I got the chance to try an Epic V8 and I loved it. It's similar to the Think but much more playful.

I had a v7 and then jumped up to a V10 sport. And was depressingly useless at it. Ended up with a V8pro. Absolutely loved it. Reckon youd like it even more. Great video..got me very nostalgic 😁

Nice boat. I have a polyethylene V7. Try in a situation like at 4:20 to make a 30 degree roll towards the wave and lean on the wave. And you won't fall. I tried this.

I have a V6 and it is 2cm wider than the V8, it is extremely stable and catches anything. The only issue is that it has a Trackmaster rudder which means it is slow to turn and it doesn't steer to well while on the wave. I am looking at getting a skeg ski, and the V8 interests me, it's between that or an SLSA spec ski.

@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda Probably too late for you, but stability between spec skis can vary a lot. Have tried an Epic spec ski that is as stable as a V9 or so. But also a shallow seat spec ski (do not remember the model) that almost immediately threw me off ;-)

My doctor suggested that by fall, I can get back in the ocean. A couple of years ago I was serious about that very boat. I thought that it might be a fun, limited boat for me. However at this point in my life, I think that I waited too long to use this type of boat. It makes me sad not to be able to enjoy this part of the sport.

I'm a thrashed oldster, so I can relate to your concerns. The stable skis like the V5, V6, V7, V8 & V8 Pro allow folks like us to enjoy a spirited paddle on flat water along with small coastal days as depicted here. Get out on the water. Lakes, bays, slow rivers and small surf... Good clean fun. Don't sell yourself short. Never quit!

@@tommycheshire5508 Adjustments are made as we age. Lightweight boats (V5, V6, V8) in the lightest layup that your budget will allow; paired with an all carbon small-mid-wing paddle are a good start. A lightweight, waist high trailer for said boat. A beach dolly (fat tires) and the necessary "can do" attitude gets you going unassisted! A companion makes it even easier... There's a video of a woman in her 80's who does her fitness paddling on a lightweight V5 or V6. I'll try to locate it and post the title or link here. I found it to be inspirational. I've survived numerous injuries, cancer & chemotherapy. Paddling changed my life. At 78 with realistic expectations, you're good to go Sir. All the Best to You!

I recently bought an old Futura II surfski 19’ x 20” and find it fairly stable even with confused boat wakes on my local big river. I want something faster but am a little wide hip boned so nervous. Wondering if the v8 is faster or if I would fit in a v9.
@TriFitwithTimandAmanda
@TriFitwithTimandAmanda 11 ай бұрын
The V8 bucket is fairly generous but I’m sorry I’m unaware of the boat you’re currently paddling. I believe there’s quite a step up to the V9 in stability.
@yakinsea
@yakinsea 11 ай бұрын
I have a Furtura II and a V8 intermediate build. The futura is faster on the flats, but with a kick-up rudder and little to no rocker it can't touch the V8 in a down-winder or surfing. The V8 surfs very well. I haven't paddled the V9, but would think it would be faster and better on down-winders but with a drop in stability.

@@yakinsea I appreciate the insight. I did find a V10 Sport that I fit and am liking it so far. Tippier than the Futura for sure but not bad

Tried one a couple years ago very tippy. Been paddling for almost 20 years nothing could prepare me for how unstable that boat was. It may have even been the plastic version but regardless I just kept flipping it and couldn't get very far. You get in it, it flips. You breathe, it flips. Just moving the paddle in the air to actually get moving it flips. It's a HUGE difference from kayaks you have zero reserve stability. After all my years paddling the first time I flipped one one of my boats was last year hitting a submerged log in fast moving water but I am a very cautious paddler that was not a smart decision to explore those (admittedly mild but still) rapids. I think if you don't like wind and waves with how tippy even minimal conditions affect stable boats that tend not to flip skiing is not for you. If you consider that day you were out "not windy and not much chop" it makes me nervous to think what people do with their skis. I will freely admit you're a better and far more skilled human and paddler than I have the courage to aspire to be.

The thing I have going for me is I'm a strong swimmer, so if I flip it when I'm out I can always swim to shore.
@mikecoglione1308
@mikecoglione1308 Жыл бұрын
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda Me too but I'd rather not! I do mostly flatwater anyhow and stay close to shore. I will say the only time I flipped (other than my ski experience) was last year paddling a swamp at night. I should have known better than to go in there in the dark as I know that body of water well otherwise. Anyhow I hit an underwater tree and was only maybe 20-30 feet from shore. It was November so the water was VERY cold but had a dry suit *AND* PFD on. I got stuck in the underwater branches. Well thanks to the PFD I was able to exctricate my legs using my arms as I didn't need to tread water. And thanks to the dry suit I didn't panic or lose my head as it wasn't pleasant (semi dry suit you get a little wet but still stay warm) but definitely not cold either. Anyhow if I didn't have both on I am not saying I would have drowned but the chances of bailing out of that while stuck in an underwater tree would have been less than the ease it was to just get back to shore not 30 feet away! Imagine drowning 30 feet from shore.... *ALWAYS* wear your PFD as well as immersion gear when appropriate

I tried the V8 in windy and wave conditions, never having mounted a surf ski. I felt rock solid. So I transitioned to the V8 Pro, which was more sporty and more my style. The V8 Pro is less stable but faster and sportier. Everyone has different balance issues and for me, a surf ski beginner, I’m starting at the V8 Pro level. The V8 seemed very, very predictable and stable to me in relatively challenging conditions.

Love paddling but I don't think the sport as a whole is for me. I think I am maxing out with my Stellar S14 G2 kayak. Anything else faster or skinnier feels so tippy I just don't enjoy it. At 6'4" there is no secondary stabiltiy once it starts moving you're gone but the G2 seems to have some. I also don't know or want to re-enter either I think that is key for surfski both sit in kayaks and skis are very hard to re-enter for different reasons I don't have the coordination, balance or flexibility to deal with either. I just focus on staying close to shore and not flipping to start and you need a fairly stable boat to pull this off. @@tommyrq180
