Looking for a used Audi S5? - carsforsale.com.au/audi/s5
You could be forgiven for thinking this week's car is a touch too new for ReDriven, but some examples of this iteration of Audi's S5 and S4 are pushing 4 years old.
The fortunate thing (though not if you own one) is that much in line with other Euro cars, depreciation has been an absolute killer, with some dropping their price by nearly 40% in just a few years.
That means, if you're after one, you can get a very new(ish), very good(ish) car for 10s of thousands less than you may have otherwise paid just a short time ago.

I should have clarified that I did mean the Sportback. The coupe is good too but not as good as the Sportback. In terms of colour, I quite like the Nardo Grey, but I’m never good with colour though.

Same here in NZ, those turbocharged or supercharged Audis get upto the limit so quickly you almost feel like you are overshooting and never fully able to use the full potential. Driving a b8/8.5 RS5 gives the best of both worlds I feel since you work hard for the power through high rpm if you want rapid, but slower work can also feel just as dramatic since the V8 provides such a great soundtrack for all driving styles.

Have had an original B8 S5 (V8, auto) for the last 4 years. Amazing car to drive but oh lawdy, servicing nightmare! Fuel pumps, injectors, and even an intake manifold failure has added up to a fortune in repairs. But when it works, it's perfection. Much more power than you can reasonably use and so comfortable on a long drive. Seats are the best I've sat in and at 14 years old the interior still looks new in many places. The ZF auto is next level good and much easier to live with than the later v6's DCT. Sadly a baby on the way means it has to make way for another dadwagon and despite the heartache (and definitely the wallet-ache) it's given me I'll really miss it. Also imo the original design is still the prettiest and the V8 can't be beaten for noise and character.

I've admired A5s for many years and last year I was looking for an AWD sports car and bought a convertible 2018 S5. I LOVE that car! Power when you need it, great tech, and beautiful looks. A couple issues covered by warranty- a window regulator and burnt out light on the start button. Otherwise no issues. Great on fuel with highway driving, but if you drive fast on regular streets it can use fuel fast. Highly recommended if you need a small performance car.

Great review! I couldn't agree more with your assessment of this car. As the owner of a 2018 S5 Sportback for 10 months now. It's been essentially trouble free and is a blast to drive. I have full confidence in it. Handling, power, tech features - it's the full package. Your comment about the anti-pinch windows is bang on.... after installing tint the 'drag' on the pristine tint was enough to cause it to be overly sensitive.. it has become better as the tint get's "dirtier" with oils and whatnot, to allow it to slide better. I've installed 034 Motorsport's CF air intake and CTS inlet pipe, along with 034's Stage 1 Tune. Intercooler ready to be installed. Glorious.

I drive a 2020 S5 Sportback in Glacier White metallic with black optics package. The car is a design masterpiece, and what a beast it is to drive. We are so lucky here in Australia to be offered the petrol engine version. Like, today I was coming out of a corner onto a long straight and decided to floor it and wait for that delicious upshift sound. Long story short, at way above 100kph it was still in 3rd gear and revving itself up effortlessly. What a feeling.

Great video! I researched heavily and considered lots of options before ending up with a 2018 S5 Sportback. I'm curious if the one you drove had the dynamic steering option - I have it equipped on mine but have not driven one without. Some reviewers have raved about the dynamic steering and some have said to skip it. The steering feel on mine is good, but it does feel heavy in the corners. The virtual cockpit is a must - a few base models do not have this but it's rare to find without. The 19" wheels (same as your test car) do not like potholes - I had to replace a new set almost immediately because of sidewall failure. Having come off of only driving a manual transmission for 20 years I wish there was a manual option, but the ZF 8 speed is a masterpiece. Great exhaust note and a beautiful noise on shifts when using the paddles or sport mode. 46,000 miles on mine now and no issues. Tremendous car, so much luxury and sport for the money.

I’ve got the A5 252bhp coupe, I absolutely love it. 95% of the tech that’s in the one in the video, I feel it’s plenty quick enough if you don’t consider the public roads a racetrack. Very comfortable, 30-40mpg depending on what road I’m on. Currently waiting to get a new waterpump fitted, current one is leaking. Had a couple of switched fail but easily fixed myself. Had to get additional soundproofing put into the parcel shelf as it vibrated with bass. Have been tempted to upgrade the standard speakers as they are lacking. Have done a three hour journey with 3 adult passengers and no complaints. Had the previous A5 and the rear was cramped for the same people. Audi brake assist is shite, switch it off. It’s dangerous. I use the adaptive cruise and lane assist all the time, but it is a little glitchy, on a few of my normal routes it gets confused about the speed limit. Really happy with it, about to hit 100,000 miles with no warranty and as said in the video, parts are expensive. Planning to get the engine and gearbox remapped with the intention of selling it in 12 months, just because I want to know what it’s like with a little extra.

I have a 2018 S5 Sportback and I absolutely LOVE it! I have the drive mode set to "Individual" with transmission and engine in "dynamic". I have found that the suspension and steering in dynamic is just too harsh. To fix that, I have them set in "auto" mode. When the car "senses" it's being driven hard it automatically puts the steering and suspension in "dynamic". For cruising around town though, the steering and suspension is a lot more mild in "auto". I think it's in "comfort" until you mash it. Also, in "dynamic", if you select "sport" mode, the car opens up the exhaust valves and really makes some great noises on acceleration at WOT. However, in "dynamic/sport" mode, it will only shift up to 7th gear. So, if you're just cruising on the interstate, take it out of "sport" mode to get 8th gear and optimum fuel economy. I have gotten close to 400 miles on a full tank on the interstate. Love this car.

Another great presentation Adam. You are such a well rounded guy, having big manly hands but smooth soft baby skin…..lol. The off takes were nice to see because anyone saying all the letters and numbers would have difficulty, a true tongue twister. How much time does it take for you to write the script and how much time to video it? I know you mentioned 3 days on another video, but that was also research and cleaning the car, etc. Cheers mate. Fred
@ReDriven
@ReDriven 2 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha cheers Fred. It takes hours to keep the hands manly yet the forearms smooth! The time it takes varies on the car. For example, anything with loads of variants that has been around forever (eg Amarok) takes days to research and write as we reach out to loads of mechanics, technicians, parts suppliers, owners groups and owners in general, plus we read through reliability reports and consumer satisfaction surveys and online forums to gather the information. I write the script as the info comes in and try to get as much seat time as possible to gather the driving impressions and this varies on every car. The filming itself takes about a day and then Sam gets into editing, again which takes a few hours. So, something that has one variant and was only available for a short period of time, approx 3 days in total, something like the Amarok, approx 5 days. - AK

I have a 2018 s5 sportback and you nailed it. If you're in it for performance, don't bother with an RS... Spend your money on a tune and a couple other upgrades (intercooler/intake/downpipe) and you'll be destroying RSes and most other cars on the road, certainly ones in this price range. My favorite part, which you touched on, is at the touch of a button you can go from a comfortable highway cruiser to a shit-your-pants rocket ship. I have the 034 motorsports stage 1 tune...using the e85 version of the tune is next level. (they're supposed to have a high octane tune for the non Americans soon, which should be similar numbers)

have a b9 a4 quattro s line. actually, for looking b8 a5/s5 not bad at all which i prefer, but just the interior is too old. so after test drive all of them, i picked B9 gen a4 quattro over the B9 a5 quattro because a5 looks sporty but drives not as sharp as a4, samething happened when i tried the 330i and 430i. very interesting....

It's a great car. I think if you can get the S5 TDI version get that. It's just as quick as the petrol variant and will come with a lifetime warranty on all of the diesel parts of the car. Because of diesel gate, here in the US we have pretty much everything diesel on our car replaced for free. Audi replaced the DPF filter a couple of years ago free of charge and this year one of the glow plugs gave in and they replaced that free of charge as well. Combined this would have cost about $5000 ($500 for the glow plugs issue). But because of dieselgate warranties it's free.

12:40: Very true. Most performance cars today have way too much power for public roads. With all the radars, speed cameras, variable speed limits (smart motorways) and traffic... really what's the use? I'm very tempted to trade in my Jeep SRT for a Lincoln Aviator or Genesis GV70 soon because the moment I step on the gas, the cameras and cops see AND hear me coming.

Yes, rattles coming from rear parcel shelf and front speaker grille even with the Bang and Olufsen upgrade only when listening to AM radio. Went to stereo shop had added extra dampening and glue got it sorted. The non touch screen MMI is a pain, escpecially considereing my cheaper other car has a touch screen MMI. Brake dust is an issue with the softer pads. Next service 30K is new pads and rotors. But the performance is scintillating. The tech in it as standard, other cars only now are catching up to this car. Get around 9lt per 100kms. Gets driven fairly enthusiactically, a joy to drive and experience

How quick is it compared to the RS5? And how much does it cost to get a decent tune running on it? I personally like the styling of the S5 a lot more than the RS model. I think the S5 just has that really clean silhouette, it's like an attractive athlete who dressed themselves up in a suit for the presentation. What do you think of it in a daily drivers perspective? Also, is the comfort mode really as it is? Like actually comfortable, because that's sounds amazing. From what I hear the Audi's ride a lot smoother than the 2 other German counterparts.

@@smithjohn2416 it will be slower as only a single turbo compared to twin turbo RS models. S5/S4 as a daily driver is a great thing. VW products love getting a little tickle and once done, you get similar performance without have to spend an extra $20K or more for it.

2018 B9 prestige owner advice and observations: seat bolsters can wear quickly. you should wrap the steering wheel as its scratches easily and gets shiny. the center console door locks if you dont' bring it up all the way (annoying). no touchscreen option which sucks if you use Andriod Auto, less so if you use iphone. Factory tires are ok but if you are getting used chances are they are on different tires (sorry tyres). Tires on this car strongly impact the ride and handling so keep that in mind. Even on comfort the ride, in my experience, is stiff and my kids get car sick even when I'm taking it easy. New tires and fiddling with tire pressure didn't improve this :(. I will probably install coil overs to address this. There was an issue with the MMI software that had to do with saving preference on parking camera. Make sure you have the latest firmware version. I did have to replace the windshield/windscreen and was told the OEM replacement was the way to go (glad I did). You will want to tint the sunroof with a quality UV /IR film as, even when everything is closed, the mesh does not stop the suns rays enough. I've owned the car for 4 years and only had one instance of sensors tripping out and applying the brakes while driving (must have been a false read). Luckily I was going that fast but it was still jarring.

We own a 2019 S3 Hatch and I'd always lusted after an S or RS4 Avant or the 5 coupe. Never buying another Audi again until they get a touch screen. Using the dial is so combersome, especially with Apple Carplay. Performance wise I can't think of ever needing more acceleration than the stock S3 can give, so I'm sure the S5 would be an awesome and more planted drive than the S3 which can be a bit nervous on B roads.

I have a 2019 S4 Daytona Grey with Black Package and Carbon Pack, I think that is right. Really a very good car, yes it is a bit of a sleeper, and if you press it the numbers on the dial increase very quickly. I have had no problems reliability wise. I have come from SLK’S and CLK’S (particularly good car). The S4 is better, the ride is way more responsive and reassuring, the engine is stronger, the 6 pot callipers up front really work well . The older mercs feel built tighter than the new ones and this S4 feels very tight. If you push it the fuel economy is not good, mind you it’s a V6 Turbo. One point is drive select, dynamic sport mode the adaptive dampers are a hard ride, but you are very planted, I don’t mind individual and the settings the same as dynamic sports but with the softer dampers settings, you get the sharper throttle, transmission, steering, extra burbles from the exhaust without the bone jarring on a bumpier surface. The handling is still quite reasonable. I’d buy one again any day and I have 5 year warranty and servicing package, my wife is an excellent negotiator.

Driving a 2019 S5 SB here. It's really a perfect all around package. Sometimes I get squeaks but nothing terribly annoying. The car is faster than you can reasonably use on roads, the A5 is plenty fast but at least you can enjoy the S5 sound all the time, if not the acceleration. My fuel consumption is pretty good, actually right about 8.9 in city/highway driving. The car is not at all a gas guzzler if you drive it gently, and my best inter-city trips have seen 6.7 l/100km. I'm glad I don't have the B9.5 piano black (impossible to keep scratch free) and fingerprint magnet touch screens.

Guys as an Aussie now living in Europe… let me say Audi Australian arm is really sticking it to every Audi owner! I had an A3 back in Oz and Audi dealership ripped me blind for service costs. In Europe it’s not only cheaper to buy an Audi but the parts and service costs are only 1/3 of the costs in Australia! Australian Audi owners are being ripped off big time when compared to Europe. Plus for all Audi cars especially high performance models you must change the oil and filter every 6 months or 5k to 6k kilometers. Don’t leave it to 10k it’s way too long of a service interval… I can tell you that doing this will help your engine last for thousands of kilometers and many years of stunning motoring enjoyment! Great videos guys! You might need to use more internationally friendly terms too… lol Stuffed or doggy are words not many know about outside Australia!
