The 35-year-old has won seven Ballons d'Or, four Champions Leagues, one Copa America, 10 La Liga titles with Barcelona and a Ligue 1 crown in France with Paris St-Germain.
But now, after playing in five tournaments - the first in 2005 - the Argentina captain has added the World Cup to his collection.

He was the greatest before winning and naturally he is the greatest after winning. The most complete player ever, the heartbeat of every team he plays at. The epitomy of the quote: “A talent hits a target no one else can hit; A Genius hits a target no one else can see". Movement and dribbling akin to art, passing that seems to defy reality and the most prolific goalscorer the game has ever seen. Everyone who knows football can instantly see why Messi is the most special talent ever. People are coming to back up all these claims with stats and statswise he is the greatest as well, but it is truly unnecessary, just watch him. Watch as he makes impossible passes multiple times per game. . Watch as he dribbles through players like they are not there even at 35. Watch as he dictates every facet of the game, the tempo, the creation, the scoring. Watch as he scores goals so special that they make millions of hearts beat in the same rythm. Messi is football at the purest form, effortless, fluid and fun. And for people who have played the sport , it is downright insane that he seems to solve any problem that football can throw at him with the most effective and efficient way possible, and at times with ways that he and only he can see. What a special special player.We are lucky to have witnessed him.

Pele wasnt the best Brazilian player in any of the WC he played and by that logic he cant possibly be a goat. Sure he was influencial but there were others that carried more than him. A great example of this was the 1962WC where he only played 2 games but Brazil still won the WC. In 1970 WC he wasnt even their best assist maker or goal scorer for Brazil, didnt even win best player for tourney. His best WC run by far was his first WC win 1958 where he was Brazil's leading goal scorer but still not their best player xD. I honestly dont understand nor do i see why people call him a goat when he wasnt even the best player in those Brazilian squads. It seems like its just !a case of preferance to me people are just defending their heros and villifying anyone who is better than them.

Performance of the ages from Mbappe? He strolled along for 75 minutes doing nothing before scoring a great goal and two pens, the first of which he was rather lucky to get in. Meanwhile, Messi was involved defensively and offensively through most of the match while still scoring two and doing a signature pass in the third, at the age of 35. GOAT!

What distinguishes Messi from Pele and Maradona, is that Messi has been the best for almost 20 years. Pele never played in "real" leagues (I am sorry but the Brasilian league and MLS in the 1960s and 70s is no La Liga) and Maradona was the best for at most 5 years. You may argue who among these 3 reached the higher highs, but Messi has been the best at what he does for the longest time

So Messi wins one World Cup and that makes him immortal! He's the best of his generation, of course (for now...I think Mbappe will better that). Pele played at a time when balls were heavier, pitches were awful, no protection from referees and no media to watch other players and learn from, yet he still innovated and became the greatest ambassador the sport could ever dream of. Unfortunately, the biased Eurocentric view would be that Messi is the greatest ever, even though Pele's achievements outweigh Messi's. Even when Ronaldinho (who in my opinion is the most technically and creatively gifted player I have ever seen) was pulling up trees, the Western media would play down Ronaldinho's majesty! It's the "great white hope" fallacy that plagues most Europeans...it's so sad to witness. It's the same where Lewis Hamilton is concerned...people cannot accept that he eclipses Michael Schumacher for these same reasons! Nobody will match Pele's achievements, at least not in my lifetime!

Well, Pelé CREATED the Brazilian football legacy singlehandedly with 3 world cups. Maradona took a Napoli team full of bums and had them triumph over Platini's Juve and Van Basten's (among others) Milan. Did Messi do that? Not saying Messi's not the goat since that's a favorites debate, but for you to dismiss that and to downplay Maradona and Pelé? That's just dumb.

The truth is, it was never a debate. He didn't need a world cup in my personal opinion. others may say otherwise but in my personal opinion, he didn't need it. This was just that mic drop moment more than anything. Not taking anything From CR7 because he still is one of the greatest to ever do it but for me, Messi has always been the man.

The best footballer of the last 15-20 years in terms of talent/skill/accolades. The Greatest title will always be transcending across generations based on opinion, bias, preference, favorite player, nationalism. Great players before (Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, Best, Bergkamp, Zidane, R9 etc) Great players up until now (Messi, CR7, Zlatan, Neymar, suarez etc) and Great players for the future (Mbappe, Haaland, Musiala, Bellingham etc) I believe in a team sport with 11 players, it is essential to look at all positions. All areas have had legends and greats. Gk= Buffon, Cesar, Khan, Dida, Casillas, Neur, Cech, Courtouis, Valdez Defense= Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro (ballon d'or), puyol, R. Carlos, beckenbauer Mid= Iniesta, Xavi, Zidane, Pirlo, giggs, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Cruyff, Platini Forwards= Maradona, Pele, Messi, CR7, Drogba, Eto'o, Del Piero, Nistelroy, Henry, Puskas, Van Basten, Kempes, Zlatan It's a disservice to exclude all the vital positions in the sport when conversing about greatest players. Goals and assists win games, but so does defending and blocking shots. The current GOATs I have seen is CR7 and Messi, whichever you hold higher in your list is fine, a case can be made for either (Messi in current position as favorite with present WC victory) but the comparison is uniquely unbalanced in the sense that both players exhibited diverse qualities/skill that helped them excel in distinct manners. Messi was molded into a perfect system at Barca with all the offense going to or through him, relying on insane ball control, accurate passing, finesse shooting. CR7 relying on physicality, height, speed, step overs/skills, insane leap for headers, power shooting. Messi's position has changed winger, to attacking midfielder. Which if honest, I prefer his current position allowing him to dictate the game with great passes and shots from cutback passes. CR7 after the 2014 knee injury (tendinosis) lost the explosiveness/pace so began changing little by little to CF/striker/box player. Both deadly at what they do, teams will utilize them in their best positions. It's crazy to revere one and hate/trash the other. I would go as far to say Messi is the greatest attacking midfielder with forward numbers (stats), and CR7 is the greatest forward,finisher. Society is too fixated on forcing a singular title of THE GREATEST. Appreciate the level of greatness. It will be uncertain when we will have two legends such as the ones we got to witness for so many years. LM10 resume complete 💫👏

For instance, Messi is well rounded (dribbling, accuracy, freekicks, passing) so as he aged, with no major injuries, he was able to rely on all his other qualities. And CR7 was well rounded, strength, physicality, jumping, heading, speed, dribbling, but after knee condition he's been purely a goalscorer last 5-6 years. Messi's definitely more talented, better footballer at this stage of their careers, but it's impossible to forget CR7 trailing 4-1 in ballon d'ors to level it at 5-5 before Messi's last 2. CR7's influence for Madrid 3 peat in UCL. Honestly it's a shame some team never signed them to play together. Would complemented each other well. 🙌🏻

Yes he is the GOAT. His consistency over the years is unmatched. As a matter of fact, this 2022 version of Messi is more intelligent and deadlier than 2014 Messi. He doesn't need pace, he leads by example, he creates, he scores important goals and is more confident in penalties now. He has won everything under the sun and needs to prove nothing to no one. The man has 791 goals in 1002 games. That is insane. Has won absolutely everything in football. Of course he's the best of all time. That guy dominated 2014 World Cup and took very average squad to the Final. He did the same again in 2022 and won. This wasn't even nearly as good Argentina squad as 1994, 1998 or 2006. Of course there will be deniers. What is their excuse now? He can't become as big as Maradona and Pele because he never played as a goalkeeper and saved a penalty?

@@arcticdragon104 It's a bit different to score in local Brazilian leagues than consistently against the top teams in the world. And that Pele's record is dubious and the numbers are very suspect. How many goals has Pele scored? 757 goals in 831 games - 1957-1977 Pele scored nearly a goal-per-game during his 656 competitive games for Santos, though claims to have scored more than 1,000 times in his career. However, it is widely accepted hundreds of those goals came during tour or friendly matches. Pele will tell you otherwise!

@@detonator2112 Yes I incleded friendlies, many of those are high level games. If Messi is seen as best he is only the best by some units of measure, what ever those may be. He doesn't tower over the competition like Pele did. But ok, we football fans are reasonable people, I'm beginning to see Messi as a serious contender to Pele. He has played in a tough era and faced tough opponents.

Maradona, Messi, Pele... they're all great. Played different eras. It's like comparing F1 champs. Fangio vs. Senna... Ascari and Clark vs. Schumacher, Hakkinen, Alonso, Vettel.... impossible. But in my opinion Pele, Maradona and Messi are clearly the three best football players that have ever graced the game. Zidane, Ronaldos (both of them), George Best, Cryuff are amazing as well... but Messi is now part of the "Holy Trinity". Cheers.
