@@chrisarterbury6984 Hi Chris, thank you. I’m not from the US - what are W2s? I do t have ‘pay stubs’. My income comes from various clients and it can vary each month. I’m concerned about the income amount being 4 times what it was for the D7. If I’m hearing that right, it’s well over $4,600 CAD a month. I do OK but I have nowhere near that monthly. Under the D7 amounts I would have been perfectly fine… as my income can fluctuate. I’m very used to living on a tight budget and in general Portugal’s cost of living is significantly lower than Ottawa. You mention your SEF is isn’t until 16-18 months?

@@JenShea Hi Jen, for the 4x amount, I believe that is 4x the monthly minimum wage here ~800 euro/month, you would need that amount in your account, not monthly income. As for teh W2, that is the US tax form, you would need your tax papers to open a bank account here and proof of income

@@KatieRaeRae It is really awful news, isn’t it Katie Rae. I couldn’t apply before this coming year, for a few personal reasons, and now that I’ve been ready to get the D7 application going this happened. I’m not trying to go for a year. I want to move and I don’t want to wait to retire so I simply have retirement income. I am self-employed. North America (Canada) is so expensive now… Portugal was a much better option but not only that, I love it there. I’ve no intention of moving again in a year. I don’t want to be a digital ‘nomad’ - I want to settle in to a permanent life in a town on the Silver coast. I’m a few years away from proper retirement and I don’t have investments to draw from. It’s just me and my future Canada Pension Plan and me working ‘from home’ until that day comes. I actually sat here with a glass of Vinho Verde trying to drown my sorrow. this is a great video! love the content y'all have. 👍 I have a particular question: I'm wondering about the letter I need from my employer that documents/verifies that I'm employed - is it just a generic letter with basic info & salary (like the kind you might need to apply for a loan or lease agreement)? OR does the letter specifically need to mention you have the right to work abroad? Is it like a whole process where the Portuguese consulate calls and verifies everything w my employer? Not trying to be shady but I need to know exactly how I'll explain this to HR/my supervisor before hand! 🙏

For an early retiree too young to receive income from retirement accounts or social security, what qualifies as “passive income”? Would having a certain amount of total assets qualify?
@cronoscoin417
@cronoscoin417 Жыл бұрын
Passive income is anything you do not work for. Dividends for stocks, alimony, crypto etc.
@grizfan93
@grizfan93 Жыл бұрын
It depends on how far away you are from traditional retirement age. But, it is my understanding that if you can show enough savings to bridge the gap from your current age to retirement age, you should be good. For example, let's say you and a spouse are planning to use the D7 visa and you are both 55, and you expect to start US social security benefits at age 65. And roughly the minimum is € 13K per year. You have a 10 year gap to bridge, so you'd need to show at least € 130K in savings, as well as the benefits letter from the SSA. These are very rough generalizations, but that's the basic concept.
@donnacosta5633
@donnacosta5633 Жыл бұрын
Passive income is any income that you don't have to work for, such as a retirement pension, interest & dividends, rental income, investment income, etc. Rental income is passive income. If you own your current home, you could rent it to generate passive income. But you'd need to show proof that you were already receiving that income when applying for your visa. I don't think that showing a rental contract with a future date would be accepted as proof of rental income, as anyone can write a fake contract. I think that the minimum amount of passive income you need to qualify for a visa with passive income (D7 Visa) is still the equivalent to the portuguese minimum wage of 760 Euros per month for 2023. I think that if you have enough savings to cover your living costs in Portugal (and the minimum required is 760 Euros per month) you'll be able to get a visa. A residence visa is usually given for 1 year and then renewed. So the immigration service will want to make sure you have enough funds for that first year and subsequentely will check again at time of each renewal. I think you should go for it. Portugal wants to attract retirees and you are a hot candidate. 😎 Good Luck! P.S. Another route is the Golden Visa, where you'd need to buy a property for a minimum of around 300K Euros.

@@donnacosta5633 a couple mistakes in what you posted here. The term "passive income" has a very specific meaning in the context of a Portuguese D7 visa. In that context, it means any income coming from outside Portugal, including salary for work, as long as that work is remote, such as working for a company based in the US, or doing freelance work for Canadian clients. The new D8 digital nomad visa specifically targets people with work outside of Portugal, but people are approved every day who rely on work income from outside Portugal. You need a combination of savings and verified income to make this happen, though. Also, residence visas from the D7 are for 2 years, then renewed for another 3 years. Golden visa has tightened up a lot recently. €500K instead of €300K, and the number of areas within Portugal eligible for GV purchases has been reduced greatly. The key thing to remember is that there is a new visa, the D8 digital nomad visa, and that the term "passive income" for the D7 visa doesn't mean what we traditionally think it means. For the person who originally asked the question; there are two main options for you to look at, the D7 and D8 visas. There's a well-known Facebook group that you can join to get information on best practices and the experiences of hundreds if not thousands of other Americans who have successfully moved.

Thanks for the video. It's a much needed update. I've seen that banks are changing their policies and not wanting to open accounts for foreigners who don't have passive income. Do you know if a bank account is still required for the digital nomad visa?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere Жыл бұрын
You’re welcome, Renee. As of now, both visas carry the same requirement when it comes to NIF and bank account. There are certain catch 22s that exist because these different organizations and companies don’t work with each other. What SEF requires and what banks are willing to do are separate. It’s frustrating, we know. Early on when banks were told, hey, SEF/consulates are requiring a funded bank account, they were like, “Really? So how is that our problem”. It’s a weird attitude to have at an organizational level. One of the issues on the banks side from what we heard is that there was a wave of people that opened an account remotely, moved over and closed the account when they arrived so it was a lot of upfront work for the bank with little reward for them. 🤷‍♂️- Josh & Kalie

So I earn passive income well above the required amount. Same with active income, but my active income is not from a company, but on my own. Also is there any difference based on the "1 year lease agreement" contingency? I think that 1 year apartment lease is the most annoying step to doing the D7 visa. It worries me I would lease a place I don't like the location of, or quality of the place I'm living without giving it a good look through.

I was worried about this step too. I found one in Coimbra that luckily I love. But I remember Josh and Kalie saying to remind yourself that first apartment is not your forever home. Hey there. Are you saying that when we show up at VFS that they’re going to say, “Sorry, you’re out of luck?”
@donnacosta5633
@donnacosta5633 Жыл бұрын
Is that the appointment with SEF in Portugal you refer to? If your application for the D7 visa was already submitted and accepted and you've been given a date for your SEF appointment in Portugal, I conclude that you are being considered for he D7 visa, otherwise they'd already have rejected your application and not give you the appointment date with SEF. They are incredibly busy and don't waste time with non-starters. That''s all good so far. When you go to the SEF appointment, I'd advise you to show more docs than what they are asking. Say, they ask for proof of income for the last 3 months: show them proof of income for the last 2 or 3 years as well. Show them proof that you've paid tax on that income in your country of residence. Portugal is interested in people that will CONTRIBUTE to society when they become permanent residents. Tax dodgers will not impress them. TIP: If someone has a good income but cannot show proof they've paid any tax on it, it could kill the application. If you are a couple with children and intend to move to Portugal permanantly, they'll be more inclined to consider your application as the country needs to grow the population and reverse population ageing and decline. Good luck!

We are currently looking into D7 with a Lawyer named Maria on KZfaq. She is legitimate but 5k per family member seems pricey (family of four) Do you see this as far too much or reasonable for a company that has had 100% success rate for thousands of applicants?
@donnacosta5633
@donnacosta5633 Жыл бұрын
That's far to expensive. I'd call it extortion... I've just heard of a family of 3 that got their D7 visa for a total cost of around 3k and that inclued an hotel stay in London for the first consulate appointment, travel to and from, plus the fees for a portuguese lawyer. Look up Savvy Cat Realty. They are professional lawyers and have good success rate, and deal with absolutely everything including rental contracts. There are a lot of "money sharks" around preying on D7 applicants.

My math isn’t the greatest, but are you saying a couple that is working needs to be making $4,230 a month?

ATTENTION : The portuguese minimum wage will be going up to €760 euros per month starting January 2023. All new applications submitted now should take that into account. If you are a young family with kids and looking for permanent residency in Portugal leading on to Portuguese citizenship, you are in LUCK! Just the kind of people Portugal is looking for right now, because the population is decreasing and the government needs to reverse that trend by attracting young families to settle here. You'll still need proof of enough income but you'll get approved. Guaranteed! And... speaking basic portuguese and paying your taxes will show further PROOF that you are serious about settling here and contributing to society. A sure thing to KILL OFF your application is when you show you have the money but cannot show proof of having paid any taxes on it where you live... (Portugal already has enough home grown tax dodgers and you won't impress SEF. You've been warned!) There are other (much easier) ways to move & settle in Portugal and get a residency visa: learn portuguese, find a job with a portuguese employer, arrive on a tourist visa and go straight to SEF with your signed employment contract to get a residency visa for the duration of your contract. Renew employment contract and residency visa. If you work & pay taxes for 5 years in Portugal, you can then apply for permanent residency or portuguese citizenship. Speaking good portuguese will definitely help...

@@ExpatsEverywhere because the income requirement is so vastly different! 4 times? That doesn’t seem remotely fair… for someone who is self-employed and on their own, that pushes them out… especially if they were making a permanent move. No plans to go back to North America.

At approx 3:05 you mention over €3000 income a month average! That’s $4,600 a month! In the D7 I qualified no problem but I do not make (nor need) $4600/month! I’ve watched twice now and I’m not hearing or reading this any differently! And, you didn’t mention which new visa (by name) you are referring to.
@ExpatsEverywhere

@@JenShea it's an example of a 3 month average for someone that doesn't earn the same amount each month. A lot of freelancers that are project based are liked this. You don't need to make a minimum each month if your monthly average of the past 3 months before applying reaches the minimum wage times 4. So as of right now in 2022, that's €705 x 4 which is €2,820. That is rumored to be changing in 2023 as the minimum wage is set to go up. - Josh & Kalie

@@JenShea hence the title and thumbnail. We knew this would impact a fair amount of people. We're not sure what the % of people it effects is but we'd guess the rule change applies to 30-50% of people and maybe rules out 10-15% of people that we know. We're not sure about people from outside of North America, UK, and Australia that are applying but there's that segment of the global population too that will be impacted. We just don't know by how much. Thanks for sharing and we're sorry to hear how it's impacted you. - Josh & Kalie
