The most recent Mexican elections have resulted in the victory of Mexico's first female and Jewish leader, Claudia Sheinbaum. She will be succeeding current populist President AMLO, but how much change will this actually bring?

It's gotta just be your hoodie on that chair again, right? A hint of fear keeps your eyes peeled on it though... it's just a chair right... it's just a chair... did it just move a little? It's always just a chair. It's got to be just a chair. This is absurd, you have work in the morning, it's time for bed, stop freaking yourself out about chairs. Peter forgot to mention the USA's involment in empowering the cartels selling weapons AND all the ammo they need for such weapons. Also US funded political parties in Mexico together with a US funded Judicial system that works for American interests also do not help the country in their fight against crime or equality. Is the heat that strong in Vegaa you would forget to mention these important details. You can add personalities that promote half truths of Mexico's reality to the challanges Mexico has to face.

I lived in Mexico during AMLO's presidency. What was amazing was that he was generous to the poor people with cash grants but at the same time cut services to the poor. Public hospitals and daycares which benefit the poor disproportionately were starved of funds and killed respectively. He spent massively on three projects (airport, refinery and tourist train) while cancelling probably the most important new aqueduct to Mexico City... .

Opinion on drug cartels: it will continue to be a problem in Mexico because of the insane amount of money it generates with a high U.S. demand. Mexico doesn’t have a drug consumption problem which is ironic. The fact that Cartels have diversified income just shows how long this has been going on. Violence rates are going down and hundreds or maybe thousands of foreigners are moving here permanently.

Foreigners moving to Mexico has nothing to do with lower violence rates, it's simple economics of demographics and inflation in the US. I lived in Mexico City and respectfully disagree with Zeihan's assessment of Sheinbaum. She did amazing things for the city, and I believe she will do great things for the Mexican people in general. She's definbitely a refinement of AMLO's core principle, The Fourth Transformation, but I don't think she's going to rule like a surrogate of AMLO or a lackey. She has her own incredible strengths which AMLO lacks. I've a bittersweet view of AMLO, most things he mentioned about him are accurate. But still, he enjoys overwhelming popularity in the nation and many will benefit from his programs. He does have huge blind spots which have left some of the country in neglect, I agree with that. I hope Sheinbaum uses the office to enact a better version of this national transition. I'm confident, but then again I'm a Mexican with money. Regardless of how progressive my thinking is, my personal experience is above a certain critical level. But having been born very poor in Mexico, I see how the nation keeps rising financially, If we could refine & repair the wealth gaps and stop the cartels we would be soaring. These are big tasks.

Socialist wealth transfer from rich to poor is a rare and wonderful thing, though it doesn't seem to be really happening in Mexico. They need a government that will transfer wealth from the cartels to the poor. Edit: looked up Bekele. He has apparently locked up the entire criminal population of El Salvador. Gang violence had dropped precipitously - but now, what does he do with them? He needs new projects to reform and employ all these people.

There's a symbiosis beetwen the politicians and the cartels, both parasite the people. The thing with Cartels Is that they are not an opposing force nor a foreign enemy of the State, They initially were under the command of the rulers in the PRI Dictatorship Era, the following democratic leaders took advantage of the shock doctrine of Salinas and Let the structures of gobernance fall appart while they sacked the country, thats when cartels become famous because They are left on their own but never are appart from the government, think of them like Wagner PMC and prighozin, but dozens of them instead of one or 2, thats the relation, They are a blight on society but a took of the state to muster when they please. Literally medieval mercenary bands: When no war They blight the countryside robbing and extorting the people, but when there's a peassant revolt the King calls them over to quell the rebels

Not officially, of course, but effectively? That's a concept Americans should make the effort to understand better, since it also applies to other important countries around the world, like Russia, and sometimes even in the U.S.A. Hard for a Mexican politicain not to be pro cuban gov. if that Mexican politician wants to strengthen relationship with said country. Cuba was the gate of the Indies for centuries before the US was even a country. You think some political differences are gonna change that?

The biggest problem is the rise of authocracy of Mexico. A potential Venezuela style regime would be a disaster for the region.

It won't. It will be way worse: bigger country, more people, more cartels, oil money running thin every day... Today the ruling party just anounced they will push for an electoral reform and also a reform to the supreme court and judiciary system.

Very much. Show me a court system within organized crime where the poorest citizens get a voice in who represents them and makes laws for them relating to taxes. We call this accountability in English and I haven't seen it replicated - ever - in organized crime. People like to call taxes extortion when they just hate government.

being the first jew is really something because the Jewish community in Mexico is supermsall compared to the size of the country, last time I checked they were like 25,000 jews in Mexico and the country has 140 million people, we got 1 million Arabs, mostly christians but also muslims.

If the Cartels feel emboldened by their continued success, could there be a secession of the provinces that they control? This, I feel is very likely 😬

I am mexican and I agree in something of what you said, but not in everything. The cartels are a big problem because some people want easy money, they need money, but we can improve it by sport promotion, cultural activities or something like that, besides family being responsible for their children, wich is one of the ideas the new president is going to work on. By the way, all the previous gobernment left the country sadly bad, it is not possible to fix it in 5 or 6 years.
