I posted a short on this channel a few months back about how I didn't like Tenacity herbicide. Until then, I didn't realize how much of a cult-like following Tenacity has in the marketplace. The comments that have rolled in since then are somewhat shocking - with one person telling me that Tenacity is the "best weed killer of all-time". I personally don't like Tenacity for the reasons outlined in the video, but I wanted to go over this herbicide for my followers to ensure they are well-informed when selecting products for broadleaf weed control. If you love Tenacity that is great, but in my humble opinion, there are much better options for broadleaf weed control available on the market.

That was well presented! I used "Tenacity" on my cool season type lawn last fall to kill creeping bent grass. It required three applications 2 to 3 weeks apart and it's one of the only selective herbicides that targets bent grass in an existing lawn.

I have seen various sources saying do not use on Bermuda grass. I live in Oklahoma and have used it for the past two years with great results. The only issue I have is I have to put down another application 10 - 12 weeks later. The bleaching effect does last about three weeks. I will try your recommendation and see how long it lasts. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I really do not want to use Pre emerg on my new JG/BBU lwn reno this spring due to root pruning. Yes they say it`s ok but had a bad experience with barricade in the year before reno. There were no roots by aug. and had to do it all over. Then that was a challenge because barricade was still working and stopped seed growth. I did a split app. I guess the positive was i had NO crabgrass or weeds. But also no lawn by late aug. Maybe i will use triad or speed zone and attack as they come. I also learned i should have kept it at 3 inches to promote root growth not 2. cutting the lawn twice a week

I’m totally new to working on my lawn. I didn’t kill any weeds when I started my tall fescue lawn last fall from scratch. And I didn’t use any pre emergent earlier this year. It looks good but there are a lot of weeds growing where I want it to be all tall fescue. And I think the weeds choked a lot of the fescue out. I’m going to over-seed soon….so do I spray the tenacity and then over-seed? If so, after the tenacity works, how do I get the dead weeds out of the way that will be mixed in with the new grass that I’ll get from over-seeding? Because I’m guessing the new grass won’t be ready to be mowed for a while. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 3 ай бұрын
You can apply the tenacity the same time you overseed. Some weeds will sprout but you will see them they will turn white and kind of wilt down. Once your new grass is fully established you can eliminate any weeds with a regular selective herbicide. Good luck!

I thought one of the benefits to using Tenacity was that it was non-toxic to both humans and pets? Sure, there are likely other more effective treatments, but if you're worried about toxicity or are someone who has concerns about carcinogenic herbicides leeching into their well-water supply (my situation), then what other options do you have? I've tried limonene, vinegar, and other natural oil based approaches without great results.
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover Ай бұрын
While Tenacity has a "reduced-risk" status from the EPA, it is still a herbicide. It really comes down to your comfort level and your target weeds when it comes to choosing an effective herbicide. Tenacity still has it's benefits (using at seeding, bentgrass), but I personally would rather make one application of a product that zaps the weeds instead of repeat herbicide applications of Tenacity that does not always fully kill the weeds. At the end of the day this comes down to preference and needs. The point of my video was the fact that many people claim that Tenacity is the "best herbicide ever invented", I am just pointing out that people may need to broaden their horizons when it comes to herbicide needs - especially when I get feedback from people that say they keep applying tenacity monthly to target their weeds. Sorry for the long winded response, just trying to be helpful. Thank you for watching and for your insightful questions!

My sentiment exactly. I laughed so hard reading your comment. I feel your pain, i've felt the pain. Suggestion from a plain 'ol guy; Break open a bag of black earth, or potting mix, let it dry in the sun on a tarp. Sparingly hand spread this dried earth to sligthtly cover your seeds. This will reduce or eliminate your bird issues and, it helps keep the seeds cooler and hold humidity between waterings. You can use peat moss also (way easier to spread if you sun dry it, and you will use less) but make sure to really water it in because the peat will absord lots of water before it saturates. Once wet, peat moss stays wet longer. Keep watering religiously 3 times a day (never at night) until you see germination, then you can move to two waterings per day. This method allowed me to grow new grass in July 2020 during a record breaking heat wave...

I've used Tenacity three times a year (spring-summer) for the past four years. It does eliminate everything except the blue-rye grass, but wish I didn't have to use it every year. I use it slightly above the recommended dose of 2.5 cc/gallon and the lawn has always recovered - - - this far. One trick-- don't fertilize or use iron for at least a month before using Tenacity,. Dark lush green makes it more difficult to see the blue dye. The manufacturers of Tenacity should display the date of manufacture on the b bottle, and stop making the lot number into some code the consumer doesn't know. The bleaching its a mild nuisance. Tenacity requires 2 applications about 2 weeks apart and lawn needs to be watered or rained on about 1 days afterwards. If done in spring most weeds wiped out for the season. It’s the most natural / most safe for people/kids/animals.

Does tenacity kill Crabgrass ? would it be bad to use Par3 in a combo with Tenacity?

If you have an issue with crabgrass I would recommend using the active ingredient quinclorac to treat it. It will work much better than tenacity on crabgrass. Thanks for watching!

I don't mind the bleaching as much as I can't stand having to reapply Tenacity multiple times with limited success. There are much better herbicides on the market that can take care of the weeds in the lawn much better than Tenacity if you are not using it when seeding. Great information!

I hear mixing tenacity with low doses of triclopyr can boost it's effects while reducing the bleaching. Curious if anyone has tried this in the comments. I have not personally - Triclopyr works well enough for me alone or with 24d that I don't see the need to add tenacity to the mix, unless you need crabgrass control. I have had better success with Drive in this use case though.
@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 6 ай бұрын
Mixing the two is supposed to reduce bleaching. If you haven't heard of Sublime before, go research that. I spoke with the lead rep at Prime Source (the manufacturer of Sublime) and in their testing this had zero bleach on weeds or turfgrass. It was a mix of triclopyr, mesotrione, and dicamba. The unique mixture suppressed the bleaching effects you get with mesotrione alone. I did have it bleach my lawn, but the rep mentioned last season they had an issue with the chemicals staying suspended in the 32oz bottles correctly and you really need to vigorously shake it for a few minutes to ensure it is well mixed. I'm going to test it out again next season to see how it works out.

@TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover 9 ай бұрын
That sucks, I love Triad and it works very well. I'm not certain what products you have available for sale in CA, but I would look for a good all around broadleaf herbicide. I would also suggest contacting your local extension office to ask what herbicide they would recommend to kill that Bermuda off based on what's available for sale in your area. The people at my local extension office are very knowledgeable and helpful. Thanks for watching and good luck!

I wouldn't mind the bleaching so much if it actually killed weeds and I didn't have to reapply it. But I found there are much better herbicides for the majority of weeds that don't bleach. Tenacity certainly still has it's place and uses, but there are much better options if you are not applying when seeding imo. Thanks for watching!

Have Saint Augustine (Central Florida) - used Tenacity in Spring. Applied a few times as 1 time application is not helping much. This crap is only bleaching the lawn and weed is growing back in 2 months. Almost no effect on weed. Was fooled by multiple positive reviews.

If it is not a broadleaf herbicide, why does it the label list multiple broadleaf weeds it controls? "Mesotrione (Tenacity) is a systemic postemergence herbicide for control of crabgrass, goosegrass, barnyardgrass, and yellow foxtail. This herbicide can also control several species of broadleaf weeds, as well as creeping bentgrass, nimblewill, and nutsedge in turf."

After i week of seeing no results, I even re- spot sprayed a select number/area of dandelions and other weeds and still nothing. What a waist of time and money.. I have had much better luck with good old Weed -B -Gone concentrate. Very disappointed.
