I haven’t had much experience with the 5.7x28 cartridge so I thought I’d give it a try. Turns out, it has changed my mind on what I want to carry for personal defense.

I don't know what's up with this armchair comments section b.s., but I guarantee you don't want to get in a fight against 5.7. James Reeves at TFBTV has been making videos for years about it. Of course the baddest of the bad FN SS190 will go through both sides of a Kevlar helmet shot from a pistol, but even the consumer level loadings are pretty devastating. Cutting through a single side of a kevlar helmet and punching through soft armor with ease. Plus James has a hilarious clip of him doing full auto one handed with a P90. Does 5.7 suck against reactive steel targest? Yup! Can you double and triple tap to overcome that? Yup! So would you rather get in a fight against 9mm or 5.7? I think I'd rather have someone missing follow up shots with 9mm than lasering me down with 5.7. I took my wife out shooting recently and she's never shot my Rock 5.7. She went 27/27 (I have extended mags) on my MGM Spinner at 15 yards alternating top and bottom paddles. 100% first try on a gun she's never shot.

I don't know how anyone can see what the 5.7 did to the clay and say that it would be ineffective. its changed my mind, I'm already looking to build an AR chambered in 5.7. I'm going to contact Robinson Armament and ask them to make a 5.7 XCR-L option!!

Useful discussion! BUT the 5.7 ammo price has gone down to LESS than premium self-defense 9mm! Don't forget that 5.7 comes in a FIFTY round box, versus usually twenty or twenty-five for hollow-point 9mm. It is a different kind of cat. All of the old time shooting experts say that "Placement beats Power" and that does not even consider quick and accurate follow-up shots.........................elsullo

That’s true. The price difference isn’t that much different when we are talking about 9mm defensive ammo but the trade off would be target/practice ammo will be cheaper with 9mm so people may be able to train more. And shot placement is always king!

It depends on the ammo you’re using. If you get armor piercing rounds then yes. That goes for any caliber. If you’re using hollow point or some other defense round then probably not but it also depends on shot placement.

Other than armor piercing or possibly a 27 gr. bullet, the 5.7x28mm was designed to expend it's energy quickly inside the tissue and tumble inside the cavity. Using ammo with the 40 gr. V-max bullet stop the threat very effectively without hazard of overpenetration.

In a self-defense scenario, it's best to hit vital spots - but this is VERY difficult to do. Second best is to make lots of leaking holes quickly. While 5.7x28 can do the job, it's not the best pistol round for this purpose when compared to other alternatives. 5.7x28 is low-recoiling, flat-shooting, and most guns carry a high round count - but - it doesn't deliver the energy or create quite the size of leaky holes that make it ideal. In a full-auto weapon (like what the Secret Service uses), this is awesome. For a one-bullet-at-a-time pistol, it falls a bit short.

I don't think that it is as good as 9mm. That being said several advantages. Higher capacity and velocity. Lower recoil probably cut split times in half. I might just get a 5.7 and try it on Wild Hogs. I don't think the results will be good but, I could be wrong. Still though in theory might be the best survival centerfire round depending on your environment.

Running +p+ Underwood 147gr with the GoldDot HP it is delivering substantial energy. I have killed several 200 plus pound hogs with that setup. I can't remember the chrono readings but it was about 1300. Usually they will only take a few steps are go right down. I recently got +p+ 90gr in. It has the Lehigh copper screwdriver tip bullet. I plan to test that out. Should be over 1600 fps from that rig.

Huge disagree. You're not watching Buffman's videos then, he's shown ammo that is absolutely lethal and the speed of follow up shots is stupid fast. Is it level with 9mm? No, but its very close. 18 inches in gel with 4 inch cavitations with lightning fast shots? You'd be stupid to believe that's not effective.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 2 ай бұрын
@robarmstrong5404 Lethal isn't the question. If lethality and follow-up shots were all that was required, we would have settled on the .22LR a hundred years ago. For all the hype on the 5.7, we have every right to expect more than mediocrity, and some of us don't plan on needing five shots to do the job. I am fine with niche calibers. But I lean towards 10mm Auto. If I require a follow-up, fine, shit happens. But it isn't Plan A for me. Our job is to stop aggressive behavior. Stopping is different than lethality. It doesn't take much to poke a lethal hole. Hitting them hard enough in the process to convince them they are done and have better things to worry about takes more than what I am seeing from 5.7. Hard pass. I have never been anything but underwhelmed by 5.7, even setting the bar pretty low.

@geminiascension7018 Lethality isn't indicative of efficacy for defensive purposes. A piano wire has killed people. That doesn't mean we carry a garrote for self-defense. The 5.7x28's lethality isn't in question. Its efficacy for defensive use is. The best 5.7 loads struggle to match the worst 9mm loads. The 5.7 is objectively inferior to other standard duty handgun calibers. That it can still kill is irrelevant. If someone is attacking you, you plug them in the chest, and they bash you brain dead in the skull with a brick before staggering off and dying, your round has been lethal, but ineffective. If you put a 12 gauge bean bag round on them and they instantly double over and collapse before evacuating their bowels and flopping around on the ground weazing until taken into custody, your round has been effective, despite its decided lack of lethality. As defenders, a cessation of hostility is the desired result. The 5.7 isn't as persuasive in this regard as other duty rounds, which is why it remains far less accepted in this capacity than the rounds it was supposed to replace three decades after it was created.
