With Buffalo Trace having so much of their best selling products coming out of the same mashbill, what makes them different? Are they different? Do they taste different?
BRT is getting a Buffalo Trace Mashbill Analysis to help you better understand where these bourbons come from.

DISCLAIMER: I screwed up and left Thomas H Handy out of this list. It is non age stated, but rumored to be 6 years old. It is cask strength and the MSRP is 119.99. I also left off Double Eagle Very Rare which is 20 years, old proof 90/new proof 101, MSRP 1999.99. Maybe my largest crew up of the podcast ever...I left off the high rye rye whiskey mashbill that they make EHT Rye with. So EHT Rye is not the same mashbill as sazerac, THH, Saz 18, or VWFRR. I have been told that ER is not a batched product, but that the automatic bottling line processes one barrel at a time. Since there is mingling of whiskey in the lines they removed the single barrel designation. Lastly, the slide before ETL, Blantons, RHF, etc says Mashbill 1, and it is actually Mashbill 2. Sorry!

@@BourbonRealTalk We were just at Buffalo Trace about two weeks ago and were able to get EH Taylor $45, Eagle Rare $40, and Blanton's $65. A friend of mine brought some Weller special reserve to our poker game last friday and all four of those bottles were outstanding. I wish the EH taylor and the Weller were more available and at BT gift shop pricing..

Great show. Love the closing message. Not a huge fan of the way Buffalo trace does their lineups. It’s confusing and I believe the individual branding under the parent company is part of what leads to unwarranted hype, overpurchasing, and huge secondary market markups. Thank you for helping to clarify what brands use the same mashbills and the difference between the aging and proofs for each brand. Buffalo Trace could consolidate a lot of those brands under one with different series/release names and make this a lot less confusing but I’m glad we have someone like you to help. Kudos! Keep up the good work good sir!

I love hearing the MSRP because I don't think I've ever seen a single Buffalo Trace product at MSRP in my area. I would LOVE to get some of these for those prices. Heck I just paid $60 two weeks ago for a bottle of Eagle Rare because it was the best price I'd seen in weeks. The only bottle of Weller 12 I've seen anywhere was $350.

Wow - a powerful ending to the video!! As for the video in general, this is one of the most informative videos on bourbon that I've ever seen!! I have tried some of these from this video and Buffalo Trace is one of my most favorite distillers. The MSRPs you quote surprise me, either due to my area or my retailers ability to mark up. For example, the Buffalo Trace bottle you said had a MSRP of $20 something and I paid $50 something!! I couldn't find it and when I did they said that was the price! Oh well. I enjoyed it. That is what counts. But, yowzah.
@BourbonRealTalk
@BourbonRealTalk Жыл бұрын
There are a lot of things that affect price like shipping, taxes, wholesaler/retailer margin, but if you bought a bottle of regular BT at $50 that means the store is marking up rare bottles more than they need to. We call them price gouge stores. It sucks because customers don't know that the distillery isn't getting any of the extra money. BT made around $10 on that bottle. The wholesaler made something like $4.25, and the retailer was supposed to make $5.75, but instead is making $35.75 and affecting brand perception without the brand owner getting any benefit. I have a series of videos on this.

Whiskey after habanero sauce - same with a lot of Thai and Indian dishes. Any food that will make your tongue switch on the fire alarm gets distance between it and my bourbons. 🥵 Just wanted to say I always appreciate your sign off. Love this video. Great summary of the line up. I also love the premise of the channel. So glad I found it. Btw the thing about whiskey in America having to be age stated if under 4 years, that only applies of it is labeled as "Straight" whiskey. Straight whiskey must be atleast 2 years old and, if it is under 4 years, must be age stated. So sorry if this was already said, I couldn't find it in the comments. Cheers and keep up the great work!
@BourbonRealTalk
@BourbonRealTalk Жыл бұрын
Correct. I have this standard post put together when people ask the question: There are three age statement laws in the US: 1. Straight is 2+ years, but 2-4 years requires an age statement and above 4+ years the age statement is optional. 2. Bottled In Bond is 4+ years and the age statement is optional 3. Anything labeled as whiskey in the US 0-4 years old must have an age statement, and above 4+ years the age statement is optional.

Just found your channel. Really enjoy your presentation. Really conversational. You clearly know bourbon and are really enjoyable to listen to. One suggestion, I would consider making a graphic with bottle name, proof, and price when you rattle that information off. I just think it's easier to digest all those numbers. Again, just a suggestion. A small thing to further enhance your production, that's already at a high level.

Fun fact about eagle rare used to say single barrel but blended 2 barrels. The regulators came knocking and they took the designation off the bottle
@BourbonRealTalk
@BourbonRealTalk 3 ай бұрын
I knew that, but I have never been able to understand the facts of the situation. The official story was that some bottles would get more than one barrel in them because the bottling lines had not been emptied. Given that they have several other single barrels it seems unlikely that they would have bought a separate bottling line to do ER that didn't comply.

I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for this one because I recently went to Buffalo Trace distillery for a tour. So much to see there. I’ve been looking for Blantons so long and can’t find it or I’m a minute to late to see the last bottle walk out the door. Being in the room where they bottle it and still can’t have one was a killer. When I drove home and a week later in stopped into my favorite liquor store. By the way I live in Michigan. There were two Blantons there. I walked out with both! I only felt good about that because it was just me in the store. Lol … Great videos thanks a lot!

Casks make all the difference, as a general statement about fine spirits overall. The new make spirit is a key aspect, truly. But the aging drives most all the final smell and taste. And aging occurs in the barrel. The quality of the barrel is THE over/under factor, ultimately, in the finished product. The mashbill is the first driver, the rest of the journey occurs over time in the cask.
@BourbonRealTalk
@BourbonRealTalk Жыл бұрын
The interesting thing is the casks are not different between weller and van winkle. They just have to taste them during aging to determine what to do with each barrel.

I have had many Poor Man's Pappy blends. They are good, but they don't taste like Pappy Van Winkle. They just don't have enough of that barrel char flavor that comes from years on a barrel.

Generally a large retailer will have a relationship with a wholesaler who is essentially a clearing house. The wholesaler in this scenario doesn't warehouse product or have field reps pushing it to the general public. They get it in from the producer and put it on a truck to the retailer. In exchange for this "pass through" service the wholesaler accepts a much lower margin, and in some cases a per case flat fee. It is essentially free money for the wholesaler because they bear none of the risk. The retailer and or the wholesaler then goes to a "producer" and offers them guaranteed volume with no risk, in exchange for a low profit margin. The producer either has to have their own liquid and be willing to sacrifice it, or they have to contract to get it from someone else. This all works because major producers have brand/price expectations in the market. Let's say 1792 is going to sell for around $30 a bottle, they could sell it and make their normal margin, but if gets put in a Chestnut Farms bottle that can be sold for $50. So the producer either maintains margin and the independent bottler allows it because the end line price allows for it, or the bottler works at a low margin for volume. So let's say in a normal situation a bottle was going to go from the producer at $30 to the wholesaler. The producer's cost is around $19.50. The wholesaler markes it up after adding in state taxes and shipping and they sell the bottle to retailers for around $48. Then the retailer marks it up and sells it to you at $64. In the "house brand" scenario the producer sells for $23 to the wholesaler instead of $30. The wholesaler sells the bottle to the retailer at $34 instead of $48. The retailer still sells the bottle for $64, but their margin is 47% instead of the 25% they would normally get. Hope that makes sense.

You forgot the Thomas Handy Rye. at around 130 proof it is quite interesting. I was in New Orleans over Christmas and bought some Sazerac handles for $39. 750 were 19. As an addendum concerning spicy food - it is also not a good idea to drink Bourbon THEN have very spicy food. I had "Thai hot" green curry after sampling several Bourbons and it hit me waaaaay harder than usual. I assume the liquor strips away the protective mucous lining and leaves you way more vulnerable. The back of my throat literally felt like it was on fire.

All of these prices were found by searching the websites of my local stores Spec's, Goody Goody, and Total Wine. If you want to verify you can go to those sites, change your location to 75078 zip code, and look them up. The ones I couldn't find, like the allocated items they don't put on the site, I googled their MSRP and tried to find a consistent number from the answers.
