I have a Santana Anibal. Looks very similar. Can drive it around on mountain trails and through fields with no worries. Quite brilliant off-road. But it is terrible on the road.

Why would you want to look at the roof to make an emergency quick change to the drive settings? How about differentially shaped controls on the transmission tunnel?

I've had 6 bmw straight six diesels, all twin turbo varient inclusing wife's current X5 40d and its a phenomenal power plant and gearbox set up. Zero issues related to them. Definitely makes a solid heart for a rugged beast.

If they offered this as a "hose out" I'd want one and it would earn a place in the conversation with Land Cruiser and Patrol.

Well I am Australian I have ordered my grenadier and we told Macron to take his 90 billion worth of subs and stick it where the sun don't shine. What a spoiled little brat they kept raising the price for an inferior product. Now were in bed with the poms and the yanks as it should be.

The sad fact is that no car manufacturer in their right minds will invest in a new car manufacturing plant in post-Brexit Britain. Being outside the European Union makes Just In Time manufacturing impossible. This was predictable and indeed pointed out many times by opponents of Brexit.

Having replaced my cumbersome 1998 110 with the new Defender a year ago, I can with a good degree of qualification say that you can keep your analogue function-dictated design. I've never had so much versatile off-road fun in a 4x4, nor towed 3.4 tonnes across europe with such consummate ease.

@@inter-linked everything is made of bits. Usually the cheapest and easiest to make regardless of how reliable they will be. They are made to a cost to be just good enough to last the warranty. Choosing the best bits made by experts go last and you think that’s a problem? I’ve worked in car factories. I’ve worked for trw and denso all sort of parts end up in all sorts of manufacturers cars.

They had the right idea by buying an existing, working factory (and the workforce with it). Getting production going is where most upstart car manufacturers fail.

The New Defender is a really good car, it isn't identicle to the last one, but nobody bought the old one (which is why it was discontinued). This has to be a lot better than the old Defender because otherwise it will just pick up the terrible sales figures from the old Defender.

Who ripped who off? Series I from the Willys Jeep? 70 Series ripped the Defender? Land Cruiser ripped Range Rover? G-Wagen ripped Defender? Grenadier ripped them all!!!!

Toyota sells the 70 Series Land Cruiser in 3rd world countries. Sadly Land Rover created a new 'plastic' Defender, OK for the school run or the tranquil green lanes of England, but it's very debatable if it will ever be successful in the 'real' 4x4 market because of its design and huge dependency on electronics. The Grenadier seems to be something very different and looks like it will be properly 'ruggedised' to take the punishment of offroading /overlanding in some pretty remote and multi-terrain parts of the world. I certainly know what I will be spending my money on.

If you are referring to fossil fuels in general, sales of new petrol and diesel cars are being phased out in the UK in 9 years, but no one has suggested the sale of fuel will suddenly stop. My guess is petrol and diesel will simply get too expensive to buy, but we'll have synthetic versions of both before then as nyway.

@@user-ip1jk6yn6k A Toyota 70 Series is easy to get parts/servicing for and has an engine that will likely do 500,000+ km - I'm not sure a totally new vehicle from a totally new manfacturer (great though it looks) with a BMW engine.... (!) can compete with Toyota's incredible toughness, reliability and longevity.....

This will not do well in Australia or other countries similar as this uses a very complicated BMW engine. We all know how bad these engines have been and very unreliable with their plastic engine parts.

They are obviously not allowed to mention Defender for legal reasons, but they could have just avoided the point, rather than trotting out blatant lies such that they had "no pre-conceived idea of what the car would look like" (ie almost exactly like a Defender). If he is telling this lie, what other lies is he telling?

His careful word land mine steps is what's called "media communications" … "reinforce our brand, promote our advantages, offer our value proposition, don't have the prospective customer thinking about the competitors." The legal restriction would be to make a comparative claim as a substantial value of the vehicle in terms of its performance, then you get into hot water and the lawyers make money. While I too thought "really?" when he said he had no preconceived look for the car, if you look at a Bollinger or a G-wagon or a Jeep, you see a Defender by another mother. I think this is patently targeting - and paid for by a customer - those who thought "well, the new Defender is rubbish, now what?" … and you have to study it for a minute to realise it's not a Land Rover … and if Land Rover had come out with this as the new Defender, I'd be looking forward to having one beside my decades old Range Rover as "the new one."

In 20 years... If there's still a place to buy petrol/diesel from, for a reasonable price. Apart from that, I kind of understand Toyota's gamble with hydrogen engines. The enthusiasm surrounding electric vehicles might be premature. It's a shame that European manufacturers fall for electrification of the automotive industry like they fell for screens and overloading their products with touch-shit. I wish all the best to the Ineos team and hope they won't miss the opportunity for development.

In 2041 you will have trouble buying fossil fuels. The electric revolution is moving fast and this thing will look out of date before it hits the market. Tesla, Rivian, Ford, GM, Bollinger are all launching electric powered ATVs over the next year. Mr. Fracking Atkinson will have to think again about motive power.

@@jamespollock9001 Two things on that. Firstly the process for getting the raw materials out of crude to make fertilisers is separate from the refning process to make petrol and diesel. Second thing is legislation which will regulate harder and harder again the use of fossil fuels in ground transportation until it becomes uneconomic..As an EV driver I can say the TCO for electric vehicles is a revelation which more and more a realising. Two years ago Ev sales were 3.5% of new car sales in Europe, last year 11%, this year looking close to 20%...the writing is on the wall for internal combustion. With battery energy densities at 250 Wh/kg and rising, while prices fall even heavy goods vehicles will go electric (see Tesla, Volvo, Iveco etc for details). Mid decade will see 400 Wh/kg and

I think the economic cost of change over to EVs in the agricultural sector will prolong the use of fossil fuels well past 2041. But it will happen eventually and I am all for it. Just many challenges along the way.

It is a good engine choice, people say that the N55 is the new 2JZ and B58 is the new generation of the N55. They are pretty reliable if you take care of them and follow the manufacturer servicing. BMW diesels in general are as reliable as every other diesel on the market at the moment, nothing special I think.

If you get a nice 500k out of it before needing a rebuild that’s plenty and what most old 1hz or td42 are good for anyway. It’s just the “lucky ones” that hit 1 million and it’s hype. On another note ice engines will become uneconomical in 10-15 years to own so these arguments are invalid. In 10 years you will be buying electric ineos and toyotas

I have owned diesel BMW's for the last 15 years and I have been changing the oil and oil filter every 6000 miles and a full service once a year and ive had no problems. My family have always owned Mercedes and its the same story. German engineering is outstanding

The US and UK is expected to be 70% of their market. So I think it is save to say you will get them in the US. Interesting to see how it will compete with the new Bronco and the Wrangler.
