Is it better to be a generalist or a specialist as a musician? WHO KNOWS - but let's explore the subject a bit. In this video I look at Paul McCartney and another MYSTERY musician while asking what a generalist is, and what it means to be a specialist.
Is one better than the other? Is the distinction a real one? Am I getting more and more unhinged with each passing video I make?

This was way more insightful than I thought it would be! Maybe I’ve just been conditioned by all the mindless video essays out there that just read off Wikipedia pages and make broad statements like “this Beatles album was influential.” Subscribed

Interesting thought experiment.. maybe he’s a generalist (referring to McCa here) in the art world. He’s a painter, writer (books, poetry and such as well), and I believe did his own drawing in that squirrel kids books (fact check me on that). Point is dude does stuff in the art world for sure beyond music

Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment! I think this is where things get very subjective - for me, Macca *does* do that other stuff, but I don't think his skill is in anyway noteworthy at those things. They seem to me classic examples of a celebrity in one area doing something different, and succeeding (to whatever degree) off the back of their name and fame rather than skill. Some may disagree, of course, and that's fair - but that's my position

I feel the idea of having a unique voice in music does seem to be the most important thing regardless of how narrow or broad your focus is. I don't really know what Guthrie Govan sounds like when he's not role playing as other guitarists and mashing them together. But I could probably hear some Stevie Ray Vaughan solo and just know it's Stevie Ray Vaughan...or someone trying hard to sound like him.
