Seeing everything he won, hearing about old heads talk about him, seeing the conditions he played in, knowing that he took drugs and wasn’t taking care of his body the way he should’ve been. There’s a reason him and Pele are applauded the way they are. It’s like boxing. Sugar Ray Robinson is my goat but I was born after he died.

Messi is by far the greatest player I've ever seen. Yes tackling was tougher and some of the pitches were worse in Diego's era..But every single defender and player today is as fit as an olympic athlete. Messi's game is analyzed to the nth degree by opposition coaches and tactical strategies have been implemented on how to stop him for the past 15 years! And they just can't! Messi has been playing like Diego was in 1986-89 since he broke through Barcelona's 1st team. There has never been a footballer in history to reach that peak and do it so long and so consistantly as Messi.

And as for Messi v Ronaldo debate when speaking about ability only and who you’d rather watch…. This has always stuck with me: Ronaldo done 3 skills to get past 1 player, Messi done 0 skills to get past 3 players… he was absolutely magic in his prime and no one in history can touch his level of greatness on the pitch

LOL!!! The question isn’t who had the most successful career, it’s who is the greater player of the two. The correct answer is Diego Maradona. Here’s a thought experiment that will help you understand. Just write a list of world class defenders playing in La Liga during Messi’s playing career in the 2000s for the best team in Spain, then write a list of world class defenders playing in Serie A in the 1980s during Maradona’s playing career for a small provincial club in southern Italy that had never won a league title or European trophy in its history. One of those lists is VERY short and the other list is VERY long. Messi has had an easy ride in his career compared to the legends of the past like Maradona, Pele, Puskas, Eusebio, Cruyff, and Platini. Not to diminish his accomplishments, but Messi played in the era where Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender of all-time. 😄😆😂🤣

They just can’t accept that Messi played in an era when players didn’t have as many social media followers as today. They refuse to understand that there weren’t nearly as many random, meaningless stats to obsess over back then. There was no stats for how many times Messi broke wind near the corner flag; there was no stats for how many times the ball went out of play after deflecting off the back of his right heel; there was no stats for how many times he took a throw in with his eyes closed; there were no stats for how many times he bent over to tie his laces during a match; there were no stats for how many litres of saliva he spat on the pitch during a match. The real modern day GOAT is better than Messi in all of these regards and more. Wether you have Maradona , Messi or Pele as your No1. You can not deny that Messi has an argument in his favour for being the best of them all. After that you can choose your favourite. Maradona & Pele have the same argument in their favour too. If you narrow it down to 2-3 players, Messi has to be one of them. Not a matter of opinion. Numbers, trophies, play style make it undeniable.

What they fail to see is when they mention Haaland is he scored I think 12 penalties. Messi stopped taking penalties after Barcelona and if you take 12 away from Haaland and add 12 to Messi which he would have got had he been the penalty taker at PSG then that would have changed everything. Furthermore, for PSG Mbappe was their main striker and Messi was playing more of a supporting role and playing from Midfield as a provider. Haaland is always hovering around the six yard box which is where most of his goals game from. Lastly, Messi plays a much more fluent game, Haaland is leggy, jerky, not smooth on the ball. Pound for pound Messi deserved this is as the best football player last year.

Maradonna for me. Never played on any all star teams. Was man marked every game with brutal and by today's standards - illegal tackling. But never stopped. Never seen that kind of skill combined with a determination and will of a warrior. Messi is phenomenal for sure but no way he would have survived in the older era. There is a reason the careers of stars like Diego and R9 were cut short by injuries

Maradona didn’t play on a super team that’s true but he also accomplished very little in comparison to Messi, Maradona also was playing against people who were chain-smoking and were overweight while defensive set ups were horrendous in comparison to modern football. Maradona’s case for being greater than Messi is no existent, Messi peaked higher, had greater longevity was a far more intelligent player than Maradona. Anyone who says Maradona bases it off sentimentality and nostalgia if it’s of facts he’s nowhere near.

Why don't anybody talk about this? Well, i cannot deny the fact about those horrific tackles likes of maradona and pele had to suffer, and of course the quality and condition of the pitch they played in... But i would like for you guys to put forward an argument about how social media and MNC's have come into play in today's time. Having a set mind and not being distracted by all the unnecessary attention and the paparazzi culture is one hell of an achievement in itself. Had there been instagrams and tiktoks around maradona's time i doubt he would have managed to do all the things he did and all the achievements he's had. And as all of us know messi did it from.2007-2022 that says immensely about his determination, mental strength and his love for the game doesn't it? Likes of pogba, hazard and others have fallen out of love for the game. That's another reason Messi in my mind is the GREATEST ATHLETE OF ALL TIME.

Messi, played for a prime Barca for most of his career with the best players and best manager. Maradona dragged a poor Napoli side to 2 Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup. Maradona, scored the greatest goal of all time on a dodgy pitch.

I’m so sick and tired of Maradona fans twisting history to support their rapist coke addict, Napoli signed Maradona in 84 they finished 11th the year before and finished 8th the season he joined (hardly catapulting them) they then signed 8 players in 1985 one being Bruno Giordano who scored 10 goals (Maradona took pens) in Seria A and they then finished 3rd, they then had another massive transfer window in 86 signing 14 players including Andrea Carnevale who was their 2nd highest scorer behind Maradona (who was taking pens again) and they then finished 1st. Out of the 18 players who played for Napoli in their first title winning side 14 of them joined after Maradona, so no it wasn’t Maradona who carried Napoli it was their bank account, and the evidence is their, he joins in 84 and they go up 3 spots in the league they then sign 22 players the next 2 seasons and go from 8th - 3rd - 1st. Maradona was a major part in their league triumphs but if it wasn’t for the injection of cash into Napoli they never would’ve won the league and that’s the truth.

You could say the same of any modern players in regard to former legends so that is a totally extraneous argument. What separates Messi and Maradona is that both were unbelievable maverick talents but Messi paired his brilliant dribbling and playmaking with an unprecedented level of goal scoring and success with club football over a period of 15 years.

I think messi playing style is more like Maradona than any other players. Though he is a mixers of other football player. After following this greatest players for quate a long time. I really want to figure out what really is his secret behind his success. I think some of his secret is he is a friends of all gootballers. He learned from them and he combine all their strenght and keep on improving himself on. If you really watch him carefully. He is a combination of most key players in footbal history. He then self disapline, determined and focus more on his carrier with set targets while disassociate himself from distructive things. Despite the challenges and critics he face.He just work to be himself by developing his gift and more importantly his character which his hard work paying off. I think this is something that both footballer and people who want to successed in life should admired and learned from.

Every era has its traits, it's not black and white, mostly for every argument regarding them it's like a coin, both sides of it have a valid point. The only thing that should matters, is that both with their styles, attributes etc are Genius of the game, they are just off the charts players among off the charts players that deserve the ultimate respect, like once was Pele. In any case in terms of those off the charts talents I've spoke above, clearly Edson and Lio has more titles and stats under their belt, so they deserve to be more celarly named the Ultimate GOAT, yet it's a silly game that most of times end with stupid discussions and bashing in a remarkable annoying way some of these extremely special players. We still can preffer Maradona as our choice or even if I personally can think that there is a susbtantial gap between some of the usually named GOATS, at the end of the day there isn't much wrong when choosing some of the usually more common named fellas.

Maradona wasn't more talented than Messi though. What Maradona had was was more grit and the greater ability to grab a game by the scruff of the neck, whereas Messi had an insane number of goals over Diego. Your splitting hairs between their passing, dribbling and all round creativity. Messi wiped all that out in Qatar though. No one has ever done what he did - he was the best player in every knockout game and scored in each of them, and bailed the Argies out against Mexico when they needed a win.

There is no question. I have seen Pelé when i was teenager, Maradona when i was adult and Messi. You have to know that in football there are 11 players, so a player is just 1/11 of the team, can a player win playing solo? No. But any player can bring more or less effort than another player. So the only way to measure a player is from his talent, skills and the % he brings for winning the game. In my lifetime i have seen just a player who fill all these 3 spots at highest level, and this is Maradona. 1.His Talent is still unmatched, even some kids that prefer messi admit Maradona has more Talent 2.His skill are still the highest than any player 3. In WC 1986 he made a performance so amazing that people still believe Maradona could literally win solo, the only player that achieved this honor. The problem is today new generation think numbers are the most important parameter to judge a player, Cristiano Ronaldo is the main reason why kids don’t understand football today, he convinced people he was at messi’s level or better than cause he scored similar amounts of goals meanwhile messi is far better than him. You see the best watching at him, not by reading stats.

Lots of people saying Messi GOAT are clearly younger and he’s all they know. What makes Maradona a bit better for me is that he went to a lowly club Napoli back then and raised them to great heights. When Messi joined Barca they were already a great team under Rijkard and Ronaldinho was kicking ass. Ronaldinho should be put into GOAT discussion too IMO. And what about Pele then? When i can see messi and clips of Maradona defending and playing in goal as well as they attack then ill consider them the goat till then it will always be duncan edwards in my eyes he could do everything

Oh yes the mighty Duncan edwards who’s amazing attacking output was 21 goals in 177 games 😂😂😂, so if Duncan edwards was as good at defending as he was at attacking he couldn’t have been a very good defender either.

@@thebristolianmackem2039I understand that, but you’re saying that as if Duncan Edwards was comparable as an attacker to Messi or Maradona. It was tragic what happened to Duncan but I don’t base my opinion of others opinion I like to see it myself and I have watched old games of Duncan and he was amazing but to my eyes Messi and Maradona were far superior.

@@jakemackay1747 i think its how you view it i appreciate defending as much as attacking maybe more an old saying is attackers win you games defenders win you trophies and the babes won plenty and I will admit he wasn't as easy on the eyes as messi or Maradona iv always put that down to his play style similar to Gareth bale

Julian Alvarez doesn’t have as many social media followers as Messi, nor can he bring as many eyeballs to the award ceremony, nor can he generate as much advertising revenue for France Football magazine that organises the Ballon d’Or Award. Sadly, that’s all that matters ever since 2010 when the Ballon d’Or ceased to be a serious accolade.
