I have nerve damage in my left foot, but not my left hand, broke them at the same time. Happy that you and others with such problems can ride. My foot is ok to switch gears though.

DCT means more new riders and sales for Honda. In the 60's, I use to say I'll never drive an automatic transmission car or motorcycle. Let technology keep us safe and enjoy our ride...

The only thing I don't like about DCTs is they tend to shift at weird times (like in a turn), which has spooked me more than once.

Depending on the type of person the interaction and constant communication with the vehicle can keep them from entering the white zone everywhere they go I assume this takes less away from a bike than it does a more insulated vehicle though

I got a Rebel 1100T DCT as my first bike because that’s what the shop had in stock and I got a killer deal on it. I didn’t want the saddle bags but figured I could always take them off. Turned out I love the hard bags and they look great in black. I didn’t want the DCT but there’s a reason that all modern sports cars are switching from manual to DCT. They are simply quicker at shifting. I rode with it in rain mode to start and it feels like a Rebel 500. I am extremely happy with my purchase.

A Rebel 500 with DCT or add the engine and transmission from the NC750 with DCT would definitely make a good beginner motorcycle because you'll never stall it under any situation especially when taking off from a dead stop like from a red light which is a cause of beginner motorcyclist crashes.

DCT is great for people with disabilities, other than that shifting your own damn gears is what makes riding so damn good. If you can't learn to shift your own gears you shouldn't be on a motorcycle. Shifting gears isn't difficult. Saying you have an automatic bike will get you laughed at in your face.

I'm a 40-year-old beginner rider and I have 1100T. I have nerve damage in my left hand from Iraq. And this bike lets me ride. I absolutely love it. I kept in rain mode for over a month. And now I'm on standard and it is a blast to drive. It is turned into my daily driver. And unlike some other friends I can actually ride in the rain more efficiently because of all the features it is godsend of a bike

I went to DCT as I am a disabled vet that enjoys riding. I love the my DCT Africa. I grew up racing MX later GP but as I was disabled in 83 I realized while I could ride a manual, the DCT is a GOD send for me personally.

I appreciate your videos and your thoughts on this. I just bought the DCT for my beginner wife, a MSC graduate, she never felt confident with clutching. With Rain mode and DCT, I felt she could upgrade from her shaky '81 KZ440. She took it right away, I was nervous (it's an 1100!!), but I told myself this isn't a 200hp R1 (but a modest 89hp), and she returned 20 minutes later all smiles. I think she will be married to this one for a long time.

The fact that she learned on a standard bike was very useful, I myself upgraded from a cmx500 to the cmx1100DCT although I had an accident on my 3rd day, I see the benefits of this transmission, but I do not think a brand new rider with no experience at all should start on a bike like this. I am glad your wife is also having fun :)

You might be better off investing in a heel toe shifter, no ankle movement need (for the most part) can’t really compare 50 bucks for a part to a brand new bike lol but i totally get you having the new and shiny toy is gonna be very hard to pass off especially when you have someone that’s gonna help you out with it, good luck my brother hope you get that bike!

DCT is automated manual transmission. DCT will allow more people into motorcycles. Many people do not want to shift. Look what happened with car manuals.

I like how people think that DCT, ABS, Traction control, wheelie control etc are for either cripples, mentally disabled people or beginners, you clearly don't know what you are talking about its the same old story with stick cars and automatic cars "Real men drive stick" yeah and now nearly everyone uses an automatic, i am sorry guys but DCT is plainly better on every aspect even on off-road nowadays with the tech advancements.

yeah just like cars are better than horses, which is clearly why the sport of horse riding has completely ceased to exist and no one does it anymore because cars are just better. I mean what kind of crazy person would want to MANUALLY do more things, clearly this isn't even subjective because no one enjoys developing and honing physical skills and everyone just wants to press buttons and switches.

I have been riding powersports for 22 years now and I fell in love with the DCT after I gave it a try. There is a big ego problem with riders and standard transmissions. Take my word now that 90% of new motorcycles sold in a decade from now, will be automatic-style. It is simply better in every way and when people give it a try, rather than being scared to look uncool, they will love it. Consider the fact that 50% or more of sport bikes already come with semi-automatic transmissions. Also, the rebel 1100 is no joke. It is in the top 5 fastest cruisers on the market right now.

Love the Rebel. It’s been a bike that I’ve used in basic rider classes since I started. I think it’s a great bike for beginners. Nothing worse than recommending a Rebel and knowing that in 6 months, they will likely upgrade. That recommendation has to be tempered with watching their ability above all. I have DCT on my 2018 Wing and don’t miss shifting. Good advice on waiting to purchase. Honda is notorious for keeping a model the same for years. I paid nearly full price on my Wing, but a fellow rider recently got a 2018 DCT for $9,000 less than I got mine for. Good review of this fun bike!

A lot of people mock or slam the DCT but I don't get it. Personally I'd never have one, for me being manual is part of the ride and I couldn't go without it, but I still think this is absolutely brilliant! It gives a way for people who otherwise might not be able to, or not want to, actually get into bikes. As long as I always have a manual option, bring them on!

Honda are recommending the "RAIN" mode for relaxed riding/getting used to it - no snatchy throttle. I'm a "coming back" rider after decades and my lower left leg/foot needs help. It's great not to have to change gears with my left foot... I want this because I'd like to carry a passenger (not on the first day), I think that the 500 would be a bit marginal/sketchy carrying two adults. Consider this: I was looking at the Indian Scout - well the Scout comes in 60 or 100cubic inches, the Honda 1100 is only 67 cubic inches... I literally lost my full license somewhere between the UK and the USA so I'd need to take a test - BUT what I really need is more advanced riding lessons. Best, Pete.

I bought this and it is a great bike, put the power mode in sport mode, drive with the paddle shifters---manual mode-------- and you'll wonder what a clutch is for, the DCT trans is seamless.

Riding a DCT Honda for 2 years now and it'd be hard to go back on the comfort and safety this brings riding in a big city. We got tons of traffic jams, stop and go and oftentimes no room to lane filter, so without the dct, I'd be shifting a hundred times for a few hundred meters. Thank you, but no. Constantly slowing down and speeding up from many intersections, roundabouts, pedestrians, I'd be shifting another hundred times. Tramway rails, bike crossings, bus stops, pedestrians jogging across, takes up so much attention, too, so it's good to have one less thing to worry about. Without the dct, I would not ride a manual bike for fun and going to work to around this city, it'd be a pain otherwise. So the dct makes a regular bike usable in big cities and far far far surpassing scooters for that purpose. And I'm not letting boomers tell me how they'd ridden back in their youth. This isn't the route 66 here.

I grew up riding 50cc Honda Mini Bikes until i was like 15. Then my dad got me a Moped and not having to focus and worry about shifting gears made the rides more enjoyable and let me pay more attention to the road and riding. I havent been on two wheels (other than a bicycle) in 10+ years, im 32 now. JUST purchased one of these and from the very get go the bike drives itself. Its shockingly easy to ride. Again its been over 10 years since any type of motorized two wheel riding and this is actually MY VERY FIRST MOTORCYCLE EVER. I put 150 miles on it in 2 days just driving around my local streets. I love thing thing so much. Say whatever you want but not having to worry about a clutch and shifting gears helps my ADD brain just focus on the road and riding. For me that is a major selling point on its own. Its also nice to be able to shift if you want to with a simple press of a button. I drive a Hyundai Veloster N DCT that functions the same way so it felt like i already understood the engine and shift timing and all that. Love my bike. Cant say enough about how easy it is to ride.

@@brockbaker9500 A lot to like about the Scouts. Arguably better than the rebel but it also costs a good chunk more. I would save some extra pennies to get the regular over the 60. Not sure if you’re a new rider or not but the scout has a really linear power band. Very forgiving if you are worried about the extra HP. The regular scout motor is a gem.

DCT, it may not be perfect for everyone now, give it a little more time and it will become like ABS and fuel injection. DCT can shift faster than 98% of riders, proof is formula 1.

@@erickdavepascua6880 yes it's automatic, just have to give it throttle, but it still has 6 gears that the machine shifts on its own. the Honda dct has a manual mode too so if you want to shift like a normal bike you can.

Just NO! If I didn't want the control over my engine and the power it applies to the rear tire via the transmission, I would have remained a scooter rider. DCT can burn in Hell. I avoid automatic transmissions in cars and trucks also. I love my mechanicals and don't need the cost and numbness of riding around in something as infantile to operate as a bumper car at an amusement park.

@@amerigo88 completely agree. The one exception is for people with actual damage to their left hand. Otherwise, learn to use a dang clutch, its part of the fun and will allow you to ride any and all motorcycles.

I have 3 seasons now on a rebel 500, I ride mostly city, i know how to shift, i also used to manual shift my car for years, I'm good at it but man i'm tired of it sometimes. It's just about confort, people who buy these rebels i think are more about cruise and relax than sport

I am an experienced rider who sold my Harley Davidson street glide, and bought the new 2022 Honda rebel 1100 DCT. I don't regret it for a second! I still own two older sportsters and like them both. But I got the Honda Rebel thinking about my future. This is my first automatic transmission motorcycle and I like it alot!

I was attracted to this bike for a lot of the reasons mentioned in this video. I don't care too much for shifting on manuals and I want something where I don't have to factor that in. I am concerned with safety and what was said was spot on, take one major operational factor out of the equation and focus on what is going on around you. I also want something that can go the distance/commuting and enjoy the ride, and something less annoying in stop & go traffic. I do a ton of heavy computer work, and after a couple of hours of handling the clutch I always ask myself how long I have until I have serious problems with my hands. This seems super spot on for me, and it looks like I am the right height as well to be comfortable. So I just may go for a test ride.

I bought my rebel 1100 DCT and love it, I dropped it twice already, second drop costs me $400. In repairs, but it’s fine now , no damage to me though

Sounds like a decent replacement for my old beloved, but long gone, Honda V45 Magna. Mine was a first gen and had carburetors, but was otherwise high tech for the time with water cooling and shaft drive. I loved it, and rode it through the 90s. Now I want to get back into riding. Maybe the Honda Rebel will be the one.

I would consider myself a new rider and this is my first bike. It’s crazy crazy powerful and has torque to eternity. Definitely a bike that you can learn on in rain mode and easily grow into. By day three I graduated to standard mode. Sport mode is crazy twitchy so I’ll be taking my time until I get in that mode. It’s an AMAZING motorcycle and the DCT yes shifts as fast as a BMW M3 DCT. I truly believe that this motorcycle will be raising the bar for Honda in the cruiser side of things. It’s refined, robust, fast, great looks, technologically advanced I just can’t say enough about this motorcycle. It feels extremely light and does well on highways. Low speed maneuvering is super easy, just keep an eye on your throttle input. 0 to 60 has been tested at 3.4 seconds so this thing is like sport bike fast. You’d be crazy not to get it if you’re considering one. Look at the used market because I stole mine with only 69 miles in new condition.

Hey DanDanTheFireman, I have a 2020 Africa Twin, same engine with just different tune and I can tell you, imho, with 98Nm of torque (about 73 lb ft), this is definitely not a beginner bike, no matter how the weight distribution is handled. This engine absolutely moves and beginners will find it difficult to control. Anyway, just my opinion keep up the good work

Completely agree. Selling this as a beginner's bike will get a lot of new riders in trouble. I think people (reviewers as well) that has never ridden a heavy DCT bike such as the African Twin or the Cross Toured 1200 DCT should limit recommendations, especially to New riders. 1 second ago

@@onskyk Thanks for your comment. I also think that new riders should not get bikes that have DCT or quickshifters. The former doesn't teach them how to "feel" the bike through the clutch and the later teaches new riders the wrong skills in foresight (for instance, when overtaking or preparing for a curve) and the correct time to change gears. Sure, they're awesome if you're on a race track with a racing bike, otherwise, beginners should stay clear of QS.

I’m 38 years old, I bought this as my first bike several months ago. It’s been fantastic, I had tendon damage at my left elbow that is starting to heal. I did, painfully, learn on a manual. I really enjoy this bike and I put it in manual mode with the paddle shifters almost every time. No regrets here.

Good points and it really comes down to confidence, abilities and awareness. For a brand-new rider like my grandson, he bought a Rebel 300, and he loves it. He can master it, control it and gain technique and skill. If you have never ridden a bike the answer is a fat, probably not!. Some folks excel with a challenge others ride overly cautious, which can also be a hazard to yourself and others on the road.

All my life I wanted a Harley, my dad rode one for most of my life, I loved the sound and style, last year I got into an accident where I recieved 3rd degree burns heavily on my left hand and foot and om the thumb of my right hand all of which required skin grafting, I gave up on ever riding because of this but this dct in a sports cruiser has given me hope to be able to ride again

Great vid! Buddy whos one of my deputies, during riots was helping a shop owner clean her shop, was rushed, and beaten by rioters, fast forward to now, hes recovered, disabled, he ended up also getting stabbed twice with a sodster... he sold all his bikes, harleys, his repsol, gave up on ever riding again, then came this puppy, he was able to attend our 9-11 ride!!!! Wish harley would come out with same for their sportsters!

I started on the Rebel 500 and am already in love with the idea of getting a 1100 after I sold and switched to an other bike. But I have a strong distaste for putting more tech into a bike, I get that it makes it more accessible but wish you could get a cheapo version with less tech PS: But it's great to see Honda being so inclusive - a cruiser made for a race driver who has a broken arm/hand and isn't too tall and also doesn't want to spent too much money on a bike

I’m a brand new rider, I bought myself a NC750X DCT and I made the right choice, it’s got good weight to it which makes it great for windy days, Dan is 100% correct I practice on a 250 and turning was slow.. everything he said is 100% for new riders. Buy the DCT for new and long distance riders

As far as motorcycles go, i'll be shifting myself until i cant anymore. Then i'll get a dct bike. Its definitely a great thing that honda is doing, it get more butts onto seats and puts more riders on the road

I'm a new rider and I'm looking at the 1100 (not the DCT). I don't want a huge bike but I also don't want to trade up in a four months either. So far this bike has everything I want and is within my price range. Always interested in hearing what the experienced riders have to say.

Yes, I would recommend this bike with a manual transmission, I started with the cmx500 and upgraded after 2 years to the cmx1100, and although I chose the DCT I would not recommend this transmission for a new rider, the availability of the manual clutch can help you bring your bike under control should you need it. I found out the hard way (had an accident on my 3rd day of owning my new bike)

I started with a Honda CMX500 and two years later upgraded to a brand new CMX1100 DCT. I lost control of my 3 day old bike and ended up on the fence across the street from my home, crossing a very busy road that luckily was un transited at that very moment, it happened because I did not have a clutch to help me bring it back under my control ... If you learn on an automatic bike as a beginner, you are unlikely to ever be able to ride a standard bike (just like in a car) not impossible but you would have to re-learn and that might be harder to do. I really think a new rider should learn on a standard bike first, the manual clutch can definitely assist to master the control of your bike.

i have nerve damage in my left ankle from a bad dislocation. my ability to lift my foot is very limited so this automatic allows me to just enjoy riding nd not focusing on shifting. hats off to honda.

Today I finished my first classroom training of the CMSP… in 2 days I’ll be on the range. I have a couple thousand miles experience (delivering food) on a ruckus .. and the whole concept of the clutch .. it seems it’s sole purpose is to make motos more dangerous. There’s already so much to look out for between road hazards, traffic, weather., and now there’s a clutch to press, downshift, brake with right hand and brake with right foot. If you release the clutch too quick it stalls. If the point of 2 wheels is “freedom” Why add the burden of a clutch. Just twist and go! THATS freedom 😊

as far as the "you need to shift to be a biker" crowd, they can kiss my behind. i'll tell you why. I am handicapped. i lost most of the use of my left leg, i can stand, and walk with assistance. every day i miss riding, i was so envious of bikers because its something i thought i could never do again. i used to ride, loved it. but i was consigned to never riding again. but with this "miracle" of the DCT i have hope again. there are alot of handicapped people like me who want to ride but physically cant shift a bike, i wish all bike makers would make a DCT and have it a option on all bikes. give us hope.

Where I live , with motorcycle. Once qualified to ride. you are restricted to to a 650 cc or less displacement bike for 2 years. Before you have to re qualify to ride a larger displacement engine.

I'm specifically looking at the Rebel DCT because of shifting issues. I have issues with my left hand and leg so I've been stuck with scooters and cheap clones. Been riding for over 25 years and I'm sick of hearing people say "if you can't shift then you shouldn't be riding any motorcycles" or "you can't shift? You're blah blah blah". I love riding. I love the open road. Me being disabled doesn't mean I shouldn't ride. Motorcycle companies are just now breaking into the automatic world bringing in more riders. I want to be able to take a month off work and do a road trip around AZ and see the sites without someone telling me I don't belong on a bike because I'm disabled. If I had the money now I'd have the bike but times are tough and I'm stuck with a 250 scooter.

Whoever says you shouldn't be riding is a complete fu#$ face. The Rebel 1100 and the African Twin have the DCT. You're always welcome in the DDFM CREW no matter what you ride, or even if you don't ride! As long as you're a good person and help others achieve their goals.

So ive see a lot of hate on the dct and people who would buy one. The arguments simply do not make sense. Yes i think even if you get a DCT you should still learn how to ride a manual. I only buy auto cars but i still can drive stick. Im learning to ride bikes and learning manuals but im planning to buy this bike with the DCT. Me personally im intending on getting a bike mainly for cruising around town with my buddy who also rides. A DCT would be perfect for that with a lot of stop and go traffic. I can still shift if i choose to. Its really just about personal preference. If your getting into riding and want a DCT ignore all these negative trash comments. People just want to gatekeep and they get all insecure when people want to what they do but differently. If you want to ride a dct hop on and go. If thats what makes you happy and you enjoy it do it.

OEM accessories for any motorcycle, are expensive, people talk about the "Harley tax" but they clearly have not looked at OEM accessories on any other manufacturer and like Dan said, there will not be any aftermarket for this motorcycle for a while outside of generic "it fits anything" type of stuff. Possibly a year or more.

What year Street Bob ? I have a 2019 street 500 and I'm looking to move up to a big twin some time later next year. I just haven't decided which bike id love to move to. My friend has a mid 90's Dyna with a 140hp built Evo. And I honestly didn't like it. I am looking at soft tails, but I doubt they'll be as flickable and as sporty as the street 500 regarding its handling. I won't be getting and iron 883 or a sportster.

Watchin this 2024. 😂 im a new rider. I know how to shift. I will be getting dct 1100 for my first bike. I dont want to worry about shifting and just want to enjoy the ride. Most importantly, i want to be able to react to situations on the road quickly and situational awareness is important for safety.

I have a Rebel 500 and love it. I also have a Yamaha 950 Bolt. The 1100's weight is in-between these two bikes and more power than the Yamaha. Because I have progressive peripheral neuropathy in my left foot the DCT is a dream come true. I plan to trade in my 500 and Bolt and will have the 1100 on order very soon from my local dealer

This may be the first 1100 cc range bike that can be a beginning bike. First weight at little below 500 lbs for 6 speed and a little above for the DCT. It is a slim bike with low seat height so even 5 foot woman can handle it and probably flat foot. Start out in rain mode so less throttle reaction. As you learn it move up to standard, and when you are ready put it in sport and start grinning. ABS, traction control. Get a DCT and much less to think about. A big plus is not having to buy and sell a smaller bike after you get bored in 6 months to a year. And this will have the power to keep one satisfied for a long time. Cruise control and usb charging and led lighting a huge plus. Man Honda did their homework and best of all is the price. DCT for 10k and almost 90 hp - are you kidding.

Thank you for this video, I always learn a lot from your channel. I have to take issue with the idea that a person NEEDS a large engine to make a trip. In SE Asia, 1,000+ mile trips are frequently taken on bikes with engines no larger than 150 cc, often those trips will go off road or on non-paved roads..

Even without DCT, it has a slipper/assist clutch. Except for the ability of DCT to chose your gear, even the manual takes the clutch mostly out of the picture. Say what you want about DCT, but most bikes are moving this direction anyway, they're just not labeled Automatic. And even without the physical impairment justification, the question is whether anyone should be shamed into a manual transmission. Like ABS, it might take a while to adopt the technology, but when it becomes more widespread even more experienced rider may appreciate how well it works and how little they miss the routine of manual shifting in traffic.

I love the idea of an automatic bike. I hate the idea of stalling a bike in traffic or trying to figure out when to downshift as a beginner especially if you have to stop abruptly. Normally you have to put clutch in and when you brake well that’s one less step you have to worry about as a beginner if you’re in traffic. Not to mention people with wrist or hand disabilities. There’s so many benefits to having a DCT engine. I would definitely buy one and I would not feel any ounce of embarrassment. Real riders would encourage others to the world of a 2 wheels regardless if it can shift or not. I see the comments section and there’s so many idiots going crazy for shifting being a mandatory feature. Sounds like the same idiots who comments on every new car that is released and claim “If it has a manual transmission then I would buy it”.

I got a Honda 125 CC Hunter cub for around town and camping trips. I LOVE the automatic clutch. basically impossible to stall and simplifies riding so much. of course a manual clutch has its place, but the automatic type is great for me who has less than 1 year of riding experience and has to drive on extremely busy roads for 1 hour plus a day.

I am not a beginner butt its been a while since I have been riding regular. I have always been a sports bike nut but I am older and wanted a cruiser. Was considering the 1200 sportster. That is until I saw the rebel. I actually loo m ed at getting a 500 I liked it so much. But low and behold they did a 1100 thank you God

So many times I grab the clutch if I'm in a panic or need to slow down safely. In the images I've seen of it, I haven't seen a clutch at all, even on the manual version. I can't wait until it comes to my local shop so I can see it, breathe on it, and test ride. I've come to love my clutch handle because I panicked and flew over the handlebars in my MSF class while practicing quick stops because I accidentally over-revved, freaked out, and slammed on the brakes (front and back). I really hope I like it because I want it to be my long-distance bike that will keep up with the fiance's Harley Breakout.

I'd love a good looking cruiser but don't want to spring for a HD or even a Ducati Diavel (I already have the Scrambler Café Racer). I feel like this would be great for longer distance trips, which my café racer is certainly not ideal for!

To everyone saying that driving/riding and automatic is better and makes you drive better - I would argue that it enables you to be less engaged in the activity, less focused and leads to complacency. If you aren't focusing on operating your vehicle smoothly and watching what's in front of you so you can plan your usage of gas/clutch/brake/shifter, what are you going to be focusing on instead? Your music? Something you wanted to buy at the store? Something you forgot about at work? Most times it isn't going to be more focus on the road. Automatics lead to not paying attention and speeding up too fast and slamming on the brakes as you get too close to the person in front of you. Sorry. If everyone was driving a manual, people would pay more attention to what's in front of them to be smooth to avoid the 487 clutch operations in traffic.

I drive an older Honda with an automatic. Slow driving is way easier. Don't have to worry about the friction zone when riding the rear break. I'm looking for a bigger bike now but my cm400a made a great beginner bike

I have been a DCT owner for 7 years now. I have the 2013 NC700X which was the second generation of the DCT. Mine only has 3 modes of operation, D-Mode (Eco), S-Mode (Sport), and MT-Mode (Manual). D-Mode is more economy, the bike shifting into six gear at 40 MPH. Requires full throttle opening to have the bike downshift into the correct gear to be more responsive. S-Mode has the bike behave how I were to ride it if were a manual. It revs the entire up to 5,500 RPM. Keeping the revs up makes the bike more responsive. In either of these 2 modes up or down overrides can be done using the paddles on the left switch pod. MT-Mode is self explanatory. ABS comes standard with all DCT bikes. It has saved my hide several times from dum-dum drivers. Well worth the extra bucks. I still own this bike and it is one of my favorite bikes as it frees me up to focus more on the right.

Nice looking bike Dan. Not a fan of auto and DCT, clutch control is a safety tool iro moderating power, slow speed manoeuvrability or take power off in a more subtle way than the throttle, one of the fundamental riding skills and how I was taught here in U.K.

I get there is new technology . Yet I want something I just get on and ride. I learned as most folks with a manual transmission. When you get better as a rider you will appreciate it. Just my opinion.
