Yeah for sure, they sounded more mature than her Eras before during the 1989. But her performance during Speak Now was amazing even without her mature voice😩
@twobluestripes
@twobluestripes 9 ай бұрын
I think that her vocals have been slowly improving her entire career actually, but I specifically noticed a difference on her RECORDINGS between Speak Now and Red eras, as a non-fan at that time who heard only her singles! So it’s cool to hear the comparisons here starting with all these Red performances, which I felt was a time with really a huge leap in her vocal improvement to begin with. I think she’s worked with vocal coaches her whole career, but of course all vocal coaches are not created equal. And the point about health and stamina, especially with her ED, was an excellent point as well. I think the 3+ hour set for Eras is remarkable… she’s sung the majority of it live this whole tour leg and there’s only a few nights she’s seemed hoarse (the video clip for Trouble actually in this video she seems hoarse, could be from a night she was sick or coughing) or relied on her track for a few notes. She’s definitely made choices for what descants and notes and runs she does on Eras Tour to preserve her voice through the set, though, so I don’t think the choice of which notes she’s doing is as much of an indicator. For instance, she doesn’t sing the high “oooh” notes in the Cruel Summer chorus, she has the audience do it. But she clearly loves some of these big belt moments (always has since she was younger, and loves doing “the pose”), so she’s picked which ones for this tour she’s going to go all out for (Don’t Blame Me is probably the biggest and has been her most beloved belt moment by fans since it came out). It’s also interesting to me to compare awards show’s performances to her own concerts. I would actually be interested to compare some of these really bad televised performances with good fan video (not official video) of the tour that occurred FOR that album, same year or close to it. She has said she gets VERY nervous for awards performances or televised appearances, probably because she doesn’t feel like the audience is on her side or there to see her, compared to an audience full of fans at her own shows. She also is kind of overly sensitive/hard on herself when it comes to how the rest of the industry, critics, etc, see her and receive her music- very praise/recognition driven. There’s an awards show performance from 1989 era where she felt she did so poorly that she was back in her seat, crying afterwards and her friend Selena Gomez comforts her. And those performances are one-offs; you may or may not get brief soundchecks, but with no crowds, the dynamics change. It’s not crewed by your own people, it’s not your own mics and tech, and you and your band don’t get the amount of practice and multiple performances to get accustomed to the sound and hearing yourself. I don’t expect for every note to be perfect from any live performance, but I think performers will always sound best live on their OWN tour where they have more control over those factors and any kinks are worked out after the first couple stops (I also learned my lesson when subscribing to the Broadway tours at my local performing arts center: don’t subscribe to the first few nights, pick a night that will be later in the run!)

Pre-premier thoughts: She’s definitely improved dramatically over time with vocal lessons and confidence (people REALLY underestimate her vocal range too-it drives me nuts), but I think Televised performances are her Achilles heel. She gets so nervous and has choked a lot in the past. She’s best at her own concerts where she’s comfortable, but like any singer, there will always be mistakes. Happens to even the best.

Her singing has improved IMMENSELY. As a longtime fan, I was in genuine disbelief at how good her vocals are this tour around!! She's NEVER lip-synched, and that cost her some really harsh criticism but opened up the door to massive improvement. Her vocals were already quite good around 2019 but often still strained and poorly supported. I guess after the pandemic and upon planning this massive 3-hour show she was like, "Wait, I gotta do this better." And she sure did! Props to her for working her ass off and props to whoever brought out all this potential in her. I can now say with my full chest that, on top of being an exceptional songwriter and performer, she is a Good Singer!

While Taylor's biggest strength is her lyricism and she's obviously nowhere near Whitney Houston in terms of range/vocals, she can sing. It's all about the emotions she conveys through her songs. Her improvement over the years amazes me, and I LOVE her lower register (which I don't think was that present/developed on her first few albums) ❤Also, it's weird to me how the listeners only consider someone a great singer if they can belt. I would say she definitely had more vocal training during the year she “disappeared” and had time to recover her health. because although some performances from her “reputation” era isn’t the greatest (compared to today), it was definitely a vocal style change that was incredibly noticeable when she came back onto the scene. she always attempted belting these strong notes (and definitely pushed herself at times), but she really didn’t hold them until reputation, where she was recovering & her demeanor became more solidified (because she used to be so noticeably nervous once she began leaving the country charts & performing at award shows). I personally think her growth in vocal ability is why her re-recordings are doing SO well; because you could hear her struggle a bit in the studio, but nowadays, those same notes were easily delivered. It’s the same great material, but the delivery has been incredibly noted

There was a dramatic improvement from 1989 to Reputation tour, which is well explained by her dealing with the ED and starting to properly nourish her body. You can see she has more muscle and is built like an athlete now. My best friend sings opera and has said working hard on his body, especially his core, has made a huge difference in his ability to perform. I think she also did herself a huge favor by writing more songs in her lower range for her more recent albums, especially Folklore and Evermore. She sounds so so good performing songs like My Tears Ricochet because she's not using her head voice and forcing it. I'll admit I was not really a fan early on in her career because she had the voice of a little girl and I couldn't really relate to the high school music. I was in my mid 20s and it just wasn't my thing. I accidentally listened to some of her album Lover in 2019 and suddenly realized I had incorrectly written her off. It's been fantastic looking back at her career growth. I also really appreciate the re-records with her much improved voice. The Red album is so much better and can't wait to hear 1989.

I am a TS fan, and I grew up performing. You're right. It's obvious she's gotten vocal coaching, which I hope non-singers know is nothing to be ashamed of. (She's delivering for her fans, which is something not all popstars do live...) Few people have the raw talent to belt, especially while moving around, and live performance nerves are no joke. After seeing several live performances (last was the Reputation Tour), I wondered how heavily she was Melodyne-ing her albums or if it was just the live aspect shaking her. But she's grown tremendously as a vocalist (and it seems based on interviews and the doc that she's more comfortable in her own skin generally, which helps), and I've been so excited to see her really nail the notes in clips from Eras. She has always had so much talent, and it takes a self-aware and dedicated artist to get coaching and further hone their skills when they're already famous with a ravenous fan base. *That* is being a pro, and she's a pro.

I love to see vocal coaches discussing and encouraging live performance modifications. Whether that's staying on a note, or hitting it then scaling down to keep our voices where it's strong and supported. It's always better imo to stay where your voice is stable on a given day, and like you said every show and every day your body will be a little different. Counterintuitively, being open to on the fly modification helps maintain a consistent performance by virtue of minimizing risk of injury, etc.

Her televised performances are good but she gets nervous and it can affect her performance. Her live shows in person are so much more in her comfort zone and she KILLS IT. The Eras Tour was the best show I've ever ever been to. Also having to remember that she's been doing this for 17 years and she's grown so much in her talent and skill and her voice is so much more mature. As for the 2018 to 2023 shift, something to keep in mind: Up until 2018, she was touring every year or every 2 years, consistently. After the reputation tour, she planned to have a tour for Lover but the pandemic quickly shut everything down. So she essentially had a 5 year break from touring to work on her voice, to rest, to focus on other aspects of growth and I think that's REALLY shown.

I love this overview! I'm sure it's difficult to critique a lot of the nuance in performances when there is so much additional sound (and those sounds are also not consistent across comparison performances from like 8-10 years ago), but you crushed it. I thought this was really cool to watch and you totally nailed it with the variations and growth in her performances. Welcome to Taylor Nation - the Swifties are happy to have you!

It makes sense that they can burn 1000’s of calories during a show- esp when she’s performing for 3hrs at a time. I notice she’s lost some weight since she started her tour, but looks totally healthy still. Not too thin, so hopefully she can keep killing her vocals! Also, it’s adorable when you’re proud of her for hitting those notes that you know she’s worked on!

she lost some weight long before tour started, but it's still healthy. She's not too thin and if you see some closer pictures of her she actually grew some muscles. I think she lost some weight just cause of a lot of exercise while she was preparing for the tour, but since then her weight is consistent and still healthy. I don't think there is anything to worry about.

19:57 Just listening casually to her music, you wouldn’t necessarily pick up on it, but a lot of her backing vocals are way more belty, and those are the parts she likes to sing live rather than the melody (probably because it’s more interesting than the same chorus three times, especially since she tends to build those backing vocals more and more throughout the progression of a song)
