The GR Corolla is a hot hatch from Toyota and the Circuit Edition brings some special touches. On the outside you will notice a forged carbon fiber roof, 18in wheels, and big bulge hood. On the inside you will fin GR performance seats, a digital gauge cluster and 8in infotainment screen. Under the hood is a 1.6L turbocharged inline-3 that produces 300HP & is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Is the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla the BEST new performance car to BUY?

The front duct is blocked off only on the circuit edition due to the instability at high speeds with the rear spoiler. That duct is open on the core and Morizo editions.

Drives me bananas when ppl say “it’s just a Corolla” why would you pay that. It would be like if someone bought a Shelby GT500 CFTP, and you say “it’s just a mustang”. There’s different trim levels of all variants that don’t really make it just a Corolla or just a mustang

The 2024 Circuit Edition will have those side vents functional, and the reason the trunk is so shallow is because the battery has been relocated back there and it has a massive, thick foam insert. If you wanted to relocate the battery to a smaller antigravity battery to one of the sidewalls, you could remove the insert and gain several cubic feet of storage

@@lilripsta911 Firstly - only talking about inside. It's much older - but is styled as a performance car. The Corolla however, is styled almost exactly as what you would get from a 20k A-B Corolla. If you disagree with this - that's up to you - but I'm giving my honest opinion of the Corolla. It doesn't mean the whole package is bad - but the interior is very close to being the same as the same car half it's price or less.

I really enjoyed my GR Corolla Core ownership; loads of fun to drive. It was always a placeholder though for my unicorn search for a new 2023 CTR. Unexpectedly in late August I was able to realize my dream so said a fond farewell to the GRC. Loving my new pale blue (Sonic Gray Pearl) 2023 Type R; definitely a heart throb. The Integra Type S was never a contender. Thanks for your fun review!

As a former 2019 Type R owner and now a 23 GR Corolla owner I feel like the GR is just a more raw experience. The sounds from the engine/exhaust alone put it over the top. Is the Type R faster around the track? No question. Better seats? For sure. But I honestly think the Corolla is the more fun car to drive. The Type R is good, but it feels too clinical. It lacks passion.

@@jameshuegli3534 Curious on your thoughts on this. Was in the market for a CTR and GRC. Found a FL5 for a 'good' price and went for it, but am still on a long waitlist for a GRC CE (probably 1 year from now?). From what I've seen, the major selling points of the GRC is the AWD system. Where I live is really grid-like, there are no twisty fun backroads at all, and I don't feel that I would be able to make use of the strengths that the GRC brings to the table based on the roads near me. I could potentially trade in the FL5 if the GRC blows me away, but the perfect world is having both as they're great cars that excel in different areas. The way I see it is the CTR's strengths are the engine, driver inputs (steering, shifter, etc.) and weaknesses being its size and FWD. The GRC on the other hand is really the reverse, where you give up a bit of driver inputs and engine platform for an AWD system that is smaller and more nimble. All in all, I'm not dissatisfied in the slightest with my CTR, but still wonder about the 'what ifs'. But anyways, as an owner of both how do you think they both compare in a city with less fun, very straight roads? Would the more capable engine of the CTR be a better fit for this and the GRC a stronger candidate for backroads where its nimbleness can be fully made use of?

@@zach2954 Great questions. I think you’re right in a lot of ways, but I disagree on a few points. Here’s how I see the strengths/weaknesses of both cars. CTR Pros: Bigger trunk/hatch - if you’re constantly moving kiddos/back passengers with lots of cargo this is good, more powerful engine that’s tuned great (more on this in a minute), better seats and overall interior quality and best in class shifter, and more track capable CTR Cons: Size - I think it’s actually *too* large, FWD, engine/exhaust are boring (aka vacuum like). GRC Pros: AWD, small nimble chassis, great shifter (requires more effort, but feels almost more connected to the car), fantastic engine/exhaust note, great engine tuning, heated seats/steering wheel. GRC Cons: Seats aren’t as bolstered as CTR, interior is cheaper (actually doesn’t bother me though), stereo isn’t as good as Bose in CTR. Overall the CTR is the more focused drivers car, capable of faster lap times, while the GRC is the more fun-to-drive daily. Don’t get me wrong, the GRC into slouch when it comes to performance, it’s just not taking things as seriously. The sounds…the sounds alone make it such a better car. If I were you I would try to get a ride in a GRC to see what you think. If you like it, trade in your FL5 (it will hold it’s value) until you can get a GRC. I don’t miss my Type R at all. Driving the GRC is more of an “event.” The cold start sounds, the exhaust note, the turbo sounds, even the uniqueness of the 3 cylinder.

@jameshuegli3534 Thanks for your impressions. I actually got to test drive a loaded core recently and can see why the size + AWD system is a lot of fun. The exhaust note is definitely a lot more unique than the i4 in the CTR. Other than the interior, my only complaint was the steering felt a bit too loose for my preference. Overall tho it's an excellent car. Been thinking a lot about trading in the CTR and I feel if I went GRC to CTR, or CTR to GRC there's things I'd miss from each. I'm leaning towards grabbing a used GRC core as a second car down the line instead. I'm a bit partial to the styling of the FL5 but I think the FL5 will sound a lot better with an aftermarket exhaust, so we'll see how my thoughts change after I get one. But overall I think both invoke a lot of excitement but in different ways, we're lucky that Honda and Toyota are still making excellent manual transmission performance cars in the era of electrification.

Those wheels are not exclusive to the Circuit. They are the same wheels as the '23 Core came with. The '23 model only had unique wheels for the Morizo edition. Core/Circuit had these same multi spoke gloss black wheels. I believe for the '24 model year the '23 Morizo wheels now come on the GR standard.

I really like a lot about the GR Corolla. You picked the right time of day to shoot that color. As a fan of red I have to say that color is really disapointing. 95% of the time it looks like dark burgandy. They should have offered the red on the Supra and GR86. For $44k it needs to come as equiped on the RZ JDM model. For dad friendly cars, I'm not getting this trned with this car, the Type-R and Type-S having no rear A/C vents.
