This is my go to 600mm set up after your recommendation. A 600mm lens was way out of my price range, and this set up has gave me some beautiful images. cheers John

I got the canon 300mm 2.8 ii which I use with the 1.4x and 2x mark iii extender all the time. Possibly the sharpest mark ii supertelephoto lens canon ever produced. Sharper than my canon 500mm f4 ii with the 2x extender attached.

I agree about the "wait and purchase later" when it comes to these big primes. Got a good price on my ef300 2.8 mk 2 and use it every week. The only issue I have when using a TC is having it in my messenger bag at sporting events, and the higher center of gravity, especially when the hood is in place. I still haven't decided to go with a 2nd body yet so I switch lenses.

With 2x TC I found it has to stop down to F8 to get good sharpness but f5.6 is still good.

Thank you for the video. I’m a hobbyist wildlife photographer. Committed to DSLR forever. Don’t see any reason to switch to mirrorless. Therefore, not concerned about new releases rather, concentrate on photography. Use EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM + EF 2x III for all kinds of wildlife shots. I mount this great combo on my top-notch body Canon 1D Mark IV which produces a reach of 780mm. Long enough for any wildlife safari. Hope and confident to capture a sprinting Cheetah after its prey somewhere in Africa. Thanks again.

have you try mirrorless before? most of us used DSLR before switch to mirrorless, I can tell you, once you try mirrorless,your will sell your DSLR immediately. The IS, the AF is much more better than DSLR.

I know about mirrorless features. The EVF lag is a massive turnoff for me. DSLR can capture fast action instantly as it sees it at the speed of light - mirrorless cameras are incapable of doing so. I don't miss anything with my pro DSLRs. Therefore, pointless expenditure is out of question. Thank you for chipping in.

@@joewhitnallphotographyhi I am saving up to buy either this lens or the mk ii. Both with 2x converter. The difference is about 1k dollars. Do you think mkii is worth that much more than mki? How would the mki 300mm work with canon r10? For context, for last couple of yrs, I have used a 5D mkii paired with rented telephoto lenses like Tamron 150-600. I myself only owned a sigma 105mm. Just last week, I got the new R10 body with sigma so I’m saving up for a lens now.

@@bladewarm1969 The mki is a great lens but if you can afford it go with the mkii, Its lighter and that'll give you a faster focus speed on a mirrorless camera

Im a Sony A7RV user and looking at Switching to the R5 after the R5 v2 comes out. Reason? The Sony 400mm 2.8 is about 10k-15k.

Sony and wildlife lenses are a joke. When they come back to planet earth prices I will consider Sony, until then I'm camp Nikon

The Canon RF400 2.8 is $13k. Sony did however just come out with their own 300mm f2.8, but it's not cheap either.

@@HenryJones-kh6zx but canon has a legacy lens line up you can use adapted, with no real quality impact. Anyone who's price conscious will be able to take amazing photos without 5x the price.

It's slightly slower with the 2x on but not by a crazy amount

I have tested the Canon 300 f2.8 I against the Sigma 150-600 S. The Canon with 2x teleconv. is not sharper than the Sigma. Ver. I of the Canon is an old lens construction.

I've used it again the C 150-600 and it was sharper to my eye, Not used an S in a good few years now
