these videos are incredible, i can't thank you enough! i think many teachers dial down the difficulty of the content they teach which definitely limits grades, but you've really gone deep which is so beneficial. i hope to see your videos getting loads of views (but a teeny tiny selfish part of me wishes to keep you secret so the grade boundaries are low)

Thank you so much, Tilly - I really appreciate your comment. I started this channel to show students that they're capable of coming up with high-level, creative and sophisticated interpretations of literary works, and to reach beyond what conventions expect / limit them to achieve. Let's hope this message comes across to whoever stumbles upon my videos :)

If the question was simply asking about how Macbeth is presented could I use these 3 ideas as 3 points of my whole essay? Also could this be applied to a question on ambition? Thank you!

I highly doubt that any exam question would be as generic as 'how is Macbeth presented', and if you're doing the AQA paper then it'll be extract-based, i.e. you'll need to consider whether existentialism is reflected in the particular moment of the extract, and how it relates to other relevant moments in the play. I suppose there are intersections between Macbeth's existentialist impulses and ambitions, but again you'd have to come up with a strong line of argument that's unique to you. What are your thoughts on this?

@@JenChan i was thinking that maybe the rise and fall of his ambition is displayed through the 3 ethos’s of Macbeth and relate the Act of the extract given to whatever his dominant views are at that point in the play. I would use the existentialism as an overlooking overall point as I discuss the consequences or roots of his ambition? I only discovered this view of the play yesterday so im still experimenting.

No I haven't done AIC videos yet. My focus right now is on Shakespeare and poetry, but might expand to modern drama at some point!

So, why doesn’t Macbeth just kill himself. Or more importantly, succumbs to Macduff? What kept him from doing so? His existentialism?

Is the supernatural presented as nihilistic?
@JenChan
@JenChan 2 жыл бұрын
How exactly do you mean? If you're asking if the supernatural is a nihilistic idea, then not necessarily - supernatural forces can carry significance and meaning, whereas nihilism means a belief in the absolute meaninglessness of everything.

As in do we know the motive behind why the supernatural did what they did, they played a part in leading Macbeth to his downfall but why? Is it because they are outcasts and have no place in society that they feel like they can mess around because life has no purpose or meaning? I’m just asking because I know you’ve said that Macbeth and lady Macbeth end up with nihilistic mindsets but I just wanted to see if it’s linked to the supernatural and whether it’s under their influence that this has happened.
