Is Mindanao Philippines safe for Tourists or Expats? This is my experience and opinion on safety in the Southern Philippines as a traveler and expat. Bottom line is no place is absolutely safe, but I would not have brought my family here if I thought we would be in mortal danger.

Great video with good info. I lived in Davao 2005-2007 and never had a single moment where I felt unsafe. In fact, I would describe it as one of the happiest times of my life. Plan to visit again in the near future. There's a couple of places I wouldn't visit but overall, Mindanao gets a bad rep that it doesn't deserve.

i lived in Davao since childhood until 2006. It was until Duterte sits as mayor, when petty crimes, people taking drugs in the corner, NPA terror attacks to villages came to a halt around in the 90s during my college days. Prior to that, petty crimes is so rampant, known drug addicts are your neighbors, and NPA coming to people's houses extorting. Not sure what Duterte did, but I suddenly I forgot about fear, and felt safe the same feeling as I live in Singapore now. I totally enjoyed my teenage days in Davao, without having fear and thinking about safety. I've been working in Manila before and travelled to different places around the country and it's only in Davao that I felt free and safe.

@@rahulmaron I hope you are enjoying your time in Singapore. That is the cleanest city I have ever been too, and I also felt very safe everywhere I went when there. My only problems were taxi drivers that wanted to appoint themselves tour guides so they could run up the meter, but I never cared because I was just a visitor and enjoyed getting to see the various areas they would show me. I think a lot of people may get upset by that but I would just go with the flow, even ask them to pull over a moment so I could take a picture. lol

I have retired here in mindanao in a province called pigcawayan. I am only foreigner i have seen so far. My girlfriend has told me that there are some areas that are not safe but long distance from where I am. Most regions that I have been warned about are Muslim majority areas. I have no reason to go into them but on my travels to davao for immigration visas and some shopping I have to pass through some of those locations but I hire trusted driver with private vehicles. Davao is very safe in the city but would be careful where I traveled around there

wife and I are planning on retiring early and move to Mindanao, outside of Iligan, she's originally from there and has family there. I've visited before 6 years ago, never saw any other foreigner as well. Was a fun and safe trip. I never had any worries of personal safety while there. I'm more fearful of personal safety just manila traffic :)

No need to worry about Muslim majority areas, it's just that all you hear from news are bad things and never the good stuffs. When in fact, the NCR or Manila is far more dangerous and has higher frequency of crimes.

I have to agree with your thinking. I am from California. This year my wife (from CDO) and I spent 6 months in Mindanao and I even went to their night markets and not once did anyone bother me or even frown at me. Granted I was the only foreigner in some places I went and visited or some night markets people were shocked to see a foreigner but I just got told I was guapo or hey Joe I got a deal for you. I can honestly say California for the most part is way more dangerous, especially Los Angeles Sacramento or the Bay Area than probably 90% of Mindanao. Its ok though for me, the less foreigners there the lower the property cost will be when I move there in 4 years.

Great video Doc. Just got back from Koronadal. Third trip this year. Got married there Nov. 26th. And we bought a building lot to build a home on in the future. My wife and I go out shopping almost daily, or doing other errands. I am one of only a few westerners in Koronadal, so yes, I stick out! And I get a lot of stares, mostly from the younger crowd. But I feel completely safe there. As safe or safer than at my home in Seattle.

mindanao I totally disagree with you I have been to there a lot and there is places like you discussed you would not go, but you do need to compare apples to apples and the population in mindanao is nowhere near the population in the United States. The people that I was with they have told me you cannot go down that street you cannot travel over to their you cannot do this. I was in jelly be one time I see a young lady taking pictures of me the lady that I was with said let's go, you are in danger, I can honestly say I have never heard of anyone getting your head cut off in America, may be in Texas chainsaw massacre but that's about it. Don't get me wrong I would go there but it definitely not safe areas in that island is extremely dangerous, and I totally understand what the threat risk is on that island, and bringing my kids there not in 1 million years but that is my opinion. And I would agree with you to theirs are a lot of dangerous places in America to and all over the world, I would be very careful if I was you buddy especially broadcasting that you are a lawyer, people will assume that you got lots of money and you probably do I just hope to God nothing ever happens to you but you are not as safe as you think you are

I've done A LOT of "research" on Mindanao, more specifically Davao City, and I've found nothing that indicates I should have any concerns; in fact (overall) Davao City appears to be one of, if not THE safest cities in P.I. and I'll be "retiring" there in a year. I like that "modern features" of Davao City, which rates along side Manila and Cebu, but with less pollution, less crime, less traffic, less tourists and more. Now, other parts of Mindanao are "questionable" (as far as safety concerns), but I won't be going to those areas.

Dr. Laway, the reason why Filipino does not have as much fun going to the south as in Mindanao is that many foreigners had been kidnap in the past. Be careful " snake lives in every forest."✌️

@@piacash5216 Kidnapping is mostly confined to the Manilla area these days, it's mostly of people involved in criminality. There was a Kidnapping in Zamboanga del Sur in 2019 of a British man. The most recent Kidnapping was in Manilla MANILA, Philippines - Eight transgender women who are members of a kidnapping syndicate preying on foreigners in Metro Manila were arrested by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the CIDG reported yesterday. The suspects, belonging to the Warla group, targeted 14 foreigners since 2018, receiving an average of P200,000 to P500,000 from each of the victims, according to the CIDG. While it is unusual that a kidnap group is composed of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, their motive is also strange, police said. An investigation by the CIDG revealed that the suspects amassed P4.2 million from their activities, which they used to fund their sex reassignment surgery. “In all my time with anti-kidnapping, this is the first time we encountered a group of transgenders,” CIDG director Brig. Gen. Ronald Lee said in a press conference. Three of the suspects - Dewie Shaine Garcia, Charlemagne Vargas and Christian Paredes - surrendered to police after they were found to be connected to the kidnapping of 58-year-old Taiwanese businessman Michael Lee in Barangay BF Homes, Parañaque on Sept. 3. He was rescued last Sept. 7. Police found out that Garcia, Vargas and Paredes were in possession of five GCash numbers where the victim’s friends deposited P308,000 in r

Dennis here compared to davao foreigners how much more of a minority it seems in the general santos area i have made it a point many times so that the locals now that i am not a tourist on a vacation or just visiting not a government official diplomat any of the sort that i live here and day retired auto worker does not really make much more than the average filipino i would tell them that they watch too much television hahaha yes and statistically speaking i think it is safe probably safer here than in the larger cities of course in the united states i had to ignore many friends naysayers and negativity about my coming here it was as if many thought i would get killed were kidnapped or something of the sort as soon as i got here evil my filipino family seemed to paranoid and i thought were overreacting. I do go to the same places where i have become known to the locals knowing i would be less likely to have any surprises information regarding my being here spreads quickly i would think and what would be said is that he's not rich has a family to feed and rent to pay and has no rich family members so there would be nothing in it for you to bother him. That's all for now later alligator. LOL

I also think that the press do not report everything .I have been going to mindanao for over 5 years now and i have never experienced or witness violence , people from DAVAO are really proud of their citys reputation for being safe

The problem lies in the infrastructure, mostly corruption, and also the mindset of the criminals and the type of crime. If you compare LA to marawi, you may have similar chances of becoming a victim in both, but in LA all they want is your money, watch, car, whatever is on you at the time, then the situation is over versus if you run into a real problem in mindanao, it's most likely a life or death situation. That's the main difference. Statistically, in the US, kidnappings and violence from religious extremism do not exist. In LA, you will not be killed randomly because you are a westerner and I dont like your country and you picked the wrong day to come out shopping because today marked the 50th anniversary of some crazy Islamic revolution. Also, when you run into a problem in LA,, law enforcement can be trusted and will help you, versus in mindanao, the police generally don't give a sh1t, will not investigate until embassy gets involved, and the corruption is also very rampant and widespread. So in other words if you are Annie from London traveling solo through mindanao and you run into a problem, you're fcked. Lol. I would never EVER travel to most of mindanao without having a trusted family/friends in that region. I have a friend that lives in northern mindanao right now and they said do not come. Ever since duterte left, crime levels have been rising very quickly.

They still are there. Another problem is the NPA, however as they extort money and the tourists bring in money they make sure not to disturb tourism so it's rather a problem if settling down in an area where the NPA is influential (which can be quite hidden in the first place).

I advise that nobody should travel outside of the major tourist areas in London unless absolutely necessary. But you can go anywhere in Davao City, I wouldn't walk in the slums at night, but that's just common sense in any city. London slums are not safe any time of day.
