Marsh Man Masson went back to his neighborhood pool to compare and contrast the visibility of monofilament, fluorocarbon and braided fishing lines. This is probably the most important pool test yet!

The one thing about this is the ultra-clear water. When you fish off color water, well it will make the line, no matter what you use, very hard for any fish to see. The clearer the water yes for sure.

I use fluoro leaders on my braid but having said that I still think fish can still see fluoro. If even the little bit of fluoro we can see with our eyes underwater you know fish can see it also. They have obviously much better vision than us. Braid is just straight out obnoxiously visible. I think the braid scares fish away much less than fluoro. And not only that I am sure fish can sense the vibration in the water from the lihe. However if they are hungry they will eat the bait anyway. They are not sophisticated creatures. The real test lies in bow many fish actually turn away from our baits. We have way of knowing as we cannot see how many fish have looked at our lures and turned away underwater.

Thanks again for the video. Another reason I like the braid/fluorocarbon combo is that with a high vis color of braid, I can easily see the line at the surface but the fish can't see my line at the lure. Seeing the surface line well opens up the very productive world of slack line fishing.

Todd this is great information! After you illustrated that alternative termination knot (not blood knot), I tied one on after failing to get it right several times. If you could please show that agin, I would appreciate it. I have 14# flouro leader on 15# braid on my light bass spinning outfit. For popping corks and tight lining, I prefer mono or Vanish flouro (no leader). I dare not put braid on any baitcaster, as I am subject to birds nests and cannot afford to set that rod in the holder if I ball up! Ha. I only use the braid on my worm rod for bass. I'm still a big fan of mono for the most part, but have dabbled with straight mono on baitcasters when there actually used to be trout in Lake P.

Many will laugh, but I grew up way before braid was an issue (Saltwater Surf). I used monofilament. Andy, Berkley, and Stren led the way. Well, Andy was always the popular surf line, Berkly the popular rig trying line, and Stren for Fluking. So my limited assessment, Andy is great for the beach, Stren Brown was great for the jetties/rocks, and Berkley is still great for shock leader. I have recently become a braid user for surf casting, but that is it. It's great for distance and cutting wind, but the fact that it has no give is equally a problem in some key situations. Circle hooks no longer require superpower upon hook set. But sometimes freeing from structure or other obstacles, having a little stretch helps. It's not just the viz, it's also the function. Just an FYI, from an old sea dog. Thx 4 the Vid it is very informative.

I’m also a huge braid fan! I used to tie straight braid until last year when I lost my PB trout 30+ inches right at the kayak. Using braid straight to the jerk bait cost me no stretch in the line which caused the hooks to do all the stretching and snap! 15-20 Fluor leader is on every rod now!

Cajun Kahuna Outdoors good to know. I been doing the same for years. Straight braid to lure. And today just got a reel spooled with straight fluro. See how that works. Don’t really have 10+pound fish here but if I ever hook one I wanna make sure he gets in the kayak. What connection knot do you use. Braid to fluro?

What I now wonder is does visibility really make a difference depending on the retrieval speed? If I’m finesse fishing for smallies in a crystal clear creek, I definitely want a very light fuoro. But fishing a clear ocean for false albies or mackerel, when both the fish and lure are moving extremely fast? I still have my doubts it matters as much.

@Six_Gorillion
@Six_Gorillion Жыл бұрын
Exactly this. The fish really don't care about some rope attached to stuff that looks like something they might wanna eat. They literally have no reason to be put off by it. Think about it. Any fish you catch has been caught before and thrown back no harm to em. So they really have no reason to avoid taking a chance at your lure whatever is attached to it. The fish that got taken home and ate, well they ain't got no chance to be afraid of a rope no more, do they?

With a light backdrop like your pool floor, of course dark braid is visible. People use white braid when fishing clear surf because it blends in to the Sandy backdrop. If you were filming with a muddy lake bottom backdrop, dark braid would be very hard to see. I don't think lots of people viewing this will be fishing out of their cement pond...

I use fluorocarbon leaders, but to be honest, I didn’t see enough difference between mono and fluoro to justify the difference in price. I might switch to mono and see if there is a difference in the way the fish behave. When they bite they are close enough to see the line no matter what you use. Good video. Changed my mind at least.

Fluoro is what I use no matter what. I've hated braid and mono. I started using fluoro when it first really started making waves and noticed that my catch increased astronomically. Using the same set up back then really helped me key in to how well fluoro actually was but let me also say that cheap fluoro while people think that it's all the same I'm gonna hard disagree. It's not. I live seagur red label for fishing for fun because I'm in recovery and line cost effects me. Bps I heard used seagur and I can't tell a difference in the two. 15 to 20 lb is perfect and anyone who wants there line to offer more breakage lbs than it's rated is just overpriced l inexperienced. I guess if you only buy cheap stuff it's ok but I've never had one instance of even low lbs/gauge braid breaking ever. Line tests are your friend, not your enemy. Especially if your like me and save every damn thing you have towards fishing. I'm skipping meals at this point so I can fish but who cares. Bass fishing is my passion in life and so long as I eat 2k calories a day I'm good. I can stand to lose weight 😆💓. Your test proved everything I've known for years. I've had so many arguments by inexperienced people who use braid for everything. Braid does have its uses but it's not the Swiss army knife of fishing... Fluoro is.

Good grief. We have spinnerbaits made of metal and look like nothing in nature, huge sinkers and beads, lures with three sets of treble hooks hanging off of it and a giant plastic tongue sticking out front of it....and dont even get me started on fly fishing....but we're supposed to worry about whether fish can spot our fishing line?? lol! For all we know, even if fish spot the line, they likely interpret it as part of the environment, like a strand of weed or something. Secondly, most fish either have poor eyesight (catfish, carp) or ambush predators that strike on reflex (bass, pike, trout), or hide in cover or live in murky water where line visibility is a none issue anyway.

I think line matters much less on unpressured fish and reaction baits. On reaction baits, it normally doesn't look that much like a fish in the first place, so to go with really light, clear line is overkill I think. But with finesse fishing where you're trying to get the bait to look as realistic as possible and the fish is getting a good look at it, I think line does matter. Just my experience
