Substance Painter is a 3D painting program. Much like Photoshop, it is the industry standard in texturing 3D models, and it employs the same layer-based system. This way, if you already know how to use Photoshop, the transition to Substance Painter will be a lot easier, as many of the tools are the same.
Its main purpose is to create textures for 3D models, which is made extremely easy by the use of advanced masking and procedural texturing tools. The end results you can get working in Substance Painter for a couple of minutes are a lot harder to accomplish with the use of 2D software like Photoshop.

Perpetual licenses for both painter and designer were both on sale for $100 each on steam recently. I would recommend buying the perpetual license before Adobe realizes it should be subscription only

Substance is so powerful! I am tempted to say it's a must have, but it's not. Lots of artists create incredible work without it. I guess it comes down to your own workflow, style and work.

I feel it strange that Stylized Station neglected to mention 3DCoat, even when they showcased art made using 3DCoat Yekaterina Bourykina at 3:53. I feel that 3DCoat is actually a great alternative to Substance Painter.

I've been really struggling with UVing and would love to get a clear pipeline from hi poly mesh with complex shapes (via zbrush/whatever 3d sculpt program) > lower poly > UVing Obviously specific problems come with specific solutions but a general step by step process would be huge. If you or anyone reading this has any learning suggestions I'd really appreciate it

Shit, welcome to modeling and CG work. Most 3D packages have LOD support but in the beginning Its always a nightmare to find the right software/pipeline to use and what the best is one for you. You'd have to have extensive knowledge on most programs to even know what you prefer more, on top of that, the potenial millions of combinations of software that, Its overwhelming. I suggest keeping things simple and using as few software packages as you can, then things will hopefully "click" and youll be confident in whatever software suits you. But man, its a really hard question to answer. Alot off regular Modelling "working" studio artists will usually have to switch to whatever the company has in house which suck.

@@d3tach3d Hey I appreciate the response. I guess I was a bit ambiguous with my previous request. I’m specifically struggling with UVing and the process of doing it quickly and effectively. I would like to see essentially the “set up” process that someone like the person behind Stylized Station here uses prior to texturing a model. I’ve edited the original so as to reflect my intentions more clearly

no it doesnt work like photoshop other than layers, the basics are worthless, you can do a much better job at 3d painting with just photoshop basics than SP basics, it's the advanced that i cared about and that's where SP is doing an awful job, the tools are there somewhere, you just have to pray to the right gods to find them, i am spending like 80% of my time fixing issues and googling where menus are hidden instead of working, very different from when i learned photoshop, it was the opposite sure if you just wanna texture a boring simple box the basics are enough but when you get into transparencies it's like delving into secret arcane arts

I still prefer 3D coat. Simple tasks seems to be very cumbersome to accomplish with Substance Painter. for example how to scale / rotate a smart material without editing every single layer one by one. Also when you import textures and you need to select the resource type, I don't remember how to set every resources at once to "texture". Creating materials also seems not really user friendly: . I don't understand how to set normal map intensity(or any map). I'm finding it very unintuitive.

Huh? The two applications complement each other. They are addressing different needs and use cases. There seems to be trend to prefer one thing over another which in my opinion is quite damaging. Never hand paint again, trust procedural over everything. This is not how great things are made.
@DavesChaoticBrain
@DavesChaoticBrain 2 жыл бұрын
@@andyedwardson9710 The thing is, I'm in Canada. The Perpetual versions are $170 each and the subscription is $26 a month. After spending way too much on software I'm still not using frequently enough to justify, and having what feels like 7,000 subscriptions to things, I'm extremely apprehensive over spending more money on something I just might not use that often. So I'd like to start with one and then preferably only get the other once I determine I actually need it. Hopefully that will be at least a few months gap.
@andyedwardson9710
@andyedwardson9710 2 жыл бұрын
@@DavesChaoticBrain Understood. They both have trials so that should help you make a decision. However examine your needs. If you want to interactively “paint” a 3D model then painter is very satisfying and does that job nicely . Designer is very much driven from its Node system which feels more like programming the material pipeline. I joined the 3D coloring book course and whilst it helped me make a decision it was not until I saw this tutorial and tried it myself the light bulbs went on. Good luck on your journey.
