I was super lucky to visit Phi Phi in April last year solo when it was basically empty. Got a taxi boat at 6am to Maya Bay and was the only person out there for a few hours. One of the coolest experiences of my life.

I started watching your channel in the beginning when you still just had a few thousand followers. I always enjoyed the videos, but I somehow got "Lost" (yeah, pun intended, sorry👀) for the past few years, and this Thailand series dropped you back in my algorithm. And, oh boy, I couldn't be more thankful for that, haha. I love seeing how far you and your channel have come, but I'm also just starting to plan my first-ever trip to Thailand...so perfect timing🤗

first time on maya bay for me was 1996. 2 years before the beach movie. at that time there was only wooden bungalows on phiphi and it was a true paradise :)

I was there at that time as well, there were only a few "better" bungalows with aircon, most were very basic and the island was very laid back with a boat a day coming from Phuket with tourists. The island was already considered highly touristic but nothing like the present madness.

Still looks lovely, we stayed in Rayleigh Bay when we went and was wonderful, arguably as good as the islands we visited that you showed to do. Either way. Its an amazing fun trip to do. Thanks for sharing dude. Loving the vlog stylee

Youve nailed Phi Phi with this vid, it's exactly the same sentiment for me. I like it leess each time, and probably wouldn't go again. I like the Beach being closed to boats. I would recommend the Maya Bay Sleep Aboard though, if they're still doing it. Basically the island to yourself.

The Beach is my favorite movie of all time! I got to visit Maya Bay and spent the night there just before it closed down. It's definitely a magical spot. There's also bioluminescent plankton in Maya Bay. It's not as vibrant as in the movie, but it is there, and luckily I got to swim in it.

Thanks for being real, I’ve been in Krabi for a week now (Nov 2022) and the smell is terrible here too. Heading to Phi Phi for the night and was debating on more nights but I need power and wifi so thank you for sharing!

As a Thai, I visited Phi Phi in early 2000. The island was raw. Maya Bay then was stunning. Millions of fish swam near the beach. Then it went down hill with tourism. Good news was the bay was closed for few years before reopening.

Phi Phi was great. We were there in september, went snorkeling at Phi Phi Lee, rented a kayak to go to the actual Monkey Beach (the one you showed is a main tourist stop on the way to Phi Phi Lee and not that nice, especially considering the trafffic). I think the island is really beautiful and worth your time, it has a really nice vibe, beautiful sunsets, really good food (no lack of options, how many options do you really need!?!) and especially with a kayak you can have a bit of an adventure off the beaten path ;)

I visited Phi Phi in 1989 when the only transport was an Ox Cart, you could stay in basic accommodation for $1, the best hotel was 3* ... that was paradise!

Was one of the last lucky people to go to maya bay and be able to camp the night. It was windy so no boats went but ours took us round the back ( where the new pear is) and we had to swim and climb up a rope. So lucky to have not one single boat in the bay ❤️❤️

Lucky I got to visit Koh Phi Phi & Maya Bay in 1999 before the Movie came out. It was nice, just a few long tail boats in Maya Bay on our visit. Will keep those memories. Some places you just can't go back to.

I was in Maya Bay in 2004 way before it was closed due to tourist damage of the corals, beautiful place but 6 weeks later the tsunami hit.

Currently planning a trip for 4 guys to Thailand, we would have about 19 days, what islands would you most recommend for a combination of nightlife, food, and culture (we will spend some time in Chiang Mai and a couple days in Bangkok for NYE's) and want to spend the rest on the islands. The coral was being damaged by the chemicals in sunscreen used by swimmers. That the reason they are not allowing swimming in the bay.

It is still good idea to stay for 2 nights, one full day visiting islands nearby and snorkeling. Taking one day trip from Phuket or Krabi is just too rush.

If you think it's changed now, you should have seen what it was like in 1993, the first time I went there. Nothing but basic bungalows for 50 baht and the power would sometimes go out. A time when it was a true backpacker's stop off the beaten path, but without the Full Moon Party scene. Boy do I miss it.

Thailand has some beautiful beaches and places to stay. I am sure Christian knows most of them. Phi Phi is just not one of them. It would be of course but commercialisation ruins the natural beauty. Great content as always Christian! Seeing the world watching Lost LeBlanc saves me a fortune! Thanks!

I think tourists should stay on places that are developed for tourists. When you constantly seek these "natural" places that have no proper infrastructure, you end up being the problem. You are not special, you are just as tourist as everyone else.

Maya Bay is a million times better now they don't allow boats in to the bay or people to swim. It used to be terrible with boats lining the whole shore and thousands of people.

My first time in Koh Phi Phi was in 2011. I fell in love with it. The people, the parties (girls from all over the world), the atmosphere, the ocean. Since then I came back like 4-5 times and stayed there for a whole month each time, but unfortunately every time I came back it slowly got worse. The last time I was there was right before covid. It was over crowded, smelly piece of magicless commercial Island. The beach is so dirty I can't even believe it's the same place I visited in 2011. Looking for the next Island to settle in for my trips.

May is summer time in Thailand with a small chance of rains. If you're coming for the sun and beaches, May is not a bad idea. However, you could get higher chance of sunny days plus Songkran festival (Thailand's new year) by coming around middle of April (13th-15th to be exact). Expect extreme number of tourists though.

Have you been to El Nido, Palawan? I guess El Nido is way better han Phi Phi Islands, plus the locals speak fluent English. Nothing beats a country with great sceneries and people that speak English fluently even if it's not their first language. Easier to travel and to communicate. El Nido has been voted again as number 1 best island in Asia and Top 5 around the world. And one more thing, the island hopping in El Nido is less than 100 bucks for group of people already. ❤
