Perhaps Q is simply like the truth. The truth is neither good nor evil, it is simply the truth. Q Delivers blunt facts and truth, with his own take of course, but ultimately, somewhat agnostically, without taking a side.

I recommend the book "I, Q", especially the audiobook read by John DeLancie. He reads for all the characters, but the narration first person in Q's perspective. So when you hear him saying what Picard or Data say, you can tell it is what Q would have remembered as he treats Picard and Data like sidekicks. Excellently written and performed.

Q is like that older brother that wants to help you and can imagine what you will become, but knows that being somewhat antagonistic about it will help most. I may bloody your nose by rough housing, but now you know how to defend yourself and I’m not going to give you the answer, but I may “accidentally” drop a hint at how to figure it out. Even when turned into a human it is like when you “act” like you have been beaten to teach your siblings to to be gracious in vectory

Or that teacher from school you remember not liking much but for whom later on in life you remember learning the most from because they challenged you and made you think outside the box or bushed you one step further than you thought you could go, you might of hated them at the time and were very tempted to toilet paper their house, but later on as you matured realized without that teacher preparing you, your life might look a lot different.

@@Knight860 this is true for many friends of mine, not myself... but then, the teachers i hated then, were not doing what they did to help students, most just hated teaching whatever subject they were teaching and didnt hide that fact... my jr.high math and PE teacher for one term was the worst i can think of about that, she only wanted to teach PE, but had to do other subjects due to how the contracts are setup, only other subject she was qualified in was math... and she sucked at teaching it... i got kicked out of class one day for standing up and asking if anybody else needed any help, since the teacher wasnt going to help we would need to do it ourselves... she only got mad when people started to group up and work togather and talk.. she wanted abject silence as she surfed early Ebay and similar sites for stuff to buy... she kicked me out, thinking my father who was a teacher there would take her side... the admin and my father on the other hand, asked other students, and, she had a "TA" for the rest of her time teaching maths... who was really there to make sure she did her job and didnt treat kids poorly as she had been known to do... the weird part, years later i realized why she was so nice to the larger more butch girls... i knew she was gay back then but.. it didnt kick in that she was nice to girls she felt akin to and had a thing for... and nasty to guys and pretty/skinny/small girls... this understanding hit after talking with other teachers from back then and some of the students i went to school with... we all came to this as a group... and it made sense why she ended up leaving the school to work for a private girls school... that catered to "non-binary" people... (i know 3 gals who went there... funny enough all are married with kids and have been for decades... despite being sent to a school for as they put it, in a joking tone "the gays"... thing is they neither care about that shit nore ever did.. they were never gay/bi/trans/etc.. just tomboys that were not interested in sex and boys the way they were expected to be by so many around them... ones mother was trying to do the right thing sending her to be with what she was told would be her own community, when mom found out daughter was not only dating but sleeping with a boy from one house over on the block behind their home... she was very confused... teachers and counselors told her that her daughter was gay... her daughters dating and banging a boy... she decided to talk to her about it and found out, she didnt mind going to the all girls school and wasnt alone in being straight there, some had weird parents some had parents who were in the same shoes as hers... but wouldnt listen to their own kid due to authority figures from the school telling them conflicting info... its fucked up but..welcome to humanity.. on the other hand the teachers i think of that taught me the most... are ones i always respected, even if we didnt always get along... i have since also had more teachers then i can genuinely count walk up to me in public and shake my hand or hug me, and tell me, they learned alot from me, i was always full of useless facts, that checked out... i was also not what i thought i was seen as... most teachers apparently liked me, even if i annoyed the shit out of them... i was much better liked then i thought... sometimes because, i did the "tough love" type shit on them when the fucked up... had a teacher in highschool who nearly blew up a class room... she almost dumped a bunch of random stuff down a sink in the classroom... thank gods i stopped her... after going over what she had... toxic gas and an explosion would 100% have happened... this little white woman was down on her knees in front of me doing a full japanese bow head to floor over and over apologizing... i wasnt even in chemistry, i was working on her POS MAC, again and... well... damn good i stopped her.. genuinely could have killed somebody... after that i got the old chem teacher who was subbing another class to go talk to her and help her avoid such possible mistakes.. she never intended to teach chem.. but there wwasnt an opening in the area for math or teaching languages, so she took what she could get, and failed to admit she wasnt really qualified to run a class with an active lab... the principle had a few of us whos parents he knew help them clean out the stores and re-lable everything so it was safe and we had a local old man come and get stuff that was nolonger considered safe to use in public school labs... the old man was the chem teacher when my mother was in highschool... and very happy for all the glass and chemicals... told us a few would need a chemical wash of their own to be made useable again but... he had all the stuff at home to do the job... that old man was cool as hell... learned alot from him.. in trade for my having helped him get his riding mowerr running one day when i was walking home from school, he taught me alot of little skills, he was 100% incapable of mechanics though... changing a spark plug was something he didnt feel comfortable doing ffs... anyway.. in the end.. i loved teachers that challanged me, but not ones who where disrespectful a-holes... can say that for people in general... now, i also know some people who come off as gruff and mean.. who in reality are just amazingly socially inept and... when you realize that... and start to know them... it becomes obvious that "mean" was a perception that wasnt backed by any facts what so ever... in reality hes kind guy whos just... not the best with interpersonal communication... (when a guy will spent 90min driving you home, in your car, and get a ride back to work from his kid, because you looked a bit off and... seemed to have a fever... and he wanted you to go sleep and get back in proper working shape... then his kid shows up having been given the night off with pay, and some cash to grab food and come feed me... then the fool calls and has his daughter put it on speaker and... proceeds to tell her not to "break his dick" and me that if i get her knocked up, i better be ready to marry... (if you didnt know him, it would come off as a threat, knowing him, fucker was being cheeky... and telling us both that 1. his daughter was into me, 2. that he knew it, and if i didnt know before i did now, and 3. that he really enjoys trolling his daughter... like really really enjoys it... LOL... either way... i wasnt actually ill just... running on fuck all sleep since i had been at the office till 3am helping get something back up and running for the morning and. then it took over an hour to get home, i had to eat, shower, etc... got f-all for restful sleep then headed back to work for my normal day... when he found out, he told me that if it happened again toss him an email and stay home the next day if i dont get at least 6hrs sleep, genine dude... that often comes off as an ass... autism..its a hell of a drug.. ;)

I think Q is neutral. Neither good or evil. “Q Who” is probably the most misunderstood episode. We know the Borg had already encountered the Federation before this episode. In season 1s “The Neutral Zone” the Borg ended a few stations on the Federation and Romulan sides of the Neutral Zone. Imagine if Q hadn’t flung the Enterprise to meet the Borg? The Borg already knew about the federation, it was a matter of time before a cube came to Earth. Only the Federation would have had no idea what they were facing. Then factor in Enterpise “Regeneration” and we learn that the Borg had been sent a signal back in the 22nd Century. Then factor in the events of Star Trek Generations, we knew the Borg had met Gunian’s people, but not a good sense for when. So back in the 23rd century after the Enterprise-B got back to space dock and it’s tractor beam got installed they would have told stories about the Borg. These events lead to “7 of 9” as her parents decided to follow the rumors and find the Borg. A bad idea in hindsight… But again showing that the Borg had contact with earthlings before “Q Who” Those who say Q introduced the Borg to The Federation have it backwards, he showed The Federation who the Borg was.
@krzosu
@krzosu 2 жыл бұрын
well when you look at how the shows were aired and that the story was in fact added on later then on some level those people say the truth - TNG was the first show that introduced the borg - later shows basically expanded the story and twisted in sub plots that changed that perspective quie a lot. So when watched from chronological point of view of the shows when they aired TNG was the frist contatct per say but from the universe perspective this aint the case.

@@krzosu Timey Wimey stuff ends up changing things. But even if you only factor in ST-TNG, “Neutral Zone” aired before “Q Who” and in “Q Who” they finally figure out who was the mysterious culprit in “Neutral Zone” If it weren’t for Q that mystery wouldn’t have been solved until a Cube entered Federation space.

It seems likely that the borg cube that they encountered was already on the way to the federation. If this is the case then what Q was doing was saving the federation far more directly than just giving them a warning. Especially since he has seen the future and so knows what his interference will do. I've always suspected that part of the reason for Q's impish personality is because he doesn't want humanity to know they have someone looking out for them. He doesn't want people to worship him, he wants people who become stronger and so he acts like someone they would never worship.

Q-pid still fits. Q felt that he owed Picard for his time aboard the Enterprise as a mortal so he wanted to get Picard to lighten up about his career and make a little room for romance and how it could bring out admirable traits. Even then neither truly fit him. He defies categorisation. He's an enigma and a paradox. He's got the power to end the universe (at least, in theory) yet spends so much time (or what we perceive as time) with remarkably petty matters (that he takes deadly serious) and treats cosmic disasters with childlike delight. He's chaos and order, unrestrained and restrained at the same time. He's unknowable, ultimately - yet seems to want to be known.

either or neither would be my opinion, he's just an immortal who's bored out of his mind. I may have a, if not unique, very specific perspective, but I found All Good Things to be a very good episode, but an equally disappointing finale. I graduated high school in '95, so I grew up with these characters through very formative years. After watching the show for its original 7-year run to have it end on "Yup, it just keeps going," but STILL ENDING the series was an incredible let down for me. "The Trial never ended," was a profound revelation, but it also meant nothing was resolved.

I think the keys to understanding Q are actually in the episodes where he's there judging /other Q/. True Q - he helps Amanda see that she won't be able to restrain herself from using her powers, so she /must/ learn to use them wisely and control them properly. Death Wish - He uses Janeway to manipulate the Continuum into not regressing into authoritarian behaviors, allowing Quinn to choose his own fate. The Dominion War would have turned out so differently if Q's forced Borg encounter hadn't kicked Starfleet's research of variable shield technology into high gear. Sure, they would have gotten their shields to resist the anti-proton beams of the Jem'Hadar ships eventually after getting hold of a crashed ship to analyze, but it probably would have taken significantly longer to adapt Starfleet shield technology, and attrition was a major issue for the Federation in the war.

This whole topic of why “Q”, Q’s so hard is covered in the the Star Trek universe novel called The “Q” continuum. Spoiler alert spoiler alert, spoiler alert Basically Q allowed some extra dimensional beings that have Q like powers into this dimension using the Guardian of Forever. This caused a literal battle between the “Q” and these three entities on a physical and cosmic level. During the battle, one of the entities sent an asteroid attack at “Q’s” mate and in his haste he redirected the attack and that attack ended up blasting a young planet that had just began to spawn semi intelligent life in the form of large and small reptiles. That caused a mass extinction of life on that planet and all of the reptilians life died. The mammalian life survived, it was decreed by the head “Q” that “Q” had to watch over and guide the dominate species until they reached the level of evolution that was on the same level of the “Q”. TLDR: as a penance, Q is the custodian of planet earth and any of the life forms that develops from it. Hmmm. I wonder if that’s why he watches the Borg so much.

Like Q said to Picard. "you only dislike me. There are beings in the universe who truly despise me." I think Q feels a tiny bit of respect for Picard. After he became mortal and then won his way back into the Continuum, the visits were more of a personal nature for Picard himself. He helped him realize how the past shapes the person he is. He helps Picard to grow so that he can be ready for the next part. I would not be surprised if S2 of Picard is about helping Picard grow to be an ambassador to the continuum. Humanity has helped the Continuum. Humanity has influenced the Continuum just from its contact with humanity. Q Jr. has brought some of the human values back to the continuum. Whether it is to get the continuum to grow again, or to help humanity, or even Picard himself to grow, I don't think it is out of evil intentions.

Q is a fascinating character. He's not so much there to help out humanity, but to push them in directions that they would not have gone otherwise. Sometimes threatening, sometimes as a practical joker - but always presenting them with ideas and situations they would not have encountered otherwise. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call him a hero (at best, he holds strongly to the "tough love" approach where he'll pull them out of a situation he put them into, but not everyone's coming back home from it) - but he is absolutely an excellent foil to Picards staid determination.

I always saw the Q as gatekeepers in the universe. They watched for races that were getting close to ascending to a higher power and would then send a Q to test the race. If the race showed promise then the Q would guide them but if the race showed itself to be irresponsible and dangerous, then the Q would intervene and end the race before it was too late. I think every single interaction with the humans was planned out by Q just to test their patience. Even the episode where Q becomes human and the episode where one of the Q want to commit suicide was just a test.

I personally believe that the Q are one of three things, the Q are a race that is from a previous universe and came to this one (Always existed), a group of future humans that from the end of time came back to ensure humanity's survival (testing humanity (not the federation), Lonely, as Q had said to Riker, they may become stronger then they are, and as the civil war occurred due to boredom it seems to reinforce this. Of the three I suspect the third, they are one of the first races, they evolved and explored the galaxy (not universe) and time (within context) itself to an extent. Still aware of most of what existed but explorers, but in the last million years they got bored. Humanity's appearance gave them some interest as they were an oddity, unusual, strange. Humans were changing socially and otherwise at a rapid pace and there were even outliers that made no sense. Keep in mind that Q as a group have not shown actual omnipotence, far from it despite DeLancy's Q claims. Q was surprised to see Voyager in the Delta quadrant, if he was as all seeing as he claims it should not have been surprising, if they were not as all knowing as they claim then the other Q in Q-pid would not be shocked at Picard's actions. All we can confirm for absolute certain is a mastery or near it of manipulation of space/time So once they became aware of humans and they started looking and some level of confusion came in, the other races of the federation were not changing at the same rate, slower, more conservative. This culture and social evolution that seemed to spark change in others started the civil war, not the suicide as was stated, at least not specifically, the humans were involved with it, allowing it to occur, changed the Q. while Beta Cannon, I, Q does present the idea that the galactic barriers were setup to keep beings away from the main living area of the galaxy. Were this the case would the Q not have trapped themselves within or at least a part of their population? Perhaps being part of the reason for their boredom? Just thoughts.

Quite a persuasive case. Q is, to me, an imp. An irreverent, incautious, presumptuous force. But, not a wholly malicious one. He is, to my mind, moulding clay, when clearly if he really wished it, he could omit all the clay from everywhere in the universe. Instead, he chooses to mould it into something. That alone answers the question really.

Qpid is integral to the overall story building between Q and Picard. I’m betting Q saw Picard a little like Picard’s brother saw him - an arrogant “I will be the best. I am the best” type. When Q saw Picard’s weakness for Vash, I think it elated him to see an evident flaw, so he conjured up that ridiculousness to “tap dance” all over Picard’s weakness metaphorically saying “na na na na boo boo” In tapestry, Q comes back to show Picard that even his weaknesses lead to who he is, almost consoling him, in case his last encounter left Picard bruised.

One of the ways that humanity has always been shown to grow, both in the series and in reality, has been through conflict. Maybe not all out war, but there is always some kind of struggle to overcome that provides the necessity for growth. I think that's part of what Q is providing. The conflict to spur growth. Q knows humanity can be better and pushes them to do so, but in a way that they do it in spite of him, not for him, figuring out the path to that growth on their own rather than having it shown to them by a hand-holding teacher.

Great video. Just something that I would like to put out there that might be interesting spin on the Q. The "Test put on Riker" I dont really believe that it was Riker Q was testing but humanity/the friends around Riker. When you truly think about it. If the test was about him then in all honesty by his intent he would have failed. It's his friends who pass by rejecting the gifts given to them by Riker even though they know they would have essentially unlimited access to the Q powers through Riker. The best test of integrity is the test when the subject is not aware they are being tested.

Before watching this vid, this is my preliminary analysis: Q is an entity who respects Picard among others, (people of extraordinary character and ability) and I believe, generally wants what he views as the best for mortals. He is amused over how endearing and clever they can be despite being so powerless, frail and primitive. And he enjoys seeing them succeed. It impresses him in a way he can not really admit, but find fascinating. He as a typical trickster god with a soft spot stereotype. Mostly a pain in the ass, but that sometimes makes all the difference in order to save what matters most. He helps by testing mortals so they can rise to the occasion and be their best, often when it is most needed.

@adrianvanleeuwen

Q seems troubled on Picard show but sick? I'm not sure. It was usually in Q's interest to give clues to Picard on how Picard can save humanity in the past series, that is after Picard passed his test in the TNG opening show Farpoint. Q towards the end of TNG had a fondness for Picard. He is not villain or hero exactly. So I am hoping the writers make his character consistent to past performances. Q slapping Picard did seem odd though. But can someone tell me what happens to the evil Picard in the alternate timeline when the Prime universe Picard takes over his body. Or is this a "Quantum Leap" show sort of thing? There, the original people went to a waiting room in that show and return later after the hero leaves the body.

My theory is that something possibly more powerful than the Q are responsible for messing with time and this has had an impact even on the Q Continuum. Q’s not sick at least not in the traditional ill health sense, yet somethings not right either, the change to time has effected him, maybe like vestiges of the new timeline are bleeding into his character without fully overwriting it, I can’t quite put into words what I mean. Of course this theory is nothing but the wild speculation of my imagination and not evidence based.

Prior To Watching Video: My Opinion; Q is honestly neither. He has always subtlety acted in humanity's *EVENTUAL* best interest, but at the same time covers this up because he enjoys playing the jovial mustache-twirling dastardly villain. Think about it. That single Borg cube was already pretty devastating at the battle of Wolf 359. Right on the doorstep of the Sol System. Now imagine if Starfleet had literally no forewarning at all. Earth would have fallen, almost without a doubt, and then the Borg would've had a foothold in the Alpha Quadrant.

Q and the Continuum are neither heroes or villains, but rather one of various different, highly evolved species, with “god-like” abilities. These species watch over lesser species that either they evolved from or consider these lesser beings, their “children.” Some examples are: - Trelane’s parents - The Bejoran Prophets - Also the Pah-Wraith - The Edo’s Protector Which those are but a few examples. Each has a group they are attached to and help or protect their “children”. Q (John) has a special connection to the humans and in particular to Picard. I would say the Bajoran Prophets do too, except Sisko is part human and part Prophet. This brings me to the evolution of lesser beings to these advanced beings. Many times we see this happen in Star Trek. Here are some of those examples: - Mitchel and Dehner take on “god-like” abilities - As mentioned Wil Riker - Ben Sisko Perhaps there is a battle between these advanced species and they need to back a group to evolve and replace them. Who knows?

Myself I have always felt Q has favored humanity given everything we see through, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and even in the expanded universe. Now in the beginning I will agree he seemed to have a more adversarial role but by the time of Q Who he is showing humanity they weren't ready for what lies ahead it either would have been the Borg or Dominion but humanity would have fallen if Q hadn't shown them the deep end of the pool. Something I do have to admit is the biggest flaw of humanity is they never learn from these lessons. We see it time and time again, I wonder if humanity either became the Q or if like humanity only a few Q reached the level we see in the series Because the only reason Riker passsd his test was because of Picard and his friends if not for Riker's loyalty to them I think we would have seen a repeat of Lt. Comm. Gary Mitchell who like Riker receives god like power and just abuses it, because he didn't earn it. Now are there members of humanity that can learn control very much so but as we see in Cupid that not even Picard is the best person to have these powers because of his feelings and the point here was Picard needed to let go, much like at the end of Tapestry Picard needed to let go of fear and regret to achieve his greatest which he has forgotten by the time of Picard the series. Because Q needs to teach these lessons all over again.

Q is much like an extension of Troi. As in Nemesis where Picard praises Troi for being a guide of conscience, Q extends that into a guide of personal exploration. He's said before that the Continum has a special interest in the human race. And like in "All Good Things", Q wanted Picard to explore the expanse of existence itself. On top of that, what actual harm has he caused? Aside from killing Tasha, that is. And he did bring her back so all is good Really, he's been more informative and protective than anything else.

I really like your analysis. I always felt that taking an eagle eye view showed Q was steering humanity positively. Exposing them to the Borg for example and then the federation beginning to militarism Starfleet was just in time as the federation discovered the dominion shortly after and would have lost the war if it hadnt turned to designing proper military warships like the defiant. They resent many of the lessons that Q teaches them but as Q says without a bloody nose, would humanity really take on board the hard lessons he was showing them. They were all pressured situations to give humanity an opportunity to rise to the occasion and grow.

Q seems like a 110yr old human that’s chosen to live like me, when I was a 21yr young person. Living moment to moment, not taking life too seriously, taking risks, defying authority, filled with exuberance, excitement, enthusiasm, confidence, spontaneity, boundless energy, being larger than life, the life of the party, the ‘troublemaker’, completely uninhibited, shameless, unbridled, unconfined, being yourself, without fear of what others think of you, with sooo much yet to explore, now that you’re finally free from the restrictions of childhood, making your own choices, forging your own path, not worrying about what ‘might’ happen and just going for it, diving in head first, unafraid of consequences, having fun now rather than waiting until ‘after…’, kind of like seeing through the eyes of a child to rediscover awe and wonder, yet knowing where to draw the line…sometimes, being in love with life and doing all the important things! Imagine doing 21 all over again with all the knowledge you’ve gained by 110yrs of life experience, with the added bonus of immortality and omnipotence. Yo, the things I’d get up to…and we’ll have fun, fun, fun, ‘til her daddy takes the T-Bird away!
