Is MJ's 'Thriller' Still The Best Selling Album of All Time?!

On February 7th, 1984, Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' was declared the best selling album of all time after achieving sales of 25 million copies worldwide. In the 40 years since, its numbers have gotten murkier as Michael Jackson's legacy and King of Pop status grew. Some sources say it's achieved 60 or 66 million in sales, others tout outlandish figures as high as 120 million copies sold.
In this video, we look into the history of the best selling album of all time, how Michael Jackson achieved this, whether any other has come close to knocking him off his throne and what relevancy it still holds (if any) in today's landscape of music?

@@MrKingoverall just say "Bad" is your favourite album. I feel like you "Bad" album fans try to make it more than it was. It wasn't nearly as popular as Thriller. He started to experience a decline in that period of time. Even "Dangerous" sold less than "Bad". The general public turned on Michael as he became lighter and began to physically change. Plus his music wasn't as powerful or unique anymore. He seemed to be playing catch up with all the other popstars.

*The RIAA HATES Michael Jackson & they have been trying to dethrone him ever since he broke the record with Thriller.* Michael was a Motown artist at heart even though he left Motown Records. Motown's essence remained within him. But Motown didn't play by RIAA's rules so they don't want a Motown (Black) artist at the top of the charts. They keep telling me that this greatest hits collection of the Eagles is SOOOO hot & sought after. But I don't see Eagles fans everywhere like I do Michael fans. I don't see Eagles impersonators like I see Michael impersonators. Members of the Eagles can live their lives in public in peace without too much scrutiny, intrusion, & lack of privacy. Michael Jackson couldn't even go to a public bathroom in peace! Paparazzi would literally try to take pictures of him while he was on the toilet. Michael wasn't just in demand like this in the Thriller era. He was like this for the rest of his life even without a record. *The Eagles Greatest Hits' placement on this chart is pure propaganda. It's a message to discredit Michael.* Hotel California was a jam but NOTHING can hardly stand up to Michael's discography. NOTHING. The Eagles' entire discography up to that point in 1975 vs. 9 songs of Thriller from Michael Jackson. Michael beat the entire Eagles with 9 songs. They KNOW who #1 is, who #1 was, & who #1 will always be, They keep trying to crown a "New King of Pop". Justin Timberlake couldn't hold up. Justin Bieber couldn't hold up. Drake can't hold up. Harry Styles can't hold up. So now they're placing all the chips on Taylor Swift to dethrone Michael. If they can't beat him with a "New King", they'll try to top him with a "New Queen" (unfortunately for Madonna). But she won't hold up either. No matter HOW much they push her down everyone's throats. The fact that she can go to a Super Bowl game in the audience PROVES she ain't on Michael's level. NO ONE was in awe of her being there & she didn't overpower the game itself. Just a nice feature attraction. Michael couldn't even show up in that stadium unless he was performing at Halftime or else there would be a riot. *Thriller is BY FAR the #1 album in the entire world AND in the United States as well.* *And truth be told the album sales DO NOT capture the album's impact because the BOOTLEG is untraceable.* I was a kid who was given a bootleg 8-track of Thriller in the days of the Thriller. YOU CANNOT KNOW how the album impacted Central America, South America, Africa, Asia, & Oceania. Much less its full impact in North America & Europe. The BOOTLEG went way further than the official SALES. No matter how much they manipulate the counting algorithms to get the result they want, Michael Jackson remains #1.

@meld9825 EXACTLY. The industry killed Michael Jackson to find a younger version. But there IS no younger version & they regret it. That's why you keep seeing them "crown" a new "Michael". Some people are once in a lifetime, once in a century, once in a millenium. NOBODY was on his level in every aspect. You can find one in an artistic comparison like Prince. You can find one in a commercial comparison like Madonna. But if you take each facet of comparison, THERE IS NO COMPARISON. Michael Jackson was treated as a Head of State around the world. Because he WAS. The PEOPLE chose him. Michael was elected by the PEOPLE beyond national borders. The Peruvian Shamans did a ceremony at the end of 2008 to make good wishes for the New Year of 2009. They performed their ritual around pictures of World Leaders. One was *Evo Morales,* the *1st Indigenous President of Bolivia.* One was *Hugo Chavez,* the *President of Venezuela.* One was *Fidel Castro,* the *President of Cuba.* One was *Barack Obama,* the recently elected *1st Black President of the United States.* One was of the *Obama Family* with *Barack, his wife Michelle, & their daughters Malia & Sasha.* And One was of *Michael Jackson,* the *King of Pop, Rock, & Soul* as well as *King of the Sanwi.* That says it all, don't you think. The Shamans said Michael would be stronger in 2009 than ever before. They were right but not in the way we wanted it to happen.

There are many great albums throughout history, but none come remotely close to Thriller. It's more than an album, it's a cultural movement in history. MJ'S vision forever changed the way we think of music; it single-handedly launched MJ into a level of stardom that hasn't been seen before or since. Sure, the way we sell LP'S may have changed, but there will never be another impactful body of work like Thriller in any lifetime. Great video from the detail. Long live the king of pop. 🎉

That video is absolutely comical but that's besides the point. I read alot of his comments and yours. Can't tell if you changed your opinion, or if you just respect his musical talent. Or if you're two faced because you called him an evil man in one of your comments, then you call him a poor guy and thought he was handsome on another video on this channel. But like i said, not trying to be condescending. just confused that you talk highly of him here, and on that one guys channel you slander him.

The Eagles sales are a big fraud. First the album was certified 12x Platinum for 12 million copies in 1990 then it was the Nielsen Soundscan who counted albums sales in the United States and between 1991 to 2006 the Eagles Greatest Hits sold over 5 million copies indicating 17 million copies sold overall in USA at that point. Between 1991 to 2020 the greatest hits album sold 6.4 million copies meaning that by 2020 it sold 18.4 million overall in US and not 38 million copies as the RIAA claimed in 2018.

+ktmusic It's nothing but a pure scam to discredit Michael, the Motown artist, the Black artist. The Eagles do not have the impact of Michael Jackson. Who generally knows them outside of Hotel California? The Eagles do not have the fanbase Michael has in life OR death. The Eagles can live their lives in peace without being hounded by the press or fans. Young people cannot generally pick out a member of the Eagles off the top of their head. Michael has babies in the CRIB bopping to his sounds before they even know how to TALK! Michael is so far beyond as an artist that he's probably never gonna be beaten. Topping some award accolades is just scratching the surface. Michael released adult albums less frequently. The fact that he can go away for years & come back to conquer the charts is unheard of. The RIAA KNOWS that Michael is #1 but they hate it & keep trying to replace him. It didn't work with Eminem. It didn't work with Justin Timberlake. It didn't work with Justin Bieber. It didn't work with Drake. It didn't work with Harry Styles. And it won't work with Taylor Swift either. They have the accept reality. They have to face the facts. Michael Jackson is #1. PERIOD.

Whoever made this video probably wasn’t alive when they came out. Well I was I was 14 and I’m gonna tell you right now whatever they said it sold probably sold more than what they said. When thriller was put in the Guinness Book of World Records, it was announced it had already sold 40 million copies but I can tell you when I was a kid you couldn’t find thriller anywhere anywhere anywhere anywhere Motown 25 came out and Michael Jackson’s fame which was already worldwide completely exploded Taylor, Swift, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Drake, any of these artist today, had nothing close to the level of fame Michael Jackson had. You could literally turn on the radio station and I remember doing this. I turned on the radio to PLJ they were playing beat it. I turned it to hot 97 they were playing wanna be starting something. I turned it to 98.7 kiss FM they were playing Billie Jean I turned it to Z 100 they were playing PYT I turned it to the station, they were playing thriller. I turned it to BLS they’re playing Jean literally every station had his songs playing. You couldn’t find the album anywhere and when you did, it was only one or two copies left. At one point The was selling 1 million copies a week. I’m gonna tell you right now although I was a kid and I was not working in a record store at the time that album sold more than what they said it did that album was selling like crazy and his Fame was just insane and he did it without the Internet without the help of Spotify without the help of KZfaq without the help of TikTok, and none of these existed for another 40 years almost so yeah, they always trying to erase or downplay Michael’s great Legacy, so they can replace him with a white artist that’s what their goal is that’s why they make videos like this. Yeah, I said it and I’ll say it again.

There are so many factors that affect the title of "best selling album of all time" like obviously, the lack of records before 1980's. But also the proliferation of social media in today's time. Also the increase of the human population, the rise of streaming, piracy in the 90's and early 2000s. So for me I just listen to MJ's songs and enjoy his creations (of course he and his team's work)

Michael was an artist and time followed it's way as it happened with all artists...is Michelangelo better than Raphael...in certain ways...depends at what details you look after...but do I love one more than other? Do I learn to be a better person being humbled by the grandiosity of their work? Maybe one of them is the best for me...we can measure and we can count, but who's the best it's not ours to know, at least that's my opinion...

MJ is the G. O.A.T of all times and times again and His level is unmatched. We will look at algorithms now and do analysis of this and that but you really have to have lived through the 80s,90s to really understand who MJ was and how he impacted the music industry. Yes, all these new artists will be having more streaming numbers than MJ in this era and time but who can say, I made short music films, I created thriller, bad, smooth criminals, dangerous, who is it (which I feel is a masterpiece and a cryptic MV) and so on.....Who can say? I pioneered this and this? I mean, MJ was a culture in his own right, from the way he dressed, moved, sang, danced... He had that uniqueness quality that mainstream artists nowadays lack... So, You really have to have lived through that era, witness him doing his craft to really understand that he was not from this universe... To understand the magnitude of his Fame. ... What artist gone or present is known for generations, we have gen Z kids listening to MJ, researching MJ... Tell me who is researching "The Eagles"... .... Problem is they try so hard to stain this man's History but His great work will always be there for generations to come. .... Not to smash any of the present artists, but tell me, who will still be searching for Miss Americana 10 0r 15 years to come after she's no more? Who? But MJ fanbase is ever growing. .... Not being bias but please come up with something unseen before like how thriller debuted in the 80s.. give a historical performances, have 5 top #1 hits globally from a single album and maybe we the people might rethink and position you in that highly sought after spot as the "NEW KING" otherwise artists be replicating MJ's choreos/demos n then wanting to be throned as new kings or Queens.. Its never happening in this my lifetime or next. Just as there can never be another MOZART so there'll never be another MJ, he's a once in a lifetime appearance. PERIODT!

I’d suggest the crown should go to the winner of the artist whose catalog sells for the most money. For that win it’s MJ at $600m. Springsteen is so far #2. This figure gives you an overall look at how valuable the artist’s work is to the industry.

Great records still sell a lot in physical formats, so the argument of streaming vs physical is useless. Adele is one such example, all her records have sold over 25 million in physical formats. Streaming is free, and in most cases, the numbers are inflated or bought. So we can not factor in the free or fake streaming when deciding an artist's achievement. When someone spends a significant money to buy a CD or vinyl, that is what actually counts! Jackson is still selling like hot cakes and every year his music enters the Billboard charts. Thriller was in Top 10 in Hot 100 charts when the anniversary issue came out. It's unbelievable what an influence this guys has!
