Is Multiple Sclerosis Hereditary? What’s my kids risk of MS?
The risk of Multiple Sclerosis in the general population depends on geography. Where I live in the midwestern United States that risk is about 1:700.
The risk for the first degree relative (parent, sibling, or child) to get MS if you have it is about 1-3%. That's a lot higher than the risk to the general population, but still quite low in absolute numbers.
There is some data to support certain environmental factors that might probably worsen then genetic risk to develop MS in children of people with MS. These factors include morbid obesity, tobacco exposure including second hand smoke, and low/ low normal vitamin D3. A PwMS considering pregnancy and raising a child is encouraged to discuss each of these factors with their own MS provider.
(Please remember that as science advances, the information above will certainly become outdated in the future I'm sure)

My son is 14 and recently asked me if he would get MS. I told him that he might be a little more likely than others but that we give him vitamins and try and eat right to help lower the chances. He was very concerned and I am not sure he was convinced.

Based on current research, he can likely raise his risk by smoking, having low levels of vitamin D and by being morbidly obese.

I was always told it was not hereditary. My dad had it. His mother had ALS, my dad died at 41 from MS and my younger brother was dx at 19 and died from MS at 40. I was dx with MS at age 32 and hanging in for almost 20 years with it.

There are rare clusters of families like yours with multiple first and 2nd degree family members developing MS. This is really rare however. I reminds us that "one size doesn't fit all" and that we still have lots to learn. What is NOT rare is finding other family members (including 2nd and 3rd degree relatives) with other types of autoimmunity (.like thyroid, MG, DM, SLE, RA, psoriasis, etc). This is very common when taking a family history from a PwMS.

I wish you were in Michigan. My son, age 10 will be seen soon for most of the symptoms you describe as MS related. I like the way you relay the information and really treat the patient as a whole. I hope we get that with Dr. Iqbal Allarakhia.

On my paternal side, me, my father, his twin sisters, 3 cousins, a great aunt and great uncle have MS. All are RRMS except for me and my dad. We are PPMS. I also have 2 cousins on mom's side who are RR. I was diagnosed New Years Eve 2016 so all of my family were together. After my appt at Cleveland Clinic, I just walked into the family house and said, "well, I have the family curse", lol.

Aaron Boster MD I love your videos so much. I love learning about what I am fighting and your videos make it so easy. My neuro recently suggested getting a 4th opinion with you because my case is very complicated due to me having Pyoderma, lupus and MS along with other junk and meds tend to cause PG flares. I see Sheppard at Oak now, but before I saw Stone and Willis at Mellen. All three of them said exact same tx plan after discussing with my rheumatologist and dermatologist so I told him I doubted you would do anything different, but how great I think you are. Thanks so much for what you do.

its crazy that my mom and all of her kids have developed ms and after watching this video I thin its spot on to why we all did ... expecully me as I was a mobedly obessid child I was 405 lb by 14 with high cholesterol so spot on lol and both my parents smoked and sad to say me and my sisters all smoked at young ages me expecully taking my first drag at 8 ..... crazy that all of these things probably really did contribute to us all developing it plus growing up in colroaod where in the sunner the uv is only 6 at times so very little high dose of sun lol even being closer cuz of mountains

Hmmm... I read that if your father has or had ms.. And your his daughter.. You have a much higher change of inheriting the disease. Is that true doctor?

That's not how I would encourage you to think about it. Remember, avoiding tobacco, staying physically fit and avoiding obesity, supplementing low vitamin D may lower an individuals risk to develop MS! Things to consider!
