Well when SHTF happens the authorities are likely to be too busy with more important things than with people that haven’t got a license unless you’re doing something really stupid like jamming up frequencies they’re using for emergency purposes (disclaimer not advice)

PMR 446 Is NOT licence free band. Its the use of equipment meeting specific requirements that exempts the user from licencing. Mobiles ARE permitted on 446 and antenna does NOT need to be fixed but must comply with ETSI and a tx ERP of 500mw

LPD433 (low power device 433 MHz) is a UHF band in which licence free communication devices are allowed to operate in some regions. The frequencies correspond with the ITU region 1 ISM band of 433.050 MHz to 434.790 MHz, and operation is limited to CEPT countries. So there are two license free bands, one 446MHz and one one 433MHz? Which is more popular?

I see the same question appearing on many forums so clarification is needed. As a side note, I think you need to alter your mic position. Most of the time it sounds weak and picks up echo. When you moved your head to the right, it sounded much better. Check the pick-up pattern as it sounds quite narrow.

Hi, I’m looking for a small radio with small antenna as it’s to go inside a suit pocket. It needs good distance and receive power as it’s for built up areas. I use PMR radio at the moment but the signal is too weak. I use this to contact my other driver in my wedding car business. I usually radio him a couple of miles from the church to check they are ready for the brides arrival. What make and model would you recommend please? I’m happy to pay for a licence etc. Need to be legal. Cheers love this channel.

In work 2 warehouses I have a quad set up of Motorola Talkabout t82 extreme for myself and staff which are fine for distances of a few hundred meters with LOS or the signal penetrating the building. Anywhere outside the 220x120 m site there is just no signal behind the site walls on the main road or even 50 m from the site I’m fairly sure I’ve them set up to work most efficient. From you vids I have learned uhf pmr 446 are limited to 500mw. And cannot use them with repeaters. My question is if I bought a more powerful in wattage baofeng could I use it for amateur radio but still use it to talk to staff on pmr 446.? Also regarding the Motorola Talkabout t82 extreme does it matter what channel and sub channel we work on since power of the all the radios are always the same at 500mw and fixed antennas ? Hi mon ami came upon your channel by accident I once bought a legal hand held C.B.. radio only ever got white noise even on receive. So I then went out and bought a "bench set" same result nothing, zero, zilch. So I chucked them into the back of my lock up and that was that. However, I saw you mention Network Radio and Zello but I cannot find anything online about it other than reviews of kit etc. I do not understand if you need a ham license? how do you register with a moderator?, If you don't need a Ham Radio license how do you avoid straying into areas you shouldn't? All the information out there at the moment is aimed at experts who may wish to try N.R. but they already know what it is all about there is nothing for the novice. Also what little is out there is American anyway where different rules apply. I have to say you have made me quite keen to have a go but for the first time ever the internet has nothing on the subject. I even tried Amazon to buy a book on N.R. to get me started but there aren't any, now that is a first. There is a gap for your self to write a booklet on the subject for the complete beginner if there is the growing interest people say then there is a gap in the market for such information and I work in sales and marketing so can spot an opportunity when I see one.

It's not always as easy as that anymore. :( Trying to find a local club, that's actually local and not a +20 mile trip, is something that a lot of people are struggling with now. The closest club to me is 12miles away, definitely not fun if you're stuck using public transport. They only do foundation training, and don't have their own examination centre, so the closest exam centre is 22 miles away. In my local area, there are plenty of people on CB radio, with a lot of them unable to make the travelling to get to a 'local' club even though they're said they'd love to get into ham radio and/or have already purchased better quality ham radio gear for use on the CB bands. Unfortunately, there are a lot of idiots on our local CB channels that spoil it for everyone so there is even more incentive for people to get their license, if only they could. Shame.

In the USA in order to talk on HAM radio you need a license which you need to take a test. There is GMRS which stands for "General Mobile Radio Service" which also need a license. But GMRS license is real simple there is no test for it and all you have to do it pay for the license fee which is good for 10 years. In the USA at least only FRS & MURS bands are free. But you will be limited to using those CHEAP bubble pack radios you tend to find at retail stores like Walmart. Cause they have limited power and have a non-removable antenna.

@simonj48
@simonj48 5 жыл бұрын
There are lots of sides to ham radio, some people like antennas, some enjoy the math, others enjoy building electronics be it the linear psu, amps or radios, others forgo all the traditional ham radio and are purely digital mode/psk31 etc using a computer. If you have access to a local club, join the club , use their gear for a bit and get a feel for what you want to do. You might find you don't really want or need the expensive icom and while learning you may just enjoy a 'throw away' radio like the uv5r. Ham radio can be as cheap as £5 from china for a pre-built CW box, it's not massively powerful as it's designed for the QRP community but will work contacts. A little more expensive and you can dig into the likes of the uv5r for less than £20 at times on ebay as well. But if you basically want an icom 7200, unfortunately you're probably going to have to pay that price if it's what you want from your rig, its a lot of money for a rig you might find you don't even like using after trying others, an alternative may be something like the still expensive but cheaper yaesu ft-891 both back a lot of features you'll probably not (fully) use as a foundation licensee anyway.

Hey m8. just starting My foundation course in ham. A long time back I seem to remember CB was Licences, until it was dropped. Well My option is that when Cb was regulated people just lost interest me too because of morons, and lack of knowledge. 446 radio in terms of range are good for kids at a power of 0.5 watts. Now CB has had a update with euro frequencies added to the radios. Yet No licence so it is still not regulated in the UK, so users do just what they want. Foul mouth kids and adults using the airwaves with daft callsigns.. If there was a regulated course for CB , who would take it?. I have taken a new way of looking at radio. Any one can buy a mobile phone, fine becouse it is a Phone. Now radio is a different matter, with the little knowledge to become a radio ham, and know how it works, it , we understand what problems can happen and how it effect other users. Its a bit like driving a car without a licence , the driver could crash due to lack of knowledge.

The US is even worse. They combined FRS/GMRS so GMRS is now license free at 2w or less. Over 2w you still need a license. To make matters worse: GMRS allows base stations, mobiles and repeaters up to 50w. Good luck trying to find a 50 watt radio that is LEGAL on GMRS (cannot be programmed outside of the band). Chances are pretty HIGH if you hear someone on GMRS with a 50w output it's illegal. MURS is nice, nobody on it, very quiet, don't have to trip over 10 year Olds playing cops and robbers, it's VHF, 5 channels, 1w max output. No repeater access though. It DOES utilize a couple of old Business Band channels , but grandfathered licensed users of those channels are rare. Downside is hospital pagers, garage door openers, driveway lights and such use MURS frequencies. Again, you run into the "type accepted" issue. No CCR's are accepted for MURS. So you can buy a $300 Moto to be "license free" or you can take your chances with a Baofeng. Neither GMRS nor MURS allows DMR (not even Tier I). There is also the little known 902-928 ISM band that is license free. Upside: they are digital (not DMR), very rare interference. Downside: limited to 1w, no repeaters, expensive radios. Caveat: If you use your Baofeng within the limits set by the band (like MURS 2w output) it is highly unlikely that your regulatory authority will come looking for you. Wideband at 5w on PMR446, shouting across about half a dozen channels they might though 😉

The mic is a cardioid, and is accidentally not placed aiming at the mouth - as mentioned above, you hear it on the head turn towards the mic - easy to miss without wearing headphones. An oversight easily done. a 45 degree shift would have sorted it, but probably realised too late, and the only solution was to re-record the entire thing. It's not bad, just more room sound that usual.
