Guys, I would never usually praise an EV because, well, I find them to be pretty painful to live with due to my high levels of range anxiety. I do not have the set up at home for an EV. BUT I can appreciate that someone who would buy one would. But even despite my anxiety issues, I am completely in love with this car. I think it might be one of my best drives in 2024.

Rad car, but if you wanted to take a roadtrip up the west coast or do the garden route, can you actually risk the fact that our country is nowhere near built for this ecosystem. Like a few peeps have mentioned, you’d likely need a proper solar home setup at a minimum just to use the car for local shuttling around to work, school, varsity, shops, and have a second Internal Combustion Car of sorts as a back up for longer trips. So at this stage, although the car is sweet, its more of an ‘extra add-on/luxury addition’ to your current car situation (if you’re lucky enough to have one). That in mind, comfortably over R1mill for your ICE car and your ORA. And even if you don’t have an ICE car, you’re still paying R300k for a solar setup. Numbers don’t work. At this stage cars of all shapes and sizes are pricing SA out of the market. And globally too I guess. Anyways. Rad video as always, by the raddest lady. Onward and upward

The ORA 3 is $12K usd in China, but freight is expensive for EV as it’s dangerous cargo.

I’m too tall, I legit can’t fit in them! I got to try it out and was so sad! That’s another cute car I can’t fit into 😖 You know what I can fit surprisingly well into though? The Fiat 500! It has amazing headroom and the seat goes down REALLY far!

Sorry bro, we don't have a rich woke govt willing to subsidise BEVs. Very soon we may not have dependable electricity (uncontrolled sporadic power cuts), but hey, lets go with EVs. Maybe solar will give us a temporary reprieve. Wind power is a farce and a joke. The tooth fairy may yet sort it all out and we can ride around in our utopian chariots.

hi there Juliet, awesome video as per usual. . :) Just a thought....if your company vehicle was changed from ICE to EV of for tax relief for your company, and you were issued with an EV company vehicle, who would pay for the recharge at home???? ICE vehicle no problem as they issue you with a fuel card but at home if ESKOM is not loadshedding, who pays for the electricity?? would be interesting to hear how that situation would pan out,

That is super interesting. Most EV's come with an charger installation, but as you say, would the company pay for the units used to charge it. Unless they give you charging card, which would mean you have to charge it at a public charging station. Hmmmm tricky!

GWM Ora is available in Europe, but right now, only in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Sweden and Bulgaria. Ora came to Bulgaria very recently; they already have the Haval cars and GWM P-Series, aka the Poer.

@@jasoncarmichael4540I went and had a sit in one here in Sydney Australia and in my opinion the proportions are all wrong in real life. I thought it was going to be like a Mini but IRL it's like 10-15% taller and longer.

Depends on the charger, but at home, a usual home plug would probs take about 10hrs

I feel like the rear is not complete, the lights are below the boot lid. There’s nothing on the boot lid level and i feel people who are driving vehicles with higher ground clearance, wouldn’t know what the Ora infront of them is doing because there’s no lights to tell them what the desired direction 🤷‍♂️

Most of the lights are directly below the rear window, in the same blacked out area as the glass.

Wait until LEAPMOTOR T03 is in SA. Even better looking than Ora, and likely to cost far less. BYD Dolphin arrived in SA for R539K. The Chinese EV war haven't even started yet...

This is just way outpriced for SA and simply offering an electric vehicle in SA is madness unless you are well heeled enough to install a decent home charger. Eishkom cannot even keep a battery operated torch on, how are they expected to sort out the mess of a grid to charge EV's.

Unless you have your own solar charging station at home...think twice. Eskom can't even run your lights half the time.

Home solar panels don’t generate that much power, probably around 300w per panel on a good day, so imagine having to charge a 63 kWh battery .. lots of panels. .. load shedding is a pain ofcoz, but another pain is the cost of acquiring an EV, R800K would get you a a proper ICE vehicle, instead of the ORA ..

Yes and No… People who can afford a new electric car can probably afford solar. Most homes with solar have 8-12 panels at around 500w per panel. Could easily charge the car from like 60% to 80% at 4000w in 4 hours. This would give one around 80km driving range… However, if you going the electric car route, add a few more panels. Otherwise, charge from 0% to 100% with Eskom for R155… hard to beat that for a ‘full tank’.

@@vuyaniman9440I’m able to charge my MG4 Long Range (64kWh) on only solar from March to September in Scotland, so I imagine you guys in South Africa wouldn’t have much trouble.

REALITY CHECK: This "made-in-China" Ora Hello Kitty-thing, is R161 000 more expensive (entry level Ora) compared to a much more sensible car such as a Corolla 1.8 XS Hybrid hatchback, which is made to impeccable quality standards in Japan. The R160 000 you save on the Corolla's purchase price alone, can pay for 170 000km of "free petrol" on the Corolla. (At R24/L, and 4L/100km or 25km/L) Then the Ora Cool Cat EV-mobile's charging costs haven't even been factored in yet. (If not charged at home, its R30 to R80 per 100km of charging, depending on the charger rates) Perfomance wise the Corolla's acceleration is a bit slower, but have a much higher top speed. Then, when you sell the better looking, totally reliable and respected Corolla, you'll get a very good trade-in / sales price, while the Ora would depreciate badly! Then you might get mocked for driving a silly car with comical knock-off Porsche styling. I have yet to meet a sane person who thinks the Ora looks good... (And the name is far from cool) If you want to "burn money", while experiencing unpleasant range anxiety and having to deal with power outages as well as many other EV-related compromises, this slightly rediculous and compromised EV is just the car for you! (Ps. I have driven the Ora cat-car and Corolla Hybrid myself, btw.)

I hear your argument, and I am certainly nowhere near on board owning just an EV...in fact, I don't think EVs are the only future (as many will say), BUT, one has to review these within their segments for now. There are loads of cars that would make way better financial sense than this Ora, sure. But, let's take positives where we can, at least we don't now only have EVs way over the million mark.

I would rather buy this cat car than that boring Toyota, plenty of better choices in that price category than that Corolla cross that looks like a design from the early 2000s. Would rather add more and get a better Toyota like a RAV4 hybrid or Gr Corolla

EV's are a scam, they cost way too much, we dont have the infrastructure to maintain EV's, wait till those batteries fail, might as well buy another car. The cost to the environment is very high.

Statistics from countries that have had EVs for a decade now indicate that your worries about battery failure are completely misplaced. EVs are actually a lot more reliable than ICE cars as there's way much fewer moving parts. Environmental damage caused by the production and driving of ICE cars by far outweighs the environmental damage from mining for biproducts to create EVs.

Climate change is being used as a tool to push people into a certain direction, EV's is not our future, think there are better alternatives. Ok i admit i get a lot of my info online and there has been a lot of reports of Teslas not wanting to work in cold conditions and EV's catching fire. The current options will be pricey to repair and it will only be for the people that earns a good wage. It might be that EV's is the future, but its not the future for the average joe in the street, not in SA. I'd go hybrid, but i do like my good old trusty diesel engine. I can fix it myself at a fraction of the cost.
