Do all centre-backs have to be tall? That’s the question facing Manchester United and their new 5ft9in centre-back, Lisandro Martinez.
Traditionally centre backs are the biggest outfield players in the team, but do they need to be?
With the help of some professionals in the game, Sarah Shephard explains that a good centre-back doesn’t worry about their size. Illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

So nice to see this come out after Martinez delivered credible performances in the last 3 games on a bounce back after 2 losses. I would rather deal with his shortcomings (if any) over an out and out average defender like the ones we've had. 1 goal conceded in 3 games in the PL is no joke, especially for United who've conceded unnecessarily due to defensive errors. Back your new signing, he has more heart, talent and character in the field than anyone else.

Exactly that. Martinez looks really comfortable on the ball as well right from the off and looks like he actually wants the ball at his feet which is something we’ve lacked at all on the field for years let alone in defence. Someone needs to lookup how many times brentford failed to take advantage of martinez. And that bad start is also due to the whole team not performing well in those 2 opening matches. In Latin football culture, the prized attribute in centre backs is their tackling ability. That's why you get so many centre backs the stature of Ayala, Cordoba, Heinze, Puyol, etc. More agile and better tacklers. In British football culture, tackling has never been viewed as the priority attribute for a centre back. Instead, there's a preference for tall centre backs with an upright stance who rely primarily on positioning to defend. You see this type of centre back sometimes in Latin football, such as Pique. Then you get tackling centre backs sometimes in British football, such as Carragher. Yet there's a clear difference in what the two football cultures want from their centre backs.

One thing which must be mentioned is average height. South Americans tend to be about 2" shorter than northern Europeans who are the model for the typical Premier League centre back. Furthermore, in Latin America football is often a route out of poverty for young men who in many cases have suffered malnutrition in childhood and are consequently sometimes shorter than they might have otherwise been.

That's because you've fundamentally misunderstood the aerial duels stat. Aerial duels are defined as both players off the ground competing for an off the ground ball. That's how lisandro was able to come out of the Brentford game without losing an aerial duel despite being beaten in the air easily for the goal on the line. Because he's on the ground and the Brentford player isn't it doesn't count as a lost ground duel either, in fact it's not even recorded negatively against lisandro in any way in mainstream stats. Often lisandro doesn't get off the ground for contested duels, only free ones... Hence a high aerial duel percentage. He's not good in the air.

@@JoshAFC Have you even watched either the video explaining how short defenders are able to make up for differences in height or Uniteds last 3 games where Martinez clearly showed these principles in action winning multiple headers? Because you sound like you don't. I'm not going by straight statistics either. The content was created probably after the first 2 games. So we can bare that at that time there were no updates since... cause he has definitely shown out post those games. But he makes a good point of Maguire not being played to his strength not because he isn't good but simply because it hasn't fit the playing style. He would be a solid for the Dyche's Era at Burnley but for us it was easy to exploit his weakness because nothing was (or barely) in sync. Eventually it messed with his confidence. The best thing to do is not wack the guy with words. But begin to evaluate the future whether to get him to adjust to those tactics or use him in games that they think he can stand firmly throughout. The guy is good we see him for England it's unfortunate that his time at United has really deteriorated in terms of performance. I only wish him the best. More power to Licha, the back 4 for has been showing some promise. Loved the last 2 clean sheets as well.

Funny how “Maguire doesn’t fit the play style” but since he was dropped United have stopped playing out from the back and have a lower defensive line to compensate for De Gea. I think you want more of Joachim Anderson type. Big enough to win the ball in the air & be a bully. But also having the ability to start play. But you could look at 2 CB's like a big & small striker partnership. Anderson & Guéhi are a good example or if you've got a back 3. The big man in the middle with 2 shorter ball playing CB's either side. Like Ajer for Brentford or Dier for Spurs.

Ricardo Carvalho was 1.80m, that's 5f11, and he had a very good premier league career and made a fantastic partnership with the taller Terry. It's all about what the player brings to the team and whether the team can clear long balls in the air or not. Carvalho was very quick, almost impossible to beat in 1vs1 situations and very combative in every situation (including in the air where he challenged with the height he had).

After the Liverpool and Southampton games I came to the realisation that Martinez defends the way Tevez used to attack - with pure venomous tenacity. That lad has a few red cards waiting for him I have no doubt, I'd definitely put a bet on at least one of them being against City in a few weeks. Still, he's a real menace, and I think as long as Varane stays fit he'll keep Maguire out of the team. That is... Until he puts Haaland in hospital and gets arrested for crimes against humanity.

This is facts though. Dalglish and the the great SAF were the only Brits to win the EPL. Ever since that, its been teams managed by other European managers with teams that are AT BEST, 50% English. The only modern day Brit coaches who seems to have proper continental style tactics is maybe Graham Potter. Aside from Carrick, Scholes, Hoddle etc, the English don't really have true midfield maestros like the Spanish, Italians, Dutch etc. They still emphasize work rate, quickness and being a "hard lad".

An important part of this I think is partnership, a 5ft9 centre back can work very well as long as you have that player that can win those aerials. A technically gifted player who can rob the ball from the feet of forwards and close players down quickly and a stopper who can stop players in their tracks and win those headers has historically made a very good setup for clubs

Martinez is an agressive ball playing CB and plays to his strengths which makes him effeient. This seems to be a legacy issue in England specifically where defending Is still seen as ‘a big man job’ to win headers and tackle hard. But football has moved on defenders need technical skill to pass the ball now (not just blast it 50 yards every time) reading the game and anticipating opponents movements is more effective, a good football brain has nothing to do with your height and it’s time English football realised that especially when the best team in England have guardiola as manager who has always prioritised technique and finesse over strength and power

This is such a useless topic. What I loved about football growing up was the fact that anyone willing could play. You always leverage your strengths to overcome you weaknesses. Whether you big, small, tall, short, fast or slow you could find a specialty in the sport and contribute to the team. The fact that it is a team sport means you can leverage others' strengths too. There are successful footballers in every position in every size. How can you ask if someone is too short to do a job when there is evidence of them successfully doing it? Not every topic that's trending or comes across your table is worth entertaining, and I'm disappointed in Tifo for failing to make this distinction in this case.

@@l...m9415 before Leicester, Martinez's height won all but one aerial duel, and that was against Liverpool. It's clearly not the issue. Varane is also the perfect partner as he's much more cultured on the ball, thus allowing faster ball circulation and distribution between them and the dropping midfielder. Maguire is utterly slow and Martinez was trying to clean up all of Maguire's and Shaw's mess, which many wrongly mistaken as his fault. The topic worth exploring is not his height, but the English media bias and dinosaur pundits.

Harry Maguire used to dominate in Leister because they always had very strong defensive midfielders, so he was much more comfortable sitting back as the last man defense, on of his strengths. With united he was always expected to move the ball higher up the pitch and run back on defense or press high to stop counter attacks early which is his weakness. Martinez and Varane suits that style of play perfectly

This kind of attitude - the fixation on having good ball carriers, midfield profile type defenders etc - does play a significant role in those games that a lot of big clubs have where a team sits deep and plays on the counter, relying on set pieces or route one. You know the type - the 70 vs 30 possession, 24 shots to 2, losing 1-0. Point being, clubs should recruit and train both bigger and smaller defenders, in order to be prepared for each eventuality.

We can over-intellectualise this all we want, and as he's a shiny new expensive he's going to have a honeymoon period where he is defended for a while. But from a standing start at set pieces you have an advantage reaching higher balls if you are taller. United have to work around that. There's plenty of amazing tall cbs, but they had to work far harder to achieve what they did, so Martinez will too. I loved Daley Blind for his intelligence and there's so many parallels - shorter (but not as short), left footed, great on the ball. But his lack of physicality kept being an issue which meant he had a limit on his capability. It's a long old season, and if martinez keeps playing like he has and keeping clean sheets he'll be invaluable. But if teams like Brentford get success hoofing it at him for 45 minutes, or he loses out to Isak or Haaland for a header and we drop points, it'll be an issue. Essentially the only way this debate is really solved is via each and every game. But a cb needs to challenge for headers, somehow. There's no getting around that
