I was waiting for you this morning and I'm really glad you showed up. You and your videos are my favorite part of waking up on Sunday mornings! I've been coping with PTSD and chronic fatigue for a couple of years instead of living out my own adventures so your videos have been very special to me while I'm healing. During this time I've been living vicariously through your adventures, although I'm hoping that the current medical help I'm getting is going to change all that. Until I'm fully back up and raring to go though, your Sunday morning videos are my favorite adventures. Stay safe my friends.

Fascinating video! It's nice there are some foods one can eat without feeling guilty about the method of farming, and even better that this particular method doesn't just "not damage" the local ecosystem, but actually makes it better!
@jwenting
@jwenting 2 жыл бұрын
yes and no. It does kinda create a monoculture of other water creatures, especially those who are either symbiotic with or prey on the muscles. That's why you see that one species of fish there and pretty much only that species. A species that probably outcompetes everything else in those waters for food. I'm not concerned about farming in general. Smart farmers know how to manage the land in such a way as to be sustainable. Stupid farmers go bust or get shut down quickly.
@TheBeaker59
@TheBeaker59 2 жыл бұрын
@@jwenting Not sure what you mean by monoculture. Because most reefs in the right tidal zone in that area are mussel beds including the sea floor the the snapper were in decline before mussel farms and are now coming back (a long way from before but improving). The diversity of fish life and just general biomass across the species range in a mussel farm is mindblowing. Green Lip Mussel farming is an ecological miracle maybe not the only one nor does it solve all problems but it it goes along way for the habitats it does work in.
@jwenting
@jwenting 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBeaker59 most other fish and shellfish disappear from the area when the farms move in. It's the same with large scale fish farming, nothing lives there any longer except the farmed fish and a few opportunistic species that thrive on the leftovers.
@TheBeaker59
@TheBeaker59 2 жыл бұрын
@@jwenting You may well be right in some farms but not these believe me. I guess the issue with fish farms is you have to add food for the fish which adds nutrients (pollution) whereas a mussel farm (like all shellfish farms) actually removes nutrients as they feed on the nutrients in the water naturally or usually unnatural nutrients like farm runoff. Maybe they could do both together in a way that offsets each other.

And that's just one way to do it. In the Netherlands the mussels (different species, bottom feeders) are grown in horizontal beds positioned on the sea floor of tidal flats. Flooded at high tide, at low tide they can be inspected or harvested.

One of the best things about living here in NZ is that every supermarket has a bin full off live mussels for around $3/kg. Have a great recipe for smoked marinated mussels, trouble is you need to buy 5 time as much as you need for the final because they get eaten at every stage of the process.

I wish you had more clips of your sail to New Zealand when things got really rough and dangerous. No sugar coating, just raw fear, rough seas, howling wind, hysteria and grit. That is what sailing is, not always smooth and what people who are planning on actually buying a boat need to see and learn from. Sailing is like real life on land, sometimes you just take a beating no matter how much you plan ahead to avoid troubles.

I live in the South Island of NZ. You probably haven't watched too much TV since you've been here but we have a weekly show called Country Calendar which show cases various farming and agricultural things going on with everyday New Zealanders throughout the country. Watching this I felt like I was watching a Country Calendar episode from TVNZ ! You two are simply awesome at what you do. Been following you for quite some years now ... totally hooked 👍 10 out of 10 my friends. Have loved the way you've given the rest of the world a little taste of NZ

Thanks so much for this. New Zealand Greensheel Mussells was a client of mine in China many years ago. So great to see their operations.

Aah, growing up in NZ...When I was a kid down at the yacht club in Wellington, we used to get mussels off the rocks, put them on some sheet iron over a fire amongst the rocks..when they opened up,they were ready....delicimo.

Nikki and Jason, I have been following you since you bought the boat. I also follow many other sailing channels and you are "by FAR" one of the most informative in the videos you put out. I also wait for your videos every Sunday. I hope to see much of Gone with the Wynn in the future.

That was extremely interesting! I grew up working on fishing boats in SoCal. I could almost feel the salty air. We had plenty of fish also and all kinds of sea food. Thanks 🙏 for sharing!

Thanks for another great video. I lived in New Zealand for three years and bought green mussels in our supermarket in New Plymouth. Excellent food, and so were the smoked eels.

Fascinating, interesting, intriguing! And I have to commend you for finding a way to make the advert fully relevant to the content of the video! Also: thanks for your perspective and research! Made things very relevant even to a landlubber somewhere in Europe.

I grew up in New Orleans eating raw oysters on the half-shell. Next time make a cocktail sauce with ketchup, some horseradish, Worcestershire & a squirt of lemon juice. Dip oysters/muscles in sauce and enjoy.

Must admit, I have been avoiding those kind of mussels thinking they would be coming from polluted areas, thanks to you, I will be seeking them again.
