My husband's eyesight went bad when he was in college. He has never ridden a bike. Eventually he had corneal transplants. He has holes in his vision still so to be safe will never ride, but when I was 55 he helped me learn. When I rode in traffic for the first many times we'd plan my ride and he would make sure to stay right behind me just in case I stalled or downed the bike. I did stall it, but never downed it. It helped a lot knowing that he was there literally protecting my rear end. Married 37 years anyway.

I asked my ex to teach me how to ride when my TU250 was delivered. He pulled up on his Harley and said, "follow me"- he took off, I followed (into Brooklyn traffic). Couple minutes in he yelled, "yer a natural" and sped off into the afternoon. Lesson over, and the rest is history, haha. You're a terrific instructor!! So cool to see another woman on a bike - learning to ride the right way.

CheshireCaddington Exactly. I’m good friends with a couple of my exes. I’d go for a ride with em any day. If I needed to learn to ride & one of then knew how, I’d be very comfortable doing something like that with them.

It happens to all of us trust me. Just get back on and try again. Take an MSF course and you won’t have anyone impatient with you. My Instructors were amazing!!

Agreed @DanDanTheFireman is being patient, calm, and so supportive. It makes a tremendous difference! My husband and I have helmet communicators so he gives me tips and encouragement when I practice and I've found it is so much better than having MSF instructors yelling at you over the sound of 12 motorcycle engines. My MSF instructors were generally fairly patient but they still had to shout just to be heard. Even though I cognitively knew they were mostly raising their voices just for volume there is still a very visceral response to being yelled at and it added to my nerves during the course and while learning.

So cool she got a bike she can flat foot. I saw a guy get his girl a bike she had to tip toe on and dropped her bike day 1 in the parking lot. I told him, imagine if she does that at a red light with a car next to her. Some people just don't use sense.

My husband bought me a 750 Shadow right after I took my first class. I was only 5'4". I could only touch one foot on the ground at a time. We lived only two miles from the dealer and my husband had paid him to ride it to our place for me. What a surprise!!! The next day he called them and kindly asked if he could exchange it for something else that would "fit" me. Pretty sure it was the large tip he gave them the day before that they agreed to be picked up by him and ride it back to the dealer. He then got me a 250 which I have ridden for 8 years now and still enjoy. Considering that I won't be riding across country, it will serve my purposes for the rest of my life, even teaching my children and grandchildren.

@@SUPERKISSO I learned at 55! You can learn and have a great time, too! It's great therapy says my husband. He doesn't ride due to an eye disease, but sends me out to ride when he senses I NEED it! Enjoy!!!

It would be nice if more bike manufacturers had shorter bike offerings. I'm 5'5" with a 29" inseam (so not tall, but not super short either) and the only 200-500cc bike I could flat foot when we went bike shopping was the Honda Rebel. Short riders shouldn't be limited to cruisers, and while experienced riders can get away with not flat footing having a solid footing is really important for someone just learning. You would think a few manufacturers would design smaller standard bikes with shorter seat heights!

Had my first riding class today and I was so embarrassed! I fell twice and couldn’t get used to the clutch and kept stalling…. But in the end I managed to do a few turns on my own and even went up to 3rd gear

Get really good at mountain biking first for handling practice, especially the front brake. Road biking for good traffic riding experience. It gave me good confidence on my first rides.

The clutch on the Rebel is so soft compared to Harley's. It is perfect for beginners, especially people with smaller hands

@@qLxwis I have learnt to go straight and make large turns, and I still fall sometimes unfortunately. Still far from trying the 8 figure, leaning the bike is impossible at this point. But I'm still learning, hopefully I'll be able to ride properly at some point...

I had a similar experience when i tried a scooter with automatic for the first time. So i already got used to clutch+ keeping the rpm in some unexpected situation, so i can just brake and that is all, or just drop the clutch and accelerate out. And well i tried the same with the scooter. But there wasn't any clutch. And keeping the rpm meant keeping the speed. It felt like a ride to Valhalla. PS: 4 years old comment LOL

Yeah....same here...being somewhat familir with stick shifts made the transition to a bike a decent carry over as the concept is exactly the same. Only difference is from a 4 wheel vehicle to a 2 wheel vehicle

She did great!!! I wish I had such a patient and caring coach like he is with her. I love how he said No Big deal if she accidentally breaks something. That alone helps her not worry so much and can focus on getting better. He is such a good coach and amazing support. I'm scheduled to take the class this September. Wish me luck 🙏. Kudos to you girl! I took my beginners riding class this past weekend. I had never rode a bike before. it was quite a lot to learn and stressful. Cant wait to get on and not have to think about those little things that mean a lot (looking where to the area you're going to make a turn) .

When I did training years ago the guy would stand in front of the bike with his hands out so that if u bombed forward he could press his hands on the clutch and brake lever to stop the bike, I went forward a bit fast and hit him in the nuts.

I only started riding a few weeks before her. It would've been great to have someone to show me the ropes. I took the MSF class but it really wasn't enough for me. The MSF instructors were great but there's only so much they could do. I didn't think to practice getting the bike going by only using the clutch. She's on a bigger bike than what MSF provides, plus the bike's brand new and she's on camera. That's gotta be nerve-wracking. Yet she handled it really well. She's got someone to rely on and she's in an empty parking lot. New Riders, if you have this opportunity please take it.

The MSF course is basically a crash course. So helpful for learning introductory skills but no substitute for practice and for taking it slow when learning a new bike. I took the course a month ago and felt like I learned a lot, but I just got a bike and rode it for the first time this week and felt like a fish out of water. So nervous, not comfortable, not confident. My husband has been encouraging me to do short jaunts around our quiet neighborhood (just a few laps, maybe 15 minutes of riding, at a time). I've only done it a couple times but it's already helping my confidence and making me feel a lot more comfortable on the bike. I felt fried after two full back to back riding days at the MSF course, and I know I learn better by building skills slowly, over time, in short spurts so I feel fresh and not totally strung out by the end. I feel like MSF should offer shorter "refresher" classes, where you do 2 hours of riding lessons a week over the course of several weeks and then can practice in between if you have access to a bike. A lot of people would likely learn better that way!

Same here my guy dropped off my bike and moved to another state and asked how am I doing with the bike. He’s supposed to be teaching me but KZfaq is my only teacher. SMH I’ll get it on my own.

Just got my first bike about 10 days ago. I was nervous for a bit, but I'm getting more comfortable. I bought a small bike that I could handle rather than what some new bikers buy and can't handle. Yamaha YZF R3. I feel so free on the road and have noticed I drive my truck more carefully now.

That's what happened to me during the class. I had never ridden before and felt so rushed. My husband who has never ridden took me on as his project. He'd follow me a parking lot 1/2 mile from home and we'd practice there with tennis balls cut in half to mark my swerve, fast stop, and sharp curve turn. Can't tell you how many hours he spent with me in the sunshine, rain, heat, and cold, but he was just as excited to see me pass the DMV test with a 96 at age 56! Now, if I go too long without riding, had a frozen shoulder for a year, I begin all over again getting over the fear and getting comfortable to ride. This video helped me just last week with that. So happy now!!!

My GF took the MSC and missed one question on the written and got a 100% on her driving last month giving her the WA. State MC Endorsement. She rode a few dirt bikes when she was young and she owns a Yamaha two wheel drive sport quad which needs clutch and throttle operation skills. She had experience with all the controls before I asked if she would be interested in riding my 2018 Ninja 400 which is a perfect bike for her. I have been street riding for 43 years and have owned 6 motorcycles and currently ride a 2015 Honda VFR800 as well I have never had a crash... knock on wood!! I also have been riding Utility Quads for work and Sport Quads for fun at the dunes for the last 29 years. So... our first ride together with Babe, we hit our small town of 12,000 people and concentrated on lane positions while riding two bikes, stop lights, stop signs, etc. Ride two was the farm roads where we hit 50 mph and some curves. We advanced on through the seat time rides 4 more times hitting a bigger city and dealing with traffic, until last night when I took her out on Interstate 5 and reaching her fastest speeds of 70 mph( she said she was surprised to look at the Speedo and see 83 mph while closing our rider gap. She was nervous but she has done excellent so for aging skills and confidence each ride as I keep throwing new stuff at her. Target fixation and intersections were topic number one as this is where MC Riders usually have the large majority of accidents. Funny, I got text the other day about a deal on Perrelli tires lol! We both ride with full gear all the time! We watched your video together and we laughed because we use the word Babe as much as you guys do ha ha! Cheers!!

I had never ridden in my life other than on the back of a motorcycle once with a brother-in-law. I got a 94% on my driving test at the ripe old age of 55! Can't remember the written test at all. Not so nerve wracking I guess. BTW, my husband still has never ridden and won't because of his poor eyes. Just took one class and practiced, practiced, practiced!

Nikki you are awesome! Clutch control is a big key to riding. Every time before I take off I spend a little bit doing the rock while the engine warms up. Helps reinforce that friction zone feel. You got a great teacher too. Keep that head up and look thru the turns. Ride safe!

I am so glad that you made this series with Nikki. it is helpful for an experienced rider to tell you what to expect starting out but to say someone in the learning stages getting coached was more helpful to me to understand. As someone who is looking to get on the street (ridden mostly off-road), this video shows it’s ok to start at a snails pace until each thing becomes a little easier, thus building confidence. Good job teaching, my dude. Patience is key.

I love how you teach her- lots of confidence, baby steps, reinforcement. I’m going to be a new rider and I was thinking exactly the same as she was- “no, no I don’t want to do that yet!” Well done DanDanGF too; you made so much progress in one day! I have been searching for a great video on how to learn riding a motorcycle. It has been a refresher course for me. I bought a bike 1 month ago after not riding for about 10 years. Nikki & Dan Thank you for doing these videos and putting yourself out for us to learn with!! I'm just learning to ride my 2017 softail slim this is a pretty intimidating and exciting experience for me!! Its very overwhelming I'm having all the emotions and mistakes nikki's had and then some (broken ankle at msf course 1st time around) I didn't give up got my license the 2nd time around!! Anyway thank you again!! Safe riding!!

You are so patient!! This is one reason I’m learning to ride- my hubby has taught me how to snowboard, skateboard, mountain bike, use his power tools, tow our 43’ 5th wheel, and very soon- once I get my z650- ride! Not once has he ever caused me to feel stupid or been impatient with me.

Glad to see your girlfriend enjoying the rebel 500 dave . Ive had mine for around 2.months and love it . I also added the tank protectors and changed the foot pegs for the flat version. Wishing her all the best with the riding ..

I can relate to her so much! It's so scary getting the feel for the bike you feel like its just gonna take off from you or like speed out of control. I just did my motorcycle course and have to go back to redo my highspeed test (which is why I'm here haha I'm watching a bunch of your videos to educate myself so i can hopefully pass next sunday!) I love your videos they are so helpful!

This is the same bike I got as my first. It's great as a 5'5 female I can firmly flat foot when at a stop. Plus the bike is light enough that I'm strong enough to hold it up if need be. Love it.

All these videos are priceless. I just started riding but msf course is cpl months out so i watch these vids and just practice on my own. I didnt even know how to start a bike couple weeks ago and now i can get up and down in my neighborhood. Im not saying you should just watch these videos and forgo msf class but these vids are extremely helpful..

This is the fourth video i have just watched of your instruction for Nikki. the first was backing into a parking space, i was impressed with the communication between you and Nikki. Your calm positive instruction, hasn't changed in the two years you have been doing these videos. I am assuming your a couple which can be even more stress provoking, But Dan you are an excellent instructor, to have someone ride with you and help advancing riding skills through intercom is priceless. Nikki, your in the best of hands to become a topnotch responsible rider, and on a Rebel at that. Bet three years later your eying the new Rebel 1100. I will continue to enjoy your videos, thanks
