I drive my 01 740IL Sport daily and still enjoy it after 10 years of ownership and 215K miles. Best looking BMW 7 series made in my opinion. Going to try to get it to 300K before engine rebuild.

I've had my 99 E38 740i Short Sport for 2 years and I'm loving every second. It has 151k miles.

Thanks for the vote of confidence and a balanced review. As an owner of 1988 E38 728i mine is clocking nearly 400k km. And enjoy every moment of it.

You forgot the higher stall torque converter and steptronic transmission on the M-sport. Should also mention that the iL "sport" was not only, simply cosmetic, but included EDC suspension. No other real modifications than that. And the later model 750's also had a steptronic transmission, but nothing along the way of torque converter or differential. They too had a "sport" version like the 740iL, but it was pretty much cosmetic also. While my 740iS currently sits at 277k miles, still runs like new (had it since then) and I still have fun driving her whenever I take her highness out of the garage.

I did mention steptronic in the video, but I did fail to mention the high stall converter and edc on the iL. I'll make sure to include that on my update. Thank you!

If anything, it's underhyped. I just picked up my 740d this month and I am in love with it! I take better care of the car than myself.

I 100% agree. Being in the BMW scene for as long as I have been, there's been lots of talk about the e38. It's such a good car, that it's now getting the recognition it deserves from non-BMW enthusiasts.

@@DatBimmerGuy You're right Paul. I had never been a BMW enthusiast myself, but I had always appreciated E38's. Recently, after finding out they'd made a V8 diesel I couldn't resist and had to pick one up! I couldn't be happier with the purchase and I'm willing to sacrifice everything to keep it running :) I will make a detailed video on it soon, so far there is a walk around video on my channel. It's a pretty rare engine and a very unusual one, but that's what I love it for, among other things!

As a 740d owner myself I absolutely agree. There are probably only a few other cars that will allow you to comfortably lock 180km/h on a cruise control like it is nothing and still burn only 10 l/100km with 4 big adults onboard, their luggage and a full tank of fuel. It also smokes most everyday cars in a straight line and it corners leveled. The only downsides are slow engine and transmission response, and parking it in tight places.

The e38 has its pros and cons, but I definitely think it’s a bell of a car. It was one of my bucket list cars for a long time for a reason, and I’m glad I finally got to own one. Keep your eyes out for a new video on the e38 soon.

I daily a 96 750il, black on black. Absolutely a highway dream. Also @3:50 the notion of the V12 being two straight sixes merged together mostly applies to the M70. The M73 in the e38 has less of two of everything, roller rockers, and doesn't have oil spray bar banjo bolts. Both M70 and M73 blocks and internals are different material and design compared to an M20/30/50

I hate to say this but my 2000 740i Sport that I’ve owned since 2006 has been fairly unreliable. I’ve only put 31,000 miles on it in that time. I’ve owned 3 bmw’s, this 740, a 1989 735 and an 87 528e. The 735 was a great car even though it had a bad rep for having tons of electronic gremlins but I didn’t experience that. I had to rebuild the 735s transmission, replaced its radiator and replaced its rubber suspension components and that’s all I did in the 235,000 miles that I drove it. The 528 was great with no real issues in the 3 years I had it but I wanted more room so I went after the e38. Even though it’s been a pain, I will probably keep it for the foreseeable future. I like its styling and it’s heavily optioned for a “short sport” I just wish was more reliable. I’ve had to flat bed it home 3 times. Left it overnight in a parking lot once because it quit but fixed it next day. Most of these problems were faulty camshaft position sensors. The car has been through 6 of them in 31,000 miles and no, they’re not the Chinese versions, but the sensors from reputable sources with the bmw emblem molded into the side of the sensor. It eats CP Sensors for lunch. I could talk about other issues but dont want to write a book.😀

It really is debatable. After driving mine for a full year, I think of it as an oversized and comfy e36, not that it’s a bad thing. But I don’t really think the e38 is like a top 5 BMW. It’s good in its own right, but to me, it really is mostly a cult status.

yes! BMW should have just stopped designing after the e38. The three spoke steering wheel has indents for your fingers and thumbs to grip the wheel comfortably.

Incredible value for money from the Golden Age of BMW. The following 7 Series design is an abortion. BMW and Mercedes also became focused on financialization as opposed to world-class engineering and longevity. If you're about sustainability, buy a beautifully built car like this, repair and maintain it. You are doing the environment a huge favor. It takes energy and resources to build new cars. And the economic throughput of electric vehicles is yet to be truly known and understood.

The last 6 cylinder 7 series we got was the 1992 735i which was also the last available with a manual. BMW America figured that the new M60 in 1993 was a replacement and we never got the diesel cars here. I think BMW did release diesel models here in 2014 or so but I stopped paying attention to BMWs after 2003.

My E38 is a fun car that keeps me busy going through it. What I find is there is a democratic of males under 25yo who have their self esteem tied in directly to the fact they’re in a 7 series BMW. Check the boxes on education, career , success- they’re in a 7 series and all life’s goals have been achieved. So if you criticize The E38, or even more so their car in particular, they have a total snowflake meltdown and are immediately triggered. It’s an odd relationship, but if you’ve ever been in any of the FB E38 groups you’ve absolutely come across them. You might even be one of them. If you drive an E38, still live at home and have a shit job - I’m talking about you.
