It's time for season three of Teen Titans 2003, folks. I'm formatting this one a bit different, but I hope you enjoy it! Next time we'll go over the Cyborg-centric episodes.
Also, this is the first time I've ever had someone else edit my work. Thank you so much to everyone who's watching and, in particular, for everyone who supports me on patreon. Without you, I don't think I would have been able to afford to have this done by someone else, and since my computer broke there was no way for me to do it on my own. Plus, this is just a good thing in general: it means I'll hopefully be able to get these done faster than ever and, besides, I think the editor has done a better job than I did.
The editor's name is Chris and you can check out some of his work on his KZfaq channel here: / bleachshippu5678
As usual, here are some other links.

Then there's the music for this one. This time, every piece of background music you heard was from the same channel: ChordsBoy. They're making some fantastic music over there, so be sure to check them out. It was awesome of them to let me use their music. Here's a link to their channel: / @chordsboy

Probably my favorite touch of Haunted is how when Robin is chasing Slade through the forest, Slade doesn't affect the trees he lands on and you can see the rain doesn't hit him the way it does Robin. When watching it my brother knew from there that Slade wasn't real.

When I was a kid, I always wondered about when BB Tells Raven "you think you're alone, but you're not". On the surface he's clearly saying "we're your friends", but I wondered if the deeper implication was that he himself sometimes feels creepy and outcast due to being a green changeling, but he deals with it in a different way. By putting on a carefree happy exterior, rather than a cold reserved one.
@AllGirlsHaveFlaws
@AllGirlsHaveFlaws 5 жыл бұрын
H3Vtux Good point! I also wondered about that. I think it can also reach to mental health because teens often have some kind of issue and he could be reminding Raven that everyone has their issues (especially as teen superheros who often have a dead or evil family member or two). I personally think beast boy is very insecure but uses his goofiness to cover it up. Regardless, I’ve been thinking and I might have found evidence to back up your thought. In the episode where BB gets mistaken for an alien’s pet dog, he felt like an outcast because his friends couldn’t hang out with him as well as how the girls he flirted with turned him down; and the stinger is that when he turned into a dog to catch the attention of some girls who were playing with a dog, they thought he was weird looking and didn’t want to be near him. I think this took place before the Malchior episode so maybe that could be what beast boy referenced in that comment to Raven. I think it also provides some parallels between B.B. and Raven, regardless of the actual episode order.

Yeah, same. I understand that it's not exactly an easy task to shove in an entire planet, it's ecosystem, it's way-of-life, everything that makes it tick in a eleven-minute episode, but a few shots of villages, people that is not connected directly with Starfire and just some variation that is not a palace would have gone a long way.

When I was a kid, I never really noticed it, but as an adult I really appreciate the subtleties of Raven and Robin's relationship. As the two reserved members of the group, it makes sense that they would connect and support each other in a more nuanced way than they would with the other members, and this is especially emphasized in the next season (which happens to be my absolute favorite storyline-wise). To me, it looks like Haunted and Spellbound set up their relationship in the next season.

Agreed. I too am really looking forward to his analysis of the Trigon Arc. What I love about Birthmark and the return of Slade is that it is literally Robin's nightmare coming true, but rather than going after him, Slades going after his friend, which might just he worse from his view.
@Cataphract3
@Cataphract3 5 жыл бұрын
It's more of a friendship imo. Also, for me the fact that Robin was the one chasing after Raven in the Trigon conclusion felt a little forced to me. Like they never seemed to interact on this level before that, whereas Beast Boy and Cyborg and Starfire all had a lot more bonding moments with Raven. But then again, maybe I just hate the RobinxRaven pairing with a burning passion lol.
@nevermind8675
@nevermind8675 5 жыл бұрын
I never implied that what they have is more than friendship, just that I liked the interactions that they do have. They might not have had major development episodes before season 4, but season 4 does rectify it by focusing on it, as well as Raven's character. I don't really ship anything from TT, but I do prefer these subtle moments over some of the over-the-top Robin/Starfire relationship episodes, you know?

I actually loved the Red X episode. A large part of Teen Titan's charm is how it can shift between serious and comedic tones; and I don't need an episode to go all in on one mood. I think the Red X hit a good balance, but that's just my opinion. And I think keeping Red X mysterious and not really delving into his background kept the episode more focused on Robin's point of view and state of mind. Love these videos!

Exactly! As soon as he said there was conflicting tones I thought to myself: Well, but what if they're trying to balance these conflicting tones so that there's not too much seriousness or comedy? Obviously they could do it poorly but still.

Insert Haunted is arguably the best episode of the series here. Okay but for me the interesting bit is the character development in Robin. In "Nevermore" you notice how adamant Robin is that he will NOT bother Raven if she wants to be alone, because that's what HE would want someone else to do for him if he wanted to be alone. And now he understand that sometimes you have to push a little harder to get others to open up to you and that it's important for people to push him as well. Even if it might be a bother or draining. He recognizes that this might be something he needs to do for Raven now and rather than leaving her alone, like he had snapped at his friends to do for him. He tries to be there for her and understands the difference between meddling and his friends worrying over him. Amazing review! I'm jumping on these everytime you upload like there's no tomorrow!

And can we talk about how perfect Robin and Raven are for each other? Because I rewatched teen titans recently and they have so many little moments that it had to be on purpose. Robin literally catching her when she falls CONSTANTLY, the way he respects her boundaries and understands her better than anyone else on the team. Her going into his mind, "We have a bond" "we are connected" THE WHOLE TRIGON STORY WAS BASICALLY ROBRAE FEST. Sigh okay I'm done. I'm just very passionate about these fictional characters😂

Casually inserts that one of the clips Raven saw of Robin's mind was of trapeze artists in the circus (the Flying Grayson's) and that there is a good chance that she A) might be the only Titan to know his true identity at this point and B) Probably saw his parents die. Not that CN would have been able to go that far but...good chance. I did not intend to start the RobinxRae shipapalooza but hey, I'm here for it. Proceed.

I think their relationship is further influenced by Robin's relationship with Batman. Batman ain't exactly the most cheerful guy to hang around with, but if there is anyone who knows how to breach his exterior, it is Robin. Batman, like Raven, feels incredibly guilty about something in his past that is not entirely his fault, yet made him into who he is. For Batman, it's his guilt about his parents that drives him to shut people out of his life, fight crime and ultimately try to make the world better. For Raven, it's the prophecy that she will destroy the world that causes her to do much the same before her destiny is fulfilled. While Robin does not know exactly what Raven is going through, he perhaps sees a similar struggle within her that he sees in Bruce, and consequently knows how to talk and relate to her.

One part of Haunted that I think is creepy looking back on it is the part where Slade is beating Robin around the end of the episode and says “you always knew it would end this way.” cause it’s all in Robins head he’s kind of admitting that he feared being killed by Slade. I don’t know how much sense that makes because I had trouble phrasing it. I just think its kinda creepy (and sad tbh)

preface: starfire is my favorite character, hands down, no question. for the starfire episode in season three, i feel like you missed a lot of the prerequisite statfire subtext that made the episode so great. i mentioned these feelings in an earlier comment, but i'll reiterate the ideas. starfire, in season one, has to fight off kitty from robin. by actively fighting kitty with her own power instead of trying to emulate kitty's feminine drama, starfire becomes more powerful emotionally, as she has learned how to protect the things she cares about. in the following episode, starfire goes through a physical metamorphosis that reflects how she has become more emotionally strong- that episode also had the benefit of showing that all the titans really care about starfire and would scour till the ends of the universe to find her. this helps bring a sense of justice to the idea that starfire is the heart of the team. likewise, all of starfire's plots involve her (the heart) having to leave, or grow more powerful emotionally. i can understand if you don't like this kind of episode. i love this episode because it shows that starfire is becoming an actual contender to the throne of tamaran. she isn't just a princess; she's slowly becoming a queen. blackfire and starfire's main conflict is that starfire is a kinder and more genuine individual than blackfire, and so starfire earns every single thing she gets. unlike blackfire who uses starfire as a gambling chip, starfire is willing to do what's right for her people and her country. this is important because it makes starfire more than just some alien genki girl! she is willing to live out a horrible fate for her people's future but is also ready to contend against the corrupt blackfire! the episode never spells this drama and conflict out into specific terms, which may be where some of the confusion comes from. i feel like you're missing a lot of what makes starfire such a good character. instead of seeing that she's literally strong enough to best blackfire in just one shot (which she wasn't able to do in season one,) you've been focusing on the comedic elements of starfire's character. she and beast boy are more than just comic relief, and i feel like a lot of people ignore how good starfire's unconscious arc was. it's not just that starfire cares about her people- it's that she's willing to fight for them, instead of running away (like she did to earth.) and even at the end of the episode, starfire runs back away to earth! she doesn't even keep the throne she liberated! starfire has much more growing to do before the season ends- that's part of the reason why i feel people ignore starfire. they don't see that she starts of from a place of *total uncertainty,* where she doesn't even know the planet that she lives on! her struggle is one that is characterized by learning how to use one's caring personality to become stronger as an individual.

Ironically enough, my favourite character is Blackfire, there is a lot more to her than meets the eye. Once you know her origin. The reason she hates her sister is that Blackfire was treated very poorly by her parents growing up and was seen as unworthy of the throne despite being the oldest child because she was suffering from an illness that made her struggle with flight from an early age, Starfire. In contrast, was given everything she ever wanted, not only being made Crown Princess, but unlike Blackfire she had the love and affection of her parents. Blackfire is actually a rather tragic villain in my eyes, her actions motivated by her childhood trauma, as well as an obsession to regain what she sees as her birthright. And to prove that she is better than sister at every opportunity

I have to agree with everything you said. Starfire is more complex than what we see. And I think her best strength is comprehension. She's usually the one who is willing to learn from another person to allow herself to grow both stronger and smarter. Her heart is literally her most powerful weapon.

I love Starfire-centric episodes as well, I feel maybe they're just easier to understand for people that can relate to her struggles. Many of them dwelve on her feelings for Robin, and his feelings for her. I loved any episode that had romantic undertones as a kid, and many action cartoons/anime missed those chances to strengthen a romantic plotline before the characters magically got together. Episodes with moments like these are to thank for the natural pace of their relationship's growth, and how exciting it felt for them to finally kiss in the movie. I know a lot of people see romantic subplots as bothersome or cheesy, but I personally love them. Those feelings are part of many people's lives, and realistic portrayals of romantic feelings can make character dynamics feel incredibly real and close to heart.

The Network already banished the show to the internet only so they should have just went full steam. Problem was Korra wasnt as big of a hit as Ang and the network stopped caring and rushed the rest of the episodes in the contract which hurt the show even more. Interesting perspective on the episodes so far but I actually really liked Raven's episode "Spellbound" for the reason you liked Robin's episode "Haunted". "Spellbound" just cut way too deep to me what with going through the same problems of really bad social anxiety, not fitting in with anyone at school, and being thought of as "weird". When Raven gets yelled at by Beast Boy calling her "Creepy" and Raven quietly replied with "I'm not creepy, just different...." That totally got to me, it felt way too surreal to me and it cemented Raven as my number 1 Teen Titan character. Granted I didn't get tricked by a magic man turned dragon in a book but still LOL Anyway, I do agree that Haunted is easily one of the best episodes from a writing & presentation perspective. I won't lie, when I first saw the episode as a middle schooler, I thought it was annoying because I thought Robin was being an annoying jackass but then when I re-watched it years later, I got what the episode was trying to convey with it and I ended up really liking it. The whole "Cause and consequence" thing you mentioned which totally brought a dark realism to the Robin's dilemma. And the Starfire episode, yeah it was a pretty pointless episode since we didn't get to learn more about her people to make it all the more impactful when Starfire decides to go back to Earth. The only cool thing about the episode for me was just seeing Blackfire again. She's a bitch for what she did but I just thought she had a cool looking design and awesome voice LOL (Still surprised that Hynden Walch, voice actress for Starfire also voiced Blackfire and even Madam Rouge. Woman has incredible range!) Anyway, great review, looking forward to part 6!

Haunted is SO good! I love when shows dive into characters and what makes them tick and define their motivations, etc. As for your feelings on Betrothed, I think this episode was about fleshing out the Starfire/Robin dynamic much more so than world-building (which I also would have loved to see). And Spellbound is actually one of my favorites, because I can relate: I'm extremely introverted and it takes a while for me to open up to others, and I love how you pointed out that Robin actually DOES knock on her on her door and try to talk to her...and she refuses. Maybe she felt like a burden and didn't want to bother him, or that he wouldn't understand or want to (considering how Beast Boy treated her at the beginning of the episode, it kinda makes sense that she wouldn't). I also love how the episode showed how desperately she craves a connection that she latched on to this "man" without much thought/hesitation. She just wants to be accepted, and it comes beautifully full circle with BB and that hug. I liked the Red X ep, mainly because of the moral questions and the potential it has for future stories. Can't wait for the next part! (:

Haunted is and will always be the greatest episode of the entire show in my book. Us the audience know that Slade really broke Robin. Robin fears and resents Slade, and is haunted (no pun intended) by the idea that they're similar. To see the other titans begin to question Robin's sanity, and Starfire being the only one who dosn't belive that he's finally snapped. And then we have Robin realize that Slade really was all in his mind. He gives Starfire a weak smile and a, "It's ok,.. Starfire.. It's okay." before collapsing in her arms. Realizing that Robin gave himself all those injuries and could have died, absolutley terrifying. It's a deep Pshycological explanation of Robin's character, and it really makes him human. At the end of the day, all of us have our own Slades, worries that haunt us in the darkest corners. We all have regrets, fears, and anger that torment us. Sometimes we wind up like Robin, being "Haunted" by the past, and unable to move in a better direction. Not everyone is able to confront these fears, and truly defeat them. And that, is why Haunted is a masterpiece, and greatest episode of this show.

I loved Haunted when I first watched the series a couple months ago. My absolute favorite episode. Its direction, writing, mood, everything. It was so well done. It was the best way to deal with Robin's obsession with bringing Slade down IMO. The performances of Scott Menville and Ron Perlman are top notch here too. No pun intended, but I think Starfire subtlety shines in this episode. Seeing her cry after Robin grabs her arm, and the confusion in her voice, "You are hurting me" gives me the feels every time. Not to mention how persistent she is in helping Robin out. It came through shooting him in the back to bring him to Titans Tower for testing, denying that Robin is not normal and insisting there is a cause to his issue, and hastily moving to recover him as he says, "It's okay, Starfire. It's okay." Not to mention she affirms that Robin is never alone when he feels like he's the only one who thinks Slade is out there and trying to stop him. It's one of the many reasons why Star is my favorite character. Her unwavering compassion for her friends is so awesome, and she will do anything she can to help them. Your points on Betrothed make a lot of sense. The planet and culture of Tamaran are not as fleshed out as they could have been, plus Starfire is getting married to a blob. I feel like if it was another Tamaranean like what the comics did, it would have been more compelling and it could flesh out Robin and Starfire's relationship a lot better than the episode did. A two-parter could have made it more interesting. I do not know if anyone else feels this way, but Star feels tremendously underused in this show. She got amazing episodes when they focused on her (How Long is Forever?), but I feel like they did not know how to use her most of the time. She seemed to be used as comic relief with her misunderstanding of English syntax and bubbly nature, when in reality, her strong episodes made me wanna see what else could be done with her character. She sounded so strong and wise. They felt few and far between. It sucks because I love Star and how loving and sweet she is to the team, and her character is not as developed as it could have been. Her character is the one that truly hurts since she was the only Titan who never got a season to herself.

You made a great point about character death. Despite the shock value and ingenuity Game of Thrones had in killing characters for shock value, I think most characters died without much consequence.
@korralations
@korralations 5 жыл бұрын
Game of Thrones (and especially the asoiaf books) is known for characters dying WITH consequence. Robert dies and there’s a battle for the throne. Ned dies and his children are motivated for revenge, etc...
@Lowart

Hm... I found, at least earlier on in the series, that the character deaths in Game of Thrones had a lot of impact, especially in the first and third books. I do agree, however, that those books mishandle so much about conflict in books 4 and 5, so I think I understand what you're getting at. I'm happy you enjoyed that point though! Thanks for watching ^_^
@justafaniv1097
@justafaniv1097 5 жыл бұрын
Semi agree. There did seem to be consequences in books/seasons 1-3 but since books 4 & 5 were written to take place at the same time, I dont think there has been enough time to see the consequences. The show by contrast is a different beast entirely, with the most egregious example probably being that an entire great house is assassinated by kinslaying bastards and nobody bats an eye but are perfectly willing to work with the usurpers.
@yumi25390

Yeah, the first few deaths were great. Ned in particular was absolutely shocking, I've never seen a character with that much screen time get axed. But over time, it definitely lost it's edge. It's good to know the main characters don't have plot armor (although it's getting pretty obvious which ones are going to make it to the end), but when you go too far in the other direction, it's hard to get overly invested.

See, another vibe I get from that Mad Mod episode is that they can make plans just fine without Robin. That's not to say Robin isn't an essential part of the Titans, he certainly is, but he's not necessarily always NEEDED to create strategy and enact effective tactics. He's not the only person who can best direct everyone, they're capable of directing themselves when they remember they can. Now I don't think that's a direct attack on Robin's character by the writers or anything, I just find it really interesting to explore since Robin does, throughout the series, struggle with his self-esteem and place in the Titans. I just find it a little wink and nudgy, y'know?

For me the Teen Titans animated series was one of those shows growing up where I kept giving it a chance, but with the exception of a few episodes i really didnt like the majority of it. The one with Raven and Malchior was one of the episodes that I really liked though, and one of the few I still remember most of. Looking back on it, the strangest part is that it actually holds even more personal meaning to me, since I actually went through an abusive relationship that was very similar in theme a few years ago; me being very introverted but having a manipulator try to "change" me to "make me happier" only to turn out to be a monster of a human being who only wanted to use me, then got rid of me when i was no longer "useful" to them.

I hope you do the movie Trouble in Tokyo. Great series btw, you got a sub out of me! Edit: As a side note, I think you're missing the point of the Robin and Starfire episodes. Their purpose isn't necessarily to further develop (or flesh-out) characters, they're meant to show that in spite of all of their heroics and duties, Robin and Starfire have a clear interest in one another. There need to be some episodes devoted to showing the complicated relationship between Robin and Starfire. At the end of the day, despite Robin's difficulty to switch off and Starfire's misunderstanding of Earthly customs, both have an undeniable interest in each other romantically that gets somewhat buried in other episodes because of the heavy character development and action. They pepper these episodes throughout the show to remind you that, yes, Robin and Starfire - much like the show - still care deeply for each other even if they can't show it as often because the other important things that are happening or when they need to add episodes for levity to balance out the heavier (ie: Terra) elements of the show. It isn't bad that it fell flat with you, but it does resonate pretty well those that want to see them together.

Looking up the British pop culture references in "Revolution" on the Teen Titans wiki was pretty fun, but there was actually one I noticed that they left out. There was a brief scene where the titans accidentally get in front of a bullseye target that was just like The Who's sign. It was blue on the outside, white in the middle, and red in the center.

"Spellbound" was an episode that really resonated with me, as did Raven in general. I have autism, and with that came some social anxiety. I understand all too well what it's like to feel different just from what you see in others, and how hard it is to reach out to those who don't think or react the same as you do. And sometimes when I felt I could open up, I'd overdo it. I still have that problem as an adult, where I can't always read the situation right, or figure out what to do in response. Raven's natural tendencies are clearly different from those of her friends, and if they want to understand her they can't always compare those tendencies to their own. It's nice to see Beast Boy begin to respect that in the end. He saw what it meant to her to have someone not judge her. And after going through the same thing with Terra, he's able to give her what she needs. Not just comfort, but the knowledge that even thought he won't always understand her, he's somebody she can trust.

All of your thoughts, opinions and reviews have been spot on the whole time There is just one thing (from my point of view) You expect every episode to be better than the last and/or a masterpiece But that's impossible, if you liked one episode, then the next is just a normal episode, it doesn't make it bad, it just makes it a normal episode, instead of one that suverbs our expectations

Amazing video lowart, at the begining I disliked the idea of reviewing the season by types of episodes, but the more I watched the better I was able to understand your decision, it makes it easier to see "the big arc" more profoundly and to separate it from the anvils of the more regular episodes, I commend you for that. On the other hand, this approach might hurt on the study of the season as a whole. But, if your reviews are going to maintain the quality and analytic observation, I'm not going to complain. Amazing video, great idea of separating the season and, I just adore your work, keep doing what you do, it's quite glorious. BTW the editor did an amazing job, if I weren't so broke and had a decent paying job I would totally support you on patreon but sadly I can not, the only thing I can give you is a like and my admiration. Greetings from Chile

Great video can’t wait for the next one. I saw a video by nuxtaku, another youtuber and he gave a meaning to Slade’s evil lair. He said that the gears and cogs represent his plan in motion and that the first time the gears stop turning is when the Titians foil one of his plans or something along those lines. The video was about how to make a relatively weak villain feel overpowered. I look forward to seeing your analysis of the rest of the series.

I have watched the series all the way through, but I still was only about 10 when I did so. So it's nice looking back at episodes I remembered and enjoyed even if you are being critical of them.
