When you got to the train tracks it suddenly hit me that you were only a block north of El Ambia Cubano, the best little Cuban restaurant in Melbourne. It don't stay open that late, and the surroundings are a bit sketchy after dark, but the food will make you come back. I was in town and found myself eating there 3 nights in a row. Yeah,... that good.

On one of my roaming motorcycle trips from AZ, I ended up in Key West. On the way home, I stopped in a real old dive bar in Melbourne. After a few, I realized that I'm staying in town for the night. I inquired about motels; the bartender says " we're a motel, too". I registered while sitting at the bar, he came back with a wash cloth, bath and hand towel - all see through. It was not a boarding house and if sober, I would have just left without even asking for a refund...

Where you touring downtown on a Sunday night? Damn. Go on a Friday or Saturday night and experience real Downtown Melbourne. It’s ok, now… Back in 2004-2013 and the area was amazing! Things have changed a bit sense then. But the vibe is still good. As far as being safe, it’s more or less like any downtown. From my experience, downtown Melbourne is a safe place to enjoy yourself. Not sure why it’s only “relatively safe.”
