Is the 1.3 diesel so much worse than a 0.9 twinair to have been killed off by FIAT ? (& others)

Let's be fair - taking on a Mitsubishi L200 with off road tyres, off road suspension, 4WD low range and a diff lock, is tough in a "stock" FIAT Panda !
So lets pitch Pete our 2021 FIAT Panda 4x4 with something a little better matched !
Enter Paddy - our new (to us) 2008 FIAT Panda 4x4 !
That raises some questions;
Have FIAT vastly improved the 4x4 Panda in 13 years ?
Jono loves diesel, so how much better is the modern 0.9 turbo charged twinair engine ?
Why is the small diesel been killed off ?
So in this episode we introduce our new Panda to his "bro" and take a look at what's changed inside, outside and underneath on our FIAT Panda 169 1.3 multijet Diesel & FIAT Panda 319 0.9 Twinair Turbo.
We also conduct a non scientific fuel test to see how much 13 years has improved FIAT's economic small cars !
Challenge one - quality and economy - who is your money on ?

Hi, I have been waiting for this comparison!! I have a 4x4 twin air but really want a diesel one too, so this will be invaluable. I love the Panda Cross and 4x4. If you go to anywhere in the Italian of French Alps they are everywhere.

Hope we do them justice !! I would have bought the diesel if the choice had been there - but the twinair has won me over, great fun as you know (bar the hateful eco button🤣) Wishing you a great Christmas and a Happy New Year !

I had the diesel and wished I got the twinair instead. On motorways the diesel was doing over 4k rpm at 70 in fifth, it was noisy, strained and just awful on journeys. Terrible gearing, maybe its changed but that was in a 2015 standard Panda 4x4, not the Cross model.

Another great video, made even better as I got a mention! And yes I did mention an old Panda 4x4 or a Ignis, but I think you went even better Panda Cross MJT perfect! Last year when I decided I wanted a Panda 4x4 I soon decided I wanted a new style and then noticed the Cross, so having also like yourself owned a Qubo MJT 75bhp, my mind was made up, Cross MJT 95bhp , initially saw some advertised and soon sold, we were locked down too, so couldn’t drive out of Wales, as you know I ended up with a TA engine, great car, but I never really found a good comparison of a TA v MJT, here in the UK I find a bias towards the TA, however I still consider buying a MJT, one thing I never liked in the Qubo was the notchy 5 speed gearbox, and I was always a little concerned about it in the Panda 4x4, so I think you’ve played a blinder here and I reckon there will be a lot of interest in the comparison. On another note in my Qubo I had a Double Din Pioneer Apple Car Play , it was great and I think is a nice feature on the older Panda that it has the Double Din slot👍 I also love the Panda 100HP, I did consider one, but really wanted a 4x4 for the narrow Welsh Lanes All in all I’m stoked for you and Nath, and I have a funny feeling this new addition with some nice mods, suspension, tyres , power, it may be going places were Pete starts struggling Looking forward to watch the journey Oh I thought the MJT sounded less vocal when you drove it I’ve also looked at these cars and hate the 2 Tone colour, my Cross is Green and I love it, just like a British Racing Green mini I once owned Last thing Jon, hate to tell you this, as I’m a life long cyclist , but you have the look of a classic cyclist, and don’t knock padded Lycra with some chamois cream, before you’ve tried it 🤟 and Cyclists tend to drink a flat white in the morning and love shiny coffee machines. 👍 just saying….. No shame in it All the best guys Look forward to the next thrilling episode Ace 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Ha ha - I was thinking of you when the cyclists were there 😉 - The Ace tea towel holder !! I shall ignore the your last sentence, no sweaty bum cracks near my rocket 🤣 Paddy had his IMT (MOT) today, passed no problem - its a very tough test, they popped out rollers to test the 4WD - wobble it, bounce it and you drive over pits and they prod and poke about - all interesting as you are in the car or walking along the side watching ! Its not without its problems, as you say the gearbox is notchy, reverse when you want it, can graunch (if thats how you spell it) and heading to fifth sometimes triggers the reversing lights (having followed Nath in it ) - as an aside, my Qubo was an auto ! We have a Sony 2 din to go in - I just need to sort a connector - proving harder than I thought to find - there is a drip from a prop seal, seal is on the way, but post here is very hit and miss (80/20 in favour of miss). So the plan is to to health check Paddy in every way - probably a hash paint job to ditch the cream 🤮 then rag it - once we are bored of that - its turbo time - we think some sexy suspension (90mm drop), 17's with a remap and hybrid turbo pumping him north of 125 would be a right laugh to everything but my wallet - which again as an aside has been slaughtered today for more ML juice and parts ! Its grim when the Portuguese Mercedes parts guy knows you by name ! (did get our arses in a couple of EQS's a CLS63 and Smart ev whilst there). You will be glad to know we can match 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 this week, it is slashing down, we leave home it's OK (well decent daylight) and as we head up the hills to the mancave, you can see the hill disappear into a black cloud that has just slashed all week - I hate it 🤣 my gift for moaning has hit overdrive over the rain, I moved for nothing but 🌞 ! might send a strong email Portugal's government about it 🤣 I mentioned in another comment - I look everyday for a 100hp - the prices are well up in the UK and here there are none, never seen one or seen one for sale! Merry Christmas to you and yours from the pair of us !!

We must be hatched out the same pod! As I keep looking at the 100HP’s still some lovely ones about There is a Alfa specialist in Wrexham, he does Fiats too, looking at his website he has a White 100HP, I regularly see a red and a black one I keep telling myself I don’t need one though, some of the other classic Hot Hatches have sky rocketed in price , I thought the Fiat had only crept up slightly , when I was 20/21 I had a Fiat 127 GT, they were mega rare as I think they were made for about 12-18 months, 75HP in the 80’s not bad that Are you not going to fit a lift kit to Paddy? I thought the underside of that car looked very clean I remember you saying you had the Dual Logic, I was never very impressed with the 5 speed box, it did spoil a very good Car, but the engine and handling was excellent I be interested if you notice anymore understeer with the heavier motor up front Oh and Wales is currently dry👌🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Ace

That 100hp is a car that I have wanted for years - oddly, I like the shape of a Panda - Mrs. M. hates them (snob !!). Now the 127 is a fantastic looking car - I keep seeing renders of a bod doing a modern day ev take - FIAT should buy it, the design is "ACE" - a GT now must be worth a fortune. Not sure about lifting Paddy, he is a good 75mm taller than Pete already (which is odd) so let's see if he is a topply thing, but as you say, the engine weight could make him better - to be honest, we have not used it at all - an issue with the ML has taken all our time - we were supposed to film a Christmas best car of the year etc and never got round to it, time has flown by the last couple of weeks. If you have driven a Smart, that's what the Qubo box was like, it needed a meeting to agree a gear change 😂- but the override with the shifter was OK really and you could almost husssel it along. Nath is hoping for some Golf GTI keys under the tree - sadly for him, its some pants and a T shirt ! Hope Santa empties his sack your way !! enjoy the day & appreciate your time in humoring me and keeping me entertained - top comments !! HNY J&N

My other "thing" as messaging with you is like a confessional (not that I really know what that entails) is aftershave - at work they said they knew if I was in, as the offices stunk of various brands of aftershave - I took that as a compliment, better than one bloke who just reeked of BO ( yes I did give him a verbal warning for it, but bought him a full years worth of grooming products and put 50 quid in the local laundrette for his use - I kid you not ! :) Watched Ryan "Jono lookie-likie" Reynolds - he is gorgeous and the young lady in that with him, frankly took my eyes of the Wrexham scenery - the ugly stick missed her by some margin ! The JEEP is going up for sale in January, decision made (probably !) could take forever to sell, but the cash will burn a hole - so about to surf : V10 Touareg v S class v Grand Cherokee v Transit ..... Quite happy with your purchase, I have one just like your new "old" Panda 4x4. Mine is from 2007. Maybe you'll try mud tyres now? Probably the difference is off road. The petrol is better for off-road, because of the torque being available in low revs. In Rocky climbs or path The petrol ones are better. The diesel is better for road use, better consumption, nevertheless both are quite fun off-road and there's lot we can do with these. Just have fun! Regards from Madeira Island! 😁

We are going to play with the "new" old one - first will be to get it in top condition - then test it as is - as you suggested we will get some mud slinger tyres on. We will see how it goes, if all good, a turbo upgrade and re map will be on the list. It's a great engine - the fuel economy is outstanding (although I had that engine in a different car in the UK, so know it well) We change our minds (well me) hourly 🤣 but one of them will be in for a real treat - full hybrid turbo setup , 90mm lowered suspension, as big a wheel / tyre as we can get the law to allow - but thats a while away ! Have a great Christmas on that spectacular island.

The new car looks great guys, I think you’ve done really well finding that one. The styling has aged well too, it certainly doesn’t look remotely dated next to the new one. It’s going to be interesting to see how you find the engines compare. It sounds like you are thinking of making this a bit of a project car, which again could make for some really interesting videos. Have you thought about making a bit more off-road focussed? Maybe raise it a bit and put some specialist tyres on it? Plenty of time for that I guess. We’d all like to get to know it a bit better first, and see how those engines compare and which one you think best suits the car’s character and off-road performance.

I like the new (old 169) Panda, looks great in that dark green colour, maybe the cream sections you could do in a wrap or black textured paint or carbon effect? Think it would look better in a darker colour on those cream sections. The mpg in in ECO mode surprised me! I honestly thought it was meant to use less fuel ⛽️ 😲 But I guess it won't because you have to use more throttle for any given speed and you have to use lower gears all the time. I know what you mean about the ECO mode being awful to drive in, it takes all the fun out of the drive. The 'driving through treacle' analogy was spot on!😁👍 On my version 2014 Panda 4x4 TA it remembers the ECO mode and Start Stop mode positions when you start it up, so no need to constantly keep pressing it off. Maybe a setting in the menu or maybe something Fiat can program into the ECU for yours? Definitely interested how the diesel compares to the Twinair, lots of side by side tests will be much appreciated. Shocked by the price of the older 169 here in the UK you can pick them up for not much money at all usually, although lots of 2nd hand cars have gone up to crazy values since the pandemic.🤔

You have a secret camera in our mancave :) - Nath has been in Germany for over a month - back now - whilst away, I prep'd Paddy (obvious name for a green Panda) for our first ever paint attempt - I took quite a dislike to the cream ! So all week has been painting the cream sections and against the advice of the chap we got the paint from, we have done the grey light areas as well - they were in a very odd finish, I assume factory, but very - pitted - is the only way I can describe it - the cream was also odd, very powdery, that could be the heat here in Portugal ? In a past life we had a Qubo, that had the same as you - turn SS off and it stayed off - the dealer says its to meet new emissions standards that it defaults on. We have hardly used Paddy, mainly because I am sure it does not have a thermostat, so thats on next weeks list of jobs (we do not work fast in Portugal :0) but already its the gear box that is the big difference - the twinair is so sweet, the 169 is very sloppy, 4th to 5th especially. But fuel wise, Paddy sipps at it - surprisingly, the torque feels bad on the diesel, but thats from a couple of drives only. Portugal is seriously an odd place for cars - used is so high (plus; new cars have VAT and another 24 or 25% vehicle tax the government put on all new vehicles, so a 45K Defender pushes well past 75K when tax is on ) 4x4 Panda's just never come up for sale here, we looked for 6 months, so when Paddy came up, we just did it sight unseen - looked better in the photo's than in the flesh, but we are piling on the TLC !!
@pdtech4524
@pdtech4524 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrivenMadShow Paddy looks like it's had an easy life looking underneath, very tidy, you got a good buy there, worth paying a bit more for a good one you intend keeping and putting some TLC into etc The 4x4 versions are very thin on the ground here in the UK also and prices vary considerably! Gearing wise I guess they are very different, the TA has that very low 1st gear for crawling off road but also great in slow moving traffic and the 6th gear seems to make it a bit more long legged on a good run. Plenty of info and very knowledgeable people on the Fiat forum who might be able to give some good advise on the sloppy 4th to 5th gear, could be like a worn gear select cable/ mechanism or might just want cleaning up regreasing etc? Might just be the gearbox oil needs changing?

Hi guys im really enjoying your videos very interesting and informative so thank you for posting. Ive owned 2 Fiat Panda 4x4's from new (Mk4) both with the twin air engines, however i did find they required twice weekly top ups with oil, this improved slightly with milage, but they were still using about a cup of oil per week, and slightly higher on long runs. I currently own a Mk4 cross with the 1.3 multijet diesel engine, which was purchased used from the original owner with 12,000 miles and full service history. Are you guys running a professional garage or is this just a hobby as your workshop is very well equipped with a ramp etc? Thank you, best regards, Stefano....
@DrivenMadShow
@DrivenMadShow 2 жыл бұрын
Our Twinair does not use any oil - two issues with me saying that - the plastic dipstick really only tells you that you have some 🤣not really how much - plus we are OCD oil changers, but ours does not use a cup a week (he says confidently🤞🏼) The mancave is a hobby, we know naff all about cars (The old one typing this) - I retired a few years ago and wanted some sun, so ditched the UK for Portugal - we were going to get the villa and pool thing, but the holiday house we are in is great, so having no space, got a much better mancave than expected. We both love cars, I have been around the car industry in a work life, but nowhere near the fixing them, fact is I hate getting dirty or oily - but Nath has a gift for it - so the lift was a great buy and incredibly cheap for what it is, but you need the space ! that's where we are lucky - no way could we afford to do this in the UK, but with little industry, Portugal is amazing for commercial Property (no so houses, they are surprisingly expensive) We are on a go slow as Nath is stuck in Germany with Covid, so a week there has turned into a month - so all I have done is stroke the cat, sit in the sun and drink coffee - its been great :) The 1.3 has sat on the ramp for a month, slow drip of oil from the prop is annoying me - but the cream sides are sanded and prepped for a colour change and all the parts are immaculately lined up, reays for his return (allegedly next week) - not driven it much - but the engine is really sweet and free revving, so we need to fix a few niggles and then we are going to thrash it :) and see how it fares against mine - cannot wait ! Have a great weekend

@@DrivenMadShow Hi there.....thank you very much for your quick response which I enjoyed reading. we purchased two brand new fiat panda 4x4's in the UK, including the winter pack with the two front electrically heated seats, windscreen, and door mirrors which are absolutely brilliant for the UK cold and icy winters when we collected the cars from the dealership i thought it strange that the salesman told us to buy a litre of Selenia oil for each car? However we soon found out that both cars burnt a small amount of oil, like i previously mentioned about a cup per week, and a little more on a long continious journey. I mentioned this to the workshop manager who stated that this was normal for the twin air engine, and would improve with mileage. Similar to you my wife and I decided to leave the UK for a better lifestyle, climate etc and we purchased a property in Southern Italy, where we resided for 3 years, however with Brexit, covid, low pound to Euro exchange rates, poor health care etc we decided to relocate back to the UK. However Italy was going to impose another full covid lockdown so we drove from the far south of Italy and crossed into France, a journey of approximately 950 miles which took us 18 hours of almost non stop driving in our Fiat Panda cross, to beat the lockdown, then another 750 miles to reach Calais....... Our Fiat Panda cross was purchased used in Italy, just 2 years old, one owner with full Fiat service history, to date its been an excellent car, we have made two return journeys from Italy to the UK without any problems, and the fuel economy around 65mpg as we drove only on the motorways. The Panda cross was converted to UK specification so we had two new front lights, a new speedometer from Kmh to MPH and new reversing and fog lamps fitted, and a UK Mot, i still have all the left hand lights if you damage yours.... As the cost of servicing and repairs etc is FAR higher in the UK than Italy, i have been completing the servicing myself, every 6 months, however i only have a single garage and no ramp so its working on the floor with a trolley jack and axle stands. I wish your son a quick recovery and i look forward to watching your forthcoming videos, stay safe and in good health, thank you, best regards, Stefano......

Wow that's a fair journey in a Panda - the seats are not that bad to be fair, although we are spoiled with the ML my son just worked on - very underrated for long distance stuff (we live in the Algarve and Nathan's girlfriend lives in Lisbon) its super comfortable, so it's our weapon of choice for any distance / motorway stuff. That's a shame you left Italy, although being called Stefano, would have thought it should be the other way around 🤣- Italy is a stunning country with almost everything you could wish for, food, cars, culture it got it all - like everywhere, there are issues, but less there than many. Not sure how we ended up here, not that well travelled - possibly given the chance to do it again, Malta would be top of my list, but we are very settled here now, but the thought of heading back to the UK would terrify me - I still find it cold here ! (true brit only thinks of the weather ). Appreciate your time in commenting - hope the health issue is rectifying itself. Enjoy the rest of the weekend - sun shining here 😎 J.

@@DrivenMadShow Hi Again....yes an epic non stop journey leaving at 0500hrs at the end of the evening curfew, crossing into France at 2300 hrs, then being the only vehicle on the motorway in both directions was an experience as France was then on a cufew from 20.00 hrs - 0600 hrs, then continuing to Calais arriving in the UK at 1700 hrs driving almost non stop, yes we find the seats comfortable. We were in the far South of Italy and miss the sea view, weather, and culture but with the covid lock downs it eventually became our prison, it was a very hard decision to return back to the UK, but the right desision made at the right time..... We have never visited Portugal but it certainly looks very nice and always quite popular on the TV programmes like "A place in the sun". Thats good the sun is shining where you are, its been a typical English January day here today, overcast, grey, windy, and cold so probably not the best day to service a car lol.... Yes the medical problem was all sorted out but unfortunately not at the three different hospitals that i visited, but by our wonderful Doctor at the Farmacia and a neighbour who was a nurse, i am truly grateful for all thier help. Yes having Italian names and ancestry certainly helped in Italy and at least they could pronounce my name correctly lol.......enjoy the sun and perhaps a nice coffee or two at the local bar, best regards, Stefano

Like the tow tone idea (we do hate the cream to be honest ) - I have forced Nath to listen to various 80's stuff for years :) ---- I have searched high and low for parts - some appear available for the 169 (our latest one) is yours a 319? as that and our 369 have next to nothing that I can find (I so want a skid plate !) - the only lift kit I have seen, but not investigated is by eibachshop.com - have a look 🥳 - hang on, I have done 1/2 a job ... here is a proper link ! eibachshop.com/index.php?p2659,eibach-b12-pro-kit-suspension-kit-fiat-panda

@@DrivenMadShow We live in northern England so, sometimes we have to drive on snow, or compacted snow. The amount of traction it finds in those condition, (albeit with winter tyres on) is incredible! We chose it over the 4x4 truck everytime

Now, I wonder how many people didn't bother watching the second half? Hands up, I admit I didn't at first, but oh boy, I'm glad I did. Full screen of Jono's face, for over 20 minutes. Straight off for the box of kleenex, coz let's be honest, not being in my teenage tears, Jono's glasses were never in any threat.

Now I used to favor an old photo of my Dad, but since youtube, find myself too, stroking the man-size watching myself 😂. Promise you, this has had me chuckling since I read it in Tesco's (yep, in the Algarve, we live the life) this afternoon !! I can only thank you for cheering up and old expat git for most of the year !! So we wish you everything you want for yourself & a little more this Christmas - Happy New Year and hope it's a great 2022 for you and all those close -- big kiss from me and Nath 💋

Don't you think strange that, eco average is higher than no eco???
@DrivenMadShow
@DrivenMadShow 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, no - I hate that button as you possibly spotted 🤣 - but because the power is so restricted, you have to accelerate harder, use higher gears and almost trash it to get anywhere - so for me, that eco mode is to satisfy some law that is utter B**10cks !

Thanks for the video and the chart We have just bought a 2020 twin air Waze Panda cross, did 49.7 mpg on a return trip to Scotland with eco on. We will try another trip to Wales with eco off and see what it does. It certainly reduces the power and makes it harder to drive and overtake. What is its purpose?
@DrivenMadShow
@DrivenMadShow 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrAustina35 When I quizzed the dealer, it defaults "on" to meet emission standards, so my assumption is that with eco on, it does something to kill power and reduce emissions on some random bench test - my pea brain assumed it was to help gain fuel economy, the tech laughed and answered with "right" - the salesbloke then chipped in, Oh I thought it increased mpg (well he said liters per 100km :) so the only thing learned is, going for an MOT or alike, leave in eco ! If you are getting 50mpg, I think that's impressive, Nath says, turn that screen off and give it the beans ... ha ha - Ooh to be 20 again !! - the 1.3 will hammer that, I think if I really try (and I will) I can do 80 ! ( I once drove from Sheffield to Brighton in a 1.5 Megane and managed 83 average for the trip - it was a bet with my work partner back in the day; as the artics kept giving me funny one finger waves and honking in encouragement, my partner handed over the 10 quid and said "quit you win"( he did 70 on the way up, but still argues I was going down hill 🤣), lets get on with it - Ohh no, if I start something, I finish it, took a while, but what a result ! (We did the opposite challenge in an Audi S8, trying for the lowest MPG to Cardiff, but that's another story, )
DAD LEFT HIS OLD SOCKS ON THE COUCH…😱😂
