I been thinking why spy is Gabe Newell's favorite class cause I think thats interesting coming from a dev. The more I thought about it and played spy more and more the more I realized Spy is like playing HL1 sometimes. The effectiveness of spy isn't really on your kit like other classes but the player. Spy's loadout is more for problem solving and deceiving people which are mechanics that leans on the player themselves. In some situations getting a kill with spy and getting away with it alive can feel like a combat puzzle sometimes and it requires skill, luck ,and improvising. But if a good spy player basically has your entire team figured out he can feel like a horror movie villain.

The best thing about spy is that people respect spy more than sniper. Case close

Spy is way better if you remember to use his tools. Like yeah cloak and knife are good. But a good disguise is amazing. The revolver is pretty much a more accurate shotgun in most situations. You're faster than almost everyone else (outside buffed speed and weird scenarios) Sapping buildings is fantastic as a way to help the team push in. You can steal resources like health and ammo from the enemy team. (So much so that sometimes I put on the RTR and devote the game to sabotaging engineers) But the ONLY thing anyone focuses on is the knife.... which is sad. A lot more fun can be had with the other tools at spies disposal and you can just. Honestly be more useful that way. You don't play spy like soldier or scout. You need to keep in mind you're a SPY so. YK. Try a little espionage.

Pick classes are only good if you have a team that can capitalize on picks. I've won many games against spies who are top fragging on the server, because at the end of the day kills matter less than the objective - the same applies to sniper.

I'm a spy main, I think spy is a good class, but everyone expects spys to get 10000 points and eat bullets like a wall, its a SUPPORT class, not offence or defense, he's good for clearing in the enemy's backlines for a path that your team can cross

I've had a dead ringer spy disguise as his team's medic (me) to bait a bomb and it worked. Killed a Scout and Soldier for free and when they Ubered early to try and push, the Medic that they just killed rised back up like a German Jesus Christ and we had an advantage with the late Uber.

I play lots of Medic and Engineer. While Enemy Spies can be... Well, intensely frustrating, having a decent Spy on your side can sonetimes feel like having an invisible bodyguard. Spy is more of a team player than he lets on, and I appreciate the cooperative Spy Mains for that.

Spy is an EVEN Class, he can be killed by anyone, or thing, but he can kill anyone, or thing. All the thing spy has is built to deal with different Classes styles, or different machines.

I think trying to compare to sniper and medic was the wrong approach to answering the question. I don't think spy is the weakest class but spy is weaker than medic(although this one slightly depends on what you mean by weakest) and sniper. Comparing spy to say engie or pyro is a closer match.

my main issue with Spy as a class is not only how luck based it can feel, but also how squishy a Spy is when he's so easy to counter along with how inherently dangerous getting a backstab is. Melee in tf2 being so buggy doesn't help, but when you have to get in the range where most classes would want to fight you anyway, backstabbing becomes an entirely too risky of an ordeal that, yes may have good rewards, but when the act of getting there is so monumentally difficult, I can't say the effort needed really gets outweighed by the reward given, especially with the mountain of things that could go wrong with any given play. Spy probably isn't an instant lose button but I would say Spy has the toughest time out of any class, especially with how many Anti-Spy weapons are in the game.

Spy by design *has* to be the weakest class, but that doesnt make him garbage. TF2 is a game about objectives and as long as the objective is the *only* way to win then Spy has a place because it doesn't matter if you're God-tier, eventually you're going to be too occupied to defend yourself from the Spy. And as long as Spy is good enough to make those moment devistating, then he will always be a relevant part of the game. This isn't a game like most modern multiplayers: there is no Power-Creep. Even though he's the weakest, no one can do all the things he can do. And just like classes like Scout, Pyro, and Engineer, sometimes what Spy can do isnt useful. It happens, that doesnt mean hes unviable.

if you play Spy as a newbie studying the class is hard but if you got straight A's in French class it is easier than you thought

I like using enemy disguises to figure out what weapons and classes the other team has so i can be proactive about my actions before a round starts. When cloaked I cycle through disguises until i find one with low heath so i can call out medic and blend in for a cheeky medic pick. Heavy disguise is surprisingly effective for that.

Lemme toss an anecdote lemme cook. I main spy. I've been through it all. The suffering. The self-doubt. Horror. Fear. Impotence. Victory. Loss. Success. But on a particularly rough 200th hour as spy, I decided my team didn't need a 4th spy, and we were down an explosive class. So, I picked Soldier, switched my melee with the Escape Plan, and shat on the opposing team. I was so oppressive that some poor medic decided to shove his kritzkreig up my ass for the rest of the game. Bragging about 14 year old computer game aside, I... I don't play soldier. I learned rocket jumping THAT game. If you're a good spy, you'd be a great [INSERT ANY OTHER CLASS] with like 10 minutes of practice. Spy is 100% a generalist, Jack of All Trades, Master of Fuck All.

My favorite way to play spy is to harass engineers until they rage-swap to pyro.

You summed up the problem with the class actually very apt, he’s “okay at most things” but doesn’t specialize in any of them, which for a 15-30 respawn can just leave a headache to players who would rather not play with one, it’s more of a tool for abusing public lobbies or un-cooperative ranked games just to remind them that spies exist and to get their A-game on figuring out who is a spy early Spy had a cut weapon called the DNA gun, which if you shot the person and back stabbed them, you would become their class, nullifying the biggest weakness of the class, that it’s just generally underpowered

I find spy a good trade class, a lot of people complain about spy syndrome like it’s his defect, but truth is if I’m consistently getting 1-2 kills a minute and all of those kills are medics, soldiers, heavies, and demomen, well I don’t give a damn how many times I die, I’m positively impacting my team by decreasing the amount of focus fire they have to lay down to successfully make a push, and that’s the real victory.

0:34 that's a simple answer. 2 points for 1 kill. always divide a Spy's score by 2 and see how useful he really was.

Spy is undeniably the worst class but that doesn’t mean he’s totally useless.Spy can be used in highlander because there are 9 players which brings it pretty close to the chaos of a casual match the disorder is what allows spy to do well.In a 6v6 he can’t do much of anything and hell even in a 9v9 a sniper will typically do better and do it more consistently.Spy is objectively the worst class in the game relying on shitting hitreg and the enemy team being distracted to do anything.He may not be useless but he definitely needs a buff.Ideally the spy would be able to create his own chaos in the enemy team he already does with sapping teles and dispensers which removes the enemy teams ability to retreat or get to the front lines effectively.I don’t know how you could change him specifically maybe you could have him send out a hologram or fuck up someone’s vision like the tranquilizer in tf2c It’s a spy there’s a lot of interesting things you can do with that consept other than just making a new gun or another knife spy’s power isn’t his ability to kill people it’s to disorganize the enemy if I had to guess the reason he was never balanced with this in mind is because 12v12 casual is already chaotic so the class roll just isn’t that necassary.

he's only somewhat useful in large teams where either the combined IQ of the enemy team is 10, or when they have no sound. other than that, the skill cieling is... unlimited.... but the problem is his skill requirement to even get 1 kill. Nothing feels worse than playing spy with even a competent enemy team, and I genuinely think that if spy was removed, the game would be completely unchanged except for spychecking. Spies are useless, at least for now. And honestly, I don't think valve will ever give a shit about this game, so honestly, spy is fucked through and through.

Spy gets double points for backstabs. In other words, his points are inflated. As the skill level increases, people get better at sniffing out spies, and sniper becomes more of a threat. Spy not being absolutely worthless doesn't mean he isn't the weakest class. I don't doubt in 6's people swap to spy, and highlander obviously requires one on both teams. There will be top level spys. They can do things. But they will pretty much always be outshone. In pubs, if you have more than 1 it just gets worse.

Spy IS the worst class, because he doesn't win based on skill, rather lack of enemy skill. Meaning being good at spy isn't gonna guarantee you a victory. I shred spies, even "Good" spy mains. And, obviously, having high points doesn't mean you are doing good or better than someone else. A soldier may have less points than a spy, but he wasn't farming noobs, he was on the cart actually doing the objective. I'm sure if I had more time to think about it I could properly formulate this, but spy is objectively the worst class and that's okay. Doesn't make him bad, just means hes the worse.

The only reason I consider spy the weakest is because almost every single one of his weapons has some kind of bug in them AND because I don't like the idea of him being a suicide pick outside of niche scenarios.

Spy is the risk vs reward character. A good spy can know the risk and need to work around for the reward of important picks and messing with enemies so there easier picks for everyone. Aka keeping pyro away from the engie and medic, scout not focus on dodging and heavy always turning around.
