Today product design engineer Vincent Valderrama joins Epicurious to pit a $100 Black + Decker toaster oven against an upscale $600 model from June in a series of common oven tasks. From baking sugar cookies and toasting sliced bread, to making a melty chick parm and roasting a whole chicken, Vincent breaks down which tasks the high-priced option outperforms the budget conscious option on, and which ones it doesn’t.

I've had that exact B&D for almost 7 years. And while I've been tempted to upgrade many times over the years, it does work admirably. Especially for the $50 it cost me on Black Friday all those years ago. Over the years I've learned its quirks and made it work for me. I've used it from everything from sourdough bread to cheesecake to reheating fried foods. I almost always run it at full tilt 450°f w/convection because as the video shows, it doesn't hit the set temperature. I've verified this with an oven thermometer and infrared thermometer. Maxes out at about 425°f. I placed a piece of unglazed travertine tile that fits directly on the bottom coils to regulate the temperature better. It's basically a pizza stone. It stays in there all the time and makes the oven hold heat much better. I often rotate what I'm cooking at the halfway point to get even cooking. I'd use it more than my regular full-size oven. Especially in the summertime.

Smart. I have a $100 convection oven I’ve had for about 8 years. The increase time function has stopped working, but it’s still working well otherwise all these years later. I think Americans should stop replacing their appliances every chance they get. Imagine the waste in our landfills from all these devices that still work (with some quirks we could live with).

I have a KitchenAid toaster oven that my grandma gifted me when I graduated college. I looked it up once and I’m pretty sure she paid $150 for it unless she got it on sale. It’s finicky and doesn’t heat evenly, but it does it’s job and it’s nice to have in the summers when I want to bake or roast something but I don’t want to heat up my apartment with my standard oven. I’d never drop $600 on a toaster oven, though. I can think of several ways my money would be better spent. I wouldn’t even have the oven I own if it weren’t for my grandma.

I've had a Hamilton Beach version of this concept for over a decade (though mine is considerably taller than either of the ones in this video). I've found that the best way to use it is to set it at maximum temperature and just adjust cook time for whatever item. Depending on what I'm cooking, I'll also use the second rack (which it appears neither of the ovens in the video has, or has space for), wrapped in aluminum foil to use as a heat spreader for the top element. So if I'm cooking a frozen pizza, I put the foil rack over it until it's time to brown the top. That way I can get a nice crispy crust without burning the top. For something like roasted pork chops or chicken fingers, that wouldn't be required. Anyhow... I really like my little convection oven, but I wouldn't spend $600 on one even if it was perfect. A little attention and a little foil makes a much cheaper oven work very well.

I had maybe the same one! It was awesome...even came with the rotisserie spit for the chicken. Even though it got hot, it was certainly cooler to my place than using the real oven...perfect for summer, or a '2nd' oven when needed. The only thing I REALLY hated about it was the timer. It was pretty accurate (it was a twist style to 'x' minutes)...and shut off the unit when it was done...but it DIDN'T start it!! Not a big deal for a 7 minute item...pretty big deal for a 1h30m slow roasted rotisserie chicken (since it DID start the spit, just NOT the heat!). But at $80 (at the time), a DAMN fine machine! User error aside, the HB was a great investment!
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobd2659 It sounds like the exact same thing I have. I've never used the spit as I assumed that it would make a hideous mess inside the oven. I bought it exactly because I got tired of heating my house up with the big oven. I've been known to use it outside or in the garage too.
@bobd2659
@bobd2659 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBrokenLife The spit works pretty well! As long as you have the drip pan on the bottom and the chicken isn't huge, it doesn't make much of a mess. You'll still want to wipe the inside down afterwards just in case though, but really only the sides might get some spatter. Plus side is you also get all the juices from it to make an AMAZING gravy! It's so great for holidays/parties as an 'extra' oven!

The June just sounds like a cash-grab in my opinion. Adding a smart device to a toaster oven doesn't make it better and shouldn't make it more expensive. It's even worse that for the $600 you don't get all the bog-standard accessories that make half the features and settings even usable. For 600 bucks I can get a standard full-electric range/oven, a toaster, an Air fryer, and hell throw in the black and decker.

A few other potential benefits can be: using a toaster oven versus a regular oven can put less heat into the space (useful in summers) and can be easier to use for people with disabilities. You often place toaster ovens at countertop level versus the more common below countertop oven and the small trays can be easier to move for people who are physically limited.

My grandma has a "real" oven and a toaster oven, and it's surprisingly useful to have two ovens for cooking, she always has some freshly baked bread ready, because she can bake mains and sides at the same time, which is cool for stuff that cant go into the oven together.

One of the biggest Pro's for the June oven is that you can use traditional oven cleaners like Easy-Off. Depending on how often you use a toaster oven and what you use it for the June is a really good buy because there really aren't any toaster ovens that size for less than $500 that you can clean with Easy-Off and cleaning those toaster ovens requires constant cleaning after any greasy cook like bacon or broiling fatty foods. If you don't constantly wipe them down you learn they are a pain to clean and the vinegar/baking soda wears down the non-stick coating over time.

I have a Hamilton Biotch toaster oven and I like it, although it has that front side cooler tendency too. I use the thing about 5 times a week - almost as much as my microwave oven. If I use the tray, I like to lay down a sheet of aluminum foil first in order to keep foods from sticking to the tray. But I prepare frozen salmon and toasted sandwiches in the thing all the time. One of the features that I liked about it when I saw it on Amazon was the fact that it doesn't have a lay-down front door on it but instead a door that rolls up over the top of the oven. This prevents you from dripping crap on the hot glass door when you slide it out of the oven. I've had several toaster ovens and this Hamilton Biotch unit has been a very nice and DURABLE oven. The other ones I've had tended to stop working pretty quickly. I don't spend a lot of money and so it only has two dials on the front of it - one for temperature and one for timer. That's all I need. I'm not trying to send a man to the moon.

It makes it break in a way most consumers won't initially think of and is very easy to time the break, it's a quite clever way to completely screw you over. Seriously though, same goes with modern dryers and a lot of modern refrigerators. Be it cold and moisture or heat and/or rapid movement, touchscreens just don't mix with these machines. Control boards in general don't, but at least without a touch screen you can put it in a safer space.

I have the Black & Decker oven. The temperature settings are inaccurate, by 25-50 degrees and the spattering from a roasting chicken coats the inside of the oven and cannot be cleaned effectively. Tater tots require turning the oven to 450 and cooking for 30 min.

I have a similar convection oven from another manufacturer and I learned early on that clean up is a nightmare if you're not careful about what goes in it (and how). Mine is an old school model that has no digital controls so I'm able to take it outside, spray it down with oven cleaner, and then turn the hose on it. No joke. I've actually pressure washed mine before because it was so gross. So, yes, be mindful what you use these things for. Roasting a chicken in a baking bag would probably be OK as long as the bag wouldn't grow to reach the elements.

All brands need to have an interior that accept 1/4 sheet pans which are also pretty consistent with most other baking dishes/pans. Also they are too shallow vertically in the interior.

Most people probably already have a full size oven and don’t need anything extra the June can do. If anything they want the black and decker to save money on electricity or gas because it’ll heat up faster

I never use the setting for preset food options neither on my microwave or oven. Doing everything manually is the best. So going for a mid range one would be better for me, since the 100$ is kinda clunky.

Just from the first test, the Black&Decker is better than the June. The designers of the June obviously put more time into the bells and whistles than making it cook effectively and evenly.

Individually, I’m not a fan of giving up control. I want to adjust the settings myself reaching unique specifications for my meals. For others, I can see the appeal of pressing a single button to cook something, but it is not something I want.

Ha! He doesn't even push a single button to to do things on the June he has to go through a menu and select things multiple times. My toaster oven has a dial for temp and cook time and it worked fine for a decade of daily use! Sadly the top element burnt out 2 weeks ago. I am looking for something identical to replace it.

LOL I have the black and decker model, and I got it for $62 like 6 years ago. It cooks well enough, but the buttons sometimes work and sometimes doesn't, you have to wriggle the buttons and find it's sweet spot. It doesn't have a fan in the rear, you circled the indent for a 12" pizza, the fan is on the right side which is so stupid, fans should be on the rear or even better on top.

Yes I have the black and decker one too and the buttons are so finicky. I ended up setting the timer as high as it goes cuz changing it is too annoying. Plus it's recently stopped beeping when it's done so even making toast I pretty much have to watch it the whole time.
