It is a form of training. You get more experience of the way others drive, or should drive, and get top recognise developing hazards much quicker.

even though passed my driving test back in 94', I watch these types of accident video's for better defensive driving, as better to experience it whereby you aren't physically the person driving, but also how to improve your outcome if something like that was to happen to yourself while driving, and to react sooner to a possible danger, as when I passed my driving test the word "stop" was the only experience you needed for passing a driving test. there wasn't any such hazard perception test like how driving instructors want it to be done whereby marked sooner than having to physically react or have an accident, but to more the early warning signs and reacting to them to make the drive a lot safer. and would fail the hazard perception for clicking way too early, and not clicking a 2nd time when it is actually marked.

Inclusive if you have your own dash camera, after drive check it out. I suggest have front and rear camera. Really help to study your driving and improve it

I was the first person in Scotland to do Pass Plus in the early 2000s, I started it 3 months after passing my Driving test. The Government wanted to make a song and dance about it, so I had to go to Drumnadrochit in my 10year old, beat up Mrk3 Ford Escort, and drive round the town with a camera man, ITV news reporter, police inspector and lady from the DVLA in the back who was going absolutely bonkers in panic that I was driving round the town, 3 months into driving with all these people in my car... lol good times Anyway, yeah I would recommend doing it as soon after your test.

My instructor literally said to me, run your insurance quotes with and without and see if it's markedly cheaper. If it ain't, don't bother. Because we've covered the overwhelming majority of what the course entails on our lessons.

You are joking.., right! Once you pass your test you are only part way to being a good driver. Any advanced training is worth doing to improve yours and everyone’s safety on public roads.

I just want to say thanks for all the grate content on this channel. Because of all the helpful info and advice over the last 10 ish months along with my own instructors advice. I passed my test just a month ago 1st time. and got my first car just last week. I'm not doing pass plus but I am having extra lessons with my fantastic instructor. Pacifically motorways. As regular lessons didn't cover them. Even though now I've passed I'll still be watching this channel as there is always something to improve on.

Thanks Richard, just passed my test today on first attempt with 2 minors. Only had 26 hours to driving lessons from scratch but probably watched 50 hours worth of your videos and they had more impact than my lessons to be honest. Cheers and kudos, what you do here makes a difference

My instructor told me it wasn’t worth it, and offered lessons on whatever I was worried about instead. I was mostly anxious about parking in my car (because the way she taught me didn’t really seem to work well and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong) and overtaking on the motorway (I was always itching to move left). So she took me on a lesson to park and drive down the motorway and that was it! She told me she’d done all kinds of things to help her students like car washes, drive thrus and even driving with them to see family when they were newly passed to build confidence. I don’t know whether an approach like that isn’t better for the wallet and the students skills. It’s a shame there isn’t instructors like mine everywhere!

Appreciate the honesty in the vid - a lot of what you said lines up with what I found. Good to know the reasoning behind why it doesn't reduce insurance premiums by much - makes sense now that you've said it. I did complete it a couple months ago - was a good confidence boost and got me thinking about different situations that I ordinarily don't meet. That said I agree with your suggestion of just doing a couple hours with an instructor on areas you are weaker in as its a better use of your time and money - wish I had seen this video before doing the pass plus! In particular handling parallel parking in tough situations, joining high speed sections from awkward scenarios (can't find a gap type things) and driving in unfamiliar territories and knowing which lane to get into is probably the most useful things to learn - not sure why the pass plus doesn't cover these honestly. Perhaps even discussing how to approach driving on the opposite side of the road in other countries...something I am now facing as I try to avoid the muscle memory of getting into the left hand lane.

I did it as (at least back in 2016) Cumbria Council paid for Pass Plus via a voucher so I didn't have to pay for it. It was foggy the entire way along the A590 and going up the M6 so we didn't get all that far but at least I got experience of driving on the motorway, in fog!

While unrelated to this video, I like to thank you for your expertise and top notch video lessons. I have just come back from Sidcup, London where I had my driving test. While not an absolutely new driver, I jad not driven in UK and thats in over 10years, afer about 9.5hr of driving lesson and watching so much of your videos I have Passed with 2 minors (it had to be pointed out I guess but they were Awareness/Planning - I missed the right turn towards C.London but came back to it after turning round at the next BeefEater... AND a Junction Observation, which I am not sure what it is but I think its when I waited too long to jump into a space before the next set of cars blocked me in and had to wait for them). Richard, thank you for your making these videos and your approach to teaching, the way breakdown of the theory into practicals and yor clarity is second to none.

I got a bit excited when you said that it was subsidised in Hampshire, where I'm based, though upon inspection that is only for *young* drivers (aged 17-24). As a 40 year old learner, I'm a wee bit old for that.

The vastly lower insurance rates you (and I as a 50+) get compared to the younger ages who have extortionate rates will make up for the relatively small subsidy on Pass Plus. The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) and RoSPA (Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents) are much older charity versions of the DSA scheme and can give you a certificate too but you will be tested, often by volunteer current and retired Road Traffic Police. I agree with Richard. If you are willing to pay for stuff you are not confident with like motorways then it's far better to spend money on those lessons than any of the above courses.

@@Drew-Dastardly I'm not sure the age is as big a factor for those who have learned later. Have started looking at cars and insurance and for me, if I pass and become anew driver, the annual premium quoted is about 1/3rd the price of the vehicle.

@@simonmeadows7961 Yes insurance is insane. I live in a crime ridden city. Mine is £160 per year even after a motoring conviction (that lapsed after 5 years). My car is a 20 year old 2.0 litre. I've never made a claim in those years it has to be said. As a first car I would suggest a 10+ year older

I've been driving since I was 17. I'm 29 now. I still think that when I properly learnt to drive, was during Pass Plus. All of the tips on that course I still use in every day driving today. Over 10 years on! It's one of the best things you can do in my opinion.

Sounds like you also learned to drive/passed your test in Reading? 🙌🏻 I was in the same situation having never driven on the motorway, country lanes, after dark etc. and so asked my instructor to do Pass Plus right after passing my test to cover these points, plus my somewhat challenging out-of-town commute route, as well as multi-storey parking and driving in inclement weather. In the 6 hours he was more than happy to concentrate on the topics I needed the most (motorways & driving after dark) and to just cover the rest in theory. Getting the certificate did pretty much nothing for my insurance premium but that extra bit of tuition with an instructor gave me a major confidence boost to go on to drive alone and in different/tricky situations, so if the cost is not a concern personally I'd recommend it. ✌🏻

country lanes are important to learn in one sense, but only if you are using them a lot, but as most cars are getting wider, even the 3/4 road width lanes now are leathal in a modern car, as no way to avoid those who think of themselves when driving a deadly weapon, and stuff the world. I would personally say motorway lessons are better for your future driving, as I personally use the motorway a lot during the year. and also where a lot of danger can happen, not to put you off or anything, but think there was a social media post somewhere a year or so ago that everyone should be doing 30 mph until the end of the slip road. which then means you are 1/2 the speed of an hgv, and even less than 1/2 the speed of any other traffic on the motorway. whereby you should get up to speed as quickly as possible and then adjust speed to match the traffic speed on the motorway as takes a car less distance to slow down than it does to speed up to motorway speed especially a first car on a tight budget. but doing less speed than an hgv then the hgv cannot slow down as quickly or as safely as you would expect a car to do, so avoid forcing a truck to change speed or direction at all costs.

Fast driving on motorways is the easy part. Just by asking your question, you are exactly the sort of person who should be driving a car A country road is basically the same as a city road - except, the "walls" are made of plant material. All you have to be aware of is that there may be a stationary tractor around the next blind corner, or even an animal (very rare, these guys have more sense then humans) If you take things easy, you'll be fine Even be prepared to do 30mph or lower ... even though the official speed limit for a country road is 60mph

This channel is a massive help on my driving journey, and has given me a level of confidence I wouldn’t have gained otherwise. My main issue right now is missing road signs, probably because I’m too focussed on the road ahead as a newbie. I also have monocular vision which might feed into the problem as my distance judgement is somewhat impaired. Are you able to make a vid with tips on how to never miss road signs? Speed instructions are the ones I struggle with the most. Thanks so much.

I did the Pass Plus way back when. It was a good day out driving around. My instructor was really good, broke the day up nicely, and when we stopped, we discussed how I was doing, and what we were going to do next. It made no difference on my insurance whatsoever, as my insurance company had never heard of it. Weather wise, I was “lucky”. We had low sun on the way back, rain, hail, and some snow 😳 Also managed a fair bit of night driving. As you said, probably best to do it soon after passing your test, if you’re going to do it. Also, I have gone on to do several RoSPA assessments/courses, and blue lights with regular reassessments. I’m not perfect, and always open to constructive criticism of my driving.

I passed my Institute Advanced Motorists course and test and it made no difference to my my insurance premiums. It’s supposed to help avoid accidents and help you anticipate other road users better, but it doesn’t stop other road users crashing into you. In the last 14 years I’ve been involved in 7 non-blameworthy collisions such is the poor driving standards of today and the last 20 years. These days learner drivers are not taught how to drive, they’re taught how to pass their driving test. I learnt to drive 52 years ago, passed my test 1st attempt. My first driving lesson was round West End in London around Hyde Park Corner with black cabs and buses coming in all directions. Hyde Park Corner was and still probably is a free for all. The car I learnt in a Ford Anglia without synchromesh 1st gear.

Nice without syncromesh. Super. I have a honda jazz , 82 HP, I do double clutching downshifting to overtake. Nice you learn how to drive without syncromesh. About advancing driving yea, the gov must push more the insurance to give the incentive to drives keep learning. Not only advancing driving what about anti-skid driving , motorway etc.

The course may not have reduced your premiums, nor prevented others from crashing into you, but your driving would have definitely improved from the time you took your test. One theory of mine is that the poorer the condition of the car, then the less considerate the driver will be of other vehicles. Additionally, the higher the spec of the vehicle, the more likely I find that the driver is going to be full of self-importance and not give a dam about others.

I will be doing the Pass Plus mainly for the extra training for myself...not fussed about the piece of paper at the end! However, after listening to you I am now wondering whether extra lessons as a new driver would be more beneficial.. Thanks again!! 😊

I did Pass Plus when I passed in the early 2000s and it basically made no difference to my premiums. However, it made a huge difference to my driving ability as back then we did no motorway driving during normal lessons, nor did we do longer drives. I was also able to analyse my minor faults and other feedback from the examiner's test notes. It was quite a useful experience.

The first time I drove after passing my test was driving a 4wd and Twin-axle caravan to Snowdonia from the peak-district including Motorways and narrow country roads! That definitely helped my driving confidence afterwards!

You said it as it really is. Main reason i did it and encouraged my girlfriend to do it was the motorway and out of town driving. Sadly no discount on course or insurance due to age but its good to have that extra experience in early days. Really, it should just be part of driving lessons rather than extra. But what can i say, they no longer teach turn in the road maneuver because its not on the test. Nether reversing around the corner

I'm an experienced driver drove for over 10 years in the past (and over 120 thousand kms). Needed to convert my own country's license to a UK one so took 10 hours on the wrong side of the road (only joking) and passed the first time of course, but with 7 minors. The examiner told me afterwards that it would be good if I took the "driving improvement course" whatever that was and I nodded and said yeah sure even though I didn't actually intend to. Just wanted him to give me my pass slip and go away. Am I as experienced as he is, no. But I am experienced enough to know that out of the 7 minors he gave me about half are warranted, and the other half is bollocks. The warranted bits were due to: me not knowing the car, and the test nerves. Yes I had nerves even for an experienced driver for different reasons than a new driver would. These errors I wouldn't have done if it wasn't a test. Moral of the story; the UK driving test process is hardly perfect, no matter what your circumstances are. AND, because of this unpredictability, examiners can be intimidating even for experienced drivers.

Thank you for this Richard, 4 of my Grandsons were born within 6 months of each other, guess what we're half way through now! I knew they wouldn't get cheaper car insurance with it. But they can watch this clip and decide whether they want to go through it or not. It's difficult here, Peebles is a long way from the M8 or the M74. But we do what we can with them. More sitting there saying you're doing very well Son, thinking "oh God we're going to die!" Argyll and Bute just think Ah Gyle and you won't go far wrong!

I did pass plus, and it gave me a bonus year of ncb from the first time I insured my car, but I was 27 at time and I did notice a difference in premiums

As someone who grew up in the highlands of Scotland, without any complicated streets, roundabouts, or motorways/dual carriageways, pass plus was an exceptional course to help me learn how to tackle those areas where I still had a significant lack of experience. The Highland council also paid for the course for me so it was completely free, other than the costs of me traveling down to Edinburgh to do it. Also gave me some tips after driving alone for a couple of months, bad habits I'd picked up per se.

I passed just as it came in so didn’t do it. But, I did take advanced driving with my instructor on motorways and country roads. Really valuable, especially the country road course as I learnt a lot about vehicle dynamics and making safe progress.

Hi Richard, looking back I should of done the pass plus course after passing my driving test but I believe things happen for a reason, there’s a reason why it didn’t happen, I’ve tried a few different driving instructors but they’ve all said they’re too busy but I won’t give up until it happens, I’ve never been on a dual carriageway or a motorway or a spiral roundabout and I want to be able to drive around Leicester, my manager said the driving instructor said the driving instructor who taught her daughter was amazing so I think I’ll try him, hopefully he has some availability. 🙃

Basically, the major problem with it is that it's always been a ridged set time and set syllabus tick box exercise that has a negligible impact on insurance quotes. Rather than a flexible and timely course that actually provides significant practical additional instruction, skills and experience. For getting cheaper insurance and also better skills, if you can/are willing to afford the additional course and test costs, you be better off doing an advanced driver course and test

So to summarise your video... - if you have the option of a subsidised pass-plus course, it probably makes sense to take it up - otherwise, it's better to buy 6 hours of tuition as opposed to a formal "pass plus" course, as the 6 hours can be tailored to the needs of the individual

I passed my test in Jan 2018, I didn't own a car at the time and didn't buy one till about 6 months later in June. So I didn't drive a car after passing my test for some time. Over easter that year before I decided to buy a car I rented one from enterprise and drove from Dorset to Manchester. Enterprise just gave me the keys and told me to drive it out of the shop, I was initially extremely nervous. But by the end of that trip I'd done over 1000 miles in a week going to Manchester and then Coventry, Luton and Portsmouth before heading home again. Shame none of that really counted for my insurance quote when I did buy a car. But it was enjoyable enough that I did another trip as far as Edinburgh the following easter.

didnt do pass plaus, did speak to my instructor about it, but honestly. learning to drive where i did, covered all road types, high speed low speed, joinging a high speed road using slip roads ect, country lanes blah blah blah. quite honestly a few extra hours wouldnt have made much difference to me. or a big enough difference to my insurance (i think some of that was starting as an older driver) to be worth it. as a relativley comfortable driver from the get go we decided it was pointless. not to say I gave up on improing or furthering my diving skills. as shorlty after passing, work offered to put me on a course to drive Artics which glad to say I also passed as brutal as it was. am also thinking doing the adv driving stuff and blue light driving for my side gig at a pvt ambulance..... which am told is quite hard haha

Answer on price point alone: not really. There was not a significant difference in doing so. I passed my test then did my pass plus a few weeks after. I think I paid £80. Did I save £80 on my insurance? Nope. Some offered me £10 off. You make some great points though, I agree.

Being an advanced driver rarely reduces my premiums. It only makes a difference with select insurers. But it does make a massive difference to your driving style and ability. So instead of Pass Plus, do your advanced driving course - and what's more the lessons are usually free as they are run by advanced driving volunteers.

I was just lucky that in a 2 hour slot. I could do both motorways, dual carriage and rural roads. On another 2 hour slot it was snow and icy. I was told to do a emergency stop on a icy road to demonstrate the affect it had on breaking. But all of this was useful. It had only been a few months after passing my test. And I still had no car.

I did pass plus at 17, immediately after passing my driving test in 2003. Insurance for a 1.2l banger was going to be £1200 ... With pass plus, it made my insurance around £500, all for £120 and 6 hours of motorway driving with someone on your side. I'd always recommend it based on this experience.

I’ve been wondering if I should do this, I passed last year aged 50 and don’t have enough confidence in my driving. It won’t lower my insurance as that’s low anyway. I learnt and passed in a manual but now driving an automatic, still stick to my comfort zone driving routes but am now doing a lot more driving on busier roads and friends offered to take me on the motorway this week.

Oh man I tried to drive 50 miles along the motorway to the next city with no sat nav and never been there before on the first week alone what a disaster was stressful 😂bought a phone holder now for my phone helps a lot with navigation

@@ConquerDriving Thanks, I did have a lesson with an instructor when I was considering swapping to automatic. That worked well as gave me 2hrs driving an automatic and we also covered some areas I’m less confident in. It also gave me confidence to go on several test drives. I might see if that instructor would go for a lesson in my car but also can go out with friend’s husband who was an instructor. Know I need to start believing in my driving ability more as all my friends and instructors say I drive well.

@@alisont308 Biggest tip I can give is something a friend told me when I passed, "Driving is an emotionless act", you will learn a lot by just driving, mistakes will be made, focus on them after you finish your drive because otherwise you will be more stressed and more likely to make mistakes

pass plus helps me get insured on a bigger car for the similar price. eg. I can get insured on a golf v6 (204hp) instead of a 1.6L(104hp) for cheaper. The price for the 1.6L is £3200 in London and v6 is £2700. So second cars can be acquired as a first car. I also found out that I can insured on a Alfa Romeo 1.4 Turbo for £2700 and a QV 1.75Turbo for £2600 after pass plus. Details used age 20 full time undergrad student living at home and part time job as a parts advisor.

kind of dissappointed, I was advising someone who had just passed their driving test before the accident into my car that they should do the pass plus course admittedly in Wales so not sure if he got the discount. but thought the pass plus would teach him better the importance of more observations at giveway lines even when you cannot see the road clearly. and the such like, as that is where a novice driver really could do with extra training. yes to include motorways like both myself and him are like 20 minutes from the motorway, so might have helped with that. but you could book a tuition with a driving instructor back in 1994 for motorway driving after passing your driving test so learning motorways, so I know that was a thing when doing my driving test, and also done the booking with my instructor for 2 hours on the motorway. but like I said I would have thought the pass plus would be better suited to areas that really need the most amount of attention rather than what you describe.

When I checked with my insurer, they mentioned that premium will go up. Because this is a ‘change’ to the policy. I found it weird, because this will make me a safer driver. However they are looking it from a different perspective. Did not do the course then.

I believe that you should take the pass plus as it give you more lessons outside of the actual lesson, like motorway driving how to drive in snow, rain ect. If I didn't take it I would panic more on motorway. But cos I knew how it works and the rules of the motorway it really helps me be more understanding and aware. I think taking extra lesson on motorway should be as standers and if you don't then shouldn't be driving on the motorway. That is just my opinion. I don't see it make any different with the insurance. :)

Motorway driving should be mandatory either as a lesson or part of the test (As long as there is one close to the test centre). I live in Norway, in most bigger cities your test route always takes you on the motorway. Giving out licenses without motorway experience is outright irresponsible.

What I have noticed is that the city people that drive on motorways, haven't got a clue how to drive on rural roads

You can take motorway lessons now. My instructor doesn’t offer Pass Plus as she doesn’t believe it’s worth it but she does offer motorway lessons.

We never had this but 8n my time I do advanced awareness , police drivers awareness course, Cheshire police driving course, pass them all mini buses test for over 8 seats . This test are all higher than pass plus but don't give you anything .

Far better to take the RoSPA advanced test and see whether you get a 1, a 2, or a 3. If you pass, you'll get a certificate. If you get a 3, you'll need to take another test after a year. If a 2 or a 1, you retest after three years.

Could you please make a video explaining the rule about driving on the left on the left lane on dual carriage ways/motor ways? One thing I find a bit confusing is that the blue signs above the road tells me my destination is reached using the middle lane, but the highway code says to drive on the left. Would you stay on the left and then move right before the left exit? Thanks in advance!

Destination signs are an exception to the rule but even then you should keep to the leftmost lane if not overtaking. I.e if your destination is lane 2 or 3, you should use lane 2 by default and use 3 for overtaking. It's best to move into the correct lane for your destination as soon as safely possible to avoid rushed manoeuvres - sometimes there's a queue for traffic leaving the motorway too.

I got the pas plus 5 months after I passed my driving test and spoke to my insurancer and it made no diffences to my premium even with the black box installed and it cost my about £400 and did less than 6 hours

I passed my car test back in 1997 and immediately did Pass Plus. I did get around 10-12% on my first year's insurance. Which was £465 a year then. Then, in 2000 I did the Advanced Driving Course and got a 15-17% discount on my insurance for several years after. But this was 25 odd years ago so it may be different today. The IAM course did come in useful when I did my LGV C test the following year. In my opinion the IAM is useful to do.

Suggeston: What to do if somebody pulls out in front of you on the road. Yesterday someone cut me up on the motorway and thanks to luck and my cars automatic emergency braking systems i avoided a crash by inches. Few months before in January someone didnt give way and pulled out in front of me. Thanks to automatic emergency braking, your emergency stop video and luck i managed to avoid collisions both those times. Its life or death on those roads.

Get out on the road, practice after passing on Sundays quieter days on the motorway and busy areas. Another piece of paper that is meaningless and costly. Pay for a 3 hour session with instructor if you not great at some things. To get more confidence. If absolutely necessary.

You should do it for your own continued learning journey, but don't do it if you think it reduces premiums because it just doesn't. The only variables for premiums that make a difference over time is your age and where you live

All weather driving should definitely be part of the standard training and exam imo. The vast majority of new drivers won't know about controlling a slide or how to avoid it in the first place. At best they'll have theoretical knowledge but probably not practical experience

Hello, i like your videos, i used to live near Swindon "wink wink", just watched your video on "pass Plus" would autumn or winter be a better time for doing pass plus? also i agree with you that it should be tailored to the individual and have no time limit i.e when you have done the six modules then the form is submitted. wink wink refers to a certain roundabout that did not exist when i first did a driving test for a motor bike in '84.

I was 19. Paid £120 for the course 6 months after I passed my test. Knocked off £300 from my insurance. That was worth it in itself I think. 😂 Being 19, it didn't do anything for my driving as I still drove like a boy racer, but it was nice to get a few hours under my belt before I bought my first car.

I passed my test in Sweden with null faults in any capacity. Do you know why? Because I am the fucking best! Scoring a perfect score on the theoretical test in the UK isn't even enough to reach the bare minimum pass in Sweden.

The easiest way to check if pass plus gives you a discount is to add it into the details. I just did and it brought down my premium by £3 lmao. from £1696 to 1693. What a piss take.

oh gosh, a government agency that believes that "if we just have more paperwork it would make things safer, if we just make it harder for people to pass, if we encourage them to understand how to share the road better..." Yes those last 2 are very important but what is more important is to have better designed roads, better designed crossings and have people actually look into this paying attention to surroundings nonsense and staying calm while not understanding the situation... Then there's the stuff the drivers aren't responsible for, look at the rule book and try to simplify it or break it down into understandable chunks, have engineers look into that... I assure you you don't want administrators doing that or else they will just rewrite it word for word, engineers would go "hang on, that's not right" then go into scenarios, because it's what they have been taught... draft 1,000 times because 1 structure can kill thousands if it goes wrong" Then they will get curious "hey, can we tinker with how the roads and public transport is laid out?" But no... REAL solutions are well over budget, governments just want statistics and if a small drop occurs, it's a success!
