so wrong. Rebels is by far the best animated series I've watched and one of the best star wars stories. I hope that the Ashoka series will give us more from the rebels.
