As a kitchen bath remodeling company, I always charged 50% up front, 40% at time of materials delivery/start of work, and 10% at end of project. I NEVER had one customer who didn't work with me. Reputation is far more valuable than you may think!

That sounds like your customers are the home owner. That is very different than the caller's situation, where his customers are these big construction companies.

I rate my customers on a good/better/best model. A good customer pays on time so 30 days(very low bar here); a better customer has a fair volume and pays on time; best customer is high volume, high margin, and pays when it leaves the door. There is no room, nor do I want to waste the time, for a customer that will not, at the very least, meet my definition of a good customer. I have been in business for 12 years and have only 1 customer in the best category with the rest being split almost evenly (using a dollar average) between good and better.

A reputable company asking 50% down is reasonable. It pays for the material that they have to pay for within 30 days of purchase. They then layout the payroll funds to build it before asking for payment. They have to trust they will get paid. So trust goes both ways. Take the time to research a company before signing a contract. Research their license with the state regulation board to see if there are any sanctions against their license. Also request certificate of insurance WITH YOU named as the certificate holder. It must be for general liability AND workers comp if they have any employees. Make sure the dates of coverage on the certificate are for the dates they will be on site. If close to expiring, as a cert holder, the insurance company should send a new one with new dates. If they don't pay their insurance premium, you will be notified because you are a cert holder.

Yep, I work in window installs and if the customer wants to pay cash it’s half up front for us also. We can be more flexible with the downpayment if they finance, but as a follower of Dave I try to encourage cash when possible.

Well is she going to give her other employees the same PTO? You can’t do that because that’s not fair to the other employees and those people are going to feel like they were stolen from and leave

No construction job of any size is going to pay 50% up front. Even if the people you are working with are inclined to do so, there is no way they will be allowed to do so by company policy. Just increase the price 10% to cover the additional cost on having 120 day terms. No confrontation and the customer’s accounting team thinks they are coming out ahead by having such long terms when in actuality they are losing more to you.

Incorrect. The customers slow paying are acting in bad faith. That man should place a mechanics lien on every job in case they try this dishonest slow pay tactics. Many large subcontractors require 50% upfront or the sub offers job financing if they can’t pay as a condition of the contract. This caller needs to have net payment terms and interest charges clearly outlined in his contracts with liens involved. I’ve owned and built 3 service/trade companies and we made fantastic money and never let bad clients try to cheat us with slow pays

Personally, i think its pretty disgusting to fire someone for needing time off for fertility treatments. Employee's will lie to employers in this situation become they rightly believe theyll be fired for being honest about how much time theyll need off. I would just coach this person to be more upfront and work with them to find a solution for the extra time off, maybe just earlier alerts of what days theyll be gone so the business can plan appropriately and swap around shifts if needed for a couple months. It really shouldnt be that hard

What is he talking about with inflation? Inflation is dropped to about 3% over the last year. How much better can that get? Much of today’s inflation was caused by two major factors one of course is Covid and the other is the gigantic deficit spending that took place under my president, Donald Trump. He increase the national debt in for short years, heading towards $9 trillion.
