Just like the great Kautilya said we need an uncorruptable, healthy in body and mind, and a visionary dictator, with powers like that of the US president. Make local bodies totally accountable wrt roads, housing, waste disposal and urban planning. Put education in central list. Make one man-one bank account-one social media id- one social id card.

The presidential system is better, no debate. the parliamentary system in a diverse country like India will lead to dysfunctional government and slowly lead to balkanization, which we can clearly see right now.

Just take a look at the dysfunction in the US. Presidential system results in really bad deadlocks that last years and decades. Parliamentary system is a lot more efficient.

Refreshing to see a discussion on this topic, otherwise the Parliament is held as some kind of sacred institution you can't debate on. Would be great if you can invite a pro- (semi) Presidential speaker

Our constitution is basically government of India act 1935+reservation ,even reservation have its origin from British communal award. We adopted all the colonial institutions we adopted their constitution their system even jurisprudence is Anglo-Saxon yet we call ourselves An independent country we only had transfer of power on August 15 1947 not independence. First India needs to gain mental independence then we should think about parliamentary democracy vs presidential. Both these systems will only subvert india if we don't decolonize.

Great discussion. The power of parliamentary democracy works when a minority government can work or is made to work. But in India where all parties are not equally concerned about the country but their own selfishness. In case of majority govt, opposition should be made more accountable for their position. Not sure how?

I think we should shift to the presidential system and change the parliament to the senate with minimal changes to the representation because the central bureaucracy is corrupt in our current system and the state governments are even worse also we can easily shift to the presidential system as the framework exists for it already

I think parliamentary democracy gives better representation to the states. It also prevents the deadlock between legislature and executive which we see in the usa.

"The Presidential System in America is a take off from the British system" That is a grossly incorrect assertion. The political system in the US has been modeled on the Roman political system. Look no further than one of the legislative body is the US being called the Senate! I've found Modi government appointees usually very well versed in their areas of expertise. Maybe this appointee is a an exception that underscores that rule. Then again, this may also be an indication of how low the standards of the judicial system in India have slipped that this appointee was the best available! Disappointed!

I think having a more parliamentary and more federalism is a luxury, which one can enjoy when you are high income, so to say developed nation... till you reach a certain standard of society, to handle a unruly non law abiding population (like us) we need some serious stick at most times.... the andolan kaaris say we support and are saving democracy and parliamentary system , but themselves don't want to follow current parliament and centre policies.... you have right to put your dissent but not right to disrupt country's operations and become a hooligan and then slowly become a classic indian political entity. .

His talk about governance was all about history of governance in the west. When will we stop looking at ourselves from a eurocentric point of view. If we have to get a solution , it has to come from us , but we do not even want to look at the governance models in our history.

Parliamentary democracy is better. Even more so for India than it was for the UK. The working principle of collective leadership of the Union Cabinet, with all being equal and the PM only being the first among equals is ideal framework to reflect India's pluralistic democracy and society. Every sub-culture in India is indeed equal to every other culture, any pre-eminence being no more than an operational convenience. Beyond this, the quality of MPs and leaders being thrown up will decide how well the system will work. In the Presidential system the representative character will be much less easily captured.
