FYI, Cyberpunk being a Nvidia sponsor title has had direct consequences on its RT implementation. Nvidia sent its own engineers to help or outright code the Raytracing in the game. The consequence is that Nvidia did everything to dumpster AMD's performance with the game's RT. Specifically, a Raytracing implementation is about bouncing lights to create reflection effects in the space. It is far too costly to do so over the entire world, so the world is broken down into smaller spaces through a Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH). You can think of a BVH as a cube broken down in 8 cubes, themselves each broken into 8 cubes, broken again into 8 cubes, and so on, until the space is divided into small enough cubes that lighting reflection can be calculated efficiently enough. AMD's BVH implementation is currently (RDNA 2, RDNA 3) resting on the driver side, in the system RAM. This is a very slow solution, and is one of the main reasons why AMD's RT is much slower than Nvidia's, but typically not too problematic. However, it's only mildly problematic at a normal amount of light bounces, which is typically 1 or 2. You get extremely diminishing returns past 2, so most games stop at 2 bounces. For Cyberpunk, Nvidia made the game use 4 bounces. This has almost no value in visual quality, but does significantly impact AMD's poorer RT due to their in system memory BVH inefficiency. It's the reason why an XTX in Alan Wake 2, or Metro Exodus, or any normal RT game, will have poor raytracing, but will fall typically somewhere around the performance of a 3090-3090 Ti. One generation behind, but not unusable. In Cyberpunk however, it falls all the way down to a 3070/2080 Ti performance, which is obviously just unacceptable for a card of this price and performance. I think Control had the same situation too. However, for Unreal Engine 5 games, or for other RT titles, AMD should be 20% behind Nvidia, not 50% behind in price performance.
@KrushSG
@KrushSG 6 ай бұрын
Wow thanks for the explanation, happy to hear that there is still hope yet for amd in UE5 titles. Ngl the 50%(sometimes more) performance hit we take in cyberpunk, plus the inherently worse looking RT is kinda soulcrushing haha

@OneAngrehCat 6 ай бұрын
@@KrushSG Sadly it's not MUCH better, just not as awful. RDNA 4 is rumored to actually move the BVH problem into the GPU itself, so AMD should get a performance much closer to Nvidia...we'll know around the end of next year. Cheers

completely agree. all the RT games ive seen wether its team green or red, i just prefer a higher resolution with full raster. its a much more mature tech which has been fine tuned for so long it honestly looks amazing in modern games. 10 years from now when you can do RT without aggressive upscales more than likely will be a LOT better, but like all technologies it still needs time to mature.

May I ask. What if I download HD rework and then place texture settings to medium. I hear this allows better vram room as opposed to without the mod yet still has the same if not more texture quality than stock?
@KrushSG
@KrushSG 6 ай бұрын
Hmm that I actually don't know cos I've never tried it. I know some texture mods specifically require you to set textures to high in order for them to work so that may be a bad idea. For HD reworked you could try the balanced version or if that's too much then I'd actually say sticking with the vanilla textures but going with the high setting may be better.

Buying an expensive ass GPU to finish a singleplayer game sounds so dumb to me. I stick exclusively to MP and AMD is too good for the price for that, and you don't want upscaling or RT in MP games, just smoothness and responsiveness
@KrushSG
@KrushSG 6 ай бұрын
It IS dumb haha, and not just the singleplayer part. Dropping top dollar on a gpu that only 1 or 2 games can actually benefit from isn't a wise choice, period. Unless it is for a game that you can see yourself playing exclusively for a few years, or it's your job etc, yea maybe. Perhaps when 7-8 out of every 10 games have (properly) good RT, then it would make more sense. Then again, by the time that happens, lord knows what Nvidia would have come up with to drive gpu prices up further. Soul Tracing perhaps. And AMD will gladly follow their lead, giving us a 30% discount on Nvidia's prices for proportionally less "features", fooling the masses into thinking they are the angels that they really aren't.

I use to be all about MP games now enjoy SP more. Not saying you are dumb to avoid SP games to avoid your gp not being able to handle the RT but its strange. I agree in MP games you want speed less lag and graphics don't matter as much. I played the fastest MP Q1 ctf, Q2 ctf, URT2004 ctf etc. Speed is king there. But avoid SP games due to your card means you are missing out on some gems. It boils down to money and AMD 6800 is a decent bang for the buck with its 16GB. That said I prefer my 4070 and did pay more for the RT abilities and it pays off big in "Some" games not all. You now play RTX quake 2 on AMD and get around 60fps on a 6800 so you are not cut off completely with AMD.

@@KrushSG You know, there are some people who buy 4090 and 1000-4000$ setup (joysticks, panels, VR) only for one game, MFS or DCS World. Are they stupid? For me it is stupid to buy the latest Iphone and use it only for chatting and watching KZfaq/Tiktok/etc.

You are absolutely correct. The reason AMD has a little better raster to price performance is due to almost all focus going to just that NVIDIA is similar, a little more expensive, but comes with a much more potent suite of Graphics processors and tools.

I can't take you seriously watching you troll night city in that car LOL. Did you mod it or something? Anyways I'm on a 4070ti so I can't say I fully relate but I didn't know amd users actually had visually worse RT, I always thought it was just a raw RT performance difference between the brands, that sucks.
@KrushSG
@KrushSG 6 ай бұрын
Haha ikr, it's the best troll car. Yes I modded the car with Car Modification Shop. Yep, unfortunately that's how it is with RT. It is a technology pioneered by Nvidia and they are constantly releasing upgrades for it so AMD is just left playing catch up. Not that amd has much hope of actually catching up anytime soon imo, the difference in rt capabilities are just too big.

as much as i like AMD and want to support them.. when looking at pure power consumption of both latest cards, nvidia wins hands down. AMD just drinks power on their last couple gens of video cards *although their cpu's have always been rather amazing*. Nvid is just less, heat, less fan speed (noise), longer life. not to mention trying to resell an amd card is meh. you lose a lot. reselling nvidia cards is easy and they hold value way longer.

That ghosting in RT reflections depends on the material it is applied. Glass and smooth surfaces are crystal clear, high definition and there is zero ghosting. Also the cost of Psycho SSR is the same as RT reflections. Comment section is a bit of a circle jerk of AMD fanboys trying to justify their purchases and hide the fact that they're jealous that they can't run RT. You don't need an insanely and ridiculously overpriced 4090 to enjoy RT in this game at over 60fps. And RT has been a staple in most games over the past couple years and it will keep increasing. Running an AMD CPU and an Nvidia GPU so I don't rly have any brand loyalty which just seems silly to me. Fact is AMD CPUs are better for gaming and RT is definitely superior to raster and will keep being implemented in games more frequently and keep improving as time goes on. You'll either need to switch to an Nvidia GPU at some point or hope AMD brings something equivalent in terms of RT performance to the market.

I'm sure there are more than a few amd users out there who wish they had gotten a 40 series GPU. For me personally, as someone who did the opposite and downgraded from a 4090 to a 7900xtx, the 4090 is pretty much the only Nvidia card I'd personally ever consider owning(in this gen, at this point in time, assuming I had the spare cash). Where amd users of today tend to live in a world of denial that amd cards are actually competitive(they really aren't other than maybe dollar per raster frame), Nvidia users of today equally love to tell themselves RT is actually good right now to justify their purchases. Cos it really isnt, yet. There's no denying RT is superior to raster, the question is whether the current implementation of it is and to me the answer is no. Do we have many games that support RT in 2023/early 2024? Sure. Ones that actually do RT well enough for it to be categorically superior to raster? Nope. Only a very small handful of games do that, and yes they do it really well and no cyberpunk isn't one of them. The gap in visual quality between RT and PT in cyberpunk is just mindboggling. So as far as ray tracing goes in cyberpunk, it's full PT or nothing for me(maybe RT local shadows, that's worth turning on). But to have PT at the resolutions I game at, that's basically a 4090 or nothing. Just my personal opinion of course. I don't deny the new supers bring way better value than their non super counterparts. It's actually completely logical now for someone to buy any of the supers, even the 4080 super. Though again, I wouldn't, if I go green, it's 4090 or bust. That card is too much of a beast over the rest. It's a shame cos if they had bumped the 4080 super up to 20gb along with the price reduction, I woulda sold my 7900xtx and jumped ship instantly. Heck I might even have paused if they went up to 20gb without the price reduction. But alas it wasn't so. Next gen maybe, 5090 or whatever it's called. Oh also, the cost of psycho ssr is not the same as RTR. It's slightly cheaper at native resolutions and significantly so as soon as you flip on any upscaler. It's real easy to test too. I personally get 90fps at native with ssr ultra. It drops to 58-62 with ssr psycho. This drops to ~50-53 with RTR, it's worse in wet weather but let's just say it's a ~10% difference. At FSR quality, ssr psycho gives me 100-105 fps, vs 72-77 with RTR(half resolution tracing to boot), a very much bigger difference. I could flip on a whole bunch of other RT effects if I wanted to with psycho ssr, I can't with RTR unless I step down to FSR balanced. And let's be real... It's FSR we're talking about, we don't really wanna go below quality if possible lol.

Compare it with alan wake 2 😅, there you will see a lot of difference and even a rtx 4070ti beats the 7900xtx. You should have kept your 4090 😅
@KrushSG
@KrushSG 6 ай бұрын
It was just too much money where I live, I bought it out of curiosity knowing I could sell it for a profit in the month it took the xtx to launch. The 7900xtx red devil was $1800(~$1.3k usd), the 4090, and only a windforce mind you, was $2700(~$2k usd). I eventually sold it for a $150 profit so I "saved" $1050(almost $800usd) going for the xtx instead. I just don't need the extra rt performance, not for the whole 2 games that actually look great atm anyway. Maybe next gen I'll relent and actually stick with an rtx card if amd doesn't improve rt performance, by then we'll probably have more rt heavy games. We honestly need more games that implement RT and PT as well as cyberpunk and AW2 have done. I actually prefer Cyberpunk's PT implementation over AW2's though. Granted, AW2 looks positively better at almost every quality setting but its path tracing specifically is actually kinda misleading. Cyberpunk's PT is truer to the definition of what Path Tracing is(100% full ray traced GI, with stock GI disabled entirely), AW2's PT is selective with what it traces and it has a lot of fallback to stock GI, which carries over errors from non-RT shadows and occlusion. That type of tracing is exactly how regular Ray Tracing functions in most games(including cyberpunk). So really AW2 should have labelled it as the Highest RT setting rather than labelling it as PT.
