Will the lines absorb the water or will there be a different result?
This is an experiment you do not want to miss!!

Love these testing vids. Just as a side, I've been using copolymer mono since '94 and never looked back. Both as a main line and leader (to braid). My bro only started on fluoro as a main line a couple of years ago and has had significantly more breaks. But he still swears by it and that's cool. Just wet that dang knot. 😄 I might consider fluoro as a leader one day, but it just ain't as economical or logical for the rocky environments I regularly fish in. Appreciate this guys.

I think the mono can stretch more and is able to absorb some of the movement from the abrasive surface, where as a stiff fluoro suffers more structural damage. Water may make the mono even more elastic.

I would say these should be done under water. Just put that contraption in a pool and redo it. A fish is in water so it would be more accurate if the test was conducted under water.

And mono with the same diameter as flouro is more manageable and not as stiff. I'd like to see you do some test with different brands of mono or copoly matching the same diameters to see which brands are best at knot strength. Forget what the label rates the poundage test. I have a good idea which will win or be in the top 2 brands.

Not sure if you have accurate enough stuff to measure it, but would be interesting to see if mono actually swells and actually gets thicker after being soaked in water. Also if the swelling makes 20 lb mono look equivalent to say 30 pound flourocarbon underwater.

Thanks Luke, great video. I always believed mono to be the better choice for leader line for strength and abrasion resistance. I also prefer the way it feels. I have heard that it stretches more than flouro though. Have you tested this? If so do you think it has any negative impact on hookup ratios?

to minimize the stretch, use the strong/thin hook, braid and a fast rod. i think that a mono leader, on a braid main line, power and fast rod, the stretching is good, too absorb a hard hookups

You've got my attention on the abrasion testing, although fluorocarbon makers still hype its abrasion superiority. Other comparisons I would love to see evaluated are (1) underwater visibility, and (2) buoyancy. Every visibility comparison between the two I've seen is always in crystal clear water. How much of an advantage does fluoro have when water clarity begins to diminish? Most of us don't fish extremely clear water. Does visibility really matter? Before fluoro, we were catching bass on mono. It is misleading to suggest that mono floats. It's just sinks slower than fluoro. Again, I don't know how much of a factor that really is, especially at the shallower depths wherein most fish for bass. How much time does it take the two to sink at varying depths from 1 to 10 feet?

I think the best way to prove that mono has better abrasion is to set up a rig like that inside a tank with saltwater. That would be a more realistic scenario. Either way I'm sticking with mono, thanks for the tests!

Non-soaked mono is more abrasive, could the water provide lubrication? Also, when the line rubs against the sandpaper, it fills in the roughness of the sandpaper with abraided line. A fresh piece of sandpaper may provide consistent results.

Shouldn’t you test abrasion under water? This would be important because I bet your test is heating up the line to break it. If it was under water it doesn’t heat up the same way. I think you are getting the wrong results. I do a lot of bait fishing for tuna and the big boys can break you off at the gills after a long fight. I’m not sure I would call this abrasion so much as ‘pinching’ of the line. The leader gets like flattened out. Flourocarbon leader performs significantly better in my non scientific tests.
