BMI can mislead in more than 20% of people. If you are very muscular, very tall or very short, your BMI isn't a good representation of your health. Much better is the Waist/Height ratio. Measure your waist at the belly-button and divide this number by your height (you can use inches or cm, but be consistent). If this number is greater than 0.5 then you've got work to do...

That's not really true either. Your percent body fat is the most valid parameter you can control. Your waist/hip ratio is relevant but is more related to how your body naturally carries fat than how well you control your overall health relative to your weight. Waist/height really doesn't mean anything....

I checked my BMI on two different things. One said lean body mass 181 and the other 191. Confusing. this BMI said my body fat was 24% at 239 pounds. Then the trainer tried to sell me a weight loss program. I do not need a weight loss program I already know what to do. Losing 20 pounds back down to 220 is easy. I purposefully gained weight this winter and when they tested me I was on creatine and was told if you take it in the morning with lots of water it retains water big time. At 220 I can see my abs and vasculatity - At 210 I look cut Though this BMI test from the gym made it sound like I need to be 200 to look cut. Also a bodybuilder once told me a long time ago see how your clothes fit to know where you are at! My wast size even at "239" is still 34 wast line.

@originnone 4 жыл бұрын
It's worth reading how the BMI was derived. If you do, you'll never listen to anyone who quotes it again. The only thing I'll say in defense of having large amounts of lean body mass is that you actually can have too much. Your heart can only do so much to support a lean body builders big physique. But that's not the norm. Most of us who have a strong work out regime will exceed their "target BMI" as they increase their fitness level.

I'm glad you did this. I've started to gain quite a bit of weight since the pandemic and my BMI said (and still says) I'm overweight. I began an intense exercise regime, took up fencing (the only martial art I can do during a pandemic) and redid my diet (more fruits and veggis, and no more soda and less sugar as well as smaller portions). My waist started getting smaller, but then when I stepped on the scale, I had maybe only lost a few pounds, if that. It was discouraging, but it's now encouraging that I am making progress and probably more significant progress than if I had been losing weight.

If you want to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. You gain weight by taking in more calories than you use. If you are male and want to lose weight, it may be good to use an online weight loss calculator to figure out how much calories you should consume to lose weight while still eating enough calories so that your body functions properly (taking into account lifestyle choices each day perhaps like calories burned from physical activity per day and perhaps mental activity per day also).

Momentum=mass X velocity. If you don't have enough mass, you will not be able to perform as well in certain sports. That's just a fact. If I were at my "ideal" BMI, then I wouldn't be able to throw an opponent in judo, for example. Pure muscle and bone like Michael Phelps is very rare. BMI makes everyone feel like a failure.

The "normal" weight range needs to be subdivided into at least three 20 lb. segments. For example, At my height of 63 inches, the optimal weight range for a small-boned (5.5 inch wrist circumference) person like me is between 101 and 120 lbs. (inclusive)... For a 63 inch tall medium-boned (6 inch to 6.99 wrist circumference) person, the optimal range would probably be between 121 and 140 lbs... And for a 63 inch tall large-boned (7 inch to 7.99 inch wrist circumference) person, the optimal range would probably be between 141 and 160 lbs.

So many of these are inaccurate. I'm losing my faith in people called "doctors." The real summary is that your BMI means nothing unless your percent body fat matches the exact number of the underlying assumptions in the calculation that is over 100 years old and was never meant to apply to individuals, only to populations. The ratio of waist to hips has application to how you carry your weight and can affect things like your potential to acquire diabetes or similar disorder but not hear disease. What's important is to have a percent body fat, which is based on your body density (including bone, muscle and fat density) relative to your age and sex. Older people naturally carry more fat, and that's healthy.

My bmi says I'm obese. It's so depressing. I know I'm a bit overweight but obese doesn't seem right. No wonder I'm so unattractive. I'm obese and unhealthy. They say I should weigh less than 200 lbs. I got down to 215 when I was vegan for a few years and I looked like a Holocaust survivor. Everyone told me how unhealthy I looked and that I needed to gain some weight back. They were afraid I was starving myself. But now I'm obese. I'm so sick of this life. I'm so alone all the time. Pinch tests are way off the older you are and the more weight you lost. Example I am 56. I was on steroids for years and exploded to 289 at 6 foot tall. I lost 50 pounds before my ostomy surgery to remove my colon. My colon became blocked and my gut often blew up in size causing more stretch marks than a pregnant woman. I went thru months of chemo after and my weight went back to the 250's. In the past 4 months I lost another 45 pounds. At 6 foot I weigh 205 and still dropping. My skin is no longer elastic and hangs over my waist making my waist look bigger. Under that flap my waist is now 38. Put doctors can grab all kinds of skin making a pinch test way off. Oh yes I have fat. A1C is well within normal ranges. Only time it was ever high was during chemo. During chemo my blood sugar hit the 300's and 400's. Now my average fasting is 92. Half your height for waist is still the best guage. When I was in the Army I weight in the 170's. Skinny like a stick and you could still pinch fat ring around my waist. Pinch test only helps read low body fat content if your muscular.

he's trying to be nice. "it's still used" is the key. get within normal range and stop looking for ways to justify being overweight. the idea of "european standards" wasn't a thing when all of our parents were skin and bones in the 60s and 70s.

He's wrong about heart disease being the number one killer, life itself is, in other words we're all going to die. I'm happy to take a heart attack versus being eaten alive by a grizzly bear for example.

Most people will take this to think that this BMI is not accurate. But most of the overweight people I know my age their BMI IS 35-44. This people see this BMI as a false. But this self same obese people have a lot of visceral fat. They do not exercise. They do not MOVE. Their muscle mass index is extremely low as they do not use their muscles. The only muscles that they use are their jaw muscles and arms to shovel the food into their mouths. When a woman is a size 22-26 they are FAT. plain and simple. They have type II diabetes, high cholesterol and high triglycerides. They gave hypertension verging on kidney issues. They have multiple joint pain and joint replacement due to excess weight on these joints. They have sleep apnea. And they have a myriad of other obesity related medical and lifestyle problems. So their BMI of over 35-43 is a true measure of morbid obesity.

I believe 21.7 to 22 bmi being muscular is best overall for longevity. Funny how people forget that it should be sustainable. That’s why you get these overly big dudes look horrible in old age 💯

Healthy for a girl (just barely), underweight for a guy. For a girl, the ranges are actually supposed to be from 18.7 to 23.8. For a guy, it's 20.1 to 25.0.

This is a cope. If you're out of your normal BMI range, 9 out of 10 times you are overweight and unhealthy. That "muscle mass" turns to difficult fat in a few months.

I think BMI is useful in some contexts, but it should never be used by itself. And this is because BMI uses whole numbers, while the waist/Height ratio uses decimals. If you have a parent who is complete denial that their 5 year old is obese ("it's just baby fat"), you're going to have a harder time convincing them that .1 over the .5 average is a HUGE deal. It's just 1/10th over. It makes no sense to you and I, but remember that parents who have obese children are masters of denial. They are very good at downplaying just about everything. Ask any doctor or nutritionist who works with overweight or obese children. But if you use BMI, you are showing that it's 20 points over the average, that becomes a bit harder to excuse. The trick to convincing a person to change is by eliminating their excuses and crippling their ability to blow things off. BMI is deceptive, but in the right context it is useful. But no doctor should ever go only on the BMI.

The BMI is complete Bullshit. I've been over 200 lbs since I was 25. When I was 34 I was 208 and running a 5:15 mile and pressing 125lb dumbells on my 5th set of incline chest press... leg pressing well over 500lbs with a 6pack. As far as waist in inches goes...also bullshit. I'm built like a damn linebacker and square as hell from my ribs down. I see actual fat people my age or younger wearing the same belt size as me.
