Tom Riker deserves a mention, too. Dude spent eight years completely alone in a cave, got rescued only to find out that (from his perspective) somebody else has been living his life the whole time, is forced to basically start his life over almost from scratch, and then just . . . has to go back to work. I don't blame him at all for becoming disillusioned with Starfleet.

@@DerekBee There's experiments in PTSD treatment working toward that. The issue with PTSD is the emotional component, not the bare facts of what happened, so what the experiments are looking at is something like what was seen in the film "Equilibrium", either through chemical treatment or therapy or some combination. Essentially, you try and remove the emotional component from the specific memory so it becomes emotionally distant. You remember what happened, you remember that you were scared, upset, whatever, but it's just bare facts, not something that emotionally affects you now. Yes, there are scary aspects to such technology, but for everything involving the human brain you can think of negative possibilities for anything that tries to help people.

The problem with taking time off, is that almost every time Starfleet officers are depicted taking time off something worse happens to them. The overwhelming majority of these are alien abductions leading to torture, brainwashing, implants, and all kinds of other definitely stressful experiences. I don't think Geordi successfully arrived at a single conference in the series, despite burning his vacation time for them.

The Commodore in “Court Martial” also plays perfectly into the argument that Starfleet is negligent towards it’s officers. Here you have a flag officer who believes Kirk made a mistake due to the stress and pressures of being a starship captain. However rather than admitting that Starship Captains are under this intense pressure he wants Kirk to take a desk job so Starfleet won’t have to deal with the fall out… that sounds pretty negligent.

I think an excellent example of this would be the episode with Thomas Riker, Will’s transporter accident duplicate. They find him on the planet where he’s been living alone for like… eight years? He’s been in total isolation for a long time, and when he’s finally rescued he finds that some other version of himself has been living the life that he lost, ruined the relationship he cared the most about, and that nobody even missed him because they didn’t know he was even gone. Then, he’s almost immediately back in uniform, and put under the command of his own self who now outranks him, and later is sent back down to the planet he was stranded on to repair some stuff. Any one of those traumas should require a full psych evaluation at the very least, but the episode ends with him just being reassigned to a new ship and going about his business. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that he later sort of snapped and joined a terrorist organization.

When I was in the army, me and my fellow soldiers came under fire, I was a combat nurse who, like many other combat medical soldiers and civilians, we all medically responding, we treated the injured, moved the dead and continued to get fired upon. We were all back to work the next day like nothing happened (except the dead and injured). I got in trouble for yelling at a high ranking officer about not doing so well. I think a lot about one of Chakotay’s lines: “when this is over, we’ll all have a lot of grieving to do”. Pointing out shoving their feelings aside to focus on the mission at hand, which is not particularly healthy, but with an awareness they have to deal with it sooner or later before it starts to fester and get psychologically inflamed. The recognition of the latter part is why it stuck out to me as a line, vs the more standard “just keep your head down right now” type line you usually see.

I think "Hard Time" does a little better than merely "paying lip service" to the notion that recovery from trauma is a process. O'Brien is desperate to avoid dealing with his guilt over what happened and he's hellbent on getting back to work so he can pretend it didn't happen. Sisko and Bashir go along with it at first because he's so insistent, but they ultimately change their mind and force him to take time off.

The only partial justification in Voyager's case is there's not really anywhere to take a break to. Regarding the fourth floor, I theorize in that particular holonovel, that Janeway's "employer" was keeping his wife locked up there and saying she was dead so he would be free to canoodle with the help, given said employer claiming he was in love with Janeway, the little girl claiming her mother wasn't dead, and that other maid what's-her-face being extremely hostile to Janeway (perhaps out of jealousy?).

While I'm not a big Enterprise fan, I do actually like how after Trip's sister is killed by the Xindi, they take the time to acknowledge how broken up inside he is about it, even though he's trying to put on a brave face. There was also the TNG episode "The Bonding," where this little kid's mother dies, he becomes an orphan, and they just sort of leave him alone with his suffering (this seems to be Starfleet's standard policy whenever someone's just had a traumatic loss), hilarity ensues, but at they end they actually acknowledge how messed up that is by bringing in Wesley and having him talk about how he tried to hide all his grief when his dad died and it really didn't do him any favors. This episode actually ran up into a lot of resistance from Gene Roddenberry, who said in the 24th century no one grieves and we just accept death, so maybe that's where a lot of this comes from.

Troi was the one everyone went to when they needed to talk it out. Who did Troi go to? I felt bad for her from the very start of the series.

Something you didn’t mention is how everyone responds to/rejects medically mandated time off - the doctors always have to threaten their patients to get them to take even just the rest of the day off - it’s like they’re so indoctrinated that they can’t even accept when a starfleet representative tells them to take time to heal

Which is ironically pretty accurate to how an abused person reacts when they’re told to stop doing the behaviours their abuser demanded of them. Even little things like if they had to wash dishes a certain way; often they’ll do it that same way years after getting to safety without some at least minor intervention. Of course with an example like that it can be relatively harmless, but even so it can still remind them of the prior times. And of course some behaviours can be far more deleterious and dangerous like not sleeping until they pass out, or driving without taking breaks. So one could look at it not as merely being indoctrinated, but as having a fear response to the idea of breaking out of their habitual actions - as focusing on the actions can distract from the bad environment while rest can allow the victim to ponder their circumstances.

@@limiv5272 Being genetically engineered isn't a crime in the Federation, but genetically engineering someone is. As a result, the Federation sought to discourage people from genetically modifying their offspring, by not only arresting the parents (the people who actually committed the crime), but also removing the benefit of augmenting their children; if the opportunities of the children are limited, it removes the temptation to break the law. It's not comparable to being black or gay, because those things are not the direct result of crimianl actions, because they're not the result of someone illegally augmenting your genome. You are correct, however, that the people who were augmented, through no choice of their own, do suffer for those actions. One thing you forgot to mention about Wounded is that it is heavily heavily implied that Captain Maxwell was right! The Cardassians were in fact stockpiling weapons. I'm not saying that Maxwell didn't have unresolved trauma but he was still right in this incident. Maybe the fact that he knew more about the Cardassians from his war experience then the bureaucratic admirals that ran starfleet gave him the perspective that let him see that the Cardassians were lying to starfleets faces.

Not necessarily. It's entirely possible to be right about something purely by accident and for the entirely wrong reasons. To use an example, Person A might be suspicious that Person B is conducting criminal activity for racist reasons: "Everyone knows all X are thieves". And it might be that Person B really is a thief, but that has nothing to do with why Person A accused them of that. In Maxwell's case, his personal paranoia might have made him see something innocuous, that Starfleet Intelligence also saw but justifiably wrote off as routine. Picard, for instance, saw the same evidence but didn't jump to the same conclusion. It was only the Cardassians' actions afterword that shed a new light on the previous activities. Going back to the example, Person A, in his racist assumptions about Person B, might have driven Person B's car off the road in an attempt to stop him from carrying out more thefts. And when emergency services respond, they happen to find Person B's car contains stolen items.

@@keith6706 right, the speech at the end makes clear Picard knows they must have weapons or something equally as sensitive due to the privacy shields. But Picard also knows that unprovoked attacks cannot happen between two powers at peace with one another. So Picard chooses the larger consideration even though he knows Maxwell was probably right after all.

Detmer's trauma is so real and visceral for me. I'm a pilot and I have unspecified anxiety and depression, and just the idea of being a pilot with mental illness seems to be a huge taboo across the airline industry. Watching Detmer having to struggle with her trauma, then admitting she needs help, and being able to come out on top because she sought out that help, it gives me a little hope for the idea that pilots can admit when they aren't doing well, and that trauma and mental illness can be treated with dignity and respect instead of shunned the way it is now.

hey, you do a big job keeping a lot of people safe. its ok to be stressed out by that. being responsible for life should have a weight to it. i cant tell you to not let it get you down but try to remember that those people trust you with their lives for a reason. and that reason is that you have proven you can be trusted with them. and its not in spite of you anxieties. your concern for them is a part of what keeps them safe and whole. and i want you to know i am grateful for that anxiety, for a pilot that double and triple checks like i compulsively would. i am grateful for you. my uncle pat was a combat pilot in vietnam. dropped napalm. then he got into a test program for a little ground support plane you mightve heard of, the a10. he retired and flew 747s until desert storm and came back to do gun runs and stuck around into the early days of the full night vision cockpit. man is a tank eater. back in 98 one of his squadron mates from vietnam was finally identified and disinterred from the tomb of the unknown soldier and given a personal burial. pat was on that flight and screamed while that man went down. he was in town for a holiday when that came on tv, it was pretty big news at the time. i had never seen him cry but he did right then and there. it tore him up. he said it had eaten at him for decades not knowing what had happened to that man. and that it hurt almost as much that he wasnt there now with the rest of the squadron to carry him to his own grave. the best, bravest most fiery-spirited pilots feel what you feel. you dont have to be ashamed. just get out there and soar. let the world fall away and fly into the wild blue yonder. godspeed captain.

That’s so important. My brother was turned down when he tried to take his first steps getting a pilot’s license because, no joke, he told his GP one time about being depressed as a teenager. He said he’d regretted ever opening up about it back then because it didn’t get him anything at the time anyway. But societal pressures like that, which keep people bottling things up for fear that talking about them, are actually far more dangerous than silly shit like “oh they have depression so they’ll probably just take the aircraft into a nose dive on a whim” >.

My favorite example is in Generations after Picard breaks down crying about his nephew Renee being burn to death in a fire and Troi says to Picard, "I didn't realize he meant so much to you." Great video as always, Steve! It made me think about this topic differently. I suspect the ethos of "duty-first-at-the-expense-of-personal-health" may have originally come from Roddenberry, maybe even subconsciously. Roddenberry was in the military, of course, and served in World War II. And he was a member of a generation that did not have easy access to mental health care. Star Trek changed a lot, of course, but the ideas about Starfleet officers and how they are and how they act still all stem from how they were set up in the original series. I think it's thanks to a new generation of writers that we are now in "Discovery", "Picard", and even "Lower Decks", seeing real explorations of trauma and recovery.

6:04 Can't help but think about the time that Spock had to trick Kirk into issuing an order for an unnamed member of the Enterprise crew to go on shore leave "effective immediately", only for Kirk to find out he was the unnamed crew member. Apparently Spock didn't have the authority, nor did McCoy, to order Kirk to take a damned break, though that got remediated by the time of TNG as at least once (I think twice) Picard is ordered by the CMO to take leave.

He was almost excited to be condemning the rest of the Captains and flag officers sitting on the trial board to death as well. "Officers and gentlemen, captains all! Next series title based on this video: Star Trek: The Veterans Administration. I think it's important to reflect on the ethos in which Trek was birthed in the mid-60's. We were in the middle of project Gemini, the astronauts were persons whom we all admired, who dared not show any cracks in the armor because doing so was professional suicide.

A good example is in Contagion, where the bridge crew and Wesley witness another Galaxy-class starship, the Yamato, have a warp core breach and explode in front of them, with no survivors, a kind of space 9/11. That ship had over 1,000 people and (like the Enterprise) families and children on board. Wesley goes to Picard's ready room and asks how they can all seem so calm about it, and Picard just shrugs it off, says they're trained to deal with it, and the trauma of having watched the entire Yamato crew be killed is never mentioned again. In fact, I think when speaking to Wesley Picard even says something along the lines of an individual death being a tragedy... but obviously not 1,000 people on board the Yamato is a statistic. Picard doing some space Stalining.

I recently picked up the Modiphius TTRPG and when you start looking at the star maps and warp factors from various sources it’s pretty clear that at anything below warp 9 even a very short trip is a week or more. Thank you, yes! This was the very sort of comment I was looking through here to see - or make myself if I didn't find. For a TV show, it's no good showing all the mundane day-to-day stuff that provides all the opportunities for having time off to deal with all the life altering events that transpire on-screen. Even many episodes lead off with a Captain's Log saying "we're in the middle/end of a three month survey of Blah-blah sector...." where, clearly, nothing of great importance has happened. A very important point to make! ^_^ Also: yay for TTRPGs!

You don't even need to do that: just look at the episodes themselves. Taking TNG as an example, aside from a few episodes which might have a montage covering a period of time, or ones where the characters are explicitly said to be constantly working on a specific issue over a period of time, the viewer only sees what these characters are up to for 19 hours over the course of an entire year (44 minutes x 26 episodes). That's a lot of time to be doing something else.

Dealing with trauma is different for everyone. Many people find getting back to work comforting as it gives them a sense of normalcy. This is especially true for people that tend to define themselves by what they do. Captain Picard for instance, seems to think of himself mainly as Captain. This personality trait is shown in the episode Family. When visiting France his friend offers him a job. Picard seems to really consider it until he realizes he would never really be happy being anything other than Captain. This is also seems to be one aspect of the show Picard. It seems he doesn't feel like himself unless he is commanding a ship. For someone so defined by what they do, getting back to it is stabilizing and comforting. It seems to me, the type of people that go into Star Fleet are the type of people that would largely define themselves by what they do. It's the kind of job that would draw that type of personality.

Trip goes through all that with no time off or counseling because Enterprise doesn't depict people in the 22nd century going on adventures but a fictionalized historical holoadventure series that Riker plays to relax. The idea being that the person running the program captains the new ship (that they name) and guides its crew into doing the right thing by stopping them from behaving like they're from the US in the early 2000s, but Riker just wanted to relax and cook so he named the captain after a historical figure and let the program run amok while he cooked holographic food

Something to add on is the complete failure even when Star Fleet tried to help. Paper Moon where they let Nog completely lose himself in the Vic Fontaine holosuite program and it takes Vic turning himself off to get him out. The fact that they let Nog get so lost in the program is not a good way of helping him cope with the trauma. Then look at all the horrible advice Troi gives out during TNG, and how many times she made situations worse Maybe it is better to just get back to work then going through the sham of counseling that Star Fleet puts forward.

I would also like to point out that the whole going on despite all the horrible things actually is a necessity, short recovery times usually actually worsen the mental effects if you go back to command/fighting afterwards. As such you would needs multiple weeks or months of recovery each time, or otherwise you're actually making it worse by giving them a short time of relief. Keeping them close to the action, causing them to not think about it for a long period of time before giving them one long moment of multiple months of recovery is more effective and efficient comparitively, in addition to keeping them having less chance of completely breaking down for months each time.

On the "encouraging to take time" front: It forms a big part of the development of Pike in "The Cage". The theme of the CO that (as Pike is described) treats everyone as a human being except himself when it comes to recovery and recuperation resurfaces at the beginning of "Shore Leave" (with Kirk being the crew member that refuses to take time for himself). "Shore Leave" makes it clear that a crew member that is suffering and can hurt others because of it can be "sent ashore".

I don't really think we can totally judge the federation. There are generally large gaps of time between episodes so there is a lot of downtime offscreen that we aren't shown. On top of that shows tend to focus on ships that generally operate at the edge of federation territory doing the most exciting/dangerous work. It wouldn't surprise me if to get on these ships the crew is picked specifically for their mental fortitude and ability to spring back from trauma while the less able star fleet officers and crew are put in less dangerous positions like starbases or on internal patrol ships.

The Emanations episode always stuck with me, exactly for the reasons described. It was honestly one of the first times I’d seen any commanding officer demand that a subordinate take time off to reflect and properly heal from a traumatic experience. I always thought it was good that they put Picard in his ready room at the end of Best of Both Worlds. While, unfortunately, they make it clear he's back being in command, it at least kinda felt like he's taking it a bit easy, well, as much as Picard is able to take anything easy. Troi or not, you know he's just not going to recuperate in his quarters or on the holodeck. On the other hand, knowing Picard, he could just be in the ready room because he doesn't want anyone seeing the "weakness" of his bandages. It's interesting how much toxic masculinity Picard has going on despite being the more, I dunno, diplomatic and cerebral of the captains.

There's a number of reasons I can think of for this, why Starfleet is not a normal employer. in the TOS era, it was more like the ship was out for five years at a go. The might not have a chance to change crew or have a proper shore leave. The characters we follow, most often, are the most experienced bridge officers. This can be inferred as being the best talent on the ship. I'm sure Scotty has a fine assistant chief engineer, but let's face it - when the chips are down and she's gonna blow - we need Scotty. So being so far out, and meeting with regular dangers and weird, one can imagine how Scotty barely gets time off. Combine the two and you have the same situation that's plagued navy sailors going back centuries. It's not just a job, it's a life. I think another factor is the yo-yoing starfleet does (or has to do) between being a benevolent exploratory organization, and a full-blown military organization. Really, I'm surprised it took them so long before ship's counsellor became an actual required position on starships.

"The Changeling" gets me. Scotty dies and is revived and Uhura has her mind wiped and has to relearn everything! Either could possibly be a career ending event. As you say, there's no sense of the between episodes, so maybe they had some shore leave. Maybe they spent it together. Maybe that's why they're so chummy (flirty, even) in TFF.

I fully expected this episode to just be a run down of O'Brian's career.

The Wounded was the only episode my father ever watched with me. Dad retired as a full colonel and served three tours in Vietnam. He said that based on this episode, he would be pleased to serve with Picard as a fellow officer. There is no other fictional officer about whom my father said anything similar.

New to the channel. Damn you make good videos, insightful analyses of topics other youtubers seem not to grasp to the same extent. Amazing how Star Trek can serve as a launchpad to discuss just about any sociopolitical issue (or maybe that's more a credit to your ability to elevate the commentary surrounding the show). Keep em coming!!

With TNG/DS9, depending on how long the story takes, there's roughly 2 weeks between episodes, on average. So there's some time for a little bit of leave... But, yeah; it's very Royal Navy circa 1790...

The first time I really noticed this was in Voyager when Kim ended up on the duplicate Voyager. I mean yeah same ship and all, but he still knew that everyone on his other ship was dead. Yet he smiles not 30 seconds after. So crazy.

There was that time that Kirk's brother got killed and his nephew nearly died. But at the end of the episode Kirk and Bones is laughing and joking about Spocks Vulcan eyes and hearing..

You should have this conversation with the US Navy. Too many of my shipmates have suffered life changing events and not been granted leave due to our ships “operational tempo”. As a corpsman, I and my others corpsman deal with the aftermath of these decisions. Many are driven to depression, anxiety or suicidal ideations. That being said, I would kill to have Councilor Troi on our ship… as long as she actually shows up in uniform. Great video bro. Keep up the awesome content

I'm absolutely flabbergasted at the fact that this video dropped right now. I'm really struggling with my mental health right now, and the message at the end of the video was exactly what I needed right now. Thank you for doing what you do.

This video caused me to tear up. Took me a minute to realize why. Some of us were apparently raised by Star Fleet. Through pain and trauma and abuse, I was trained, I mean raised, to "suck it up, buttercup" and "don't be a pussy". My damage is still unhealed. It's not just Star Trek but police,.firefighters, my military... and teachers and nurses and paramedics. Thanks for this video. (My wife is watching me now, so I'll stop.) Thanks

What a fantastic, thoughtful essay this video is! The mindset of “work through your sickness” being held up as a virtue is, IMHO, absolutely an artifact of the writers being American. Americans are, frankly, accustomed to abusive work conditions, and as a culture, have been for so long that we don’t see it for what it is. I’m an American who moved to Europe, at my first job here, the first time I came to work with a cold, the boss was like “go home!”, to which I explained “Sorry! In USA, you go to work unless you’re in the hospital.” A year later, another American joined the company, and had the _exact same conversation, practically word-for-word verbatim,_ the first time she had a cold. Over here, it’s not considered a badge of honor to work yourself to the bone. It’s understood that time off (both routine, like evenings and weekends and vacations, and as needed, like sick days) serve to keep you healthy so that you can work well and safely when you’re at work. This doesn’t mean there aren’t workaholics in Europe, and some industries that encourage that, but it’s not the norm.
